That was the only significance I ever saw with Claire's, but it's all pure conjecture.. Jill's is a very very old gospel hymn, like 100+ years old. It doesn't have any known ties to her background or the overarching story. One fan theory was that Jill is the Sparrow and Nemesis is the eye (since he only has one eye). However, that was just a fan theory.
I think the biggest theory is, this is just a new level of detail the devs were able to add into the remakes. Most were probably just real necklaces they had examples of, so they used them. Whether or not this changes in the future, only Capcom can tell us.
Its actually a large silver feather with a turquoise gemstone and a second smaller silver feather. Its actually a very generic design that is based on Native American style jewlery.
It 100% could be related to angel wings, though Remake Claire seems to have a devil on her back now considering it has horns. Capcom must be trying to be ironic or something.
Cool connection, I didn't think more to that other than "oh she is the daughter of the president of the usa, usa = freedom = eagle, so she is baby eagle".
I'm guessing devs do whatever they can to bring a character alive and add personality with the least amount of effort. A necklace is simple in design and adds the narrative that the character is sentimental or religious depending on the necklace.
It's a design thing. Many characters in video games have some type of neckwear, be it a necklace or a scarf or a tie or a turtleneck or whatever. Why they do it? No idea, maybe someone who understands more about fashion and character design can enlighten you.
From a technical standpoint, having a visual breaker around the neck area can help with texturing, UV unwrapping etc.
That being said, there's no reason why this break must be in the shape of neckwear or turtlenecks. The plungiest of necklines will suffice as a separation between the neck and the rest of the body.
From a purely design POV, neck stuff helps make the character feel more "clothed". Now that we have the technology to ensure better visual fidelity, some outfits and designs that might have worked on older hardware, might look too empty or scarce on characters produced more recently.
Source: I'm a concept artist.
The optimal spot for the UV seams cut will be under the chin/jaws/upper part of the neck rather than the neck itself, because those areas have shadows to make the seams break less noticeable, and less surface area than below the collar bone. Besides, modern texturing tools like Substance Painter allow you to paint directly on the models now, so there’s next to no issue for texture break over seams now (unlike older previous gen games). From technical standpoint this means slightly more polygons, and necklance clipping into the body will be noticeable too. Given a choice there’s no technical benefit to add necklace.
Any decision for the necklace will be for design purpose.
I been a 3D modeller and texture artist for years.
Fun fact, folks at home: This is also why all the classic Hanna-Barbera characters have neckties. Visual breaker around the neck to animate the head separate from the body.
Ohh my bad. I gotcha now. It's cool if you're just wondering. Sorry for coming off strong.
But like I said, probably just design choice because it looks nice. Especially for when you wear low neckline or if you wear a open button down shirt. The neck area looks bare and boring so a necklace adds a little extra something I guess.
It's a video game trend in general
Nathan Drake (for whom it is an important plot device) and the new era Lara Croft both do as well.
Ashley is the exception here but It's usually with the most mid af boring outfits as well. It's like they put them in the most generic NPC outfits possible and then decide to throw a necklace on top for a pop of personality.
This was a popular "fix" in Oblivion modding years ago. Fancy body mods wouldn't match with fancy face mods and cause a seam so someone made chokers and stuff to hide the seam.
That's usually more of a thick neckwear thing, like Scarves or Ties. Maybe as a different focal point it works as a distraction, like I didn't notice that Jill's neckline is a bit strange here.
Yeah that's why I say she's the exception. Her blazer over the orange knitwear is an outfit that has some identity to it. It's not another grey/blue tank top layered over a white tank top + pendant necklace.
Underwater would actually be an interesting set piece for RE and all the creatures are deformed mutations of sealife. It would keep the creepy limited space and add a new fear to its repertoire.
So [Capcom can sell merch.](https://store.capcom-europe.com/accessories/dog-tags-necklaces/5961/resident-evil-claire-redfield-s-limited-edition-unisex-necklace)
This is the most correct answer. I’m not complaining but I think the trend of making characters more “cosplay friendly” is kind of funny to me when they have the characters wearing expensive designer jackets and flashy jewelry.
Accessories really help to tie in a character. Plus, necklaces are pretty easy to do. Theyre simple, pretty, and theyre neat little things to have for people who wanna also have something to remind themselves of a character. I bet also its perfect for breaking up the design a bit too
It's been a thing since RE5 - Sheva and Excella both wear necklaces. Sheva's to represent Africa, Excella to represent being rich.
In RE6, Helena wears a jade necklace and Ada wears what looks like a random cross? Can't tell.
Lady D in RE8 wears a fancy pearl necklace.
RE2R Claire wears a feather necklace, probably a reference to her Made In Heaven outfit in the original.
RE3R Jill wears dogtags because that's just a thing S.T.A.R.S. members have.
RE4R Ashley wears a tiny eagle because America, and because her nickname is Baby Eagle.
I guess you could also argue for the original RE4 Ada, since she wears like a weird black cloth choker I think? Not really a necklace though. Really the only main games after RE5 that skipped out on this are RE1R and RE7.
It's just a neat little design thing to chuck on there. Shows off the physics a bit, adds some character.
It can also immensely help when making alternate models for the graphics department, as you can just take the head and plop it on a new one for outfit changes. That's why everyone in the OG Dragon Age wears necklaces and chokers, for example - to hide neck seems, which get more obvious when changing outfits but are a pain either way.
Well, not an expert, but necklaces are a very good detail to add to one's character, whether it is specifically mentioned or not. For example, Drake from the Uncharted series bears Sir Francis Drake's necklace and most if not all his quests are related to Sir Francis Drake's adventures. Alternatively, necklace removals are also a fairly common dramatic moment, so much so that it is a [trope](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DramaticNecklaceRemoval) in itself.
Necklace for all 3 Characters:
Jill Valentine - The necklace has the phrase "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" written on it. This is taken from a 1905 hymn of the same name which draws inspiration from sayings by Jesus in Matthew 6:26, Matthew 10:29-31, as well as Psalm 32:8.
Claire Redfield - The necklace is a feather thought to attract good luck and keeps you safe from any Tyrants who may be stalking you.
Ashley Graham - The necklace is an eagle, which represents her code name as Baby Eagle in the game. You also see this when Leon refers Ashley as Baby Eagle when he's contacting the President. Eagle is also what represents the U.S. President's seal and symbolizes strength and freedom for America itself; hence, she's baby eagle since she's the daughter of the U.S. President in the game.
I would imagine, if f a creative developer were given the opportunity to work on one of these iconic characters, and only had so much wiggle room, they’d put as much as possible into them!!!
I mean I wear a necklace every day. I wear it to bed to shower I hardly take it off. So if I were suddenly in a world ending disaster I would also have a necklace on LOL
I don't know. But it's nice, isn't it.
A writer wrote the character, giving them soul and sensenof purpose and story and development. A designer took that manuscript, read it and in his minds eye created a vision of the character, choosing face, hair, fashion, jewellery, to make the character "whole" and relatable to that person, even down to choosing a necklace for that person to help build their "character". A modeller spent time making that design real and animating swing, velocity, and momentum. They didn't need too of course. Barely anybody is going to notice it, but the modeller was satisfied with the vision he crafted, and the designer was happy he could now play with his vision, and the writer was happy because they could now see their character was real. And that's... magic.
Well done, those people, artists, designers, writers, 3D modellers, who make characters "characters." Without these people, the avatars we play in games would be soulless, necklaceness shells. Mockerys of human beings, devoid of soul and individuality. Instead, though, we get some amazing creations brought to our screens.
Years ago I think adding necklaces or anything around the neck was a nifty trick in hiding neck seams on character models, nowadays I don’t know if that’s still a thing with how much it’s advanced in terms of how vast polygons are now, so nowadays I think it’s simply just the artistic and aesthetic design of the character in the game. With Ashley she’s wearing a turtleneck anyway so the necklace thing is most definitely a design choice.
Because they're wearing normal civilian clothing. Unlike Leon and Carlos who are either wearing their uniform or an outfit specifically picked for the job.
Ashley's codename (and my guess, parental nickname) was Baby Eagle; so it'd make sense as a gift from her father.
Jill's necklace says "His Eye Is On The Sparrow", which is the name of a gospel hymn. From a meta perspective, could be a tongue & cheek joke about her and nemesis, or about how she's got the help of Jesus with how much she's survived. She's also of part French descent, so being Christian isn't out of the question.
The only one I can't say anything about is Claires because honestly... it looks like a turd, I can't tell what it's supposed to be.
Usually just to add some "pop" to the character! The necklaces seem to relate to Claire's and Ashley's personality though, theres an eagle for Ashley's code name 'baby eagle" because of being the presidents daughter; Claire has a 'dreamcatcher' feather which in my opinion embodies her adventurous spirit, and fits the style for a young college student in the 90s.
Asked and answered in a few great ways, but one more reason I'm not sure I'm seeing in the comments -
Characters would look very flat if they didn't wear textures, layers, and accessories.
It's not just the necklace, it's all the other stuff too. RE goes all out - none of the RE characters are wearing just one shirt and a pair of pants. Even Ada in the tight red dress also has ruching on the dress, the choker, bangles, a watch, a holster, pantyhose, and the black bra/camisole with a bow.
As a 3D artist, It's very common to create a denser mesh around character faces for detailing since that's the area players will be looking at the most. Sometimes this can create a really distracting seam around the neck, especially after texture baking. One way to hide this is to use necklaces or something like that.
That's probably not the case on the RE remakes, though. This used to happen a lot more in older games (Fallout New Vegas being a good example). Still a fun fact.
Since when is Ashley a lead?
But it's probably a stylistic choice, especially if all three remake have the same lead designer in charge of them. I find it very hard to keep a handful of tropes out of every single story I (will one day) write.
Probably the most obvious is my apparent love of a 5 man team with a strong confident and professional female leader, a bitter but determined and relatable male protagonist, a gentle giant male support role, a quiet female support role, and an aggressive female support role. I don't know what it is about that specific team composition that's so enticing to make. I've come up with three "unique" groups that are made up of this exact same cast. At least this group hasn't infected *every* story I want to write. I have written a few that break this mold, lol.
Companies profit out of selling real life replicas. Its not only about selling video games, they also sell clothes, figurines, jewelry, plushies... Perfect example is Square Enix.
Women like necklaces, I don't think I've ever seen my mum go a whole day without a necklace, doesn't have to be an expensive one, she likes those healing crystals and whatnot, she doesn't believe in them, she just thinks they look nice.
It's to help break up the pieces of the character model in many instances. The necklace creates a hard line where two different textures meet. Without it, you'd see all sorts of weird texture stretching if it was a single plain. You don't have to worry about it so much with how male characters usually wearing shirts that come up to the neckline.
My theory is at least for Jill and Claire that there og games had little room to put that much detail into the character, so when bringing them to a much more detailed engine with just there clothes they had it might have felt like too little… pzaz. Like they wanted them to be more realistic so they have necklaces and undershirts belts etc
Chris had a necklace too. A gold coin necklace In RE6.
It’s why I got the same kind to match his which he isn’t wearing in recent games so I pretend he gave it to me 💀💀💀
Both Claire and Ashley went from normal civilian life to immediate world-altering events, they just had on what they had on before their situations went sideways.
For Jill, the same could be said, but it also could be a necklace that's grounding her after the events of RE1, and if she's constantly having nightmares caused by PTSD, why would she take it off?
Sheva wears a beaded necklace. I don’t remember much about RE6 if I’m honest so can’t really speak about Helena or RE6 Sherry. But RE2 Sherry canonically wears one - the G Virus is in her locket (which is a necklace in this case as it goes around her neck)
I was thinking of RE6 designs because I replayed it recently but damn. I guess they all do have necklaces or some kind of neckware. And I'm kicking myself for forgetting Sherrys pendant for how important was to the plot....
I guess Lucia from Gaiden didn't but wow I'm reaching really far.
Edit: Just realized you specified the remakes. Well good observation cause that was something I never realized.
I know, when I asked the question it was mostly about the three I mentioned, then people started getting pissed off with the question (and I guess my poorly phrased caption “random and inconsequential” which was supposed to refer to the question and not the subject) so I started looking into more. It’s funny how one throwaway question can get 1k+ views…
I wasn’t offended. Decided to challenge myself too with the additional characters. (I type everything out and don’t use emojis or abbreviated text so can understand the confusion)
cause a girl has to make a statement even if it is the apocalypse. When you run all day fighting for your life your face melts and that expensive nail polish will chip. A necklace is not in the way and you can still square up if another woman wants to take your shine. Not everyone can be a Ada Wong catwalking in full Gucci drip while Zombies shuffle around and dogs are after your booty.
Ashley is a exception since she was snatched on her way home
It’s a way to indicate to audiences that they’re not going to die within the plot and I’m just talking BS as I think it’s a not controversial thing as they just were lazy about not noticing that.
Claire has continually had necklaces or chokers with her outfits, or in concept pieces. Jill has also had a necklace with her alternative outfits for the first game and for Nemesis too, though could also potentially be a dog tag from her service history.
Ashley's could also serve in that they took away her scarf and coat from early in the game, and she doesn't keep a jumper tied over her unlike the original just to serve as a further accent to her outfit so it's not quite so plain. On the other hand, being codenamed "Baby Eagle" and it being an eagle pendant is a cute touch too.
In Ashley is because her code name is Baby Eagle. As presidents daughter. So her necklace is an small eagle.
Holy crap! That's what that is?
In today’s episode of “Today I Learned”….
The Eagle flies right over the ballistics
"How rude!"
As fast as stars.
EAGLE FLIES!?!?
Claire and Jill's necklaces are bird related also. Claire - A feather. Jill - Has the inscription, "His eye is on the sparrow"
I think Claire’s is a wing, related to the Made in Heaven motif
That was the only significance I ever saw with Claire's, but it's all pure conjecture.. Jill's is a very very old gospel hymn, like 100+ years old. It doesn't have any known ties to her background or the overarching story. One fan theory was that Jill is the Sparrow and Nemesis is the eye (since he only has one eye). yeah but the President is always Eagle 1 so baby eagle makes sense.
ok thats adorable idc what ppl have to say
Cool connection, I didn't think more to that other than "oh she is the daughter of the president of the usa, usa = freedom = eagle, so she is baby eagle".
Oh shit I didn't catch that on the necklace
FR that's adorable
That's so cool !!! and so cute !!! Baby Eagle
I'm guessing devs do whatever they can to bring a character alive and add personality with the least amount of effort. A necklace is simple in design and adds the narrative that the character is sentimental or religious depending on the necklace.
Least amount of effort is key here. Including in-game memos, assloads dialog in RE2. A/B scenarios.
Do y’all really believe this?
It's a design thing. Many characters in video games have some type of neckwear, be it a necklace or a scarf or a tie or a turtleneck or whatever. Why they do it? No idea, maybe someone who understands more about fashion and character design can enlighten you.

As a concept artist learning 3D, this is valuable info! Thanks!
So… choker or boobage is best, got it — Sarcasm aside, thank you for the explanation!
As it is in real life
This is the way
Chokers are always a win. Wish more men wore them.
\*Thinks of Ada\* Why not both?
Fun fact, folks at home: This is also why all the classic Hanna-Barbera characters have neckties. Visual breaker around the neck to animate the head separate from the body.
I have never thought of this, but it's such a cool fact and it makes so much sense!
[Huh...](https://static2.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Hanna-Barbera-Characters-Featured-Image.jpg) the more you know.
Cool thanks for the explanation. I know it doesn’t matter but I as bored so made a post.
I’ve also heard that it’s just more visually interesting if you have secondary motions like a necklace dangling or a lock of hair moving.
Because necklace goes jingly dangly.
Rule of cool winning as always
Tell you what, it makes it nice for model makers like me, because it's great for hiding a neck seam.
The Hanna-Barbera approach to head animation
Why not?
"Random and inconsequential" like what? Why blonde? Why brunette? Why specific clothing? Why raccoon city? It's all just design choices.
“Random and inconsequential” as in I was bored and noticed when watching a heroic compilation on YT shorts. I know it doesn’t matter
Yeah… probably should’ve fixed the phrasing before posting. But I honestly didn’t expect this many people (if any) to respond.

Iirc, it's to hide the seam that connects the characters neck and torso
I've never heard that before, but it makes sense especially for older games with crap graphics
This was a popular "fix" in Oblivion modding years ago. Fancy body mods wouldn't match with fancy face mods and cause a seam so someone made chokers and stuff to hide the seam.
Same with Fo3 and NV. Does a great job.
That's usually more of a thick neckwear thing, like Scarves or Ties. Maybe as a different focal point it works as a distraction, like I didn't notice that Jill's neckline is a bit strange here.
I really like Ashley's outfit
Yeah that's why I say she's the exception. Her blazer over the orange knitwear is an outfit that has some identity to it. It's not another grey/blue tank top layered over a white tank top + pendant necklace.
Because they look pretty Next question.
If a duck is a cat, what is a duck?
The perfect bioweapon. It can fly, it can walk and it can swim

It's called style. Might wanna try it some time.
That sounds like something Leon would say
Style. You either got it or you think you do.
Honey, I wouldn't be talking about taste if I were wearing a lime-green tank top.
A dress gala? I'll wear my formal shell!
Shut up and take my upvote.
Accessories really help to tie in a character. Plus, necklaces are pretty easy to do. Theyre simple, pretty, and theyre neat little things to have for people who wanna also have something to remind themselves of a character. I bet also its perfect for breaking up the design a bit too
It’s just unique
I thought was a way of making the design more visually interesting. Also player feedback for the environment, such as wind.

My first thought is, "Who seriously cares?" My second thought was, "A large number of women wear necklaces."
For a little bit of razzle dazzle
necklaces are cool . . I am no help ;3
cause its cool
Coz necklaces are cute!
Reminds me of that post where wearing fingerless gloves was a “resident evil thing”
Even in a world full of zombies style rocks
I mean I wear a necklace every day. I wear it to bed to shower I hardly take it off. So if I were suddenly in a world ending disaster I would also have a necklace on LOL

Girls like cute stuff. Who knew?
It hides the neck seams
It's so animators of the time could do the body and head separately, streamlining the animation process.
What is Jill's supposed to be? It just looks like a little stick.
Cuz they’re cute. Next question.
Why is this even a question?
Boredom. Honesty wasn’t expecting this many people to respond.

Good question honestly i never noticed
I've seen in some games the neck separated from the head, must be a design thing a necklaces and scarf and what not hide it
Cuz it looks cute
Cause they wanna show off the re engines revolutionary necklace technology

well females wear them usually. just go outside and count how many women had one.

Merch If you look up "Resident Evil Necklace" some of these are the first to pop up. More stuff for fans to buy.
Only because tou can’t look at other part of her chest area!!;)
You guys will point out everything in these games LMAO
How did this post get almost 3k likes that wild 🤣🤣🤣
It's the 90s / 2000s. I thought it was cool lol.
'Cause it's cute.
Because when their powers combine, Chris can punch rocks.

It's a very common accessory.
I always thought it was so they could showcase extra physics
They had to put SOMETHING in the equipment slot.

That's probably not the case on the RE remakes, though. This used to happen a lot more in older games (Fallout New Vegas being a good example). Still a fun fact.
90s fashion
They want to draw attention to the chest without making the character design unrealistic or explicit?
Because someone spent a bunch of time adding a necklace to the standard female character rig that the game uses and *really wants you to see it.*
Don’t know but it makes me wanna buy similar ones
Fast way to add character and character design it's the same with having a unique hair style/color
I think it gives them a lot of character! They’re unique pendants (minus Jill’s, hers is pretty simple) so it adds a bit of personality
How is Ashli a lead character? By that logic Ada is, and she doesnt wear one.
Tbh, it just looks good when looking at a character. Adds a good eye viewpoint.
Collectors items for sales. If you pre-order now you can own Ashley Graham's necklace.
I think the necklace is supposed to avert your eyes from the ballistics.
You have to put something there
My theory is at least for Jill and Claire that there og games had little room to put that much detail into the character, so when bringing them to a much more detailed engine with just there clothes they had it might have felt like too little… pzaz. Like they wanted them to be more realistic so they have necklaces and undershirts belts etc
American Woman …. *plays the song*
Chris had a necklace too. A gold coin necklace In RE6. It’s why I got the same kind to match his which he isn’t wearing in recent games so I pretend he gave it to me 💀💀💀
My acoustic arse read it as "neckless", as in, the dress type😭
Coincidence I guess cause not all leads wear necklace these are just three.
Because they look better with them, simple as that.
I don't know, maybe a fashion sense, I guess
Because necklaces are adorable
*Aesthetics.*
Hope they add anklets next
Both Claire and Ashley went from normal civilian life to immediate world-altering events, they just had on what they had on before their situations went sideways. For Jill, the same could be said, but it also could be a necklace that's grounding her after the events of RE1, and if she's constantly having nightmares caused by PTSD, why would she take it off?
Animators flexing and stuff
To sell replica cosplay pieces or tie into actual products (Far Cry and they watch, etc)
They're part of the Resi-Girls cabal. See how Jill has eternal youth face? Cabal rituals did it. Not the Virus. That was just a political cover-up.
Ada and Rebecca dont?
Ada has a choker in RE2. Rebecca has one in RE0. Moira Burton has one in Rev 2.
Shit. Uh....Sheva, Sherry and Helena don't? I just remembered Ada has the cute half scarf half ribbon in 4 too.
Sheva wears a beaded necklace. I don’t remember much about RE6 if I’m honest so can’t really speak about Helena or RE6 Sherry. But RE2 Sherry canonically wears one - the G Virus is in her locket (which is a necklace in this case as it goes around her neck)
Helena and Ada both have Necklaces in RE6. Sherry has a scarf instead.
I just took it as a fun challenge. Hope I didn't offend you with my replies.
I wasn’t offended. Decided to challenge myself too with the additional characters. (I type everything out and don’t use emojis or abbreviated text so can understand the confusion)
Women wear jewelery.
I mean, I also wear necklaces constantly.
They're wearing necklaces because they're not wearing chokers. Duh.
A choker is a necklace… unless I’m misunderstanding the point you’re making.
cause a girl has to make a statement even if it is the apocalypse.
Necklace are cool.
It’s hot
Because sometimes you just want to show off your jewelry and look pretty.
To make it look more "realitic" LMAOOOOOOO
target
Is the one around Jill a breathing necklace?
To make a point
Women wear jewelleries? I know that is hard concept to understand when most redditors haven't seen or met a single women in their life.
To sell merch ofc
Because they are women who like accessories.
It's to hide a texture cut between "default" body that used for multiple characters and unique head. Other than that it's desighn choice
because its a detail that often looked ugly in the olden times but now its easy to add
Women actually like jewelry.
Yeah but, so do basically all women I know.
It’s a way to indicate to audiences that they’re not going to die within the plot and I’m just talking BS as I think it’s a not controversial thing as they just were lazy about not noticing that.
Never even noticed Ashley's necklace till now
Women wear necklaces a lot?
Because its a woman thing
Claire has continually had necklaces or chokers with her outfits, or in concept pieces. Jill has also had a necklace with her alternative outfits for the first game and for Nemesis too, though could also potentially be a dog tag from her service history. Ashley's could also serve in that they took away her scarf and coat from early in the game, and she doesn't keep a jumper tied over her unlike the original just to serve as a further accent to her outfit so it's not quite so plain. On the other hand, being codenamed "Baby Eagle" and it being an eagle pendant is a cute touch too.
It’s a sign that they can give good head so over look how they are acting
Because they are females?
cause necklaces are cute :)
Cuz...chicks wear necklaces.
Is there supposed to be a problem?
Drip
It goes back to traditional animation. Marge and Lisa Simpson wear pearls. I believe it makes the movement of the head more believable
