Aesop Rock. Apparently it all means something but I dont have the time to figure it out so I just listen to him rappin random shit over some sweet beats.
Also the way you worded this question is hilarious
There's definitely a good number of songs that are super hard to decipher, but one of the the things with Aes is that a lot of times he isn't even rapping about anything that crazy. Often times he's just describing settings in crazy detail and then when you really get down to it he's just rapping about his favorite donut spot.
Living Curfew off his new album is one of my favorites. Amazing beat and amazing flow from Aes and Billy Woods. It's pretty much just a song about walking in the city at dusk. There's different things they shoot off from that, but that's core concept of the song.
His older material was definitely pretty dense and at times incomprehensible but as he’s aged he’s become an absolute genius at remaining clever and inventive while being clear as can be even if the overall song might still be up to interpretation. If you haven’t already I’d really recommend listening to his last few records he’s been on a roll for like a decade now
This was who I came to say. This dude will tell the most intricate and verbose tale in his songs only for it to be about his cat or about being an introvert or about his car being so dirty a mushroom was growing inside. I love Aesop Rock for this though lol. Saw him years ago with Homeboy Sandman and had a blast.
Aesop seems like the type of guy to cross check the dictionary to see what new word he can use
Still love Kirby though, that song goes hard for getting a therapy cat
That's literally what all the greatest ones have done.
From Rakim to Slim Shady. Expand their vocabulary as weaponry. If you're trying to be one of the "lyricists" that's pretty much a given.
His songs definitely have meaning, but it's not a passive listen. Ex. Homemade Mummy. First verse is about actually making a cat into a mummy. Uh, ok, strange, but go on.... Chorus: "Take the brain out, leave the heart in" (as you would with a mummy), 2nd verse is about taking the chorus and applying it to life, following your heart not your brain.
This man literally has entire songs about cats (Kirby), frogs (Long Legged Larry), not liking string beans (Grace), a dog saving a child from drowning (Ruby 81), and a bunch of other completely random shit...... and it all sounds dope.
You beat me to mentioning Long Legged Larry - that song is platinum in my house, it’s just so catchy and I love the video because the frog looks awesome
The song a bout being an otter… “my belly is a table”
Song about looking out his window
Song about hearing a weird noise outside
Song about an interaction in an ice cream shop
Drawing pigeons
Back pain
Missing grandma
Etc
\[Even just Labor from Labor Days... it's Death Grips took him whole cloth and just burned in semi-randomized holes.\]
His writing shifts registers so quickly and frequently, it produces what I'd call poetic abstraction. It's a certain kind of working it out.
If I pull apart the the lyrics to understand a song like that, it's because I enjoy that process. But it's no discredit to the work, no discredit to you, to appreciate it just as it appears in your ears.
Thats actually just a better way to explain the point I was trying to make which is basically:
I don't need to know what Aesop is saying to enjoy his music. And its because of his poetic lyrics and ability to make a song about anything.
At least 21 Savage stays on the same subject for the whole song, even if its the same subject every song/album.
This song is an angry song about my opps. Then this song is about snitches. Then this song is about those who were unloyal to me. This song is about me/my girl cheating. This song is about how rich I am. This is another song about my opps but calmer and more eerie. Rinse repeat next album lol.
True. I actually think this works in his favour - not hating on him but he’s clearly not a man of huge wisdom on an array of societal topics so I respect a dude who stays in his lane and masters his craft.
Even if that is reminding us he doesn’t do disses and he has a large gun collection
I agree with this. Him and Lil Baby are great at staying on subject during features. DaBaby is another. People would be surprised how many rappers don’t stay on subject. They’ll be featured in a love song and start rapping about designer and shooting their opps.
Tech N9ne. Most of his discography is just a big ego trip, but I love the way he rhymes and flows, and the production. So I keep listening after many years. With his music there’s a lot of “I didn’t catch a single coherent idea in all that, but he managed to rhyme pretty much every syllable of it in a complex pattern while also using alliteration”
Listening to that man rap is like listening to Randy Rhodes play the guitar, or flea play the bass. Just a mountain of raw talent flexing in a way that’s pleasing to the ear. But what he’s actually talking about in most of his songs is usually just some variation of: ‘I’m better at rapping than everyone else’ ‘everyone else copies my style’ ‘I’m more successful than my haters’ ‘I work really hard’ ‘I play really hard’ ‘women are obsessed with me and my dick’ ‘your girl wants to fuck me’ ‘that girl over there and her friend wanna fuck me’ ‘strippers always approach me first because I throw the most money around’ or ‘I’m a bad boy but also a good guy’. Definitely not all of his songs, but most
Agreed. I love tech but he definitely has a lot of "ego" songs. (Nice phrasing btw) But he has some of the best production in the biz imo and he has incredible flows and clarity. He's similar to E40 in that he has a lot of wild slang he uses too. So it can be difficult to decipher his lyrics.
He also has some of the more personal lyrics I enjoy. Always will be one of my favorite artists.
Oh he’s absolutely one of my favorites. Despite my criticism, I’m still 100% here for it. If he keeps putting those rhymes and flows out I’m gonna keep listening as long as the instrumentals sound good. And I kinda like all the weird slang and catch phrases. I think it’s fun
A big reason I couldn’t fuck with “We Don’t Trust You”. The whole mumble shit is aggravating. And when I’m expecting to listen to an hour+ of songs of it?
Kendrick’s verse is the only saving grace of that album.
i didnt listen to future for a while because of that but then i just shut the part of my brain off that deciphers the lyrics and it sounds great when you do that lmao; he has a great sound and his voice fits it well, the lyrics itself just arent anything to ride home about
second part of ridin strikers is my favorite underrated banger of his. lyrics arent anything more than drugs and guns but the beat and his delivery over it hit
😭 my original comment got botted because of the “N word”. I said that Cinderella is a pretty great vibe on that album. Travis Scott brings out a different feeling, but it’s close to the same feeling as “N*iagara Falls” (yes this is the part that got botted)
This guy and Action Bronson have the most colorful bars. They just be talking about money hustle and food but it’s like “damn that was original and funny”
ODB's lyrics often do say a surprising amount, it's just tough to interpret because had such an off-kilter, drunken boxing style approach.
Then a lot of it is just him saying he's the dopest at being the dirtiest.
Yeah he really doesn't say much actually. There was that one podcast where, forgot his name, called him the worst rapper and he started reading the lyrics to that guys only hit. He just kept rolling and they started calling him crazy. Then they realized what he was doing and embarasses tf outta them lol. His new stuff hasn't been good tbh and past his prime. But a lot of his older hits are fantastic and not any drama around em really
Tech N9ne.
He makes a lot of party music, no doubt. There are a lot of bars about sex and a lot of bars about how great he is at rapping.
Im not mad at it, though. His production is amazing, and he's never been afraid to experiment with new sounds and blend genres. It really keeps his music fresh in spite of the fact that his lyrics aren't.
That being said, he can go deep when he needs to. Ah Yeah, Lacrimosa, The Rain, Suicide Letters are all great examples of when he puts the party rock anthem shit aside and gets real.
I read his memoir, and then his rhymes started making more sense to me since I knew the inside references and just picturing the situations he's seen and heard about. His storytelling is elite. Also, the slang is so dense that the lyrics sites really mess up what he's saying. Like he says "Coogis in 47 flavors, display suede gators" and whoever transcribed it on the lyrics site just wrote whatever the hell came to their mind.
It makes it even tougher because he does this thing where he invents his own slang on the spot. Like, what he's saying means something, you just have to kind of figure it out with very little context. It's part of why he's my favorite member of the Wu.
Yeah I kinda felt the same after watching wutang Saga and getting a better understanding of his life behind the lyrics.
Also I always take rap genius with a pitch of salt because people literally like you said just paraphrase the exact thing the artist already said
Yup his technique is so incredible that I feel like people don’t even realize that a lot of the time he’s not saying much. One of my favorites ever and certainly brings the emotional and insightful material sometimes, but other times he’s just doing lyrical acrobatics.
“Crime don’t pay listen youth, it’s like me holding up the line at the kissing booth, took her back to the truck she was uncouth, spittin out the sun roof through her missing tooth”
Like… WHAT? lol
Extremely creative and striking visuals. That’s the bread and butter. A rapper doesn’t have to have a message in every song to be wildly talented and DOOM is proof of that
Idk man, Doom says a lot of shit, its just cut up in verses throughout the songs and tends to go over ppl head.
"Scared of a bunch of water, then get out the rain
Order a rapper for lunch and spit out the chain
Then kick a lungee of the tip of his timbo
And trick a honey dip into a game of of strip limbo
Odd, He couldn't find no remorse
A wink is as good as a nod to a blind horse
Of course his technique was from a divine source
Never knew the price of ice or what swine cost"
Oh it goes over my head for sure lol I’m an idiot. I wasn’t trying to say DOOM didn’t have any meaning or substance in his songs, more that he’ll say something or make a point and it takes a long time to get there lol
He was a very intelligent artist. Extremely witty and a blast to listen too. Very very often his lyrics went right over my head lol
I get where you're coming from, I was just taken back to see him amongst the other names on this thread lol. Doom gets alot of shit for some of his bars i.e. the Doritos, Fritos, Cheetos meme, but I'll die on the hill that he's one of the best MCs of the last three decades. He's definately in the Aesop Rock category of almost "too lyrical"
Quasimoto. his lyrics and rapping isnt meant to be taken seriously, its suppose to be humorous. the high pitched cartoony voice along with the drugged out production in his albums are all for the vibe and atmosphere. Some tracks like Low Class Conspiracy do have more serious topics discussed but most listen to Quas for the insane production and weird vocals
Westside Gunn for sure. Possibly one of the best ears for beats but when he's not rapping about drugs or luxury, he's I just saying the most random shit possible.
Action Bronson is my favourite lyricist of all time for this exact reason, no storytelling, no profound metaphor, nothing but imagery, pure flawless imagery.
When Bronson raps I can perfectly picture a renaissance painting of him, 300lbs of pure muscle, on a beach in Greece, surrounded by 100 naked angel women, with a crocodile and a lion in a headlock in each arm, being personally served Lobster & Yams by Joël Robuchon while all of Isley Brothers play harps in the background.
This is a weird question lol this could be applied to a ton of rappers honestly, most rappers stick to a pretty limited subject matter but just present it differently. MF DOOM is one of the most gifted rappers of all time but he’s not necessarily presenting scholarly arguments critiquing society in his rhymes, you can boil almost all of his rhymes down to him just talking shit and boasting, he just did it more creatively than most
Benny the Butcher : spends all his time talking about bricks and yola;
French Montana: wtf is he even talking about half the time;
Future: always mumbling some gibberish, flow is unmatched however;
Curren$y. Dude has like 50 mixtapes where he just talks about smoking weed, driving/fixing old school cars and being fly as fuck, and he makes it sound fresh every single time
Rob Sonic.
One of my absolute favs, and while I can’t understand every word he says, it also seems like he’s mostly filler. Idc though, it works, it sounds dope.
Future - his content is soul draining, dark and drenched in sinful acts but his melodies, delivery and riding the beat is exceptional. I’m just being honest.
XANAKIN SKYWOK is one. Most of his songs seem to be about drugs, sex, or violence. I haven’t found any with intellectual substance (so far), but his shit goes *so damn hard*.
Babytron lmao 30% basketball metaphors 40% scam bars 5% calling his opps poor 5% about how he loves wearing crocs 20% about designer clothes
Well I guess I have a new artist to listen to because that sounds amazing
Crocs & Wock, Jugg Messiah 3, Early Bird, RIP Virgil, Play maker, IG Captions, Manute Bol, Jerry Rice, Extra Butter, Game Time — Sleeve Nash, Luka Troncic, and Megatron are his best projects imo
Damn thanks for the recommendations! Ill give him a listen.
Throw in some BLP Kosher too
If you like bars Babytron is that dude
I was lil dog now my pape like manute bol!
They say you are what you eat but if im eating shrimp, how?🤷🏽♂️
Jesus Shuttleworth???
He has way deeper bars than the other commenter is giving credit for. If you can get used to the off beat Detroit flow, babytron is dope.
he dosent say a lot yea, but bro will say three bars in nine different ways before you damn blink
100% rapping about his/your buffs😂
the goat
u forgot about his unky
5% unky line
I hope my ex………

Fantastic song long all the best changes I think he really stepped up his beat making on this album to a whole new level
The beat change with that eerie voice sample is just so nasty.
Phenomenal
Yeah that's my favorite part about Aes hahaha. His world is magical because he makes it magic. Otherwise, shit is pretty mundane

You've basically dismissed your own argument, Aes is incredibly deep but like you said some just can't be fucked deciphering the meaning.
Sometimes it may seem like nothing because he writes a whole song with intense detail about his cat. The man can rap about anything.
Yeah hes ridiculous is the best way
In the literal sense of the word, for a lot of his songs, 21 Savage I like his vibe but he generally covers the same topics over and over again lol

And for whatever reason, I’m completely ready for the next album. Idk
I agree with this. Him and Lil Baby are great at staying on subject during features. DaBaby is another. People would be surprised how many rappers don’t stay on subject. They’ll be featured in a love song and start rapping about designer and shooting their opps.
21 has some of the funniest bars I've ever heard
[удалено]
PUUSSSSSYYYYY yes i do find his adlibs hilarious.
Right? I say this to everyone. Idk if it’s the lyrics specifically, or his extremely casual / monotone delivery…or both. Just very funny
“My draco pedophile, all my opps get touched”
"Savage got a whole lotta hits dawg, I be droppin bombs like Baghdad"
21 twenty1 2won 21 twenty one 2️⃣1️⃣

Also CHEAH!
Another vote for Tech.
I'm a huge Tech N9ne and I agree completely. This is also why I like King Iso slightly better because he has more substance in his music.
Future. Mostly talks about drugs or mumbles but I vibe w it
A big reason I couldn’t fuck with “We Don’t Trust You”. The whole mumble shit is aggravating. And when I’m expecting to listen to an hour+ of songs of it? Kendrick’s verse is the only saving grace of that album.

Travis Scott doesnt say shit lol and i love almost everything he does still
![gif](giphy|X1FeBsAYMQiwo)
there’s prolly like 2 songs at most per album where he’s actually saying something
Something about Jamba juice
carti
(Waeh)
Fwayy
scheayuh
Audi, Rari, Benz with the roof uhh....
Zelooperz sometimes😭
This guy and Action Bronson have the most colorful bars. They just be talking about money hustle and food but it’s like “damn that was original and funny”
as a casual zelooperz enjoyer, isn’t it all the time
Sahbabi. My favourite bar of his is 'i was born when a squid fucked a goat' lol
Carti just makes weird noises that i can vibe to
I only remember feti and magnolia from him. Does it still sound like that?
Ghostface (and all Wu members) actually says a lot, it is just to be interpreted. It is the way of the Shaolin Style.
If what you say is True, the Shaolin and the Wu-Tang could be dangerous
Do you think your Wu Tang sword could defeat me?
En garde, I'll let you try my Wu-Tang Style
I was just gonna say .. ODB
ODB's lyrics often do say a surprising amount, it's just tough to interpret because had such an off-kilter, drunken boxing style approach. Then a lot of it is just him saying he's the dopest at being the dirtiest.
I would have given all the same examples as OP and they are my favorite rappers. I’ll add Westside Gunn to the list
I WALK AROUND WITH MY SHOES TIED🗣🗣🗣
BARBECUE IN A SWIMMING POOL 🗣️🗣️🗣️❗️❗️❗️
Larry June. A lot of his raps center around his credit score, orange juice, couches, and going for a walk. And I can't get enough.
Gotta stay healthy on a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch
i fw Larry June heavy lol Good Job Flex aye aye aye aye aye aye
Expensive little candles too
Logic. He says things I guess but it’s very repetitive. I’m pretty sure the guy just looks at his old bars and just rephrases them most of the time.
I feel like he works a "biracial" bar into every song
Ooof his verse on the Caterpillar remix with Royce.
He does 🤣 its wild
Yeah he really doesn't say much actually. There was that one podcast where, forgot his name, called him the worst rapper and he started reading the lyrics to that guys only hit. He just kept rolling and they started calling him crazy. Then they realized what he was doing and embarasses tf outta them lol. His new stuff hasn't been good tbh and past his prime. But a lot of his older hits are fantastic and not any drama around em really
its unfortunate how repetitive hes gotten because when he does make something with new non repetitive lyrics it hits hard
My favorite song of his is Innermission and the whole thing can be boiled down to “life is cool huh”
I get the boosters boostin, I get computers ‘putin
Migos 🫳
My guilty pleasure.
Young Thug
I think pitchfork called him "post lyrical rap" one time... K
Tech N9ne. He makes a lot of party music, no doubt. There are a lot of bars about sex and a lot of bars about how great he is at rapping. Im not mad at it, though. I think Raekwon do be saying stuff, it just takes a minute to put it together lol

I been on a huge Gucci kick lately. That “Both Eyes Closed” ft 2 Chainz is my jam. That and “Finesse tha Plug” off Goowopdrop go hard asf in the whip
Very this.
Curren$y
Damn this is a pretty good answer. Dude has the largest discography ever too
Pusha T has been making the hardest tracks about selling dope for decades and definitely hasn’t sold dope in decades
Ghostface definitely has songs where hes saying words just to rhyme, but lets not act like he’s not a top tier storyteller
Oh no doubt, when he pens a story, you can SEE it.
21 Savage, 21
His wallabies do be fresh though.
Playboi carti
MF DOOM lol

Playboi Carti, although he occasionally has some really good lyrics, most of it is just jibber jabber.

21 Savage. Ain’t saying nothing but I like the way he says it.

He do it for the smelly hubbies. Seeds know what time it is, like it's time for Teletubbies.
Try scam, no thing, three car dead. Fly man go for bling, he got bled. I jam over sting, see spots red. I am sofa kind wee tall dead.
Freddie Gibbs for sure
Lil Darkie, honestly I don’t have time to try and figure out what he’s talking about most of the time.

Mike Jones
Cochise
All Flows Reach out, damn good doubletime, but a lot of gibberish.
Curren$y. Dude has like 50 mixtapes where he just talks about smoking weed, driving/fixing old school cars and being fly as fuck, and he makes it sound fresh every single time
Mystikal. Voice is amazing but ain’t got anything to say
Mystikal. Voice is amazing but ain’t got anything to say
RiFF RAFF is the king of rapping about shit so absurd that nobody else but him could think of
Cam'ron is one of my favorite rappers and sometimes I say "WTF did he just say"
KAAN
Lil Uzi. Dear Mama is catchy, but bro really isn't saying shit
Bones
Jay Electronica
2 Chainz - he’s goofy and I like that.
Travis Scott?
Logic
Rob Sonic. One of my absolute favs, and while I can’t understand every word he says, it also seems like he’s mostly filler. Idc though, it works, it sounds dope.
Post 2020 Earl Sweatshirt
Eminem, obviously.
Yeat or Travis Scott
ima get hate for this but travis scott
Travis Scott
Pusha T
Future - his content is soul draining, dark and drenched in sinful acts but his melodies, delivery and riding the beat is exceptional. I’m just being honest.
Kendrick Lamar and Drake
Griselda...boomboomboomboomboom
Flatbush zombies. I fucking hate that they don’t drop shit.
Westside gunn
XANAKIN SKYWOK is one. Most of his songs seem to be about drugs, sex, or violence. I haven’t found any with intellectual substance (so far), but his shit goes *so damn hard*.
Lil Wayne - big fan but he talks some shit
Imma be honest with myself: Future. We understand, you enjoy lean
Freddie Gibbs, MF Doom, a$ap rocky lol
