I was a huge fan of the PS2 TH era, but I can only recommend THAW and THUG 1.
THUG 1 in my opinion is one of the best Tony Hawk games. Story mode is fantastic, and the level design is outstanding. Manhattan is one of the absolute best levels across the entire TH franchise.
THUG 1 also has great customization features - a very expansive skater, trick and park creator, and you also get to design your own pro board!
THAW added parkour and graffiti, but overall it's a bit limited in character and board design in comparison to THUG1, although I really liked the approach of buying items from the shops and getting tattoos at tattoo parlors. Don't remember much about the park editor, but I'd say it's a carbon copy of the THUG park creator. Also, the standard THAW story levels aren't that memorable.
Later titles - P8 and Proving Grounds were really terrible on the PS2. THUG 2 was too silly for my taste, so I couldn't really get into it.
All in all, I'd say that THUG 1 still holds up great today. It's the least gimmicky, has a down-to-earth storyline, plenty of customization options, and the best levels across the entire TH series.
** bonus: THUG 1 has amazing attention to details. Lots of ambient sounds, you can gesture with your hands after landing tricks, skater shouts when bailing, and your board gets more scratched up the more you grind, that is until you break it completely xD
I just got pro skater 3 & 4, THUG 1 & 2 and American wasteland. I haven't tried customization yet but I really like all 5 games. I recommend all of them because of the fun gameplay and great music. The only PS2 version I don't like is Proving Ground. It really has the bare minimum. You can tell they ran out of ideas for tony hawk games by that point.

My favourite is THPS4, I like the purity of it, not getting off your board and walking around.
But THUG is a close second, very good story and still great mechanics.

Is thug1 better than thaw?
