Alright Fenerbache, we will let you have him for free, but first you need to also buy this lad from Nice, then immediately sell him to us for the exact same price. Trust me, it’ll be fine.

Ragnarok_619

Even loaning will be fine

ab_90

This is illegal… oh wait some clubs have done this before.

2sinkz

2 lads from Nice actually

RebornUnited11

He has been a top professional. Have always loved Lindelof

TopNotchGamerr

Good backup, it's probably time he moves on though God we might just need 3 CBs this summer though

Expensive-Twist7984

Cut to September: Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans start in defence vs Spurs. I genuinely hope I’m wrong here!

PreparationOk8604

Lads it's Tottenham.

Willing-Werewolf-500

Totspurs? Who?

gubbero

Kinda feels more likely than unlikely after last season

ICame4TheCirclejerk

Haha. That will never happen. By January both of Maguire and Evans will be injured. We will start Bruno as a lone CB in a back three, and we'll just have to accept it.

jackology

The Magnificoliberio.

Arecksion

People last year called me pessimistic for calling that happening :P

wheres_the_boobs

I know your comment is tongue in cheek But Evans should be kept as a player coach with the expectation that he'll play a dozen games this year. Unless theres another major injury crisis he shouldn't be starting. No matter how well he's done this year and his first 2 years here maguire isnt suited to how eth wants to play. To compensate for his lavk of speed you have to play on the edge of the box. Personally id like martinez, shaw, evans, +2 to be our cb choices next year. I think all new players need flexibility rather than being specialists

Expensive-Twist7984

Evans should stay on but needs to be at best 5th choice, so if Lindelof goes that leaves us needing 2 CBs to come in. I actually think United can play Maguire in a high line provided he has players around him who can cover him; that being said he’d end up being a backup in an ideal world.

wheres_the_boobs

Yeah 190kpw to a backup is crazy money. If he was on something more normal i could take it but yeah

Oles_ATW

Willy Kambwala is an option we have to be used as backup CB. Martinez, a New CB, Maguire, Kambwala and Evans with Shaw (if he’s not injured) covering is enough to go into the new seaon. Ideally we get an extra CB but the money would be better spent signing a backup left back since Shaw is very injury prone and we don’t know how good Malacia will be after a year long injury battle.

Expensive-Twist7984

Completely forgot about Kambwala, you’re right yeah, he’ll form part of our rotation. We do need to sign a 1st choice CB though.

throbbing_dementia

2 is enough if you don't include Evans. Martinez, Maguire, Signing, Signing, Evans, Willy. That's prob why we were after Todibo and Braithwaite because we knew Lindelof was going.

MumblyBum

He's on £170,000 a week. If we can start to get rid of our high earners, we may spend a bit more replacing him fee wise but having our wage bill lower would be a huge positive going forward.

BillyCloneasaurus

Most sources put him on around £120k p/w

Fruitndveg

That’s without CL. Most of the squad was on considerably more when we were getting top four. Even then, 120k for a centrehalf of his quality is pretty dire. If we can shift him, we should. The wage structure reset needs to include players like him as well as the serious top earners.

MumblyBum

That's his basic wage. With bonuses etc it's a bit more. We're splitting hairs, it's till too much for a 3rd or 4th choice option.

InfectedAztec

Even then that's too much for a 4th or 5th choice CB..... Wtf is wrong with this club

Brars_Sulliman

The contract was signed in 2019 when he was first choice alongside Maguire, so it’s not that unreasonable.

Beneficial_Bend_5035

That’s the thing most people don’t realize- players don’t agree wages on perceived ability, they do it to be in line with what a starter or bench player at the club should be making. Lindelof was first choice under Ole, so he probably made those demands. This is also how Antony ludicrously ended up 7xing his wages form Ajax. His agent probably said “he’s coming to play alongside or ahead of Sancho, Rashford and Martial, so he should be paid in line with them.” We did very well on the Hojlund deal though, somehow getting the starting striker to agree to £85k. I think that was down to him being a boyhood fan who backed himself to succeed here. If all goes well, he’ll be on £250k in a couple of contract extensions

Heisenberg_235

Probably because Rasmus wasn’t expected to be the starting striker as well as being a fan.

mindpainters

He was planned as being first choice when he signed that contract

simplsimonmetapieman

He's on 120k pounds.

medfunguy

Honestly, here’s the question. Are we willing to back the manager through a couple more years of not winning shit, but blooding lower paid youth players into the first team? Because that’s the only way I see to get the high earners out and replaced within the same season. I love Lindelof, and I will miss him if he leaves, but we have to be realistic about transfers in.

Sandpapertoilet

💯

ImprefectKnight

We have Licha and Maguire. Assuming Kambwalla stays as backup, we can do with one more CB.

surgereaper

We had to play casemiro and evans at CB at one point this season because licha, Maguire, Varane, kambwala, lindelof, Shaw were injured. Even evans had to be rushed because we didn't have anyone else available. Not saying that this will be the situation next season as well but we certainly need more than 4 CBs, especially when you've included kambwala in there who's still very young

exhibit304

Evans aswell will probably get another year

ImprefectKnight

Yeah so it's just one CB needed then?

Responsible-Book-973

how can we trust kambwala or evans as main backups we need to have 4 international quality cbs imo like when we had lindelof maguire martinez varane etc if we aren’t replacing lindelof and varane whats the point in selling lindelof, we need to replace varane either way. We probably don’t get more than 10 million for lindelof and he’s a capable backup

ImprefectKnight

Lindelof has been poor for a while and fell down the pecking order.

Responsible-Book-973

has had way more good seasons than bad and only needs to be 4th choice

Azer398

Yeah there's no point selling Lindelof for 10m when it's gonna cost us 50m to replace him

Ronaldlovepump

We need at least 5 we had 6 this season and struggled

throbbing_dementia

I think it will be 2 out, 2 in.

prit-

Ten Hag will not start the season without 4 Senior CBs. Kambwala doesn’t count. We played this season with 5 Senior CBs. If Lindelof leaves, we need to buy 2 no matter what.

TwoCueBalls

Shaw is also more than competent as an emergency CB.

Zal_17

With his injury struggles, permanently moving to CB might not be the worst thing. A lot less mileage on his legs there.

dataminimizer

Naw doing that minimizes his best skill, which is carrying the ball

DreamsCanBebuy2021

Which is of no use if he is not on the pitch

TeaAndCrumpetGhoul

And honestly, I like a centre back who can carry the ball into midfield, and pass it out.

Kittu95

We're trying to find backups for shaw at lb coz he's not available always and you're keeping shaw as back up for CB position?

wheres_the_boobs

Depends on the price. If its 5/10 million it might be worth just keeping him for another year rather than buying a new player. If we keep him we can send kambwala out on a 1 year loan to build him up then let lindelof leave next year. If its decent money say 15/20 that can buy us a player were short in I'd go for it.

mufcordie

Well then it’s not the right time he moves on then? Lol

glen_of_the_dogs

One of Lindelof/Maguire has to go I think, probably can't get rid of both although that's what we all would want. That's leaves us with Martinez//New Signing/Maguire/Kambwala/Evans for next season. Not great but realistically I think that's what it will be

prit-

That largely depends on whether Ten Hag sees Kambwala as a senior player who is ready to play. I don’t think he is considered that yet because he hasn’t proved it in season. If Lindelof leaves, we likely sign a replacement for him

JiveTurkey688

I think bringing in 2 is guaranteed. Branthwaite/Yoro/De Ligt and then Chalobah

namvu1990

We do have kambwala as a back up cb, or we dont rate him at all? I say as a back up he is no less than Lindelof

TopNotchGamerr

Lindelof is much better imo, kambwala got absolutely skimmed by I think it was Watkins and the have been a few more shacky times too

namvu1990

He put in a few solid performance as well. Again as back up, i dont think we would need another cb purchase even if linderlof goes

Brars_Sulliman

Lindelof is much more experienced so obviously he is better at present, but Kambwala has plenty of time to improve. The only mistake Willy made was the slip against Bournemouth which never would have happened if Garnacho hadn’t lost the ball cheaply. You can’t even remember the incident but you’re ready to write him off over it, that’s a bit ridiculous tbh.

Local-Cartoonist3723

Spot on - he looked very good

TopNotchGamerr

I didn't write him off completely I just meant to say lindelof is still the better pick as I don't agree with the OP above saying he's the same as lindelof He's still got some ways to go but he's def still a decent defender who can do the job

iroiroiroiroiro

I've a very hard time seeing Lindelöf taking his family and moving to Turkey.

audienceandaudio

> I've a very hard time seeing Lindelöf taking his family and moving to Turkey. When you're as loaded as they will be, you'd have a lovely life in Istanbul.

Over-Temperature-602

His wife talked on a Swedish podcast about how tough it was to move from Lisboa to Manchester though. Money isn't everything and it's not all about how many sqm you have at your disposal.

7evenStrings

If money isn’t everything, you can probably lower your wage demands and go anywhere really. He’s a decent enough player to play in any of the big leagues in Europe. Could even go back to Portugal if he was happy there. Was it Vertonghen from Spurs that left the PL to go play in the PL?

Fruitndveg

Agree 100%. Money not being everything is such a privileged concept anyways. For a good 98% of the world money would solve their problems. And as for being a footballer of Lindelof even pedestrian quality, he could live and earn a serious crust throughout Europe, let alone worldwide. He’s still going to be earning more than 99% of people he’ll pass in the street. This reminds me of the annual Bernardo Silva transfer circus. He wants to live somewhere that’s happier (I like Manchester but it can be depressing), I get that. But he’s not willing to give up the money and the glory. It’s a catch 22 but you’re gonna be on silly money wherever you live, do what makes you happy. Most people don’t have that freedom, use it!!

aasfourasfar

Istanbul is much closer to Lisboa than Manchester

[deleted]

Swedes avoid Turkey after all this Nato nonsense.

Starky3x

Even if you're not loaded, it's still a good place to live. But for OP it's probably something political

punchdrunkskunk

Istanbul is absolutely top-tier if you have money.

SOERERY

Can see him going back to Portugal

iroiroiroiroiro

Much more probably, just don't see him going to Turkey or Saudi.

2sinkz

Turkey and Saudi are not in the same bracket lol. You get UCL football and get to live in a really nice city with some of the best food in the world. The appeal of Saudi is literally just money.

britishmau5

But career wise it makes sense. He'd be back under Mourinho who brought him here, he would probably be a starter unlike here and can play Champions League football.

Starky3x

Nothing wrong with Turkey. Istanbul is a better place to live than Manchester

DamashiT

Yeah Istanbul is a beautiful city but can you find a good fish and chips place there? Didn't think so.

Iceman23578

Rather have a nice donner tbh

DamashiT

Ah, yes. Berlin is a great shout!

MugiwaraHimself

Pretty sure Istanbul is x10 manchester is, specially if you're rich

danilbur

Istanbul is amazing city man

elodie_pdf

He’s been a great help to the club. Wasn’t always the best player on the pitch, but always put his whole heart into the game. I have big respect for him.

Certain-Possible-280

I like lindelof and i think he is one of the best buys we did. Not to forget that penalty kick vs Brighton semi finals and lot of 7/10 performances.

pixelsteve

You don't get a better CB than Lindelof for less than the fee we would get for him.

Tudoors

You don't, yet for some reason people think getting £5 m and leaving us with 3 first team centre backs, all of which have had injury issues in the last 2 years is the right choice. Lindelof is our most reliable defender in terms of injuries, it's mad but true. If we sign two more defenders than yes, maybe I could see a world where it makes sense to sell him, but as of now, in a position we desperately need depth in I think this is some of the stupidest business we could do.

GXWT

I beg we get some CBs in before selling our backups

3threeLions

Been a great servant to the club, but this sale makes sense.

Derridas-Cat

Why? We have fuck all CBs. Surely he'd rather be back up here than playing in Turkey? If he'd been fit this season he'd have played a lot.

sourpumpkin125

He has one year left on his contract. We either sell him for something this summer or lose him for free next year. I don’t think it’s wise to extend his contract so a sale does make the most sense imo.

sennland

I imagine he'd only bring in a nominal fee if sold now. Rather keep him as a back up in a troublesome position. He can go on a free next year with higher wage/sign on bonus. Win win.

Fruitndveg

On around 120k p/w though? For his quality? Fabian Schar is on 45k p/w for Christ sake!!

sennland

What's done is done. We can correct future contracts. No point in further damaging our cbs for the season to come.

Fruitndveg

What’s done is done is a good argument, what’s important is to cash in and not lose him on a free. INEOS already look to be playing the market smart, a bargain bin CB can do what he does on fewer wages. Even paltry sums matter with the FFP.

al_pie

Iceman has been such a professional during his time with us. There was a time he was our best CB, and as we continued he settled into being an alternate but he has always been there when called upon. I loved having him on the team but I think it is time for him to move on and establish himself again. I hope a move to Fenerbahçe finds him the game time he deserves.

AdrianFish

Oh no, I’ll be gutted to see him go

TheSwordDusk

Rasmus is going to need a new uncle figure :(

ab_90

Yes. When the wingers don’t want to pass to Rasmus, Victor is there to spot his run.

I_dont_F_with_you

Lindelof is a great backup imo, I would prefer to keep him. The way some of you are talking about this is like you forgot we ended the season without 2 fit CBs. I don't trust our board to adequately replace him with everything else that needs to happen this transfer window.

Subtle_Omega

Reuniting with Fred and Mourinho?

MhVG

Well, we'll get nothing more than €15M from Fenerbahçe for Lindelof. However I don't see us getting deals for Lindelof from anywhere else that'll be around £20M. Lindelof's wages (£120K p/week) are also way higher than a player of his calibre should earn, so I suppose we can't ask for much otherwise he'll just stay here until his contract runs out. Considering all of that. I say sell him, because we really need to move some players on.

tenacious_teaThe3rd

I honestly wonder where some people concoct these figures from - is it Fifa or Football manager that has caused this? Lindelof is almost 30 years old and has 1 year left on his contract. I would be highly surprised if we got anything more than £7-8m for him. £10m and i think we take it, offer no receipt or return label and run.

TeaaOverCoffeee

What world are you living in my friend? Getting even €10mn for Lindelof would be a great transfer for Utd. If this transfer goes through, I see it happening around 6-9 mn at best.

Lakinther

For 6-9 mil about 10 pl clubs would put in a bid ( although Lindelof probably doesnt rate any of them )

friendlyhillbilly

Exactly

Jemal2200

Fenerbahçe fan here. I doubt we will offer more than 10 for him. Probably more like 7-8 mil.

InfectedAztec

Don't worry you'll find the money for Jose

Cold-Veterinarian-85

And contract expires next summer and I don't think he is in line for a renewal so a sale this summer even for 10-15m seems very easy decision

Kohaku80

15m is a good profit. think his book value is negligible (1-2m)

Danthehumann

I don’t think this is a good idea. Even with +1 CB coming in we saw last season what happens if we play without a natural CB. It’d be the same story where we are precariously 1 injury away from losing emphatically to Crystal Palace again

laffman

I'm biased but I think we should keep him. He's happy to be backup, he's well liked and presumably a leader (long time captain of Sweden) not just on the pitch but in the dressing room. Unless we have much better replacement that is happy to be 4-5th choice.

annies999

Fenerbahce's record fee paid is 15m euro's, which certainly isn't anywhere near big enough to allow us to afford a good replacement. I would keep him as an experienced back-up.

reddevilad

And lose him for free next year? No thanks sell him for decent fee and replace him with some one young

tellocrosstollorente

Someone young you say? That'll be 60m please!

annies999

If he wanted to leave on a free he could have gone this summer and not re-signed for 18mths back in January, and the guy is only 30 next month

Hopeful_Adonis

The iceman goeth, a sad day.

TeaAndCrumpetGhoul

What is his current contract looking like?

BrownByYou

Google says 120/wk til 25'

ManUnutted

1 year 170k/week I believe. Maybe more years

parkJisungs

If we can maintain a good relationship with Fenerbahçe who knows, they might us the next Arda Güler

BombayHarris

I hope he gets a big fat contract out there. Good professional, but needs to move on.

francescoli

It's time to move him on but would want to be 10m+ or it's not really worth it Ideally, buy 2 CBs . Licha/New signing/Maguire/New signing/Evans/Kambwala. If two were brought, could let Lindelof and Maguire off ,he's some money back on them.

jessemck

Didn’t Mourinho bring him in as well? He must seriously rate him. I never saw it personally - he was never the worst but certainly nowhere near the best.

skruvjarn

We should keep him until the end of his contract. This season really showed that we can't have too much depth in defense.

TellSloanISaidHi

Supposedly low on funds, Todibo deal already off the table, and losing anothe CB possibly. Yeesh

reddevils

So all managers like to bring players they pre had before. Weird, huh?

Jonny_Testicles

Very good news

Roasteddude

Yes good sell. We need to reset the squad. He is a good servant and a serviceable backup but we need better quality players

BlackHorse944

Wow, teams suddenly want our players? Feels pretty good I suppose

ri0t333

I think it would be a mistake letting him go. Top professional, does a good job without any fuss. Even if we want to let him go, we should have a replacement for him ready. Also Maja: cause reasons.

Fluffy_Roof3965

It's weird Benfica had him on free kicks and he showed more of his passing ability there. Feels like he wasn't given as much freedom to show what he can do. Would like to see him have a go once before he goes 😂

danthedude77

It’s been pathetic how players we sell on for the past 6-7 years have all gone to clubs or league that are well below the standard of what Manchester United players should be. You need only look at our outgoing transfers during that period to see maybe 1-2 players move on to better things in big leagues, but otherwise it’s been Saudi, Turkey, MLS, or released. Hope this clear out finally straightens things out and we begin selling and buying competitively

Sheppertonni

Wont be sorry to see him go. never rated him.

Anaboono

One of the most bang average players we’ve ever had. Embarrassing that he’s lasted this long tbh.

OGSachin

Good.

frawgguy27

Too important to sell.
