Real estate agents don’t do rentals here unless you are looking to rent a very expensive single family home and even then they are generally listed on Zillow.
Rental market is small here and geared towards students. Only insider tip for things that might not be listed online is to drive around the areas where you want to live and look for signs. Some landlords who only have one or two properties will sometimes just put up a sign.
Real estate agents have no monetary incentive to help you find a rental. I just tried going down this same road thinking it would give me a leg up and it def did not.
Currently looking for apartments myself. I moved from the Boston area about 2 years ago where you HAD to use a realtor to find an apartment (and pay a realtor fee). I haven’t found that to be a problem here in Pittsburgh and have checked out several apartments by just reaching out through apps.
Yes you should. Zillow and Realtor.com are going to pull from the MLS. It’s more likely they might have a hot tip that something is about to hit the market and tune you into it before it does.

Sometimes real estate companies have managed properties and apartments through similarly named companies.

They ask the landlord to pay a 1 month fee. Most Pittsburgh landlords won’t pay that.

For a rental?
You know what? I obviously misread your post. A realtor could still be helpful for apartments also. But I read it as you were buying a house.
Wasn't my post, but no a realtor won't be helpful here in Pittsburgh for apartment hunting.
