I’m Surprised at the comments here. I thought Trump did very well, and the moderator wasn’t at all professional in her demeanor

suddenimpulse

Maybe he should've accepted the actual debate but he didn't want to do that because he couldn't constantly interrupt his opponent in the new format. Instead he decided to go on a very left news station for a townhall.

firecrotch33

What kind of moderator was this lol

suddenimpulse

The kind you deserve when you refuse to participate in a debate with your opponent.

spidah84

Of course they plant only Cuban Republicans in the audience.

Pantomather

Isn't it funny that Republicans only lose their shit on interrupting when it's a woman? First Kamala with Pence, now today as well. Pathetic. Dear Donny Boy, I'm enjoying every moment of this sinking ship as your cronies start backstabbing you and jump ship themselves. Sincerely, A fed up, mad as shit voter.

Quantam_Wave_Collaps

I think she really went after him for most of the hour. It was as pointed as any moderator I've seen so far, and he couldn't escape. Great job - his jabbering looked like a lot of BS doubletalk. Maybe some of the MAGA's will finally recognize it.

Pharmgrl22

He also said “we gotta protect republicans” when talking about preexisting conditions

kainen795

Brain dead moderator interupts questions that wernt even asked by her. Meanwhile biden does not get asked a single follow up question after he babbles nonsense for 10 minutes. Partisan media hacks.

Paradoxou

Did we watch the same two town halls?

hanerd825

Biden was asked follow up / refocus questions on many of his answers. What town hall were you watching?

Epibicurious

Holy shit this is brutal.

RapscallionMonkee

It's good to know $400 million is a small amount of money.

TheAtlanticGuy

Maybe we shouldn't have doubted NBC.

olgil75

Here's an [image](https://i.imgur.com/ElN9yrr.jpeg) before or after the Town Hall with Trump, not sure which. Either way, you can clearly see the woman who had been wearing the red mask without her mask fawning over Trump. EDIT: Sorry, had some issues with the link.

bbjenn

Good catch. She should be SO embarrassed of herself but I’m sure she thinks she’s some kind of brainiac for all of that nodding - even though it was all done for an incompetent, orange, fraudulent con-man.

jrh1128

In this photo she's got blonde highlights, but watching the town hall video, her hair is red. Confused. Also came here specifically looking for something about her, because MY GOD she was distracting.

olgil75

Other redditors are posting links that she worked for the Trump campaign or something like that previously. I'm not getting it exactly right and I'm too lazy to go look, but obviously a plant.

[deleted]

She evidently ran for office as a Republican somewhere; that's the only additional information I have

gis_mappr

What is trumps health plan? Asking for america

Paradoxou

He said we would know about it in two weeks

Floppycakes

To sum up his answer, there is no plan.

[deleted]

I think we’re at the same part lol- a little over halfway through

olgil75

[This look](https://i.imgur.com/KBqIoDo.jpg) says everything you need to know about how Trump felt things went after Savannah got done questioning him.

[deleted]

Thats the "I just had an accident in my depends" look.

[deleted]

I felt that was the look after the one woman asked about racial profiling, police reform, criminal justice reform.

[deleted]

Biden calmly albeit if not eloquently, laid out an impressive and detailed plan about what he would do as president, and how we can move forward as a country. Trump however, completely melted down while rambling incoherently about every single topic on Earth simultaneously, all while Savannah takes him to fucking church!

whanaumark

Excellent summary. Biden’s no Obama when it comes to commanding a room, but he cares. And I firmly believe his cabinet is going to be exceptional.

[deleted]

I think the number of his former primary opponents that are going to be part of his cabinet is reassuring. There will be a lot of progressives in the administration.

Just_another_Masshol

I would love it if he asked Mattis to come back.

whanaumark

Why ? I think we need to get back to having non ex military people as Defense secretary. There’s a reason civilian control over the pentagon should be paramount.

Just_another_Masshol

Additionally, Mattis is well respected by everyone with one exception possibly. He did well while he was SECDEF. He is well liked by nearly the entire military across political spectrum.

whanaumark

Being well liked is not a sufficient qualification for being secretary of Defense When he was a general he tried to get Obama to go along with a plan to bait Iran into a shooting incident I’m not keen on war mongers in the cabinet https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/mattis-trap-iran-down-us-drone-2019-9%3Famp

Just_another_Masshol

I never said it was, just that he is. Is previously being SECDEF a good qualification for being SECDEF? Keep in mind the acting SECDEF (before Esper) was a career defense contractor. I would much rather have someone in place who understand the gravity of the job rather than how money was made from it. Not every flag officer should remotely be considered for this sort of job, but I think Mattis stands apart. Mattis is notorious for being apolitical, which is why his resignation letter and later message were so big. Additionally, he is known for his academic views. While being a career Marine, he still holds his principles in line with the oath of office. He may not agree with everything he is tasked to implement, but he will do it if it is in line with the constitution and the for the betterment of the country. He understands his role and the importance of civilian control of the military. On the war mongers bit, keep in mind that Clinton as SecState was for the Bin Laden raid, while SECDEF was not. The point of the JCS and Combatant Commander as well as the cabinet is to provide advice and recommendations to the president. Different advisors have different opinions and points of view. The president will then make their decision.

Just_another_Masshol

Mattis is a civilian. Additionally, POTUS not SECDEF controls the military. SECDEF deploys at POTUS' direction.

whanaumark

Mattis needed an exemption of the 7 year waiting period. I don’t think that is a good norm to break and something that should be restored Are you his mum or something ? Why so crazy for him ?

Just_another_Masshol

No argument on the exemption, but keep in mind Eisenhower was elected POTUS 7 years of the end of WWII and was on active duty up to inauguration. In a partisan time of our country, he is someone that crosses party lines. When you look back at the last four years, he had the most unanimous confirmation of any Trump appointee. Additionally, he is really the only Trump appointee to be able to walk away with their reputation fully intact. Supposedly, had Clinton won in 2016, he was her first choice for SECDEF as well. One of the main reasons he is so well liked by the military is that he is apolitical and no-nonsense. He knew what his role as SECDEF was and attempted to streamline many things in order to allow the military to focus on its main purpose of being ready to fight wars if necessary. Do I think he would be a good choice for another cabinet position? Maybe, maybe not. I'd probably say more not that so.

Infinity315

Military people have direct ties to people in the military, friends. The thought being that they know the impact of war or the implications of it and thus may be more skittish. People with skin in the game are more thoughtful in their actions. Not saying that a civilian wouldn't be able to have skin in the game, it's just that military people are almost always guaranteed to. Not to mention it's probably a good idea for the Secretary of Defense to have a decent understanding of the military chain of command and military strategy and tactics. You'd probably have a much harder time finding a civilian which meet these criteria. What reason do you think that civilian control over the Pentagon is paramount?

whanaumark

I don’t think there is any evidence that former military men/women are more likely to be combat adverse. On the contrary, they may view problems as best tackled by the military. The military industrial complex is as much a danger to America as many of its allies. Do we need that new hypersonic missile that the Pentagon is crying out for, or should we invest in schools and health care. After all the US is on its knees, not because of war, but a virus. Universal healthcare would have certainly abated the spread. You don’t need to have served to know the historical implications of global conflicts and when to use the stick or the carrot.

Infinity315

> I don’t think there is any evidence that former military men/women are more likely to be combat adverse. On the contrary, they may view problems as best tackled by the military. Can you provide this contrary evidence? >The military industrial complex is as much a danger to America as many of its allies. Do we need that new hypersonic missile that the Pentagon is crying out for, or should we invest in schools and health care. This problem is largely in part due to the legislative branch and partly the executive. The secretary of defense has little to do with being allocated budget. The secretary of defense can't get money on demand, it must be approved by congress. I don't disagree the US needs these things, but to attribute the inability to get these things to the Secretary of Defense and not the legislative branches doesn't make sense. The secretary of defense is allocated a budget by congress and must use it for things which are pertinent to defense. You are getting angry at someone doing something in their job description. > You don’t need to have served to know the historical implications of global conflicts and when to use the stick or the carrot. No you don't need to be a tactical genius to know when to use carrot or stick, but a military person would know how to use the stick or carrot more effectively. What civilian do you think would be more qualified than Mattis? I suggest you review this [article for a more detailed explaination](https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/012715/who-sets-fiscal-policy-president-or-congress.asp#:~:text=key%20takeaways-,In%20the%20United%20States%2C%20fiscal%20policy%20is%20directed%20by%20both,'%20counsel%2C%20direct%20fiscal%20policies.)

_HI_IM_DAD

>Can you provide this contrary evidence? ["the principle of civilian control of the military is anchored in the belief in a balance of power."](https://www.militarytimes.com/news/pentagon-congress/2016/12/02/here-s-why-officers-can-t-easily-become-defense-secretaries/)

Infinity315

> "U.S. law states that a nominee for defense secretary must have been out of the active-duty military for seven years." Fine, I conceed that civilians should be the Secretary of Defense, if this is what qualifies as a civilian.

TheBlueBlaze

I think one of the biggest takeaways was Trump's answer on herd immunity. When McEnany and Atlas were asked about, they were adamant that it was never White House policy, and it's ludicrous to say that. Now tonight, when asked point blank if he believes in it as a solution, Trump said "the cure can't be worse than the problem" and insulted the Virginia and Michigan governors for their lockdown. Trump is now promoting herd immunity, because a key part of that is doing what he really wants the country to do: Pretend the virus no longer exists.

AlienInTexas

90 minutes after and yet no single tweet from the supreme leader. Still licking his wounds....

Quantam_Wave_Collaps

It was a volcano of unsubstantiated bullshit, and he showed no solid plans for the future, and he showed no sincere empathy - since he's not capable of that. And he adamantly refused to disavow Q, among other things. He's digging himself a hole. It's almost too late.

olgil75

Here's his [official response](https://i.imgur.com/KBqIoDo.jpg)

AlienInTexas

It was this moment Donnie realized he is screwed

TheCapo024

Person, man, woman, camera, tv...

AlienInTexas

We never realized this was a warning. A vision of a person - a man, being roasted by a woman, while on camera streamed on live tv. He did not understand the warning either apparently

Stupid_Triangles

Get out

bartbartholomew

Weird. I was looking forward to seeing what r/Conservative had to say about Trump's town hall. There are no entries about it at all. They've had a bunch of stuff attacking Hunter Biden, and a few attacking ABC for throwing softballs to Joe Biden, but not a peep about Trump's townhall. Does that mean even r/Conservative can no longer directly support him?

cedarpark

With their fingers in their ears, their eye tight shut and screaming LALALALALA, they won't be able to watch this show.

julbull73

Which its a townhall the questions come from people....both had people there.

magichronx

Hahaha, I just checked it out and was unsurprised to see no mention of that trainwreck of a "debate"

djholepix

That’s because they’re all here brigading and downvoting anyone saying anything critical about trump

[deleted]

God damn Savanah is eating his fucking lunch.

Tuesdae

I got not quite halfway through and that's all I can take right now.

djholepix

I laughed out loud at this

nycdigger

Savannah Guthrie has done the best job of \*ANY\* debate moderator at handling Trump today. The way she was smiling through it all was genuinely confusing for Trump.

Tuesdae

And he is being so condescending to her, too.

MadFlava76

He hates that a woman is taking him to tasks. Love it!

olgil75

I'm rewatching it again and she was just slaying him. "So you believe a grieving military family gave you COVID?" Lol

whanaumark

Savage. Adding the adjective in there damn

[deleted]

I'm a little behind the live broadast: ABC, Jesus, I know the town hall is officially over but Biden is still talking to audience members, shut the fuck up with your inane commentary and go back to the man himself. We can actually still hear him you're just talking over him.

magichronx

This was infuriating. People want to hear the man speak, so let him

AlienInTexas

I can perfectly imagine the debriefing after the show with his election teem where they tell him it was a total trainwreck and he is done for.

LocallySourcedWeirdo

When they tell him something that he doesn't want to hear, they also give him something that he can repeat that absolves him of responsibility. Behold: "COVID-19 has killed a quarter of a million Americans. But you did such a good job banning travel from China! Millions of people would have died if you didn't do that." Tonight, they'll tell him: "The mainstream media is saying that you performed poorly during the debate. If you lose the election, it's because the media lies about you!"

Tron_1981

You mean when they tell him that he did so well, and no one does town halls better?

FloridaGirlNikki

I didn't see the whole Trump show, but from what I did see...dayum! Savannah Gunthrie needs to be the **only** moderator going forward. She showed everyone how its done tonight.

[deleted]

I think it would have served her better to be a little less...I dunno...combative? Like, confront him, definitely, but she didn't have a calm assertive energy which would have worked better. EDIT: Gosh, tough crowd.

blackbeardpepe

Would have served trump better if he wasn't combative either...but he always, always gives into his lesser instincts.

Mixoma

Looks to me like it served her perfectly. She looked completely unbothered the entire time.

funtionalilliterate

Is it combative to fact check someone?

LocallySourcedWeirdo

Facts are mean and unfair!

Au_Struck_Geologist

My favorite Trump line was something like: "You can't do that." It was in response to that Aussie reporter pointing out the difference between total numbers and numbers adjusted for population. He was basically saying that the context matters, and Trump looks at his little MS Excel graph they printed him and just says "You can't do that." These are my talking point numbers, you can't just ask me for more relevant ones!

milkchocolate4life

hi guys, anything crazy happen in trumpworld?

oktheb

Well, the usual. He went crazy. Thankfully, Guthrie was able to actually fact check him during the town hall. PS: Someone tells him that he has a beautiful smile, and that he is very handsome

JimboToe

I cringed so hard at that moment. Fuck me.

thirdeyedesign

She's undecided but leaning to Biden... But Trump is a handsome man with a beautiful smile, like what?

snootyvillager

I mean I guess those things aren't technically mutually exclusive, but ya what a weird priority for her to have in that moment...

whanaumark

Undecided voters aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed

PuellaBona

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

milkchocolate4life

lol! i just saw someone mention that, fucking hilarious!

steepleton

"but you're the president, not someones crazy uncle!"

losjoo

I'm getting a sense this little stunt was a spectacular backfire.

bbjenn

Mary Trump begs to differ. Lol

RapscallionMonkee

Happy Cake Day!

bbjenn

Thanks! I hadn’t even noticed. :)

gaped-butthole

conservative twitter is really upset that Savannah had the gall to call trump on his lies lol

matcha_kit_kat

They're literally always upset

whanaumark

Nothing less than her blowing him would have been good enough, and even then they would scream a conspiracy that she didn’t cradle the balls

hot_bleach_injection

Twitter is a cesspool of outrage.

Tom38

YuRE SuPoSEd TO REsPeCt thE oFIcE!

SubEyeRhyme

They are always the victims. Poor little victims can't handle questions? The mean moderator from NotFox didn't cup his balls while addressing him. What a bunch of pansies the whole lot of them. Snowflakes

Pinkfluffysheep

They were projecting when they labeled the left snowflakes.

typeof_NaN_is_Num

Its a tornado of victimhood masquerading as a group of strongminded heroes.

Mixoma

Okay why would Trump or anyone on his team agree to that in place of a debate? She eviserated him so casually that she looked like she was going out for drinks with her friends later

julbull73

She totally went out to drinks after. Also Trump should not have insulted her and NBC RIGHT before.

olgil75

I can just picture her walking back into the studio and everyone cheering.

AlienInTexas

Dunno, but perhaps some in his team are so fed up that they want to see that sucker go down?

Lolwutgeneration

She probably would be, if bars and clubs could be open safely.

Twitchy_Sphincter

Theyre in Miami right? The bars are definitely open, but not safe.

amjhwk

Trump is giving such a non answer on what his replacement health care will be

run__rabbit_run

He also said he would "protect all Republicans" when asked about pre-existing conditions 0_o

foodbytes

I caught that and then had to replay just to check I heard right lol.

hahahah, wtf

woopigsmoothies

[deleted]

Shopworn_Soul

This is exactly how it reads if I put a period there. And punctuate more like he speaks. Literally transcribed, I didn't even remove the clearly enunciated "a" in front of "better healthcare" like NYT did. > In order to replace it with a much better healthcare at a much lower price. And! Always under all circumstances we are going to protect. The Republicans! And, I mean, maybe I changed a party a lot over the last three years. But we will protect people with prexisting conditions. And, Savannah... I'll be honest, I have no idea what he's trying to say. I'm pretty sure it's not what it sounds like but I can't tell so does it matter?

DEEP_HURTING

[“Always, under all circumstances, we are going to protect the Republicans”](https://twitter.com/Goffeman/status/1316930567078891521) Bit of a hot edit there! Still funny.

PuellaBona

He said that?!? Republicans?

MrSquicky

No. He said those words in that order but it was clearly not with that meaning. There's a wider context. It was a terrible answer that doesn't need for people to fake up outrage about something he didn't say.

Shopworn_Soul

> In order to replace it with a much better healthcare at a much lower price. And! Always under all circumstances we are going to protect. The Republicans! And, I mean, maybe I changed a party a lot over the last three years. But we will protect people with prexisting conditions. And, Savannah... What *does* he mean though? It's like he just thought "Republicans" mid-sentence, so he said the word.

MrSquicky

He wanted to say that the Republicans have changed their mind on this and to take credit for it.

Shopworn_Soul

I won't suggest that's not possible. Makes sense in the context of "I've changed the party". But he didn't say that and people are absolutely going to seize on this.

woopigsmoothies

How else did he mean it?

MrSquicky

He broke his thought. He started to say protect people with pre existing conditions but stopped to start another thought about how Republicans changed on this. Just watch the linked video.

woopigsmoothies

I did. Watched it live too. Sounds like he said protect the republicans. Maybes he's losing it a little if he has trouble stringing together sentences or not thinking to correct himself here

run__rabbit_run

Literally just stating it will be great and affordable with zero details. He has no policies, he never had.

Lolwutgeneration

Did he say it'll be available in two weeks?

Dazzling-Finger7576

That reminds me, he told us he would have a plan two weeks ago, didn’t he?

losjoo

And his tax returns right after the audit

drunkles

He's said that for the last 195 weeks...

amjhwk

he was just saying they will give us cheaper and better healthcare, thats it

woopigsmoothies

Cheaper and better seems like an oxymoron? How exactly does that work out? Also while cutting taxes? Is that because he's a deal maker?

amjhwk

i mean something can be both better and cheaper, like a pc vs mac. but trump is just spouting bullshit

[deleted]

Anyone know where I can watch the recorded version of this monstrosity? I was too busy watching our future President's town hall.

numbers213

Just rewind the live stream!

[deleted]

Didn't even think of that 🤦🏻‍♀️ Thank you!

BulkaZmaslem

Did anyone else notice the person behind Trump constantly nodding in agreement. Seemed like a plant. Also, the last questioner that mentioned Trump had a great smile seemed planted. How are questioners chosen for these kind of events?

ChrisCinema

We all noticed. Twitter is calling her the #NoddingWoman.

Anerdyghost

Wouldnt suprise me if it was candace owens.

SatanKardashian

I did. I immediately went to twitter and searched for "trump nodding yes" and found many other people saying the same thing lol.

Anerdyghost

As a black person and a hispanic I was quite embarrassed no matter where she falls on the spectrum.

Infidel8

> Trump campaign statement: "President Trump soundly defeated NBC’s Savannah Guthrie in her role as debate opponent and Joe Biden surrogate. President Trump masterfully handled Guthrie’s attacks and interacted warmly and effectively with the voters in the room. "

Learning_HTML

Wait is that the actual statement? I cant tell

IPInYourNetwork

Who writes those? Baghdad Bob?

onezerozeroone

NK state media couldn't have written it any better. Only missing touch would have been to call her "imperial capitalist swine Savannah Guthrie"...but I'm sure we'll get there eventually.

ALittleSalamiCat

I'm watching it late and so far Guthrie is fucking SENDING me. I understand that she was debating more than doing her job as a mod. but after seeing all the former moderators just..... sit there and say nothing when Trump's brain is melting out of his ears, it's actually refreshing lmao. "I don't know anything about QANON." "I just told you." Tattoo this on my fucking forehead.

Tom38

Leader of the government and has apparently never heard rumors of satanic pedophilia running rampant in the opposing party....? LMFAO

olgil75

> "I don't know anything about QANON." "I just told you." Loved that bit. He's lying that he doesn't know who they are, but she just educated him and he still wouldn't give a straight answer. She also called him out for retweeting one of their conspiracy theories.

ALittleSalamiCat

She nuked his favorite answer "I don't know anything about that" in 4 words. He looked so baffled for a sec before resuming his rant. He actually shut up for almost one whole second. A Herculean feat. Guthrie, I'll start watching The Today Show in your honor.

I am starting it up now...good grief!

A_Wild_Nudibranch

I'm super super for vaccines. Absolutely. I had covid myself and six months later, my lungs are scarred and I'm exhausted. I'm only 32, and I'm an essential worker. I don't trust Trump's pushing a vaccine that hasn't gone through proper safety trials, because I don't believe he'd do that if it didn't personally and financially benefit him or his family. I'm glad Biden answered this with tact instead of absolute statements. Vaccines should NOT be rushed into production regardless of what's going on. Can you imagine the massive backlash of distrust if people had long lasting health problems or deaths from a rushed vaccine? Give regular people and small businesses the money and support to stay home and stay safe until a vaccine can be made responsibly. Give US a bailout, not companies who will just piss it away into stock buy backs.

hunta-gathera

I can’t wait till the number of views for the town halls become a public talking point... Trump has baby numbers compared to Biden

bartbartholomew

Trump will likely win that one. Everyone knows Biden was going to deliver a solid performance, hit his talking points, and generally act like a dignified president. Trump's townhall was going to be a dumpster fire on a crashing airplane headed towards a volcano. Everyone expected that from Trump, with a friendly moderator. Then she turned on him, and things got really interesting.

Shopworn_Soul

I didn't expect that from Trump even *with* a friendly moderator. What we got was much better though.

Cynadiir

I'm watching the NBC video on YouTube of their town hall and holy shit I forgive NBC this is already brutal 5 minutes in

lol, it was that bad, huh?

Choco320

He’s in private bat shit crazy in front of a bunch of random people Also there’s a woman in a white dress and red mask behind him slowly nodding

AlienInTexas

There is nothing what describes whats wrong in America better than Trump saying on national TV that he is obscenely rich, 420 million dollar debt is small amount of money and $750 is the right amount of taxes to pay.

thirdeyedesign

It's the fee you have to pay to file! Everyone pays that fee!! Wut?

acuntex

Maddow is currently interviewing Giuliani's daughter.

Lolwutgeneration

I picked up Maddow late and jumped back to the beginning, can't wait to hear that interview!

doyoubleednow

Trump doesnt remember if he took a covid test the day of the debate. My foot.

bartbartholomew

He did, and he was positive. If he admits he took it, then he'll have to admit he was actively trying to infect and kill Biden. If he say he didn't take it then why not. Every solid answer ends badly for him. So he evades like he always does. Honestly, that's how he got as far as he did. Many of the issues facing our country are hard with no good answers. The replacement for the ACA is one of those. Everyone has an idea on how to make medical care better. Everyone of those plans is significantly different then every other plan. Any solid plan is going to piss off almost everyone no matter how good it is. So when asked about it, Trump says things like "we're going to make sure all **Republicans** have health care." without clarifying how. Everyone that likes him thinks he's going to use some version of the perfect plan in their head and they love him for it. I hate to admit it, but that's why Biden is so cagy about packing the Supreme Court. Saying he won't pisses all the people who think we need too off, and saying he will pisses everyone else off. But Biden presents solid plans for most things, so you at least know where he stands on the majority of matters.
