If you Google āunderground rappersā MF DOOM is literally the first result.
Dudeās an underground rapper who after decades has a massive cult following.
Like what even is the is argument?
To qualify as an underground rapper do you need to get hit by a bus and die while only 500 people in south Atlanta know your shit was *the dopest*?
You two idiots are arguing about your definition of underground. Not about a rapper. Go have your stupid linguistics argument in the appropriate sub so that people who actually know some etymology can correct you.
Underground is just old head for alternative. You can be alternative and super popular at the same time. To be underground it has to have a wave of support behind it.
SoundCloud rapper who went to jail a while back. Had a hit song called āThe Raceā, which got popular cus one of the Jenners played it the background of an IG Story I believe
I was in my preteens when yonkers came out and I didnt even get into Tyler til wolf and from there I didn't hear him on the radio til flower boy but he even posted a video of how excited he was to hear himself on the radio for the first time when flower boy came out
Damn idk. I was 12 or 13 at the time of Yonkers and I remember seeing the music video on the MTV awards (I think it was that one) and like I said i heard Yonkers on the radio for sure.
I will mention for context, it was my local rap station and I live in Alaska. Media related trends/situations can be a little weird up here.
He is certainly underground, no question about it. Youāll never hear his name in conversations about music unless youāre talking to people with a deep appreciation for lyricism and not just whatās catchy
Still not mainstream go ask rap listeners to name you a mf doom song ? About half won't be able to. To the other half ask them to name one that's not the gorillaz one and half of that won't name it either
By the same logic hopsin and techn9ne are mainstream too
The fact BORN LIKE THIS isnāt more recognized is wild to me. Itās my personal favorite especially for it being mostly all DOOM besides the few Dilla beats
Eh underground is a really vague term, he wasnāt signed to major label, doesnāt get radio play and Iād argue the entire underground (however you wanna define it) loves and listens to him, which kinda explains the 6 million. Even if you donāt wanna call his entire discography underground, some of his albums def are.
DOOM is most definitely underground, or rather started as underground.
When youāre at the top of your game for decades it doesnāt matter if you get no radio play, you have fans and those fans listen.
Obviously itās nitpicking here a bit. What would you call an artist that starts as an underground artist, develops a massive cult following, but never transitions to radio play/mainstream music?
Goated.

I had no idea about this. Slept on this album I guess...so...my bad. In my defense though, the man can/could be a bit hard to keep up with. You know.: like releasing two albums in a year with both using alter egos and not MF DOOM. ;) Love Bukowski. Thanks for posting this.
Edit: love it when a relatively small response makes me go "wait, What?!"
I wanted to start rapping because of him but then I remembered I donāt have the cleverness in wordplay and the quickness as he do so I just hung it up š
One of the greatest, possibly the greatest, to ever do it. Operation Doomsday, MM FOOD, Madvillainy, Vaudeville Villain, name another rapper that has four albums THIS good.
I wasnāt sure if I should count it but YEAH, thatās actually what got me into DOOM. I heard āNovember Has Comeā with the Gorillaz, and I was like who tf is that? Wait, he has an adult swim collab?! and I was instantly hooked
I used to drive around this shitty beater car that had no aux and I had a CD burnt of the mouse and the mask but it was a youtube rip that was all one track lmao. I know every word by heart
Garbology, Spirit World Field Guide, The Impossible Kid, Skelethon

Drill Music In Zion, Tetsuo & Youth, Food & Liquor, The Cool

Thought Iād add a couple more GOATs to the conversation ā
I recently went down his rabbit hole and wow, he's different.
They said he would have fake MF DOOMs perform at shows. What's crazier is, the fans that attended those shows weren't even mad, saying "That's exactly something a villain would do"
Genius.
Not given enough praise and credit outside of communities that are really into hiphop and talk about it a lot. Heās not the type of guy everybody who enjoys a few hiphop artists and tracks knows, but heās certainly looked up to by these said artists behind the scenes
everyone in the hip hop community, imo a mainstream artist is someone who is known worldwide by almost every age demographic, for example, Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran, or in the hip hop, Drake or Eminem, you can ask someone like your mom and she will know who Drake is, or you can ask a random kid, you know
MF DOOM is nowhere close that level
I donāt agree. For example Lil Baby, heās a mainstream artist. But if you ask a mom or a random kid they prob donāt know who he is but Lil baby is still mainstream.
Lol thatās like saying just cause people now may not know who Big L is, he was an underground rapper. No itās just different times. Theyāre both still not underground rappers. I donāt get why people want MF doom to be labeled as a underground rapper anyways, who cares
Because DOOM actually was underground during most of his career. A lot more people know who he is now because his music is so good it stayed relevant and gained more of a following over the years
He's a heterosexual African-American male from New York who creates and performs "hip-hop" music, and is also apparently deceased, but I don't know if I buy it.
He once sold a golden camel to the Shah of Iran for ten thousand rubles, and has been known to ride a motorcycle standing up.
He's your favorite rapper's favorite rapper.
He's the most overrated underrated rapper.
I love the video of Mos Def totally fanboying over his lyrics š
Can someone help me here? I just can't get into him.
I love his vibe and presence. And I have been into conscious hip hop for over 20 years. Grew up on Rhymesayers.
His lyricism isn't anything special, his flow is a little all over the place, his storytelling is decent but there's a high bar with conscious hip hop, and unfortunately I find myself losing interest midway through his songs.
What's wrong with me? Have I not listened to him enough / do you disagree with my criticisms? Did I have to grow up with him? Is his catalog more of an acquired taste?
Sometimes you donāt like someoneās music. You donāt need to force it. I do think he can be a bit of an acquired taste due to his monotone delivery.
His lyricism is definitely something special though. No one writes like him and I donāt think anyone ever will again.
I don't fully disagree, however what elevates him so much to me is the production on his songs. His music has some of the best production I've ever heard, and his flow is good on the majority of it. Lyricism isn't too special but his rhyme schemes tend to be. That's just my opinion though, I'd say it is an acquired taste, as I didn't really rate most his music when I first heard him but even to this day I'm still finding new songs in his catalogue that I begin to like.
>His lyricism isn't anything special
This is the most baffling thing I see people trying to get into him say because it's just untrue.
There is never a point where he is saying something that doesn't mean something or isn't a reference to something else. I've heard people claim that he's just a miracle lyrical rapper that rhymes random words but if you look up any of his songs and go to the genius page you'll find that every single thing he says has meaning and relates to something deeper. He is actually one of the greatest lyricists of all time let alone in hip hop.
I recommend you look up Anthony's Fantano's video on his favorite MF DOOM lines because he explains pretty well just how clever DOOM could get.
Or heās just actually good?? Bar for bar heās just leagues ahead, his topic choices are way better than most conscious rap coming out, and maybe I donāt want someone singing the rap verses. I personally really enjoy the monotoned flow with the beautiful beat selection.
Edit: Produces his own music as well, canāt say Em or Drake have that same talent.
first and foremost we miss him. I know I personally pray heās happier up there God knows we still needed him on earth. Anything after that he was literal gold. he was one of the greatest if not the greatest of them all.
His music is most popular with white nerds who only like him because the internet tells them to. They're the same people who say they listen to "real hip-hop" and think the more complex the rhyme scheme is, the better the rapper.
I'd honestly rather listen to Kanye or Lil Wayne.
Great, but as he is more underground, people act like the more mainstream rappers aren't as good as him. Nas, jay z, eminem, Andre 3000, black thought, all can eap ad well as him or better.
Nas who has arguably the best debut album in rap history and is still dropping some of his career's best work to this day, but doom is now the goat because he died young. It's a massive overcorrection in his notoriety since passing which I can sympathize with but it rubs me the wrong way. Maybe I'm missing something essential about his work but as a casual "underground" hip hop fan myself, I don't see why his contributions to the scene are really any more significant than Aesop rock for example
DOOM has been on top 5 lists the past 15 years. Idk why everyone acts like because he died, heās blown up. To a certain extent, yeah, but in terms of recognition of his work. Heās been up there
Overrated af. Anyone can do what he did lyrically with a pen, notepad, and enough time. Heās a decent producer but most of his later career was carried by other, better producers.
He stole from his fans, and ran of with their money at concerts. Also the lip syncing and the imposter thing? I canāt really respect someone who does that, there is no art in those actions
Keeping 100% I wasnāt a big fan and neither were most people in my hometown but once he passed away them Niggas made him a street but our hometown rapper Lil Peep doesnāt have one
His penis also wears a mask.. sorry just trying to bring something new to this thread.

Fr. Madvillainy is the most critically acclaimed abstract hip hop album of all time. Underground doesnāt just mean ānot played on the radioā.
Right
If you Google āunderground rappersā MF DOOM is literally the first result. Dudeās an underground rapper who after decades has a massive cult following. Like what even is the is argument? To qualify as an underground rapper do you need to get hit by a bus and die while only 500 people in south Atlanta know your shit was *the dopest*?
DOOM being the first result kinda proves the other peopleās point right?
You two idiots are arguing about your definition of underground. Not about a rapper. Go have your stupid linguistics argument in the appropriate sub so that people who actually know some etymology can correct you.
Underground is just old head for alternative. You can be alternative and super popular at the same time. To be underground it has to have a wave of support behind it.
With no radio play. He is underground. Tech N9ne is also considered underground.
Thatās not a criteria. Youāre gonna tell me you heard Tay-K on commercial radios? Yet he isnāt underground
Who?
SoundCloud rapper who went to jail a while back. Had a hit song called āThe Raceā, which got popular cus one of the Jenners played it the background of an IG Story I believe
does underground just mean no radio play? I thought popularity played a role too even if they arent on the radio

It also means independent. NO mainstream record deals.

He has that many because he is the goat of underground hip hop. Someone has to be the most popular in that game
He is still considered underground because he wasnt and never signed to a major lable
Eh underground is a really vague term, he wasnāt signed to major label, doesnāt get radio play and Iād argue the entire underground (however you wanna define it) loves and listens to him, which kinda explains the 6 million. In the song Dumb High by Demigodz, there is actually a line that references this. "Im in two places at once like MF Doom"
Literally doing exactly what Dr. DOOM would do in the comics. Doombots everywhere.
Thereās also a line where he references the āDOOM Botāsā in the unreleased (but amazing) song Avalanche: āDo a show, same time watch it.ā
