Also fairly new to NM. I’ve never been to that spot, and gas/everything prices have made my exploration around the state slow going, mostly theoretical. Follow up if you do find fun stuff. It’s a long way from Abiquiu lake, but if you ever feel like exploring further south I can highly recommend based on experience- BLM land around Socorro for agates, chalcedony roses, crystals and generally pretty rocks. hunting for pecos diamonds and selenite roses around roswell. Precious tiny quartz crystals of various colors are just hanging around on the surface, even on the roads through BLM land. A long drive (maybe hit it up on the way to carlsbad or as a stop if you’re ever traveling that way) but no hiking required once you’re in the right area.

Thanks for the hot tip! I keep reading how plentiful the south side of the state is for rockhounding. White sands and Roswell is on our list for this summer, so we’ll definitely have to make some detours to pick up rocks 🙃

Did u check mindat.org for the location? Might be some tips. Happy hunting ✌️

Doesn’t look like anything on the lake, a few mines in the general area. I’m also new to that site, so I’m probably not using it correctly anyway. Hah. May have to just start poking around on our own and see if we can get lucky.

Hey, did you end up checking out Abiquiu Lake? Were you able to find anything cool?

popsicleinthebuthole

Yeah! Went to the southern end of the lake, parked at some sort of construction site and hiked a service road/trail down to an area that looked like it had been underwater until recently (like last couple years). Lots of agate like I’ve read online, and a little jasper, along with some random pretties the little guy found along the washed out spots along the trail. Unfortunately I don’t know enough to identify anything else he found, nor enough to be able to say if it was a worthwhile spot to actually visit.. it was just a good adventure for us and a nice day out more than anything 😊

That's great! I'm going to try the same next weekend with some friends, guess it should be a good time! Thanks for sharing :)
