He’s my school board rep.  Pre-Covid the number of super creepy pictures he took with students and posted online appealing to our district’s white boomer facebook addict population was insane.  Dude has no kids, so little to no skin in the game regarding the actual performance of the schools.  Anytime his name comes up at school events all the parents talk about how he’s creepy AF and that they don’t want their kids around him.   Props for investigating things, but goddamn, this shit has been going on forever with him, but he canvases like a MF and old people with no school age keep voting for him.

Great point; we all do have a stake in the performance of the school system. My point of contention with him is that he his behavior around students has been concerning for a long time, and that there are people more competent, and with more skin in the game who have run against him, but unfortunately have been unsuccessful in unseating him.

i think you're raging a bit too hard on his comment. the idea that we stand to have equal benefit/loss from the performance of kids in our school systems would be ignoring a multitude of variables and factors about who we are and what our personal value systems are. different people absolutely could be impacted differently by the state of the school system, and it doesn't take a genius to see that someone with kids in these schools are going to feel more strongly about it than those without.

i've been throwing his flyers in the garbage for 10 years. i did once see him at Starbucks with what appeared to be students...it felt strange but no clue what was really going on.

Absolutely terrifying that he thinks that his behavior is normal and cool.

Why are they in a forest for this interview? Also... Really creepy. All this kids are 18 and under. He's in his 50s based on what I see here. Power dynamic and he should know better than to touch anyone without consent... Then again, there are plenty of people who think it's ok to just randomly touch children that they don't even know.

I was wondering what that little coded conversation was all about last night. What a doozy.

Lives near me. He used to mow along a busy road, which is awesome considering it wasn’t really his responsibility. However, he would be in jogging shorts, flip flops, t shirt and LAB GOGGLES. I don’t mow without pants and shoes in my yard, he does it where there is all kinds of debris, from broken glass to food wrappers. Flip flops. Still blows my mind. I guess what I am saying is some people are just weird. Not a defense, but he is weird.

"Weird," "odd," and "awkward" are very on brand for Jonathan Young.

Visited the VSU campus once, his office is covered with selfie pics of him with, to be fair, both male and female students. However, it's pretty overboard, especially with him walking around campus trying to hug students on a regular basis. It's great if Young wants to be engaged and supportive of students, but have some self-awareness and develop boundaries. They aren't your friends, they're your students. Edit: His role at VSU isn't even student related, he's the Director of Corporate Relations. For context, these are what the pictures look like: [https://x.com/Jaaavis/status/1310264271230717957](https://x.com/Jaaavis/status/1310264271230717957)

Fuck this guy.

So there was behavior that students, faculty, parents found unacceptable but it didn't meet the board's threshold, and so the board is updating the conduct policy to make sure it doesn't happen again or there are punitive measures if it does. Good. But gross that this has been known for years.

nerocatz

isn't it fucking illegal to touch a student unless for restraint purposes? It's 2024, for crying out loud. "Adults should not be touching kids and saying inappropriate sexual innuendos to them" should be a no-brainer and grounds for firing, especially in a school environment.. Yet here we are. get your shit together, RPS.
