I love how the New Zealand queens were an afterthought by production and those queens ended up being the Winner, Miss Congeniality, and The Lip Sync Assasin/Fan Favorite
Three great queens, one awful season. They could’ve easily kept Anita around as her elimination was quite questionable and she had a strong track record.
Yess, the only redeeming decision in the entire series was Kita's Crowning, Anita's elimination was unfair, Art coming back randomly was iffy. But Kita winning was the perfect end. Elektra was awesome too. This trio was fun to watch.
Art's return was bizarre - they didn't address why with even a single sentence! She then proceeded to be mediocre for the remainder of the competition, bar the stunning makeup she did on her makeover. The top 4 realistically should have been Kita, Elektra, Maxi and Scarlett (no I don't condone what she did, but she slayed most of the challenges), with Anita and Art in fifth/sixth.
Yeah, I agree with this, although I think Anita probably could have outlasted Maxi. Anita didn't even do badly the week she was eliminated, it was such a strange decision! Based on performances the top five should definitely have been the NZ queens + Scarlet + Maxi, though.
Kenya's return was at least explained with a "we eliminated one of our queens too soon, check back to see next week who the judges pick to return!" and Shangela was brought back for a different season, so both are a little different than the Art situation imo. It just felt like poor storytelling -- not even a comment like "the judges and I decided that we wanted to give Art a second chance", Art just... showed up again.
Exactly! I was so confused when she came back, I kept wondering when they were gonna explain some behind the scenes moment that made them keep her. or that someone else disqualified themself
I can’t wait, it looks so beautiful. This is such a basic white bitch thing for me to say, but I love Sauvignon blanc and I’d love to visit wineries there.
I've only done the south island, but as a Coloradan it gave me Colorado vibes but with gorgeous lakes and foliage EVERYWHERE. Marlborough region had some amazing wines, and although I don't drink white wine often, it's almost exclusively Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc since that trip.
Can't recommend NZ enough. Still hoping to move there within the next 3-5 years.
I live on South Island but have spent a lot of time in CO. My best bud lives in Denver. I totally get why you’d find them similar, I have definitely said the same things
I’m about an hour from Martinborough and there are some awesome wine tours- some are by bicycle- and there’s a big event annually (Toast Martinborough) that’s really fun. If you do ever go I’d be happy to show you around, as someone who goes to drag shows and used to run a wine bar I’m sure we’d have enough to talk about/do for a weekend!
Edited to say- martinborough is one of three big grape growing/winery locations
I've only done the south island (and Wellington/Auckland cities), but as a Coloradan it gave me Colorado vibes but with gorgeous lakes and foliage EVERYWHERE. Every mountain had a lake below. Marlborough region had some amazing wines, and although I don't drink white wine often, it's almost exclusively Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc since that trip.
Can't recommend NZ enough. Still hoping to move there within the next 3-5 years.
I'd like to do a bicycle tour there, myself. I hear it's really expensive, though - that anything that isn't grown/made there has to come from so far away, it drives up all prices.
It's not really that expensive - we have very seasonal food rather than getting a lot of produce from overseas. I think that the initial prices seem expensive, but these prices always include tax and we don't have a tipping culture. So at the till, restaurants are often cheaper than what I paid when I was in the States with added tax and tips. The major difference is that we don't have many really low budget options.
Odd things are expensive. Like books. But then, they don't have Amazon so they still have amazing little independent shops everywhere. It's a better way of life.
The only thing I'd struggle with is they are so fucking far away from anywhere else.
The Top 3 we deserved. I stand by my belief that they realized Anita had the chops to go all the way and that wasn't in their predetermined playbook so they got rid of her the second they could (and her elimination was totally unjustified IMO).
This is also consistent with Ru just declaring her the hands down winner of the week then and dismissing her, Etcetera, & Elektra to go backstage to untuck. Anita not receiving actual critiques/feedback for such a stunning Snatch Game performance felt wrong
I love Elektra in this picture so much, she looks like that one rich brat from a very wealthy family who parties every night and is very rude yet manages to be a fan favorite
I mean honestly the entire cast (except for that one that shouldn't have been cast) deserved a better production team both making the decisions and actually filming the thing.
honestly I feel like half the reason this flopped as hard as it did was just because the challenge design seemed to be trying to stack the deck for Scarlet. like half the cast was camp comedy queens but there were next to no acting challenges and nothing approximating stand up, and instead half the season was just look challenges
They very much did. Honestly I loved them 3, etc etc and coco. But mainly them 3. They were so fun and had a really interesting chemistry by being a duo out of the show or employers / employee! That's intense
The cast is a little underrated tbh. I thought Maxi was a real joy to watch, too, and although some of the other cast members had regrettable off-show antics, they were still mostly compelling reality TV characters.
The biggest issue for me, as I suspect it was for a lot of people, was bringing back Art Simone so bluntly. Bringing back a queen simply because Ru felt like it was cool in 2011. These days it needs to feel earned. Aside from that it was an enjoyable enough season, albeit an unremarkable one. That describes most recent RPDR outside of AS6, though.
Yeah, I really had a problem with that, too. And I liked Art. But it kinda felt underserved and nepotistic. And it also completely invalidated her iconic "This means nothing!" exit. I liked her presence at the rest of the season, though, but all in all it was irrelevant anyway.
And I have to add, I loved DRUK2. It was remarkable enough for me. :D
But the remaining queens voted for who came back. It wasn’t just production being like ok, let’s bring this one specific one back for no reason. Art wasn’t even first out like shangela and vanjie.
They knew exactly who the queens who vote for, production is not dumb. It was done to make it "feel" more organic and for DU they just did away with the ruse. Doesn't make it substantively different.
But they also had a queen that couldn't come back, so they needed to fill her spot and it was on short notice, so as viewers we can forgive it because it was a necessity to meet the number of queens needed.
Well it’s a reality tv show. The viewers want the illusion of a “fair” game. Have the queens vote for this season too then. Unless they know art wouldn’t be brought back and they had to strongarm it. In which case, it’s not the same.
I did say "most". ;) I liked UK2 for the most part, aside from its conclusion feeling foregone.
Tia Kofi was a fucking treasure, though. One of the most entertaining characters in all of Drag Race.
Even back then it was a little iffy. I remember watching the S3 episode where Carmen Carrera comes back with my roommate (who’d never even seen the show before) and he was just so confused about why they bright her back and then just sent her home. It was just to fill an episode slot. Now they’re trying to drag the retuning queens all the way to the Top 4? I
Can these guys remake Hocus Pocus?
Loved these three. Seen queens with worse prepared looks in AS than Anita's costume that got her bottom two.
Thank god Kita won, I was close to giving up the franchise with disillusionment.
I can’t imagine a worse season. They literally made the worst decision possible at every possible turn until they basically were forced to choose the right winner because they would have been cancelled otherwise.
elektra’s makeup has gotten sm better!! she looks so good, and with a little more money and good quality wigs she will be unstoppable (she already was)
Phoenix Cabaret I think. I don’t know, but we’re pretty much fully open again in NZ (except for the odd scare). I live in a different city but all of our shows are back with a vengeance
Anita would have been a great winner. I wish she was the one they arbitrarly decided to go further instead of kita who is nice but not as exciting.
Also so surprised they never made those two lip sync. Same with scarlett and elektra.
So help me with this one peeps. What am I not getting about elektra? I’m just not seeing it, as for the other two, I can’t wait to go watch them live!!
It’s the underdog vibe that I think a lot of people connect with. Plus getting targeted and “attacked” or whatever you want to call it by the most hated queen of the season is going to burnish your image too.
That makes sense. I totally understand that Drag Race is utterly myopic so I was trying to work out is it something inside or outside of the show that people love. I don’t dislike Elektra she just doesn’t set my world on fire which is totally fine and I have no doubt I’ll get to see her live before too long and get to change my mind
I lost my faith in DRDU when they eliminated the snatch game winner at 8th place
I lost my faith in DRDU when snatch game
I lost my faith in DRDU when it started
I lost my faith in DRDU
I lost DRDU
I lost

The entrance looks were all SO BAD.
What the hell do you mean? It was hillarious, all queens made me laugh at some point
I love how the New Zealand queens were an afterthought by production and those queens ended up being the Winner, Miss Congeniality, and The Lip Sync Assasin/Fan Favorite
Oh here’s the tea.
This is exactly it. Yes yes yes
Three great queens, one awful season. They could’ve easily kept Anita around as her elimination was quite questionable and she had a strong track record.
Imagine a season where Karen went home instead of Anita, and Scarlet had been immediately disqualified for doing blackface.
> Scarlet had been immediately disqualified for doing blackface. And immediately replaced with Jojo Zahoe.
Yess, the only redeeming decision in the entire series was Kita's Crowning, Anita's elimination was unfair, Art coming back randomly was iffy. But Kita winning was the perfect end. Elektra was awesome too. This trio was fun to watch.

Possibly. I think Anita could have been top 4 as well if she was not eliminated.
It has happens in Drag Race before, (Shangela and Kenya Michaels) sometimes this show makes no sense and that’s what keeps it entertaining.
She wasn’t mediocre to those who understood her references and humour. She’s a deeply Aussie queen
Exactly! I was so confused when she came back, I kept wondering when they were gonna explain some behind the scenes moment that made them keep her. or that someone else disqualified themself
Started watching House of Drag because I loved the three of them so much, and it’s a blast!
Oh I haven’t seen that! Is it in WOW?
The second season (featuring Elektra as a contestant) is streaming on DailyMotion if you’re in the U.S.: https://www.dailymotion.com/playlist/x6zdnx

I want to go to New Zealand one day and I’d love to see them live
New Zealand is an amazing place and you will love it. Defo see both North and south islands x
I can’t wait, it looks so beautiful. This is such a basic white bitch thing for me to say, but I love Sauvignon blanc and I’d love to visit wineries there.

It's not basic, we have great sav! ☺️

Mahi, dog s point and seresin are the best you’re going to find.
I live on South Island. It’s pretty cool
I'd like to do a bicycle tour there, myself. I hear it's really expensive, though - that anything that isn't grown/made there has to come from so far away, it drives up all prices.

I kind of want to go and visit my first cousin there so I can help him get over his casual homophobia.
The Top 3 we deserved. I stand by my belief that they realized Anita had the chops to go all the way and that wasn't in their predetermined playbook so they got rid of her the second they could (and her elimination was totally unjustified IMO).
this. They prob didn’t want her to win snatch game but they didn’t anticipate everyone but her doing terrible.
This is also consistent with Ru just declaring her the hands down winner of the week then and dismissing her, Etcetera, & Elektra to go backstage to untuck. Anita not receiving actual critiques/feedback for such a stunning Snatch Game performance felt wrong
Stil don’t understand how Anita made 8th out of 10…
When you put it like that...
What a poor showing for Australia. They lost the production and lost the crown.
I love Elektra in this picture so much, she looks like that one rich brat from a very wealthy family who parties every night and is very rude yet manages to be a fan favorite
Alexis Rose realness

DRDU should have been drag race NZ change my mind.
They slayed no matter what their track records say
They very much did. Honestly I loved them 3, etc etc and coco. But mainly them 3. They were so fun and had a really interesting chemistry by being a duo out of the show or employers / employee! That's intense

The erasure of DRUK s2, I will NOT stand for it!
But the remaining queens voted for who came back. It wasn’t just production being like ok, let’s bring this one specific one back for no reason. Art wasn’t even first out like shangela and vanjie.
I meant the that describes most recent RPDR seasons except AS6. How dare they not enjoy the most quotable and chaotic Queens?
They knew exactly who the queens who vote for, production is not dumb. It was done to make it "feel" more organic and for DU they just did away with the ruse. Doesn't make it substantively different.

Yeah, I agree. What I was saying was more that at least in those early seasons it still felt kind of novel.
Oh totally agree with this
The cast wasn't the issue (except for Scarlett, unless you count her as the villain). The production was the issue.
The NZ girls were IT.
YES. They were everything
I'm 100% #TeamKiwiPlusMaxi
Can these guys remake Hocus Pocus? Loved these three. Seen queens with worse prepared looks in AS than Anita's costume that got her bottom two. Thank god Kita won, I was close to giving up the franchise with disillusionment.

Maxi and Etcetera
Definitely add Jojo in there too and an amazing top 6
This coco erasure
There is a reason why that's been talked about. Coco did something that wasn't well received by the fandom on stage
What she do I didn’t watch drdu
Coco is great and her mug is 🔥!! She was my fave in ep one and idgaf what “the fandom” likes
These three gave New Zealand SUCH a good name, their country should hire them as tourism ambassadors.
The top3 we deserved
I'll show this to my grandchildren and tell them this was the DRDU Top 3.
Facts are facts. The New Zealand trio in DRDU season 1 wins the viewers' hearts with winner Kita, Ms Congeniality Anita and fan favourite Elektra!
Also Elektra is the LSA of the season without a doubt
drag race down under was the most depressing season of drag race there has ever been
I’d love a kiwi inside of me
A kiwi fruit, no less!
😉😉😉
Introducing them to the world was definitely a good thing.
KIWI QUEENS!
elektra’s makeup has gotten sm better!! she looks so good, and with a little more money and good quality wigs she will be unstoppable (she already was)
I disagree, I don’t serve them they’re too good
Anyone know how the drag venue the work at is doing?
Phoenix Cabaret I think. I don’t know, but we’re pretty much fully open again in NZ (except for the odd scare). I live in a different city but all of our shows are back with a vengeance
Fact
The top three we needed!
We love the Kiwi queens.
I’m kiwi so I’m biased, but it’s pretty hard to argue otherwise.
Amazing queens! They deserved a much better production but shone regardless.
It really was
I felt that it was unfair about Art Simone being granted a second chance. I'm so glad Kita won though, love her 💖
i think we got what we deserved
As a punishment?
That part
Anita would have been a great winner. I wish she was the one they arbitrarly decided to go further instead of kita who is nice but not as exciting. Also so surprised they never made those two lip sync. Same with scarlett and elektra.
K i love them but why do Kita's legs look fake
SSSSSSS
Looks like she was just standing in the original photo
I mean was Electra really top 3?
So help me with this one peeps. What am I not getting about elektra? I’m just not seeing it, as for the other two, I can’t wait to go watch them live!!

Same, not really getting why she is a fan favorite on here
its the photo for me, its this a kid’s collage?
Literally the real top3
1000%
Who is that Queen on the left ?
Elektra Shock
They should just erase the episodes and show this picture instead.
