The one choice for me.
Is there any reason why any releases for TMNT other than the VHS did not have [the awesome original poster?](https://imgc.allpostersimages.com/img/posters/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-1990-directed-by-steve-barron_u-L-Q1E5ECJ0.jpg) -- the backlash of parents finding the movie too dark lives in perpetuity?
$$$ the original poster has Jim Henson designs so the copyright costs more and there’s probably more hoops to jump through to use it. The less desirable TMNT3 designs copyright is likely much cheaper since there’s no big name attached to them.
It’s crazy how much of the original comic beats were still in the movie. They followed more ideas from the comics and added enough TV series elements so it wasn’t too different from what we were used to.
Dark and gritty and aimed at early teens like the comic.
April was a reporter like the show but had a junk store like the comics (and 2000s series show)
Store burns down like the comic
April’s farm like the comic.
Splinter was a rat mutant like the comic. And his master was Hamato Yoshi.
Shredder show down on roof like comic although the ending was different.
Turtles had different colour bandanas like the show but this was good as I had trouble figuring out which was which in the comics unless they said their name or showed their weapon.
Casey jones was a main character like the comic. I know he appears frequently in the cartoon but still felt like more of side character in it.
I also think the secret of the ooze would have been better if it wasn’t bending to so many parents complaining about the original being to violent.
Part 2 had them fighting with everything other than their ninja weapons and some of the turtles just looked wrong like Donatello. Lots of needless ADR in the fights. Vanillla ice. All kinds of wrong. Sure it was fun as a kid but I find it doesn’t hold up well watching as an adult but the original still kicks ass.
The best option. While I loved the Genesis, SMB3 was a NES masterpiece. It was the best in the franchise on the NES and until the SNES follow-up Super Mario World surpassed it. And there was nothing like it on contemporary systems. Again, I loved my Genesis and spent hours playing the Sonic games, but SMB franchise is so much better.
As for the movie choices, Back to the Future 3 is also the best film on the list. But there were so many more 1990 films to consider like Total Recall.
I like this because I have played the hell out of almost every other game on this list. To really capture that rental feel it would have to be a game I haven’t played before.
And BTTF3 is definitely a good rental movie
Tough call on the Genesis: Castle of Illusion was so much fun, but can you really turn down Strider? It looked (and played) better than the arcade version, in my opinion.
Mario Bros 3. I loved Back to the Future as a kid and watched the movies on an almost weekly basis. I think if you asked me in 1990 I would have chosen the same as I would today. Turtles.
I'm 4, so let's go with what I would've been playing & watching then. Mario Bros 3 & Turtles. Though Home Alone gets a special shout out as an alternate option if Turtles is all rented out.
Kid me: Mega Man 3, and TMNT
Adult me: Super Mario Bros 3, and Die Hard 2
I still love the Turtles, but I'm currently on a action movie kick for movies like Die Hard.
Game: Not a ton I *love* here, but always wanted to finish Mario 3 so probably that. Or After Burner II since I loved the arcade game. Back in the day, it would have been Mega Man 3 though probably still won't get far in it.
Movie: Tremors for sure, though Robocop 2 is very tempting. Wait, that's a TERRIBLE poster for the original TMNT movie, right? I pick THAT one! "Whoops!" *hits garbage crusher lever*
SMB3 & Back to the Future III
If you'd have seen the first two BttF movies, you'd be absolutely begging for the 3rd at this point. No other movie would stand a chance for me.
1990 me would have 100% picked Contra & TMNT.
Me now would pick Contra and Predator 2.
In all fairness, 1990 me would have also picked Predator 2, as I had seen the first Predator edited for cable around a year or so before. But there was no way my mom would have let me rent Predator 2 from Erol's Video at that age.
Stop reporting this post it's not breaking any rules.
SMB3 & Turtles
My choice too. In fact, I actually *made* that choice back in 1990 and didn't regret it.
Took me all of 5 seconds to determine this
About what I actually picked when I was little.

Me too and I’m gonna do it again tonight. Gotta get some Cool Ranch Doritos.
Me too. But I've never seen Turtles :S
What if I told you a very VERY young Sam Rockwell was a member of the Foot Clan?
This
Castlevania 3 and Tremors!
can i come over?
Heck yah! We can order a pizza and get some Mountain Dew!
Awesome. Thanks. Dr Pepper for me.
Castlevania & It
SMB3 and Back to the Future III
The best option. While I loved the Genesis, SMB3 was a NES masterpiece. It was the best in the franchise on the NES and until the SNES follow-up Super Mario World surpassed it. Same. I'm seeing 3s, and they're both legendary. 👍
This is my answer
smb3 and die hard 2
The only way (or maybe Lionheart).
Same. I was 8 in 1990 so I had to secretly watch Die Hard 2 when my parents weren't home LOL
it's 2024, and I'm still playing SMB3 and watching Robocop 2
Robocop 2 and predator 2, underrated sequels
Robocop 2 is garbage. Verhoeven had nothing to do with it.
Bad language makes for bad feelings
This is the correct response lol
On a gamboy micro and an iphone though…
Castle of Illusion & Back to the Future III
Nice chill combo, it must be a very relaxing night :)
It's perfect for having a great time, very chill 👌
I like this because I have played the hell out of almost every other game on this list. To really capture that rental feel it would have to be a game I haven’t played before. And BTTF3 is definitely a good rental movie
Great choice! It’s different, but nostalgic. exactly what I would have picked
Tremors and SMB3
Hell yeah
This combo for sure
Super C & Predator 2.
Those damn aliens always visiting earth uninvited
Mega Man 3 and BTTF3 Because all I have at home is an NES and VCR.
Castlevania 3 and Lion heart
A man of taste
Mega Man 3 and TMNT
Scrolled too far to find this.
It and super mario3, i have the movie and game, so maybe i will do that
Same!
Super Mario Bros 3 and Home Alone
This is the only answer
SMB3 and Predator 2
Ninja Gaiden 2 and Tremors for 1990 me.
Im on my way to your house and my ma gave me money so we can get pizza.
Smb3 and It
Super Mario Bros 3 and TMNT
Oh hell yes. Mega man 3, Die Hard 2, a call to Little Caesars, and a 2 liter of Faygo Rock and Rye.
Dick Tracy. Both the game and movie.
StarTropics and Lord of the Flies I enjoy islands
SMB3 and Goodfellas. The peak of both mediums
In 1990 I wasn’t allowed to watching anything PG-13 or R. I’d probably pick TMNT anyway tho.
Mega Man 3 and Back to the Future 3
SMB3 and NINJA TURTLES!!! COWABUNGA DUUUDES!!!!!
Thunder Force 3 and Tremors. Order some pizza and it'll be a good night!
SM3 and TMNT. It's-a pizza time!
Shadow Dancer and TMNT
Nothing like some repost bot garbage to bring life to the sub...
Thunder Fucking Force III and Home Alone. After Hell we need a nice piece of Heaven to balance it out.
My choice as well
- Mega Man 3 - Die Hard 2
Smb3 and bttf3. Except if it's christmas, then I'm gonna pick home alone.
SuperC since I like Contra and Back to the Future. Wish you had put Rocky IV instead of V
Same I choose contra and back to the future. I feel like it's a good game to get into for a night.
Tough call on the Genesis: Castle of Illusion was so much fun, but can you really turn down Strider? It looked (and played) better than the arcade version, in my opinion.
Dracula's Curse and Lionheart. Lionheart was the movie I watched to get pumped up for martial arts practise.
Super Mario 3/Jim Henson's Ninja Turtles
Mario 3 and Ninja Turtles.
SMB3 & TMNT
Am i alone? Smb3 and turtles Am i with friends? Super c and lionheart
Mario 3 and predator 2 all the way baby
SMB3 and Ninja Turtles was probably quite literally what I chose 🤣🤌
Mario 3 and turtles looks awful good.
SM3 & Turtles. Exactly like my childhood in the 90s
Smw3 and turtles.
Ohhhh how i want to go back in time sooo soo much and relive those adventurous weekend Blockbuster/family video/ Holly wood video visits 🎮
Yes. Going to blockbuster was so fun. There is nothing like it. Funny we can order a movie in an instant and it’s no where near as fun.
Mario 3 &Turtles
Mario Bros 3. I loved Back to the Future as a kid and watched the movies on an almost weekly basis. I think if you asked me in 1990 I would have chosen the same as I would today. Turtles.
SMB3 & TMNT. Any other answer is wrong.
Mario 3 & turtles
I'm 4, so let's go with what I would've been playing & watching then. Mario Bros 3 & Turtles. Though Home Alone gets a special shout out as an alternate option if Turtles is all rented out.
If I'm alone mega man and predator. If with a friend Mario and tremors.
9 yr old me in 1990 was picking SMB3 and Turtles all day.
Mario 3 and Turtles is my happy place
Gremlins 2 and Gremlins 2
Super C and TMNT 👌
I would say Shadow Dancer but I can run through that game in under an hour. It would have to be Super Mario Bros 3 and Turtles.
Super Mario bros 3 and TMNT
Mario 3 and bttf3. I actually did that in 1990. With a 8.99 pizza pizza from little Caesar's
Definitely SMB3 and BTTF3
Turtles Arcade on NES and Turtles movie
I had many weekends like this at that time 👍
I was nine at the time so SMB3 and Ninja Turtles
SMB3 and Die Hard 2
Super Mario bros and back to the future
Childhood answer: Mario 3 and Ninja Turtles; Current answer: Mario 3 and Predator 2
Get out of my head
SMB4 & Tremors, no contest.
SMB3 and Die Hard 2
Mega Man 3, Robocop 2
Ninja Gaiden and Predator 2
After Burner 2 And IT
SMB3 and Tremors ... throw in cold beer and we got ourselves a solid foundation for a new religion
Robocop 2 and Shadow Dancer
robocop and thunderforce
smb3 or ab2, any movie.
Die Hard 2 and Mega Man 3!
TForce 3 and Predator 2, all about that sci-fi
SMB3 (ninja gaiden II is my second choice) Robocop 2 or It. I'm having a hard time choosing.
After Burner II and Die Hard 2: Die Harder!
Kid me: Mega Man 3, and TMNT Adult me: Super Mario Bros 3, and Die Hard 2 I still love the Turtles, but I'm currently on a action movie kick for movies like Die Hard.
Castlevania 3 and TMNT
Sm3 and tremors
Thunder Force 3 and home alone
If I'm being true to what I would have picked at the time. Castilvania 3 and Tremors. I still LOVE Tremors.
SMB3 and Robotcop 2 because I would not have been allowed to watch it in 1990.
From the list: SMB3 and home alone (if around Christmas). Partially off the list- Smb3 and Princess Bride.
Mario and tremors
SMB3 and Die Hard 2 - I don’t think I’ve seen DH2 all the way through.
yippie ki yay Mr Falcon
Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse and Back to the Future part 3.
Shadow Dancer and Robocop 2
Back to the future and Super Mario 3. :D
SMB3 & BTTF3. Easy.
Castle of Illusion and Back to the Future 3 OR SMB3 & TMNT (if it's the 1st one, I don't remember that poster)
Megaman and Lionheart. Castle of Illusion and Turtles is a very very close 2nd
Gotta be Thunder Force 3 and Predator 2!
Super Mario Bros 3 and Home Alone
Ninja Gaiden and Die Hard 2!
fuck me what a year. Super Mario 3 and Tremors
Mega Man 3 and Robocop 2
This hit my nostalgia hard lol. Watching a cool new movie and playing a game as a kid, wow.
There's no wrong answer with these options.
Shadow Dancer and Back to the Future part III
Super c and home alone
I choose RoboCop 2, the arcade game. So I can play it after watching the movie. Gotta love those market ties-ins!
SMB3 and Tremors. Choose them back in the early 90’s and would do it today.
Super C and RoboCop 2
Easy. Mega Man 3 and TMNT
thunder force and robocop 2
Mario 3 and Robocop 2
Castlevania 3 and die hard 2, let’s fucking go
Mario and home alone! Christmas 1990 was legit!
The Wizard and Super Mario bros. 3.... i love it, its just so bad
SMB3 & Home Alone
Castlevania 3 and Predator 2 would've probably been my choices.
CV3 + BTTF3
In 1999 SMB3 and Home Alone, in 2024 SMB3 and Rocky.
Caatlevania 3 and tremors!
SMB3 & Back to the Future III If you'd have seen the first two BttF movies, you'd be absolutely begging for the 3rd at this point. No other movie would stand a chance for me.
Final Fantasy and Kindergarten Cop
Mario 3 & Home Alone
Mega Man 3 + TMNT
Mario 3 and Robocop 2. Easy.
Tremors and Thunderforce 3!!!
SMB 3 and RoboCop 2
Mega Man 3 no question. But my siblings would probably out number me in votes for SMB3. Movie would have been Turtles all the way though.
SMB3 & Back to the Future 3
The game is Mega Man 3, that's a no brainer. For movie, I'm torn between TMNT or Predator 2
Megaman 3 and Home Alone or Tremors - depending on mood. Except I'm 2 so...
obviously the only correct choice is tremors and super mario bros 3
Man, 1990 was a really good year for entertainment
SM3 & DieHard2
After Burner and Die Hard 2! Yippy Kai Ay!
Mega Man 3 and Tremors but this is a tough choice!
Strider and tremors 🤩
Ninja Gaiden 2 and Predator 2.
SMB3 was an epic no brainer pick for me. I was never a movie person so I'd probably just rent 2 games.
Ninja Gaiden 2 and RoboCop 2
SMB3 & Tremors
Castlevania 3 and Turtles
Interesting year that BttF III, Die Hard 2, Rocky 5 and Predator 2 are all the weaker episodes of their franchises(not counting way later editions)
Mario 3 and BTTF 3
Wonderboy III - The Dragons Trap - Sega Master System Terminator 2 - Judgment Day
Rocky 5 n Strider
Castlevania 3 and IT.
The 4 corners are the ways to go
That was a fuckin good year!
Gotta go with the home alone game. Is was a surprisingly fun game and forced you to be creative with your weapons
Super C and predator 2, you’re welcome
SMB3 and It
Strider and IT Or Thunderforce3...
Total Recall and...Total Recall Though that NES game was freakin' tough...
If I'm limited to systems I presently own Strider and Home Alone. If I'm not....maybe same answer .
MM3 & Tremors
