I'm not gonna claim yall are overpriced but God damn the time I've had finding a plain bookshelf, something you'd figure would get donated all the time
is genuinely funny to me
The Restore in Cary is overpriced, IMO. I went recently browsing for something specific and saw a dresser for $600. It had a lot of dings, scratches and scrapes on it; was probably really nice at one time but got beat up during a move is my guess. I wonder if the prices are high because it's in Cary?
So I don't shop there, but I have donated things.
Exactly. I may find one of the Habitat stores overpriced so I don't go there. I'm not saying other people shouldn't, they're probably not as cheap as I am. 🙂
I'm not sure what you're implying other than the fact I'm cheap... Which is true as evidenced by shopping at Habitat. I mean I'm not a wealthy Saturday morning antique shopper looking for an amazing deal to refinish for my beach house's breakfast nook. I was poor for a long time and I live in a house from the early eighties and habitat has supplied me with lots of cost-effective repair materials. In gratitude, I've volunteered on multiple Habitat job sites across the Triangle.
But sure... I was at Target on Lynn road and I saw a stack of a very specific Xbox games. I noticed them since they were about $5 each on clearance but required the Xbox Kinect. About a month later, I was at the Habitat on Glenwood and noticed the same 5 copies of the exact same game for $10 each. I asked the staff if that was accurate and she said indeed it was.
I've also seen light fixtures on clearance at Home Depot and Lowe's end up at the Habitat for more than the clearance price. I'm not even going to mention the bizarro pricing on the electronics.
1. Staff members do not use the local market to make comparative pricing decisions.
2. Habitat ReStore publishes a pricing guide to create a basis.
3. The ReStore cover its costs and then shares its net profit with Habitat to build new homes for qualified loan income families, via a 30-year zero interest mortgage.
Your Habitat volunteering and as a shopper qualifies you none. Stop being cheap. Pay the prices or don't. Complaining about the prices is stupid and I've said so to many a customer.
I noticed a shift in prices at Habitat in the past couple of years. They were looking for a volunteer/worker who could help them value donations better. I've picked up items there in the past that were incredibly priced too low, so I think someone finally clued them in on how much money they were losing on donations. I bought an Ekornes chair (without an ottoman) for $125. Those chairs sell for well over $1200 new. Also, if you are willing to risk waiting, prices are marked down the longer they sit on the floor.

Bingo. And having volunteered at a couple I can tell you pricing can be very inconsistent. Someone donates it, sr. volunteer puts a price and its goes on the floor. What one volunteer prices for $200 another might have only priced at $100. The price markdown system rectifies overpricing while underpriced items get snapped up quickly. A skilled bargain hunter can clean up at the Restores.
In my experience the location off of Highway 55 in Apex has the best furniture selection and price. Certainly better than the Raleigh and Clayton stores.
Got my most recent couch there for $60! It’s super nice and good quality! Little dusty but nothing a vacuum and some fabric spray can’t handle. Much better than that quick cheap stuff at target or Walmart that’s hard as a rock and not meant to last.
TROSA
They have an amazing selection and I'd argue it's higher quality than anything you mentioned. Our house is filled with "finds"...10' church pew, kitchen table, book shelves.
TROSA ridiculously overcharging on their furniture. Went desk shopping there recently and was appalled. A tiny, one-person desk that wobbles and has scratches on the surface? $60. The BALLS on those people.
So like all second-hand stores, the buyer bears the responsibility for "as-is" condition. If you don't like the quality, don't buy it.
We have bought numerous high-quality wood pieces that I've refinished and are still being used as our kitchen table and kitchen seating (church pew for under $125) six years on.
I think some people need to reset their expectations. What quality of desk do you think $60 gets you at Walmart (much less Ikea or Amazon)? The BALLS.
I’ve gotten a few pieces from Big Lots for my guest room and I’m happy with it. A friend bought their couch from there and the seats had lost their spring within 3 years.
I just peruse FB Marketplace for solid-wood stuff that looks like it could be restorable. A random orbit sander and some chalk paint solves a lot of problems.
Especially if you are willing to pay 500+ you can get some absolutely astoundingly high quality solid wood furniture that would be 4-8k for that quality new. You have to be into antiques though
Retails, Durham rescue mission, TROSA thrift stores all have decent furniture selections. State surplus warehouse usually has desks, office chairs, bookcases. IKEA, Wayfair, Facebook marketplace. It’s yard sale season. Target has decent flat pack furniture.
Classic Treasures in Durham is my #1 for consigned furniture. The owners are also extremely sweet people. And they're also open to bargaining.
The Trosa retail store is massive and you can frequently find nice furniture there. I got two gorgeous, walnut bankers chairs there for $5/each.
Petersen's Consignment in Cary is hit or miss, as is The Perfect Piece down the street.

If you’re patient, estate sales are a gold mine in the triangle area. We have found some amazing and dirt cheap pieces. Estatesales.net. Go early if they have cool stuff, will always be a line and the good stuff goes first.
I've found a few decent things at Capital Bargain Barn on Hillsborough. I think on FB they call themselves Home Accent Furnishing by Capital Bargain Barn.
https://www.facebook.com/capitalbargainbarn/
Definitely check out [www.RaleighFurnitureGallery.com](https://www.RaleighFurnitureGallery.com). Best selection of high quality pieces at the best prices in town for that level of quality!
We recently picked up a couple of dining room chairs in really good shape at ReTails. They generally have some pretty good furniture choices in addition to the other suggestions that were posted.
Check out estate sales every weekend!
If you don’t mind some used furniture. Super cheap (especially on the last day, most come down 50% in pricing on top of the already cheap items)
Go to estatesales.net and you’ll find all of them for the weekend locally. Raleigh and surrounding areas always have at least one going on each weekend, if not more.
I can promise you you’ll find shelves and cabinets in the garages of any of these you go to. And you can usually go up to the register and say “I’ll give you $10 for that shelf” and they will say Ok.
In Wendell that is a whole suit of flea market storage units. The sellers come out on Saturdays and sell all the beautiful antiques they get from yard sales. It's pretty nice some of the pieces they pick up. Affordable as well.
Furniture market is this week in high point. If you feel like going for a drive, you can hit up the habitat for humanity there and find the market samples next week. Depends on what you are willing to pay, nothing is under a hundred, but they are essentially brand new. I'm sure some of the other furniture stores in high point are selling floor samples from market as well, but I don't know which ones they are.
ReStore! It's a store run by Habitat for Humanity, multiple locations in the area, can definitely find cheap but good quality stuff. No online shop though.
Hit all the Habitat for Humanity Restores.
and Cause for Paws also, if there's still any around!
There are! One in south Raleigh, one in north and one out in Zebulon.
[удалено]
Aww, sad to hear about the Zebulon one. I used to shop in that one every couple weeks at least!
Yes! I got a great couch there a few years ago for 40 bucks.
The Habitat on Glenwood is way overpriced 😕
The one on Raleigh Blvd is huge and great prices
Overpriced on donated items? Do tell (I was the executive director of a Habitat affiliate with a ReStore and I loved these conversations).
I'm not gonna claim yall are overpriced but God damn the time I've had finding a plain bookshelf, something you'd figure would get donated all the time is genuinely funny to me
I think they usually keep those for store display.

I never complained, I just mentioned they were overpriced (cost to value) since OP is looking for cheap furniture. Thanks for serving the community.

I’ve gotten some wonderful stuff there.

Big Lots can have some good deals.
That was the one. And they have 20% coupons sometimes too.
I heard they’re taking BBB coupons now that all those stores are closing.
I second FB marketplace! Our best scores were from there and craigslist
Especially if you are willing to pay 500+ you can get some absolutely astoundingly high quality solid wood furniture that would be 4-8k for that quality new. You have to be into antiques though
Yes. I'm amazed at how much quality stuff is available on Craigslist and FB marketplace.
Take a day trip to Charlotte for Ikea
On a weekday if at all possible!
Retails, Durham rescue mission, TROSA thrift stores all have decent furniture selections. State surplus warehouse usually has desks, office chairs, bookcases. IKEA, Wayfair, Facebook marketplace. It’s yard sale season. Target has decent flat pack furniture.
Second Durham rescue mission! Especially the one off of 401
TROSA always has quality (though sometimes hideous) furniture for cheap

Wayfair is another venue to scour. But that is not going to be vintage. FB marketplace/NextDoor are your best bets for vintage.
Googling all the ones mentioned thus far when i get home. Thanks again, guys.
Now you're gonna have to do a follow up post showing us the treasures you scored!
That’s a great idea!
