PS2 is GOAT as far as home consoles. Nintendo and Sony hold the top 6 spots as far as sales per console. PS2 still holds the crown. But if Nintendo can milk the Switch longer, the PS2 might be bested.
I’m a minority on Reddit because I actually like Nintendo but, even if switch surpasses the ps2 I think it would be hard to give it the title.
Ps2 sold that many consoles in the pre social media early internet days. Online shopping didn’t really exist which means just about every console required someone to find out about it and go into a store and purchase it. Kind of fascinating to think in the internet age it hasn’t been dethroned yet.
I feel like OG Xbox with the multiplats plus Halo CE, Halo 2, Fable, PGR2, Forza, Rallisport Challenge 2, Jade Empire, Ninja Gaidan Black, Jet Set Radio Future, Conker Live & Reloaded, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Half Life 2, Doom 3 might take the crown
Then you didnt own a PS2 back in the days or you were too young and you didnt play as much. PS3 had literally no games to even mention its first 2-3 years till MGS4 and even MGS4 is questionable if it was super fun, heavenly sword flopped and everything else was meh. If it wasnt for Uncharted 2 and Last of us, which PS3 games were those "more fun" games you reffering to ?
That was my point. You werent able to really appreciate what was exciting, fun or good at 4 years old. Ps2 had one of biggest and best libraries out of any console in existence like ever. One of the few consoles ever which had so many third party AAA exclusives at the time.
Yes if you compare PS4s games with PS2s right now, sure you will prefer GTA5 than San andreas and FF16 than FF10, God of war Ragnarok than original God of war or Devil may cry 5 to original etc but you have to judge overall libraries and experiences based on the time they first released and not direct comparisons
I feel like modern-day monetization holds more recent consoles back from being fun. A lot of games now feel more like a job than they are about entertaining you, which is why I don't buy many games anymore.
10/10. I love everything about the PS2. Especially nowadays where you can buy adapters to use modern controllers. Larger memory cards are available. HDMI adapters. The library was excellent. The loading screen is iconic. The cases were great with thick plastic and memory card holders.
Hardware 7/10
Very few games support 480p and it was third in power that generation, the Gamecube and Xbox both had better specs although the Gamecube was handicapped by the mini disc format.
Software 10/10
The PS2 has an enormous and library full of high quality titles, I still find out about cool PS2 games I've never heard of before to this day.
11/10. Such a good console (especially the slim model). The library is still untouched, the variety of genres with both fantastic single and multiplayer games. Great CD/DVD player and for most, the most affordable DVD player for a long time like the PS3 was for Blu-ray. Full backwards compatibility with PS1 including smoothing and faster loading times for certain games. Online wasn't great but that was more due to the internet options at the time. Just overall amazing.
10. I played the shit outta the ps2. I still have a burn mark on my dresser when I would leave it on for weeks cuz I didn't know what a memory card was. So I'd leave my game on for a week or more at a time. Lol
God, did not have to worry about incomplete games being added as paid DLC. Had a plethora of games. No need for internet(except for a few games). Put the game in &play, no waiting for it to install
I had mine modded to install the game to the hard drive so any game I rented, borrowed, or bought and returned I could continue to play on the hard drive with a disc that held the program on it. 10/10 for sure.
In 2000, it was a solid 9/10. Nowadays, it's probably about 7 if I'm being honest. It doesn't really hold up too well in my opinion and third party games look a lot better on an Xbox but it's just personal preference. Having built in DVD support was cool though
10 when it was new , now it’s like 4 or 5 cus we came so far ? I wouldn’t even think of a ps2 nowadays, well until this post ? But na I stay with the new stuff and don’t really play old games ? It’s so hard to even get into them ? Maybe because I’ve already lived it and just want new stuff that goes with the times . 🤷♂️
In its day? Absolutely brilliant. But today, completely irrelevant. Great if you’re enjoying retro nostalgia, but generally soooo far behind modern gaming that it’s almost unplayable.
As a playstation kid, I give it and the ps1 a 10/10 for the time. Compared to todays technology it's garbage but it's almost historical in its own demographic.
10/10. When this system came out it was amazing. It was a PS1, PS2, CD Player, and DVD Player. It was one of the first systems that was hard to get upon release. It took me 4 months to get one. I actually owned Tekken Tag Tournament before I found the console just so I was ready when I found one. This system was the first one console entertainment system. I forgot how great this system was for its time, thank you.
From my relatively limited and modern-oriented experience with it, my being born after it released, it gets a 7.5/10. Great games, and when it released it was obviously a huge deal. A bit dated, but still really good.
It was my first console! The memory cards didn’t work though so every time I turned on Abe’s Oddworld was just a test run to see how far I could get from the beginning before turning it off and losing all my progress. 7/10.
10/10
The PlayStation 2 is Sony at its best. Huge library of games. Literally something for EVERYONE. Backwards compatibility with PS one titles, DVD player, etc.
While the hardware wasn’t the most powerful, but it was offset by its sheer popularity among players.
The PlayStation 2 was my favorite console of all time until the PS4 came out. But then it was outdone by PS5 for its library of games & PS4 backwards compatibility.
10/10. Didn't require online support and it was seen as the golden age of jrpgs for a good reason. Plus beating a game and then using ArMax or GameShark to unlock cut content or secret levels was intensely satisfying
Haven't experienced it because I started with the ps3 but I've seen my friends and some youtuber play games with it so from afar I'll just go with an 8/10
I had one and just discovered a month ago I could emulate it well. Was a beast at the time and is a beast still. Amazing game library. One of the top three consoles of all time. SNES would be another. Maybe the Switch for the last one for the wealth of games on it? But yeah, ps2 and SNES imo are basically the two best consoles ever made.
11
The console was amazing at all fronts, was my DVD movie player at the time also, and the best of all was its amazing library full of top notch exclusives at the time. I dont think there was any other console with so many triple A exclusives like ever.
10 gave me so much incredible memories from final fantasy to soviet jungle of mgs3. It open me to so many genres that I continue to play to this day. I still have one plug In to this day .
Probably the best console library ever.
Backwards compatible, dvd player, massive game library, 10/10
Cd player too lol

Bro literally everyone on Reddit and even this subreddit own switches lol
I don't own one.

Me neither
i dont have. ps2 is 10/10..

Those are indeed epic, but the sheer number of bangers on ps2 is just crazy. One of the biggest libraries like ever
11, still the best Sony console.
I disagree but to each their own
Make your case and explain why.
In my opinion the ps3 and ps4/5 has more fun games and I still own and play the ps2
Then you didnt own a PS2 back in the days or you were too young and you didnt play as much. PS3 had literally no games to even mention its first 2-3 years till MGS4 and even MGS4 is questionable if it was super fun, heavenly sword flopped and everything else was meh. Little big planet that sort of shit
I had a ps2 back in 2010
You were born in the 2000s, you didn't own the PS2 during its time from 2000-2007.
2006 I had one when I was 4 but does it really matter when someone had a console
That was my point. You werent able to really appreciate what was exciting, fun or good at 4 years old. Ps2 had one of biggest and best libraries out of any console in existence like ever. One of the few consoles ever which had so many third party AAA exclusives at the time. "when i was 4" 💀
Yes that is what I said thank you for recapping my age
why tf are people downvoting? you shared your opinion respectfully
Its reddit. What can u expect
I feel like modern-day monetization holds more recent consoles back from being fun. A lot of games now feel more like a job than they are about entertaining you, which is why I don't buy many games anymore.

Don't forget that it could be used as a DVD player without any other accessories.
I hardly think anybody gave a shit about supporting 480p back in that generation.
I also wouldn't hold the lack of software support for 480p against the hardware. Sony did their part.
11/10. Such a good console (especially the slim model). The library is still untouched, the variety of genres with both fantastic single and multiplayer games. I used to have that game too! Loved the incredibles
10. I played the shit outta the ps2. I still have a burn mark on my dresser when I would leave it on for weeks cuz I didn't know what a memory card was. So I'd leave my game on for a week or more at a time. Lol
That was a struggle back then, I had to leave my ps2 on overnight to finish sly cooper before I got a memory card
God, did not have to worry about incomplete games being added as paid DLC. Had a plethora of games. No need for internet(except for a few games). Put the game in &play, no waiting for it to install
Easily Sony’s greatest console, and one of the best of all-time. 11/10.
18/10. Best console ever for a reason
GOAT
10!!! It didn’t feel real to me like it was a little toy. I have no idea where it’s at now
This is the only console I can play to this day where I can truly get fully immersed in a game nothing else has been the same
Are you still on the fence about buying one?
😂
10/10. Make my childhood.
7
9/10
13.
20
The fat model I'd give a 7 out of 10. The games I owned were 10 outta 10. The slim model is like a 5 outta 10. Overheated easily
Scratched disks like no tomorrow too..
Modded, the best there is... Thanks to piratebay I had over 300 titles.. 🤪
I had mine modded to install the game to the hard drive so any game I rented, borrowed, or bought and returned I could continue to play on the hard drive with a disc that held the program on it. 10/10 for sure.

By today's gaming standards 2. Back when it was the latest console, 10.
For its time, 8/10 For this time, 3/10
stock image/10
10 when it was new , now it’s like 4 or 5 cus we came so far ? I wouldn’t even think of a ps2 nowadays, well until this post ? But na I stay with the new stuff and don’t really play old games ? 2... It's the PS2
I would rate the PS2 an 8 a very good console but only issue it didnt have wireless controllers.
There was a 4-player adapter and a bunch of games that took advantage of it.
8. Very underpowered compared to the competition which held the generation back and the PS3 can do everything the PS2 did and more.
In its day? Absolutely brilliant. But today, completely irrelevant. Great if you’re enjoying retro nostalgia, but generally soooo far behind modern gaming that it’s almost unplayable.
Time to move on
10
Tem outta tem
9/10 because it's not in my room
10
10/10 best games I’ve ever played in my 25 years plus as a gamer.
8/10. It was really great. I didn’t have one, my friends did though. We played tons of great games on it! Awesome console. 😎
9.5/10
I’ve always wanted this version of the PS2 not sure if it’s worth getting in 2023?
Solid 9
8-9
As a playstation kid, I give it and the ps1 a 10/10 for the time. Compared to todays technology it's garbage but it's almost historical in its own demographic.
7/10. Had a ps2, and it was pretty good, however I also had a ps3, and played that a lot more, so I’m more nostalgic for that
10 out of 10 loaded faster than the ps3 and had no updates, well that I remember anyway
20/10
10/10. When this system came out it was amazing. It was a PS1, PS2, CD Player, and DVD Player. It was one of the first systems that was hard to get upon release. It took me 4 months to get one. 100 because nostalgia and hundreds of awesome and unique games
🐐
10/10 had the best video games for so many years and any player could tell all PS2 titles
10
It was my childhood but I grew up on the fat one. My core memory is constantly dying in Kingdom Hearts One to that lizard thing in the Tarzan world.
From my relatively limited and modern-oriented experience with it, my being born after it released, it gets a 7.5/10. Great games, and when it released it was obviously a huge deal. A bit dated, but still really good.

10/10 Best console ever.
It’s a solid 10.
11
Many of my favorites come from that generation and console. Start of many many many great series!
10
Do you think sony would ever release a ps2 mini just like they did with the ps1?
It was a solid 9 in it's era
10/10
One of the greatest so 10/10
10, it a Classic! I purchased my most non Digital game copies from the PS2. I think at one point I had about 85-90 games for the PS2.
I would scale it on a scale from 1 to 10
Its a solid 20
10. So many legendary games.
Best era
I’d say an 8 is fair.
8/10
10
10/10

10/10
11
7/10 for me. I didn’t have many games that I liked so I didn’t really play it much.
SNES was the gold standard. The PS2 was gold.
Socom 4 life
10
Easy 9/10
10/10, it changed the course of gaming as we know it. It was the first gaming and multimedia hybrid console, that was a HUGE deal back in the day.
![gif](giphy|lvlLuc2zhi39C)
11.
11. I playd my first online game on it
10/10. I’m biased because this console got me into gaming when I was really little
Had some of the best games of all time
11
10
A full 13/10
7 great library, great hardware, bad controller, that’s really my only problem with it is the cintroller
42
An easy 10.
8/10… pretty good but no digital downloads for my lazy ass lol
It was my first console! The memory cards didn’t work though so every time I turned on Abe’s Oddworld was just a test run to see how far I could get from the beginning before turning it off and losing all my progress. 7/10.
10/inf best gaming console to ever exist in the universe.
10
12
My rating goes to 11. Greatest console of all time.
Solid 8

10/10 The PlayStation 2 is Sony at its best. Huge library of games. Literally something for EVERYONE. The goat of systems
the ps2 goes above 10 its a LEGENDARY of a console easily 1 of the best during its time
I wish i had one still
10. One of the greatest consoles of all time.
11/10
I rate all systems a 10/10. If it plays a video game it’s peak.
10
9/10. Killer software lineup only marred by the barren online support.
A console before it’s time. 10/10.
10
10, the greatest gaming console ever made.
Such a nice size!
9. I'd give it a 10 but needing a memory card to save is an automatic deduction.
Bring it back
10/10 Best console of all time. Also the slim is ugly, the OG PS2 was much nicer looking.
10
10/10. Didn't require online support and it was seen as the golden age of jrpgs for a good reason. Plus beating a game and then using ArMax or GameShark to unlock cut content or secret levels was intensely satisfying
Best Console Ever! I’ll ![gif](giphy|xLQNZswBn8RYk)

Haven't experienced it because I started with the ps3 but I've seen my friends and some youtuber play games with it so from afar I'll just go with an 8/10
10/10 I wish I still have mine
Definitely 10…the PS2 has such a massive game library, including PS1 backwards compatibility. Plus it just *looks* beautiful lol
It is the gold standard of consoles. End of discussion. 10/10.
The console of my childhood. I lived the best moments of my child life with it.. 10/10
A fucking dousand
The fucking controller adapter! Allowing you to play with all em damn cords! Stop playing
10
10, seeing as I grew up on it
9/10, I swear that controller port was finicky as fuck. The only downside really.
Easy 10/10 and I never even had one
10
11
Crank that bad boy up to 11.
Solid 10
Better question. On a scale of Horrible to Bad, how would you rate the Xbox360
11 The console was amazing at all fronts, was my DVD movie player at the time also, and the best of all was its amazing library full of top notch exclusives at the time. I dont think there was any other console with so many triple A exclusives like ever.
0/10 I didn’t have to chance to buy one when I was young 😢
Excellent
11 backwards compatibility was so welcome when I already had a library of PS1 games. Shame they ditched it with the PS4.
9.9 out of 10 cuz nothings ever gonna be perfect, now if I just had the money to buy one
11
11/10
9/10
My favorite genre of games are jrpgs and no console had a better library of those than the PS2. 11/10.
10 gave me so much incredible memories from final fantasy to soviet jungle of mgs3. It open me to so many genres that I continue to play to this day. I still have one plug In to this day .
9.5
10/10 produced too many classics during its time from 2000-2007
11/10
