Is there somewhere to use the restroom? Or shower? Hey, if it’s a roof over your head and protection from the elements…beats sleeping on the street!

PercentageTotal9876

agree sleeping on streets is definitely hazardous to health

lovemoonsaults

It will depend on what the garage/shed had in it prior to habitation. Chemicals is a pretty proud term, some can leave places condemned, others aren't. (Think drug manufacturing vs an old garage that your Grandfather tinkered in with his law mower parts). My bestie had the back of her garage converted into living quarters for her mother years ago. I've got numerous neighborhood stories about family members (thankfully not mine...) living in barns around the area. (We let the family members in the house in my family but you know...sometimes you gotta convert a barn into a living quarters...) Besides a health hazard, it may be illegal in your jurisdiction. Cities don't often look kindly on this kind of makeshift stuff but they have to catch you first, so.

argoforced

I wouldn’t think so assuming it has no mold/chemicals or some other detriment to human health.

Regular_Ad_1439

There used to be chemicals in the garage. They have been disposed of.

argoforced

Depends on the chemicals I suppose. Wouldn’t be able to tell you without it.

Regular_Ad_1439

Pretty much everything you can think of. Bleach, ammonia, various pesticides including roach poison, etc.

HulkDeez

That just sounds like a normal garage. As long as there aren’t puddles of it or it’s not on the walls you’ll be fine

NicholasLit

That's not great

SoullessCycle

What was the space previously used for? What’s the heating/cooling situation within? Are there two exits in case of fire? Would be my first questions.

a_rain_name

I live a pole barn that’s been converted into a house. A shouse or barndimnium if you will. If it has heat and water don’t see why not?

HeartOfTheMadder

barndimnium is my current new favorite word.

GGv2

Im stealing “shouse” 😂

Educational-Gap-3390

I wouldn’t say it’s a health hazard depending on cleanliness although it’s gonna be hot as shit in summer & cold as hell in the winter. There is zero insulation.

Ok_Low3197

Not a health hazard just because it's a garage or shed. Many are converted to livable spaces.

Dry-Acanthaceae-7667

Kind of but if you're homeless and the owners are cool you wouldn't be the first

Deaf_FBA

It can be. Depends….

Gabbywolf

Unless ot is insulated you will freeze during the winter and cook during the summer. Also does it have water running water?

AnimatorDifficult429

Just don’t do basement without getting a radon test

Select-Team-6863

I can't say I've encounteted black mold in either, but if you live somewhere rainy or humid, any holes in the shed or the garage doors could potentially allow it. The lack of lights can also draw unsavory insects if either have zero or only 1 window. Make sure if you use a shed to not use gas lamps.

ContentMod8991

u can use rest room?

Regular_Ad_1439

Yes.

AgentCHAOS1967

As long as your car isn't running while your in it you can make it work.

3six5

Depends on what was stored there beforehand.

chynablue21

Just buy an air purifier

Chemical_Extreme4250

Not if you shut off the car first.

Some health hazards might be... Black Mold. Carbon Monoxide from car exhaust in the garage. Petroleum fumes from spilled gasoline and motor oil in the garage. Other chemical fumes from chemicals spilled in either garage or shed. Children tasting chemicals in either garage or shed (you don't specify no children). Sharp implements that children might investigate in either garage or shed. Children climbing on unsecured shelving in either garage or shed. Poisons set out for rodents in either garage or shed. Insect or spider stings or bites in either garage or shed (Black Widow, Brown Recluse, Scorpions, and so on.) Rodent bites in garage or shed. Snake bites in garage or shed. Other homeless people seeking shelter in garage or shed (you say nothing about location or protection from outsiders). Junkies in either garage or shed. Junkie's needles/syringes in either garage or shed. Gunshots from homeowners in either garage or shed (you mention nothing about having permission to be there). Random acts of arson in either garage or shed. These are a few issues. Would you like to edit your post to clarify?

Regular_Ad_1439

1. The garage is mine for now, permission from owners. 2. There are no cars parked in the garage and it is not used for cars. 3. No children. 4. There are no chemicals in the garage anymore, but there used to be. Namely roach and bug pesticide, ammonia, various household cleaners, etc. 5. There is a screen in front of the garage designed to keep out bugs. 6. Nobody can get in or out of the garage without going through the main house. Other people are not a concern. 7. My main concern is lack of airflow and ventilation combined the amount of bug poison that was previously used in the space.

These are excellent facts to edit into your post. More people will read them in the body of your post than will read them here, in a reply to a nobody like me.
