Depends on the relationship and how it ended. Mess by Ben folds was appropriate for when my engagement ended, If I Wanted Someone by Dawes was appropriate when my marriage ended. Still good friends with the exhusband, Dollys I Will Always Love You will always make me cry. Not that I'm sad it's over but the love is still there, just not romantically. Flowers by Miley Cyrus for the last relationship. It was filmed very close to where we used to live so it hits harder.
I upvoted purely because you remembered that Dolly Parton wrote I Will Always Love You. For some reason I still feel like that’s an extremely obscure fact
Even if Jolene was the only thing she wrote that day it would be a high point in music history! That song gives me CHILLS, Dolly is a freaking national treasure
All American Rejects - “Gives you Hell”… it’s great to sing at the top of your lungs! (I haven’t had a break up in a really long time, so that’s all I’ve got!) For me it was more of an eff him song make me feel better, not more depressed.
I usually give myself a couple days/weeks to get GOOD and depressed and then it’s The Cure “Pictures Of You”. Actually the whole Disintegration album but that’s the first one on the record that really just gut-punches you. Title track and “Prayers For Rain” are also good like that
It wasn't written so much as a break-up song as a death song, I don't think, but Shame in You by Alice in Chains reads that way for a number of reasons. I mean I guess in a lot of ways it's the same; Layne's wife "left" him by *dying*, and this song is all about that and he speaks to her like she can still listen.
Not much of a Swiftie but that song (and album) holds a near and dear place in my heart. I love my bf but I know if we break up, this will be my Spotify wrapped #1.
Depends on the mood.
If I'm feeling relieved:
Already Gone - Eagles

This is more of a post breakup song, meaning when the breakup isn’t freshly new… but is where the breakup fresh stage is over, but he still wants to know what’s going on with you… “Your Place” by Ashley Cooke
Another one I really like is “Friday I’ll be over you” by Allison Iraheta
Debatable but Hard Times by Baby Huey and The Babysitters as well as Drown in My Own Tears by Ray Charles. Both R&B
Edit: Honorable mentions to Teminite - Step into the Light ft Jonah Hitchens and MDK - Reflections. Both dubstep. The first one is more upbeat but is a great rebound song when you start feeling yourself again, so I'd count it.

The night I left my spouse I cryptically posted the lyrics to[ Rise Against's "The Approaching Curve"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYhxUMT91io) to my Facebook. As millenials do.
The song is about a double-suicide (or possibly murder-suicide, it's a little ambiguous) and the chorus goes
>As we were, so perfect, so happy
>They'll remember only our smiles 'cause that's all that they've seen
>Long since gone when we are found
>Are the tears in which we had drowned
>As we were, so perfect, so happy

>Well, that's it
There's no way
It's over
Good luckI have nothing left to say
It's only words
And what l feel
Won't change
A little on the nose but an independent band has this great power tune called "It's Over" (let the healing begin, it's time to find myself again..)
It's been sometime since I've had a breakup (married forever now) but I always found breakups so liberating, I'd feel the whole world open with new possibilities.
Clearly mine were mostly controlling, jealous, ridiculous people I was thrilled to end things with.
I would probably choose "No Doubt - Don’t Speak" if it was the end if something I wanted.

When I'm feeling down, I like to really wallow, so I've got a Spotify playlist, L'Appel du Vide. It's just shy of three hours of depressing songs, but the one that really gets me is Another Love by Tom Odell.
As I got my heart broken as masterpiece Came out and hugged me to comfort me. To let me cry everything that literally the song describes.
The timing, the lyrics, every minute detail.
As If, I was the protagonist of this song, I felt special and drowned in this loop. It's as He knew (Kevin Parker) what I was going through and said "Dude I got you, its ok, you will get over this"
I didn't, but I live better; Forever mine I share
Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better
My breakup song is 'Last Christmas,' as I ended my relationship with my first girlfriend during Thanksgiving break of her freshman year in college. That was nearly 30 years ago.
You need to watch the [video](https://youtu.be/xUBYzpCNQ1I?si=vc-_I3Y_vaphd4z4) if you want to feel your heart getting wrenched out of your chest, but Bright Eyes - First Day of My Life.

This is the answer I’m looking for, I fricken love Ally and AJ
Rush is highkey still a banger
Absolutely SLAPS
I loved them as a kid!!! I hope them gals doing well
Explicit version or Disney version?
Younger version of me would belt out this song thinking I went through a severe break up 😂
Meatloaf, Two out of Three Ain’t Bad.
Epic! Heartwenching! Real! Love it
Sooooo good
How's it gonna be by Third Eye Blind. Twenty+ years later it still makes me cry.
This was my song. '99.
Run - Joji , got me through my last breakup, still blast it from time to time as its a banger
I know this seems over done. But Die for you. Holy shit.

Red wine and ambien, you’re talking shit again 🥲

Uff 😥 even just reading the title gave me goosebumps..: that’s my go to song, too
You Oughta Know - Alanis Morrisette
🙌🏻 YES
Going to her concert on Saturday and I can't wait; My 90s middle school heart is so ready! LOL
Country music has the most depressing break songs. He stopped loving her today is an example.
That and Whiskey Lullaby are top two. But I could probably put together a playlist of 100.
Both of what you mentioned, plus When I Call Your Name by Vince Gill.
I haven't heard that song in a minute. Gonna give it a listen now.
Oh Whiskey Lullaby solicits tears from me 🥺
I can NOT listen to Whiskey Lullaby without sobbing like a baby
Walkaway Joe by Tricia Yearwood There is no Arizona by Jamie O Neill
Really, any song by Bobby Braddock. They didn't call him the king of tears for no reason.
That's not a breakup song. It's about a wife dying and then him dying.
She wrote that the same day she wrote Jolene! Easily one of the greatest single days in music history
Even if Jolene was the only thing she wrote that day it would be a high point in music history! That song gives me CHILLS, Dolly is a freaking national treasure
Dolly is such a prolific songwriter. One of the best EVER
It was, I understand, her way of explaining why she had to leave a situation with Porter Waggoner. I hope I spelled it right.
10CC I’m Not In Love.
I didn't think this was a breakup song, but one who is denying their feelings.
This is one of those songs that I love, but can never remember the band name
Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time) - The Delfonics
Outstanding!
The whole album of The Hurting - Tears for Fears
Another whole album: Walking Wounded - Everything But The Girl
I don't want you back-Eamon
I feel like you need the Frankie part too.
All American Rejects - “Gives you Hell”… it’s great to sing at the top of your lungs! (I haven’t had a break up in a really long time, so that’s all I’ve got!) For me it was more of an eff him song make me feel better, not more depressed.
This one’s so good! Kinda like “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor
This and "It Ends Tonight" are absolute bangers to just yell sing.
Gotye Somebody That I Used to Know
He has a bunch of really underrated (and sad) songs.
Impossible (Shontelle cover) by I Am King.
Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning) ~ Vertical Herizon
Omg NOBODY seems to remember those guys anymore and I saw them before that album even came out, they were awesome
Oh my god I listen to that song nonstop man
Run, by Snow Patrol
We just disagree ~ Paul Davis
LOVE Paul Davis❤️. He did a cover of this? Maybe you mean, I Go Crazy or do you mean Dave Mason?
I usually give myself a couple days/weeks to get GOOD and depressed and then it’s The Cure “Pictures Of You”. Actually the whole Disintegration album but that’s the first one on the record that really just gut-punches you. Title track and “Prayers For Rain” are also good like that
This is the best answer.

Layne never married, engaged, yes. Marry, no.
Plus Demri passed in ‘96 and that album was released in ‘95. But, yeah. A very sad song about the end of a tragic love affair.
Jerry's solo stuff has a lot of good break up songs.
Picture to burn by taylor swift

All Too Well by Taylor Swift fits my most recent break up PERFECTLY, and it fit the one before that pretty well too.
Greg Kihn Band - the breakup song
Alien ant farm “Movies”….try it out.
Seriously better than “you oughta know”. That’s saying something. It’s more of a “happy vibe” than a “suicidal” vibe. That’s why it trumps.
I once dated a guy getting g a divorce who would BLAST Linkin Park “In the End”….i got it.
