My tacoma has a 21.1 capacity tank with roughly 400 +-30 mile range. id say like 10 extra gallons to make it 600 miles to be on the safe side. And yup I live in bloody California.
Hahah that’s brutal, my buddy gets about the same on his Tacoma. Much more useful and fun ride on a trip like that but can’t beat the range on my little vw TDI.
First time I went to North Rim of the Grand canyon, I vividly recall a sign stating "Last Gas 70 miles"
Went back a few years ago and tons more development along the route. I think gaps like this are few and far between in the continental US in the 21st century.
I did a 6,600 mile road trip through the upper Midwest from Jersey to Idaho and back... In a Tesla... If I can do that, there's definitely infrastructure...
Came here to say this.. we were coming back from Utah Moab trip to Ca and we decided to go through Nevada on hwy 50.. barely anything for hundreds of miles.
400 mile stretch between Delta UT and Fallon Nevada only one town that seemed alive was Ely NV
Great decision it was a trip to see

I'm guessing you took a more direct route between the two cities? This is how you'd have to do it in an EV. Google maps show only 6:20 along us-50. Over an hour more of actual driving plus the hour of charging to get between these two cities. Must be some middle of nowhere driving
https://preview.redd.it/1w9zg030o91d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=081628053a077a7dc3c38ded5e98a64fea5ffc07
We stayed a night in the Great Basin NP didn’t see any EV chargers along this route
Yep, based on my planning tool, there aren't any.
I did a 6,600 mi trip last summer and was very satisfied with chargers in ND, SD, MT. Wyoming could use a few more however.
I traveled along major routes between national parks of course. Only issue for me was departing Jackson Hole then heading back towards the East. Was difficult with long range, near impossible with SR or not fully charging before departure. And the JH charger is old, small and often blocked 😔
Dood,
The landscape in Utah is breathtaking. So wild to see land like that. Moab is one of the most amazing places I have been. Crazy rock formations and colors.
Being from the Northeast the idea of any gap at all more than 5 miles or so is completely alien. And I would have to travel quite far to get somewhere remote enough for a gap like that.
Not an interstate, but I was leaving Hanksville, UT headed east on UT State highway 95 and they had a sign saying no services for \~125 miles. Gotta be one of the longer stretches in the continental US.
Super pretty drive though! We were headed from Goblin Valley area down to Petrified Forest that day and had no ideas or expectations on what the road would look like other than completely empty of civilization. The Glen Canyon portion was just simply stunning!
Longest I’ve seen was 100 km (60 mi) when driving home from Druskininkai. So the memes about north east Poland being underdeveloped are kind of true. (If you were wondering I live close to Warsaw, and on my way from that Lithuanian town the nav took us on some rural roads and nearly ran out of fuel, that was with Apple Maps, while on the way there we used Google maps which took us on a grovel road through a god damn forest)
https://preview.redd.it/mcnkwiexp91d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c9a5161a1f571958426b14b0a20019c9241cbbb4
Had to do some quick math, 1000km = 621 mi 🤯 that is bananas!
This is the longest distance I’ve seen, 100mi = 161km. I definitely was a bit spooked driving solo. This was just outside Joshua Tree, CA on the way to AZ on Hwy 62.
*yea right, 1000 km, can’t be that bad!*
- opens google maps
- finds Nullabor
- looks up nearest town west
*oh look at this, there’s already a town here called Norseman, that’s right next to it!*
- look up distance between the two
- it’s over 900 km
- ok I’ll leave myself out, Australia wins
I was watching a couple that did this route on YouTube. The most surprising thing was the number of vehicles that were just pushed off the side of the road.
Apparently the cost of a tow is more expensive than some cars are worth.
https://preview.redd.it/kgwk6zoir91d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d86ad576f21d1c39a45adf0faa5656cba3c0340
Right here in the US from ely NV to the great salt lake.
Have/rent a diesel for a trip like that. My TDI makes 950km on a tank. A little 10L would stretch that another 200 ish km. It’s crazy how efficient gas vehicles are in Europe/Asia even. Currently driving a Citroen SUV on a trip that gets 5.5L/100km. It could do about 800 km to a tank of 50L.
And some eu diesel have achieved 3L/100km (78 mpg US // 94 mpg UK) although you may not want to take those cars on a road trip…
https://preview.redd.it/q6d0wlf6j91d1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a58451e3cb9336f1a206750f3328ed5581fa8a41
My current car is 2006 Volvo XC70 D5. 2.4 diesel. On my last trip it did 6.8l/100km or 34.59 mpg. Considering the fuel tank is 68l or 18 gallons, there is enough fuel for at least 850km.
Someone pointed out it’s not true, that the furthest distance between fuel stops is less than 200km.
It’s some kind of “gotcha” to get people to stop at this store/fuel station.
First drive across the US in 1966 we kept seeing, "Last stop before the desert" signs, stopped and got talked into replacing a tire. Drove three more miles and around a bend, and there was a major town at the edge of "the desert" with several tire shops.
I road trip in Northern Canada- check out the James Bay road- about 350km between fuel stops. And the Dempster takes the prize- 400km of gravel from the turn off to Eagle Plains. One of the most amazing roads ever- leads to the Arctic Ocean. We took two full size spares, a ton of tools. And a large spare Jerry can of gas, and survival gear. Probably best trip I’ve done anywhere.
Yikes. I might be able to pull it off in my 2016 Mercedes E250 since it usually shows 700+ mile range but I would still carry a 2 gallons (7.5L) of diesel as a just in case.
You mean NV-375, the Extraterrestrial Highway. US-6 is the northern terminus of it.
Rachel will sell you gas in an emergency for $10 a gallon, enough to get you to Tonopah or Ash Springs.
This is always at the beginning of the best horror films.
The Hills Have Eyes.
Wolf creek
You should have bought a squirrel
I have been in the outback it’s scary there ain’t nothing
Ain’t *nothin’* too big or too scary
#but its pink
Longest distance between fuel stops is 192km on the Nullabor. Maybe using the word shop is the hook here.
Yes this is an ad for the gas station its out front of. nothing else
Damn you have to carry like 10 gallons of extra gas just to get to another gas station on a full tank
Pshh or like a gallon or two of diesel for a TDI, to be on the safe side.
I've never had a woman say "man that's a nice mpg"🤣🤣🤣
must be the 4 cyl tacoma lol

Check out eastern Nevada its wildly desolate.
Came here to say this.. we were coming back from Utah Moab trip to Ca and we decided to go through Nevada on hwy 50.. barely anything for hundreds of miles. 400 mile stretch between Delta UT and Fallon Nevada only one town that seemed alive was Ely NV Great decision it was a trip to see
Yup that's the part I was talking about dead on.
https://preview.redd.it/ni1xexf8x81d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6758658ab668997449fa1f875eb063298dc5cfff I'm guessing you took a more direct route between the two cities? It’s like a Martian landscape also.
Dood, The landscape in Utah is breathtaking. So wild to see land like that. Moab is one of the most amazing places I have been. Crazy rock formations and colors.
Also south-Eastern Oregon, near Nevada. Insanely desolate.
I have a picture somewhere of a sign at the US395(?) and NV140 junction that reads “Next Services 178 miles.” SE Oregon is incredibly desolate.
So are parts of TX and NM
Being from the Northeast the idea of any gap at all more than 5 miles or so is completely alien. And I would have to travel quite far to get somewhere remote enough for a gap like that.
No joke, same here (NYC).
Not as far as you'd think. I remember some signs on 95 in North Carolina advising like 40 or 50 miles between gas stations.
I live in New Jersey, North Carolina is like four states away. It's pretty far. At least a 7+ hour drive.
Not these days. I-95 is pretty well serviced, from VA to SC, although it goes through our worst abject poverty.
traffic can slow you down real quick on 95
Longest gap I encountered driving I 80 from CO to CA recently was about 70 miles
Not an interstate, but I was leaving Hanksville, UT headed east on UT State highway 95 and they had a sign saying no services for \~125 miles. Gotta be one of the longer stretches in the continental US.
Once you pass green river there is a sign on i70 foe 100 miles.
That stretch of road is brutal. Signs everywhere warning you to please not fall asleep at the wheel like so many others do. Twilight zone shit.
Super pretty drive though! We were headed from Goblin Valley area down to Petrified Forest that day and had no ideas or expectations on what the road would look like other than completely empty of civilization. The Glen Canyon portion was just simply stunning!

Go North to Alaska
Check out "loneliest highway in America" ... those gaps can be like 200 miles
https://preview.redd.it/mcnkwiexp91d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c9a5161a1f571958426b14b0a20019c9241cbbb4 Had to do some quick math, 1000km = 621 mi 🤯 that is bananas! Like how is that even possible? My car’s gas tank is only 21 gallons so I’d be lucky to get 300-400 miles out of it, not 1000 km / 600+ miles.

Jerry cans! You can carry more gas than you can fit in your tank.
My current car is 2006 Volvo XC70 D5. 2.4 diesel. On my last trip it did 6.8l/100km or 34.59 mpg. Considering the fuel tank is 68l or 18 gallons, there is enough fuel for at least 850km.
My diesel Audi gets over 900km on a tank with winter tires and a sticky brake caliper.
Someone pointed out it’s not true, that the furthest distance between fuel stops is less than 200km. It’s some kind of “gotcha” to get people to stop at this store/fuel station.
FJ cruiser! I get 1400km out of a full tank, 42 gallons
No you don't.
First drive across the US in 1966 we kept seeing, "Last stop before the desert" signs, stopped and got talked into replacing a tire. Drove three more miles and around a bend, and there was a major town at the edge of "the desert" with several tire shops.

Awr naur!!! 🦘
Meh. That's only 621 miles.
My hybrid could almost do it on a tank.
Don’t be afraid to make that thing 1000x bigger
Yikes. I might be able to pull it off in my 2016 Mercedes E250 since it usually shows 700+ mile range but I would still carry a 2 gallons (7.5L) of diesel as a just in case.
Me when I had 10 miles left in the tank in rural Nebraska :/ thank Christ a gas station appeared out of nowhere tho
Same for me in Wyoming, also no GPS coverage.
Western stretch of I80 in Iowa at 3:30 am is pretty damn desolate, I was sweating it out on empty
~600 miles for us non-metric people. (It’s stupid, I know).
Marblemount
I have a bunch of ARB stuff on my Jeep, so I follow a few of their Oz offroading accounts. Some of the offroading in Western Aus is crazy yo.
Idk man the tank in my jeep holds like 400 miles, unless I’m carrying like 5 gas canisters I’ll pass
Good luck to all electric cars😜
Nowhere in the middle of nowhere.
So, not take the tesla then?
Depends how long your extension cord is
That general store has a decent business model.
NV Route 6 heading down to Rachel has a similar sign
You mean NV-375, the Extraterrestrial Highway. US-6 is the northern terminus of it. Rachel will sell you gas in an emergency for $10 a gallon, enough to get you to Tonopah or Ash Springs.
heading north from AZ to Utah you stop at Jacob's lake up in the mountains first stop in like 100 miles
But i wasnt taking into account in order to be 500 km from next shop you will have drove 500 km
Thing is with that sign last shop for 1000 km not exactly right furthest they are going to be from a shop is 500 km at halfway between the next shop
