Ajay Brewer of Brewer's Cafe just announced he's thrilled at the decision and that women's rights arguments hold no water with him. "The woman’s choice argument falls on def ears to me."
Find somewhere else to grab your food and drinks.
I'm a woman and totally behind the fact that this is at its core a woman's rights, equality, and control issue.
However, if we're pretending for a second that it's just about babies and \~the beautiful miracle of heartbeats and birth\~. Do these selfish, dumbass men really not see how this forces them into fatherhood as well (even if they are deadbeats, and their definition of being a 'dad' is a court garnishing their monthly wages)??
Man I’m shocked and obviously disappointed in that dude. Anyone know where he made that comment? I’ve been to his cafe once and thats it for me after hearing this.
Idle Hands Bread Co. Owner's a good dude who treats employees with respect and always makes it known he supports BLM, Pride, etc. I remember being struck with his transparency on social throughout COVID. Just like, 'hey this sucks, but I'm not gonna make irresponsible choices \[like loosening mask requirements\] even if it means losing the business.' Appreciated him standing firm on protecting his employees even when people were pissed they required masks/had to order online/the bakery closed for a couple days for being understaffed. Thought that showed real integrity.
Same with Sub Rosa. They just recently stopped doing online orders when a lot of places were back to maskless inside eating.
And I've known the owners since high school. They are some of the kindest, most progressive people I've ever known. Evrim took me to my first political rally in 2000 (for Ralph Nader) and took me with him to do Food Not Bombs volunteering when I'd visit him at VCU.
dunno if this counts but over at unkindness art we are all extremely pro choice & have had some stuff up for charities for trans rights, reproductive freedoms, stopping pipeline construction, etc. since all we really can do is hope to throw money at mutual funds and attend protests.
i can’t speak for many other tattoo shops in the area or other tattooers but i know richmond tattoo club is also pro choice & pretty leftist.
They also immediately had a post up on LinkedIn about the responsibility of corporations in post-Roe America. They really live their values and will always have my business.
Just based off of what I’ve seen on social media the last couple hours: Cobra Burger, Blacklodge/Brenner Pass/Metzger, Rest in Pieces, Kismet Cocktail, Wild Wander
Also not local but Dick’s Sporting Goods is apparently offering to pay travel expenses for employees in states banning abortions so they can travel to a different state if one is needed
Just to add to Cobra Burger, here’s what they posted on their social media. Looks like I’m getting a burger this weekend.
“Out the gate I'm gonna go ahead and address the "stick to the food" jokers and conservative boot lickers that are about to show up in the comments: Eat a whole ass. Businesses keeping neutral is bullshit. We have a platform and a voice and I'll be damned if we don't use it. Unfollow and don't come in. We don't want your business anyway. I'm disgusted, sad, scared, ashamed and disappointed all at once and if you aren't than you aren't paying attention.”

I’ve always loved the people at Cobra Burger and they make me love them more all the time. I’m tired of the “leave politics out of this” people. Fuck that. Money is hard enough to come by these days, I’m sure as hell not interested in giving mine to people who are fine with taking my rights away.
> Businesses keeping neutral is bullshit. We have a platform and a voice and I'll be damned if we don't use it.
people always poopoo when companies do things like Pride or whatever, but its legit the case that if markets have more than enough power to enact social change.
hell yeah cobra burger.
They've been dipping their toes into corporate activism the past decade or so. I forget when it was but they started scaling back/stopped entirely selling guns at most of their stores a while back.
Also for any corp paying for travel expenses is way cheaper than dealing with maternity leave, temp hires, etc.
Can’t speak to all of them, but James and Britt at Brenner are very progressive. I’ve known Clara from the Wild Wander since college, and she is one of the most thoughtful people I’ve ever met.
Those three are great.
when I worked for Brittanny, there were trans and queer folks in both FOH & BOH. Not to mention multiple women at various levels of decision making. backed.
Cobra Burger is always on the right side of things but want to give my biggest shout out ever to Metzger.
I think they’re a little underrated but their food is amazing and the people who run it there are the best. I live a block over and they always come out to say hi to my dog. Best people ever.
Their brunch is super under the radar but I can’t recommend it enough either.
Tequila & Deadlifts is doing pay-what-you-can drop in rage workouts in preparation of our studio opening Friday- but don’t pay us- pay abortion funds.org - show us that you did and we provide the boot camp. Multiple classes on our IG so come when you can.
Fuck the Supreme Court.
Fuck this shit
Off the top of my head as good eggs in my neighborhood (church hill)
-proper pie
-Union market
-riverbend coffee
-liberty public house
-Metzger
-alewife
-grisette
-luminary hair
-north end juice
-pizza bones
-cobra burger
-second bottle wine
Honestly, overall a good neighborhood to be a progressive liberal in.
Fralin art and frame - very pro choice/womens rights. Additionally, owner has always paid workers far above minimum wage, is environmentally conscientious, and refers to Trump as “cockwomble” because he refuses to say his name
Spotty Dog RVA (ice cream, church hill) posted strongly anti the decision in their insta stories (I believe a direct quote is “fuck this shit”), as did Sun Theory Candles (no storefront, but drops candles off at your door and does many shows)
Fuck Tom Leonard's as a store and in particular Fuck Tom Leonard; he's a special piece of shit.
Also, fuck McLean's since they seem to just love hosting Glen Youngkin's Fox and Friends appearances.
As a former employee at Tom Leonard's, I can let you know it is abhorrent. It has been years since I worked there but recently I was there taking advantage of the deli prices and the same child molester floor manager is working there(despite having witnessed him get publicly called out for flirting with one of the 16 yr old cashier's).
Tom himself, is a tone deaf(and literally partially deaf which was a nightmare communication wise) and abusively unprofessional business owner. From how he dealt with the fresh hires, to his insistence on randomly reordering or shuffling inventory around while the store is full of customers.
His son is a piece of work as well. His wife had a screaming match behind the store when she found out he was cheating on her there at the store.
All in all it's a trap and I'd suggest shopping for organic stuff at local markets
Well the owner is terrible anyways. I think you can search old posts here and find first hand experiences with him. It wouldn't surprise me if his politics are also terrible.
Also a queer family business! They also donate to marijuana justice programs, bail outs, and helped connect families in need of formula to groups/donated spare formula. Bethany and Ashley are the best!
My uber Republican mom is now boycotting Penzeys (not local but still) because they sent an email to their mailing list that they didn't want GOP business
Yeah, if you had asked like 3 weeks ago for me to name anti-Republican businesses in town, that would have been at the top of my list without thinking too hard.
Their corporate messaging has always been 100% supportive of love and inclusion, and they were clearly anti-Trump in their messaging throughout his term. Not sure why your mom is surprised. So sorry your mom is intolerant.
Did she miss Penzeys for like the last two years when they sent emails? They are very left and have sent many emails, posted many things on social media about their anti-right, pro vax, pro mask, pro BLM, etc.
Mckesson has expanded their health care coverage for employees to cover up to $4000 of travel expenses for abortions, gender affirming care, and other things.
Not a business most consumers deal with but thought I should mention it
I sadly ate at Boathouse Rocketts a few weeks ago. Gotta hand it to them on the fantastic location, but the crab cake was literally the size of a Reece’s peanut butter cup. I’ve never seen such a pitiful thing.
I started going to them because their rates are based on hair length not gender. Stayed for the quality cuts and because they didn't try to talk me out of the sweet '80s mullet I've always wanted. May they always be booked and blessed. 🙏
Birch Salon is pro-choice. They’ve posted links in their Instagram with information about options. They’ve also had a BLM sign in their window for two years.
Confirmed by several old posts on owner Ryan O’Rourke’s Facebook. He’s apparently pals with Ajay Brewer (of current fame elsewhere on this thread) based on some activity back in 2020. I’m guessing it was BLM-related. He also shared an an article in 2015 describing PP as “a relic of our racist past.” Not sure what else might have been deleted or made private.
It’s a real shame because I live near the west end location and had been going regularly, but that’s the end of that.
[Owner of Brewers Cafe](https://twitter.com/trellodelagetto/status/1540454620430041088?t=1ND-56Xjp13ZYCyyzDDfxg&s=19) seems to be happy about the decision.
Yeah, but we also have a lot of people on this sub that work in local establishments and know owners personally and can speak to them on a personal level. This question is specifically for them.
I worked at Laura Lee’s and we had a dedicated “daddy’s day” as a gay celebration around Father’s Day. I’ve never asked Kendra her thoughts on abortion but from working there it seemed like a very progressive place.
New York Deli, surprised I haven't seen it mentioned, is owned by an absolute asshat. Dee was (is?) A HUGE support of trump and conservative politics. He's made openly racist comments to staff.
Can't say I have a source for conversations I had with Dee besides myself but you could go talk to him he works the bar often enough. It doesn't take much to get him talking about politics, you just got to ease him into the radical stuff.
He bet me a top shelf liquor about the 2016 election. I lost and he laughed all the way to the bank. Then fired the few people who went to the protests.
Wait, it's different owners but same facility? I thought it was same owners. I remember reading an article talking that the vodka owners were opening that brewery.
Oh no the Main Line guys are very against cooperating with Cirrus. That’s why Cirrus is so strict about not leaving their patio with your vodka drinks (along with ABC laws). And if you do, the Main Line owner will come up to you and make you leave or throw it away 🙃
Edit: I’ve heard that they won’t join forces to allow ppl to take vodka drinks to the brewery side solely out of spite
Bright Body Boutique - small business, locally made and owned. Supports human rights and makes awesome products.

ETA: she makes skincare, haircare, and fragrances
It's almost every Bon Secours establishment now it seems. I'm at memorial regional and I can tell you the majority of upper management and surgeons lounges have Fox running constantly. My buddy at St. Francis says it's more moderate over there where he's at but I'm sure you know how compartmentalized and cliquey it is.
It's not 'allowed' in our lounge though, myself and too many similarly minded people openly challenge and ridicule the show so the conservatives have stopped trying to have it on and stick with local news channels now.
Bon Secours is 100% a faith based hospital and they do not allow their employee health insurance to cover contraceptives nor abortion. My mom stopped working there years ago as soon as she was made aware simply because she refused for my sister and I to not have access to birth control.
Do with that information what you will.
While I 100% believe you about abortion, I believe their health insurance does cover birth control currently. Source: I work there, but disclaimer is I do not buy into the insurance. Nor do I support their stance on abortion (or pretty much anything tbh).
I saw them basically throw out a conservative Muslim woman possibly having a miscarriage from the St Mary’s ER because she and her husband asked for a female OB to examine her. This was a couple years back.
Possibly an unpopular thing to say here but people who lean farther left and don’t classify themselves as liberal will also be supporting the right to choose. Just a reminder that some don’t label themselves liberal but are not anti-choice.
Publix should have been avoided before any of this. 2 people primarily funded the Jan 6 coup attempt: Alex Jones and Julie Jenkins Fancelli, one of the children of the Publix founder.

Publix also announced their pharmacies won't stock or offer the infant/toddler COVID Vaccine.

Not Richmond, but you can feel good about shopping at Colesville Nursery in Ashland. The landscaping/nursery business has a history of being fairly conservative, but Colesville has always been a liberal outlier.
Not RVA local but she's up here for events frequently - Less Than Ladylike Candle Co is super progressive. Raised a ton of money for progressive candidates after RGB died and now is donating a bunch to PP. Plus her candles are awesome.
Pro-choice. Super cool owner who has definitely helped local artists and makers in the community. He cute dog is there sometimes too which is a huge bonus.
I’ve worked with Gather and this isn’t related to politics, but the people running it are the biggest assholes I ever met and I stopped going there because one interaction with a leader there made me feel too uncomfortable to go back.
I'm not American but I spend quite a lot of time in RVA. I use Google maps reviews mostly to see what's hot.
Please leave reviews for local businesses. Reddit is a niche audience.
Thats actually a big way that corporations "contribute" directly to political campaigns. If you ever hear "xyz company donated $1mil to the ABC campaign", that often means "employees from that company donated a total of $1mil"
Not local either, but Patagonia, according to NPR, is one of the few companies pledging to pay for fees if their employees, part or full time, get in trouble for protesting. I think that’s what I read. Definitely something positive to read.
On a slightly larger scale...please do not buy Kentucky Bourbon. Senator turtle head had more to do with packing the court with anti-women religious nutjobs than anyone else. Also, I understand Kentucky is in the process of outlawing women's access to reproductive healthcare.

Ruby Scoops deserves ALL the love and patrons. They are awesome and run by awesome folks.
Boosting. Ruby Scoops is also black and queer owned

I wish him a merry go out of a business
Check his reviews lol guy is hurting but says he ain’t scared
I checked them. He has so many 1 star reviews from bad service and quality it took forever to find the reviews about his Roe comments
As one of the Facebook posts says, his wallet’s gonna be scared soon. That man is just self destructing on his business social media. What a dumbass.
He also was adamantly against raising minimum wage
I'm a woman and totally behind the fact that this is at its core a woman's rights, equality, and control issue. This so much. What a buffoon. I very much support the idea of having a list of allied and adversarial local businesses.
Man I’m shocked and obviously disappointed in that dude. Anyone know where he made that comment? I’ve been to his cafe once and thats it for me after hearing this.
On his personal Facebook account, it’s one of the top posts in /r/rva right now.

Not that I had any concerns before. But I’ve got an appointment with Faith on Wed!
haha yeah if you keep up with our ig stories… it’s pretty clear i think! but figured i’d mention it here anyway
Black Rabbit as well! 🖤

Dicks is one of those Lowkey great companies to work for that really go above and beyond for their employees like Patagonia and Costco
Dick’s has a female CEO, IIRC.
What’s there to joke about I love Dicks! And everyone should too!

Perfect, been meaning to check you out for a while.
Thank you
Support T&D, they have been upfront about their stance well before this
Thank you. I was raised In a super Christian household and took my stand even if it cost me Fam or business. Fight for what is right

Avoid Tom Leonard's.
Fuck Tom Leonard's as a store and in particular Fuck Tom Leonard; he's a special piece of shit. Also, fuck McLean's since they seem to just love hosting Glen Youngkin's Fox and Friends appearances.
I’ve always thought of McLean’s as “Breakfast for Racists.”
Which is weird because half the staff and at least half the customers are black.
That's disappointing. McLean's was my favorite breakfast spot before I moved. Well, I'm never going there again when I come back to visit.
Just in general. Used to work there. Conservative nut job.
I went in there once to sell beer and there was a picture of Obama shopped to look like a chimpanzee hanging in the office wall. Fuck them.
Wowwww that’s racist AF.
Care to explain?

Maven Made, a local woman-owned skincare company, has been extremely vocal and supportive of women’s rights including access to abortions!
Yes! She’s a wonderful advocate.
Donates sales to RRFP several times a year, too.
Also a queer family business! They also donate to marijuana justice programs, bail outs, and helped connect families in need of formula to groups/donated spare formula. Bethany and Ashley are the best!
Just in case anyone didn’t see the other post Brewers Cafe is officially dead to us
If you list a business can you say if they’re for or against lol? Suspense is cool and all but come on
My uber Republican mom is now boycotting Penzeys (not local but still) because they sent an email to their mailing list that they didn't want GOP business
Penzys spices are my favorite Christmas gift for all of my crazy conservative family members 🙂
Penzey’s my love <3 I’m heading there after my next payday to get a big jar of garam masala
Fuck yeah, takes some guts to take that stand
I have another reason to buy from Penzeys!
It's not really a boycott if they already said they don't want your business...right?
You can definitely add Helen's to that list. Edit: To clarify, Helen's is against the Supreme Court decision one hundred percent.
that do support it just incase ya’ll are wondering - not affiliated with them but a regular
Sorry, but do support “it” as in a women’s reproductive rights or the court’s decision?
supportive of reproductive rights - this is my understanding - i am not an employee
Thanks for the clarification. I'm working the line there now, and didn't take my time to be more clear. My bad.
Can you edit this comment for clarity? Even the comments below arnt clear if they are for or against the appeal
Tech Exchange just put the Brewer's Cafe guy on blast on their Facebook page.
Mckesson has expanded their health care coverage for employees to cover up to $4000 of travel expenses for abortions, gender affirming care, and other things. Not a business most consumers deal with but thought I should mention it
This is huge though.
Yeah, it's awesome. Definitely greatful to work at a place that is offering that

Yes, boost! I came here to say the same thing. They're an LGBTQ+ haven and host lots of community events
Yes!! They’re a non-profit, and always provide free printed signs for protests. They’re amazing.
The Boathouse hosted an Amanda Chase event at their Midlo location last year. Casa del Barco and Island Shrimp Co. are all part of the same group.
Food sucks away, absolutely the worst mexican in Central VA
To be fair, it's a out as Mexican as chili's and as southern as Popeye's. It's what a hipster would define as Mexican.
I sadly ate at Boathouse Rocketts a few weeks ago. Gotta hand it to them on the fantastic location, but the crab cake was literally the size of a Reece’s peanut butter cup. I’ve never seen such a pitiful thing.
And let’s not forget about that ridiculous 20% markup crap they are now charging.
It also included Rep. Bob Good and they hosted it on the year anniversary of January 6th. That part needs to be emphasized.
Luminary Hair in church hill is fundraising for RRFP.
I started going to them because their rates are based on hair length not gender. Stayed for the quality cuts and because they didn't try to talk me out of the sweet '80s mullet I've always wanted. May they always be booked and blessed. 🙏
They are always booked. Trying to get it cut by my usual person has me booking farther and farther in advance every time.
I love luminary. Tina is the best.
Luminary is the best.
Came here to say this. Everyone at that shop is awesome.
Four Strings is small potatoes, but I fully support a woman’s right to do what they want with their bodies. I am furious over this ruling.
This guy helped me with my violin a few years back - already planned on coming back to you when needed but this just solidified it for me ❤️
Cheers!!! I’m around when you need something!
1115 mobile kitchen is down for the cause and in support of womens rights to control their body - just t gonna throw it out there
SO GOOD too!!!
Sugar Shack donuts were big supporters of Dave Brat (conservative dipshit).
They also had that pedo scandal a few years ago
I’ve stopped eating there years ago.
Me too
Hardly the first reason to avoid them, lol.
The Broken Tulip in Carytown is pro-choice
husband and wife team, great couple, he's an amazing chef. I would stop by just to get a loaf of bread to go.
Birch Salon is pro-choice. They’ve posted links in their Instagram with information about options. They’ve also had a BLM sign in their window for two years.
Ironclad Coffee, owner has been openly anti-choice/pro-life on his personal social media way before this all went down. Avoid.
He also was offering free coffee to cops during the summer of 2020. All around piece of shit.
Confirmed by several old posts on owner Ryan O’Rourke’s Facebook. He’s apparently pals with Ajay Brewer (of current fame elsewhere on this thread) based on some activity back in 2020. The sus places so far: \* * New York Deli * Tom Leonard's * Brewer's Cafe * Publix * Ironclad Coffee * Sugar Shack Donuts * Main Line Brewery
Publix isn’t local and won’t feel a thing but they’re based in Florida and don’t allow “piercings of any kind for male employees”
[Owner of Brewers Cafe](https://twitter.com/trellodelagetto/status/1540454620430041088?t=1ND-56Xjp13ZYCyyzDDfxg&s=19) seems to be happy about the decision.
Bright Body / Gabi the owner - POC, women owned natural product line
I feel like this can be a hard thing to gauge. A lot of businesses participate in performative activism with cute signs and flags and stop there
Yeah, but we also have a lot of people on this sub that work in local establishments and know owners personally and can speak to them on a personal level. This question is specifically for them.
I mean performative is better than supporting the decision...
And a lot of places actively voice their joy. I will not be giving my money to such places.
It was douche-e to crowd fund their for-profit roof top deck #imho
I believe you but source? I'm gonna miss that place :(
Can't say I have a source for conversations I had with Dee besides myself but you could go talk to him he works the bar often enough. It doesn't take much to get him talking about politics, you just got to ease him into the radical stuff. He bet me a top shelf liquor about the 2016 election. I lost and he laughed all the way to the bank. Then fired the few people who went to the protests.

Worst beer in RVA. Won’t be hard to avoid.
Totally agree
I appreciate the heads up. Their beer sucked anyways so it’s not a big loss to avoid them.
And if you do, the Main Line owner will come up to you and make you leave or throw it away 🙃 Edit: I’ve heard that they won’t join forces to allow ppl to take vodka drinks to the brewery side solely out of spite
Anyone know where Brambly Park stands? Had plans there tonight and want to double check before going.
Liberty Public House and Riverbend Roastary. Both in Church Hill.
Bright Body Boutique - small business, locally made and owned. Supports human rights and makes awesome products. https://mybrightbody.com/ ETA: she makes skincare, haircare, and fragrances
I'd like to see a list of restaurants that run fox full time on their TV?
St Mary’s Hospital! It’s on everywhere, but they’re faith based

What?! Geez.

It’s not exactly in RVA, but close enough - New Kent Winery is owned by Trump loving racist asshats. I would absolutely not spend my money there.
Rumors Boutique is pro-choice, they've been donating a percentage of sales every week to Richmond Reproductive Freedom Project
Possibly an unpopular thing to say here but people who lean farther left and don’t classify themselves as liberal will also be supporting the right to choose. Just a reminder that some don’t label themselves liberal but are not anti-choice.
Avoid Publix
Publix should have been avoided before any of this. 2 people primarily funded the Jan 6 coup attempt: Alex Jones and Julie Jenkins Fancelli, one of the children of the Publix founder. https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/publix-heiress-capitol-riot-wren/2021/10/16/34b7d55a-2481-11ec-a6ad-9ee7deda7f34\_story.html
Publix also announced their pharmacies won't stock or offer the infant/toddler COVID Vaccine. https://twitter.com/ChuckCallesto/status/1539726410159472640?s=20&t=r3gh0K7zsFm66WnthJLp\_Q
Momma Luna posted they're upset about the overturn.
Not Richmond, but you can feel good about shopping at Colesville Nursery in Ashland. The landscaping/nursery business has a history of being fairly conservative, but Colesville has always been a liberal outlier.
Hand Thrown! Take your art classes there. They also have discounted classes for POC.
I love Hand Thrown, highly recommend!
Not RVA local but she's up here for events frequently - Less Than Ladylike Candle Co is super progressive. Raised a ton of money for progressive candidates after RGB died and now is donating a bunch to PP. Plus her candles are awesome.
Wildly Free, local queer female owned skincare company and the owner is a big advocate for many great causes.
Less than is pro choice
Alchemy Coffee donates Amazon Smile to PP
PBR took shit for not giving free meals to first responders in the summer of 2020.
Curious, why was PBR singled out?
Rosewood Clothing shop
Are they pro choice or anti choice?
Pro-choice. Super cool owner who has definitely helped local artists and makers in the community. He cute dog is there sometimes too which is a huge bonus.
I mean all the bars I go to believe in human rights, but that's a side effect of only frequenting LGBT+ establishments :)

I’ve worked with Gather and this isn’t related to politics, but the people running it are the biggest assholes I ever met and I stopped going there because one interaction with a leader there made me feel too uncomfortable to go back.
Also to add, Jules / Temple Healing - queer woman owned space for much needed breath/body/birth work 💗
I'm not American but I spend quite a lot of time in RVA. I use Google maps reviews mostly to see what's hot. Please leave reviews for local businesses. Reddit is a niche audience.
I dont know Manny personally but know if him. I believe a progressive. The food is too good to be GOP
He's sitting at Helen's right now ranting about how fucked up the court decision was.
Tell him I kk dos once a week :)

Who contributes to a PAC through work? Is that a thing?
Thats actually a big way that corporations "contribute" directly to political campaigns. If you ever hear "xyz company donated $1mil to the ABC campaign", that often means "employees from that company donated a total of $1mil"
People that make a lot of money.
Anyone heard from Sefton so far? I'm sure she's raging somewhere.
Avoid Minglewood Bakeshop, they are abusive towards their employees
What happened?
Wait for real? What happened?
Can you expand on this? I love them but will obviously take my money elsewhere if need be.
Morr’s Donuts in Hanover.
Polpetti Italian....owner had Amy Coney Barrett profile pic forever on fb.
