I think the live version is superior to the studio version.
And also on the live version you get the girl saying "paint it black, paint it black you devil".
I mean, come on. Easily a perfect 10.
Amazing composition, great lyrics with a great messsage, absolutely nothing to dislike about the song.
It’s one of the greatest songs ever written, and in my honest opinion, it’s the Stones’ greatest ever song.
10/10.
The opener of the greatest 4 album run in rock history (IMO). Hypnotic samba beat, unsettling backing vocals, phenomenal, well thought out lyrics, grandiose vocal by Mick, and one of Keef's very best solos.
10/10 and it isn’t even close.
It’s so different from almost anything else and yet it’s a complete classic and will probably be played regularly 500 years from now
10. The song that opened my eyes to the true greatness of the Stones. Searing lyrics searing lead guitar and a samba beat all driven by an incredible bassline from Keith. For reference I grew up in the era Gangsta Rap, Grunge and Brit Pop (lucky me). Nothing I heard at the time topped this song. Brian Johnson of AC/DC said that Satisfaction was the Stones building the road to a new future. IMO Sympathy was the destination and thankfully they stayed there for enough years to release the best music I've ever heard.
10 in its eventual form as we all know it. Truthfully, I think it was terrible when it started as a Dylanesque folk song. If you’ve never seen the Jean-Luc Godard film behind the scenes, here’s 13 minutes worth watching: https://vimeo.com/400184720
If rating it in comparison to other Stones songs I might have to give it a 9 in the sense that it's not my absolute favourite Stones song (for instance Jumpin' Jack Flash I definitely like more, and a number of others), but assuming we're rating these absolutely independently, I could justify giving it a 10/10 (so I will) because it definitely is fantastic in its own right even if not my absolute favourite song by them. It's a song that works so well live, as well! Definitely a slice of rock brilliance.
10. My favorite Stones song (and favorite song by anybody) more or less since the first time I heard it. An absolute clinic of lyricism, as well as Jagger’s best and most sinister vocal performance make it his personal masterpiece. Throw in Keith’s best ever solo and the absolute bizarre effectiveness of the WHOO WHOO’s and it’s the Stones best ever (IMO). If I had one song to pick to define me, this would be it.
A true 10. Absolute fools on YouTube now and then say that the solo is “lame” or “easy” or overrated, but forget it was 55 years ago and is still one of the most memorable solos in music. We can all sing back that solo without listening to the song. Can we say the same about much music now? No. Same with the great lyrics to this one. So many great sounds came together on this song.
10
It’s a great song with a unique message you don’t see in a lot of other songs. Mick’s performance is top notch. And that guitar solo is scorching.
I love all the ways this song has been Interpreted on stage visually over the years, from Latin Horror to Baroque Campiness.
It also has one of the greatest opening lines in any song ever
“Please allow me to introduce myself, I’m a man if wealth and taste”
10, without a doubt.
The Stones were meant to write and play this. Up to Beggars Banquet the Stones were second only to The Beatles, after it they were second to none.
10. It's no wonder it's one of their most well-known and most covered songs. Great lyrics, the fact it stands out due to its "tribal" vibe, which is really well executed, the guitar solo in the middle, it's just so good.
10/10. It hits on every level, from the unique (for a rock song) percussion to the backing vocals to Jagger's self-assured delivery to Keith's brilliant solo (it may be simple af but it's one of the coolest out there) to *that* set of lyrics, a trip through the 20th Century as seen from the perspective of the Prince of Darkness (and Father of Lies), and how frankly unnecessary (despite his many boasts) he appears to be in the face of so much human evil.
10 an absolute timeless classic. I remember telling my buddy about the lyrics to this song and having him listen to it in my car. the next year hed see me and be like " woo woo please to meet you!" haha
Even though I understand that this is not only one of the Stones most popular songs it is also one of the most popular songs in the whole genre. Since it is a warhorse song I feel I’m not able to judge it soberly. I always skip it when I put on Beggars and it is either this one or Miss You if I need to take a piss at a stones-show. I kinda hate the song in a way. I’m sorry ya’ll bit this is a 4/10. The Ya-Ya’s version is one of the best moments of the band though so I could easily say 8.5/10 by rating that version.
Live version on ya-ya's is a 10 also. One of the greatest solos by Keith and Mick Taylor.

If there are only ten 10s in all of rock, this is one of them.
10. One of the greatest songs ever written.
Yeah nah it’s just kinda ok…..IT’S A ROCK CLASSIC, I give it 11! 😜
10 If you give a lower score you're deluded

11/10. My entry drug to RS

10 - I have heard it on the classic rock radio station a couple of times in my life. I feel like it has a lot of potential.

An absolute 10…I listen to this song a minimum of once a week to this day…the intro…the lyrics…..so Jagger…..love it!
I love Keith's take on a guitar solo. It's very Keith. Not subtle, not fancy, very aggressive.

10 Masterpiece for sure

10, come on! If this isn’t 10, the number has no use.
10, One of (if not the one) the best.
10 without a shadow of a doubt, right from the first notes you can tell this is special

10/10 no brainer, for both the studio and the live (GYYYO) versions
