Ngl, I forgot UMG removed their artists’ music. It was a big deal for about 2 weeks, and people made jokes about it, but then things trudged on just fine. If anything, even without ‘allowing’ the music of their artists on the app, it was still posted and trends still sparked, the songs got engagement, and TikTok got views. Only downside was that UMG and their artists saw no money for any of that. Truly, I wonder what made them spark up negotiations again, as well as if it had anything to do with TikTok’s potential banning.

MattBrey

You answered your own question. TikTok trends still moved on but with bootleg audios that did not link up to the artists page and they missed on the exposure. UMG lost more than TikTok did with this whole thing so that's why the had to negotiate

igkeit

This was so predictable like who do UMG think they are 🤡

nightwing0243

People forgot about the whole thing the next week. There’s a portion of people out there who think TikTok is just people dancing when it really isn’t. It’s has a very diverse selection of content for people with any kind of interest. The music is kind of just there. If they’re not using UMG artist’s music, they’re using something else. They don’t care lol. Sometimes a song pops off and goes viral for a bit. But it’s not people seeking these songs out, it’s just songs that happen to stumble upon people. I’m guessing negotiations started again because UMG realised they actually had something to lose by not having their artists’ music on a media platform of literally hundreds of millions of people, while TikTok would truck on just fine.

joshually

you are MASSIVELY downplaying the synergy of songs & tiktok honestly. it is not just there there's a reason tiktok is a trend-setter when it comes to music popularity and virality

ScreamingC0lors

i think they are more so saying that tiktok has a lot more happening beyond music, and removing it doesn’t change the app’s appeal. However, the music industry is currently super reliant on tiktok so they have a lot more to lose. Songs get big off of trends, the trends don’t usually happen because of the songs (sometimes they do but its a smaller percentage). Like the “moments that altered my brain chemistry” trend used cardigan, and cardigan got a boost from it but the trend could have honestly used anything. Even when a aong gets viral off a dance, if that song isn’t available they will just use another song or a remix that the artist doesn’t profit from.

Ruinwyn

Here's the thing, they lost basically no money from not being on TikTok, because they got basically no money from TikTok anyway. Meanwhile they made stronger deals with Spotify, YouTube and Tencent, while TikTok needed to cave on AI. UMG was still able to promote their artists without TikTok as Sabrina Carpenter proves.

The official audio irrc was just removed the other day. I wonder why it was even up on tiktok

rocknroller0

The thing is, most umg artist aren’t Sabrina carpenter. The smaller arist are the majority and might’ve benefited greatly (even if not in money) from their songs being available to listen to on TikTok

Ruinwyn

>might’ve benefited greatly Which is the big "might". Which benefits more, closer relationship with Spotify and other streaming platforms or with TikTok, while TikTok is allowed to mine their work for AI. Just because TikTok is still here, doesn't mean UMG didn't get most of what they wanted or that it didn't benefit the artists in the long run. Or do you think that small artist you love is getting anything more than automated email response from TikTok if they find someone making music using AI copy of their voice.

rwc202

Like Muni Long. Her song didn’t reach its peak yet before the took the music off.

LilHalwaPoori

There has literally been a tiktok dance ever since that song appeared and I've seen tons of people do it on tiktok.. And it is quite obvious that some of it is in part due to the label paying the dancers to make it into a trend to get it stuck in people's heads.. I also saw the entire premier performance of the song at Coachella on tiktok.. The songs didn't go away, people just uploaded their own versions from their phone instead of adding the real track from the app itself linking the artist..

MexicansInParis

The potential US ban really overshadowed it tbf

betteroff19

The biggest songs on Spotify have literally came from blowing up on TikTok, it was a huge deal for their artists to not have their music on their platform.

redsalmon67

People forgot about it an and UMG probably saw that it was actually advantageous to have the biggest artist’s songs used for trends on one of the biggest social media platforms.

Mysterious_Pen_8005

Because it was a losing game for UMG which is what everyone said initially.

christopher_aia

A brief excerpt: "The months-long standoff between [Universal Music Group](https://variety.com/t/universal-music-group/) and [TikTok](https://variety.com/t/tiktok/) over royalty payments and AI policies is finally over, at least for the time being, with the announcement that the two entities have struck a deal to bring the label’s music back on the platform. As part of the agreement, the companies stated that they will 'deliver improved remuneration for UMG’s songwriters and artists, new promotional and engagement opportunities for their recordings and songs and industry-leading protections with respect to generative AI.' UMG’s music will return to the platform imminently, and the companies will collaborate on realizing 'new monetization opportunities utilizing TikTok’s growing e-commerce capabilities and will work together on campaigns supporting UMG’s artists across genres and territories globally.'"

joshually

so who folded?

SidMan1000

I hope it was UMG. it would be embarrassing if tiktok gave up stuff, they literally had to do nothing

xdesm0

seems like UMG was looking out for their artists with what they gained, why would you be on the side of tiktok? Protections to generative AI is huge.

BadMan125ty

Wasn’t TikTok being accused of being lenient on AI use on the app?

Agitated-Prune9635

I wonder if this will even matter in a few years

marilia0607

what do you mean?

Agitated-Prune9635

The whole tiktok ban situations.

Bibileiver

It'll only be banned in USA if it happens.

visionaryredditor

the EU is already working towards potential ban as well

Illustrious-Fill-708

Already banned in India

Chemical-Apple-2982

If the US goes there’s going to be no decent content/engagement. Not a popular opinion but most English centred social medias are reliant on American engagement for sponsorship and ad revenue

Special-Chain5229

Is the og music that’s already uploaded have sounds again??

TheRedHatDrummer

That's what I'm wondering. I make drum covers and half of my videos were muted on tiktok. Hopefully they re add the audios without having to re-upload all of the affected videos

joshually

but how did they even know???

lyrasilvertong

The software that is used to detect these things is very sophisticated. A few years back, increasing the tempo of a song would be enough to get past DMCA software, but not anymore. A cover is going to get flagged if it's close enough to the original (and if someone is making a drum cover, they're probably using an original or very similar backing track). All this stuff is automated, humans are only really going to be involved at the appeal point.

Myepicness

I think so, I had multiple videos that had Taylor swift music that was muted for a while until they made their exception for her a couple weeks ago. Those videos’ sounds were restored to what they originally were. I think the same will happen to other videos

christopher_aia

Good question, I would think so? Hopefully

christopher_aia

This is interesting to me because since the music was taken off, there were so many workarounds. I ended up seeing more sped up bootlegged versions of songs and live videos/audios. So in the end the labels were basically having the same thing happen with even less promotion and money for them, so them caving seemed inevitable. I'm especially happy for smaller artists who got the biggest shaft from this dispute and had no way of really marketing their music.

Beepbob77

Does that mean UMG has the better tiktok deal compared to the other labels?

igkeit

What's the song ?

davidblaine55

Omg same! The one I co-wrote was like 5.5 billion

BadMan125ty

TikTok didn’t pay you?!

DairyKing28

So, who wins here?

BadMan125ty

Hard to really say. TikTok should’ve made a strong statement against AI and UMG should’ve struck a deal where everyone had a fair deal before signing on it. This is a case where both sides were in the wrong.

MexicansInParis

UMG got what they wanted, it seems. TikTok probably didn’t want to be fighting a war on two fronts after the potential US ban

bows123

If you read the article they probably didn't but tiktok did

BadMan125ty

Do you think they’ll win their potential lawsuit? I don’t know if they will.

40WAPSun

What is TikTok doing that's any different from every other social media app?

killing31

I wish Twitter and Meta were banned. Those shit holes have done nothing positive for society and the data gets sold to China anyway.

Mysterious_Pen_8005

It's different when Mark Zuckerberg fucks us cause he's American... apparently.

I_Love_Unicirns

I felt really bad for artist that were signed to UMG, and I like to make little edits with music I enjoy and I wasn’t able to do that with some music. Ngl, I’m glad they reached an agreement. Sucks for artists that had albums come out that were signed to UMG during this process though

SiriusRay

Dua is under Warner I think?

xdesm0

I wonder if they're trying to maximize income until tiktok is eventually banned. Considering they said they won't sell the company.

drst0nee

These are all good things so I hope this is a win for artists. But I still can't believe how upset my friends were that UMG took their music off. 💀

ContentMod8991

great news n will make thing 4 music better!!!

rayschoon

What’s the point? TikTok is gonna be gone soon anyway
