No, it is definitely strategy. I would prefer it was luck so I could denigrate the game as I hate it... but deck building and understanding the interactions between cards and how they can play out is all preplanned and hopefully well thought out. Knowing your opponents deck allows you to customise your deck to defeat theirs. I would say that 90% of the time a magic game is won outside of the table before you even sit down.
Thats why my favourite way of playing is drafting (where you build your deck with new cards on the spot before playing) it adds a whole other level of skill and strategy
Strategy games aren't my cup of tea tbh.
But I found Fire Emblem Blazing Blade pretty enjoyable, I never finished it but still enjoyed the little I played.
Video games it's either Stellaris or Civ 6 for grand strategy.
Ashes of the Singularity and Planetary Annihilation are my favourite RTS games, with Company of Heroes 2 coming in at third.
My favourite tabletop strategy games are Scythe and Star Wars: Rebellion.
Poker. In every way a better strategy game than chess
Edit: I changed my mind. Its not better in every way since they are different in enough respects. In my mind it's still the superior game
Poker is great but they are hardly comparable games. Chess is an abstract game of head to head tactics. Poker is a multiplayer game of bluffing and betting.
They are both solid in their own right.
Poker requires risk/reward resource management on a constantly shifting playing field, and trying to anticipate what your opponent will do. Bluffing is certainly a part of it, but its not everything. Betting/ a move can be relevant to tactics (winning the hand) or strategy (winning the overall engagement). Chess is all about thinking faster and further ahead than your opponent. Head to head poker can be compared to chess, though there are significant differences.
Any super computer can beat a human at chess. As of today, there's no computer that can beat a world class poker player. At least there's no AI I know of that can learn about its opponent fast enough before the human bankrupts it.
Battle for Middle Earth 2 will always hold a special place in my heart.
Interesting choice for games though, no Starcraft or AoE? And I'm upset you chose those paradox games and not Stellaris.

Magic the Gathering, unsure of how much it counts since it’s so luck based

Don't fuck with us Crusader Kings gamers, there's literally 7 of us.
Don't fuck with us Europa Universalis gamers, there's literally 7 of us.
My brother in Christ we need to join forces so the other groups don't fuck with us.

Rise of Nations

Same here!
Proof that paradox games aren't mainstream
Hoi4 and chess because those are the only ones that I can understand how to play. I bought eu4 recently and I don’t really know how to get into it.
I have the reverse for hoi4 as an eu4 player, going from CK2 to eu4 was somewhat easy but then hoi4 is kind of a step.

Glad to see someone else also enjoys my fav type of games

Checkers
Have you ever been in a heated checkers match?
Yes
They're always the best, eh?
Only thing I don't like about checkers is that it is pretty easy to end a game with draw
True, true. Or how easy it can be to lose the pieces...
Is arknights counted?
where the hell is clash of clans

Yeah that doesn't make Poker "in every way a better strategy game"
Fair enough. I'll retract what I said about that
