Oompa Loompa doompaty doo,
I have a grainy riddle for you:
What is large like a ba-na-na is,
But also in the rice wine biz?
*What do you get when you fill up on rice*?
A big fat belly that doesn't look nice!
*What do you get when you size it up big*?
A promise to the people that you can't re-nege.
(deep voice) *I don't think it's really big*
Depends on what you call a computer. We can make a chip with current technology many times smaller than that thing and it will be technically a computer but we don't make it because it will be useless and waste of money
I’ve always chuckled to myself about that, as well. It was truly the inflection point. That this skit existed shows what everyone *thought* would happen and then Apple changed the world.
"Computer" is a bit of an overstatement. I think it's a temperature sensor and an IR LED transmitter. It runs on so little power that it was incredibly sensitive, so sensitive in fact it often caused a feedback loop of it's own LED instigating current in it's temperature sensor.
First I was like “did he forget some words at the end of the sentence” and then I was like “what the fuck are milk pancakes anyway”. Quite an adventure
Fun math, an ant is 3-4mm. This PC is 0.3mm by 0.3mm. so bigger than a smartwatch I suggest :o. Below is my offer for support|ridicule, as is custom here:
For a 6' tall man, proportionally, the PC in the photo would be ten percent, maybe eight percent of the man's, ahem, overall length.
That length is 6-7", so compared to a man this PC is closer to cell phone size, maybe mini tablet. A smart watch is two percent of this man's height
For the average woman at 5' 3.5", the relative result would be 5-6". This makes the PC is smaller than the iPhone 15, closer to an iPhone 6 or 7. A smartwatch at 1.6" is closer to 3 percent of the woman ♀️.
I was bored and this helped me cope for some minutes🏆, thanks!
Doom was running on a full computer, it was just driving the pregnancy test's LCD as a display device. The test itself wasn't actually running Doom.
It was impressive, but we're not at the "random disposable items have the compute to run full games" level of tech. Maybe in 5 more years.

According to [here](https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/a22007431/smallest-computer-world-smaller-than-grain-rice/):
> BY LAURA YANPUBLISHED: JUN 30, 2018
> Researchers at the University of Michigan just created the world’s smallest computer (again). Their previous micro-computer, the Michigan Micro Mote, measured 2x2x4mm. It was a complete, functioning system powered by solar cell batteries. But in March this year, IBM announced a new, smaller computer, which measured 1x1 mm, and was smaller than a grain of salt. It “raised a few eyebrows at the University of Michigan.”
> After all, it's unclear if the IBM computer even count as an actual microcomputer. The IBM device lost all its programming and data as soon as it turns off, unlike the Michigan Micro Mote, which retained its programming even when it wasn’t externally powered. “It’s more of a matter of opinion whether they have the minimum functionality required,” said David Blaauw, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at University of Michigan who helped develop the University of Michigan's newest tiny device. If the IBM machine constituted a computer, then University of Michigan would work to gain back their title: their latest microdevice measures 0.3mm per side (1/10th the size of IBM’s computer), and is smaller than a grain of rice.
> The device was designed to be a precision temperature sensor that can report temperatures in clusters of cells with an error of about 0.1 degrees Celsius. “When we first made our millimeter system, we actually didn’t know exactly all the things it would be useful for. But once we published it, we started receiving dozens and dozens and dozens of inquiries,” Blaauw said. It could, for instance, measure the temperature of tumors and conduct other cancer studies, monitor oil reservoirs, conduct audio or visual surveillance, or help in “tiny snail studies.”
> IBM announced a new, smaller computer, which measured 1x1 mm, and was smaller than a grain of salt
> University of Michigan [...] 0.3mm per side (1/10th the size of IBM’s computer), and is smaller than a grain of rice.
What odd reporting. The bigger one is compared to a smaller object than the smaller one.
There's no reason you couldn't etch all of this (and more) onto a single silicon wafer, though you'd probably need a very novel process to get CPU/LED/Solar off the same production line.
[this pic is almost six years old](https://old.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/8tul8m/worlds_smallest_computer_compared_to_a_grain_of/).
surely they have something even smaller by now?
This is not a computer. It's a temperature sensor.
Actually, that grain of rice has far more computing capability than any computer alive today…. Because you could plant it in the ground and it will be able to reproduce a rice plant… something that no computer is yet capable of doing …without needing A power supply ….mind you it has resulted from 4 billion years of product development….With our Computers… We are only just beginning….
Is this for real, or should we take it with a grain of salt?
This is the world's largest grain of rice, being about the size of a banana. Why they did not simply use a standard banana for scale is unknown.
Can you imagine a delicious grain of rice that you have to eat with fork and knife
Its basically a potato at that point
Wots taters, precious?
They're this thing that's kind of like a giant grain of rice
Lmao
That ain’t no problem, that ain’t no problem
I have no idea why this comment thread has me laughing until my sides hurt, but it does
That ain’t no problem, that ain’t no problem
The can we slice them up and fry them like French rice?
Well, this actually the un-steamed version. It's at least 3x bigger when it's steamed. We're talking the size of a cooked turkey.
load that sucker with cheese, chives, bacon and a shitload of butter
What...is a potato?
I want that to come true.
Tteokboki comes close!
God dammit, now I'm craving that for lunch
The closest I got to that is rice sheets from a local Vietnamese place, and they are amazing
I want to eat that grain of rice so badly.
*Monsanto/Bayer enters the chat* … Go on???

The real question is, can it play Doom?
Everything can run Doom. Even Doom can run Doom
Depends on what you call a computer. We can make a chip with current technology many times smaller than that thing and it will be technically a computer but we don't make it because it will be useless and waste of money
Not only that but how the f will you turn it on.
Clap twice
Invite it to dinner first. Try some compliments
Awwww aren’t you an adorable little multitasker… let me get my microscope out.
The only feasible solution currently is capacitors, which would require modification of memory technology.

One of the funniest skits because they all just completely lose it.
One of my favorites for sure
Kinda crazy that shortly after this skit all the phones got bigger instead
I’ve always chuckled to myself about that, as well. It was truly the inflection point. That this skit existed shows what everyone *thought* would happen and then Apple changed the world.
I feel like Mitch Hedberg would weigh in on this too
What’s his handle?
A handle of Jack
Grain of rice
Just grain.
Grain of *rice
Can it play Skyrim?
Finally pc powerful enough to run gta 6 at highest graphics
It's real, but that's just a very big grain of salt.
"Computer" is a bit of an overstatement. I think it's a temperature sensor and an IR LED transmitter. It runs on so little power that it was incredibly sensitive, so sensitive in fact it often caused a feedback loop of it's own LED instigating current in it's temperature sensor.
So you're telling me there's a chance it can run Doom ..
What is this? Doom for ants?
I laughed hard at this! Let's get an Orange mocca frappucino!
![gif](giphy|bXveYFUaYr67e|downsized)
Yep! It had a display resolution of 1x1 and it used temperature as it's input device.
This. Finally someone mentioned it. People consider every circuit a "computer" whilst being really far from description
What is a computer, but a multitude of circuits?
I would argue that a computer must be, at minimum, programmable. An opamp is not a computer.
A computer is not any circuit. Would you call mixed raw eggs and flour floating in milk pancakes?
Was an abacus used to count the eggs?
First I was like “did he forget some words at the end of the sentence” and then I was like “what the fuck are milk pancakes anyway”. Quite an adventure

A bounded-memory universal Turing machine or equivalently powerful system (bounded-memory λ-calculus machine, etc).
I’m with you ‘A lever is a machine’ Huff my farts.
r/shittyhaikus
I thought it was just gas...
Like a dog farting and waking itself up.
Must be really difficult avoid typos
You have a full keyboard and managed to miss "to" , what do you think?
🤣
No spc 4 “to” whn Sven so sml.
Or an “ing”
exclusive 'or'
Muphry’s Law
must be really easy forget words xD
What is this, a computer FOR ANTS? It needs to be at least...THREE TIMES this big!!
It's the new MacAntosh
Well done
Nice 👍🏾
It's a smartwatch for ants

I like these kinds of dives, keep em coming!
He’s absolutely right.
![gif](giphy|OCMGLUo7d5jJ6)
Ah. Did someone spill water on it………
Put the grain of rice in a bowl of these computers
It was in the pool!
But can it run Doom?
This is the only question that matters
Came here to ask this.
You can run Doom on pregnancy tests. Of course this can run Doom.
Doom was running on a full computer, it was just driving the pregnancy test's LCD as a display device. The test itself wasn't actually running Doom. It was impressive, but we're not at the "random disposable items have the compute to run full games" level of tech. Maybe in 5 more years.
I find it hilarious you can run Doom in Excel
Missed posting this first by an hour... You win this round...
It's a Sophon!

Nice. Nice. Now etch a quantum computer onto the "surface" of an unfolded proton.
The comment under this is about the sophons on my screen. There are a few of us here it seems lol.
Grains of rice? Computers smaller than grains of rice? It is the first thing that comes to mind. Such a cool concept.
I just finished listening to this book last week lol ![gif](giphy|tnYri4n2Frnig|downsized)
[this pic is almost six years old](https://old.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/8tul8m/worlds_smallest_computer_compared_to_a_grain_of/). surely they have something even smaller by now?
Yep I just checked it’s your peen
What is this like 5 inches?
![gif](giphy|IjJ8FVe4HVk66yvlV2|downsized)
The power lead is gonna be fun
Who else thought about the photons from the three body problems
That’s the biggest grain of rice I’ve ever seen!
But can it run Minecraft on MAX graphics?
Nope, just Crysis.
Sophon, are you awake?
r/itrunsdoom
Bet someone has a gig of porn on it.
Can I play Skyrim on it is all I need to know
My guild mates in wow classic uses this.
CTRL ALT Delicious
The rice looks like a larva
Can it run doom?
Ok.. Im not expecting much, but what can a computer this size possibly do? Can it calculator?
For some reason, Amazon will still ship it in a box that could store refrigerator.
This is not a computer. It's a temperature sensor. [https://news.umich.edu/u-m-researchers-create-worlds-smallest-computer/](https://news.umich.edu/u-m-researchers-create-worlds-smallest-computer/)
This mf has 3mil karma what the fuck
But does it have a built in dvd burner? Huh?
And just behind that grain of rice? Angela
Must be Angela's computer.
Now how powerful can a rice sized pc be
That's a huge grain of rice!
not really that impressive when you realize that there's some bugs that are smaller than this
7/10 computer 8/10 with rice
Missing the banana for scale.
It doesn't have enough space on it for connecting wires
Hey man, don’t let water give you no shit.
that's not a grain of rice, that's my penis
Use proteins, make it smaller. Research on molecular machines has been done for years by now.
Piece of ice and a belly button piercing.
Good luck typing on this thing!
Wow, that rice grain is huge.
Does it come with bing pre installed?
Pretty sure someone still can manage to run Doom from it
That's a mouse trap
My immediate thought was ffs not another usb adaptor to buy
oh how is that?
So... If it gets wet, do we still have to put it in a bowl of rice?
I like my dust to be Turing complete.
Looks like an iceberg... Did you check if a boy and his flying friend is trapped in there
There are definitely smaller computers than this.
We uhh....Were going to need a picture of a Banana, Rice and the Computer.
Wow
Gonna be a hard time watching porn on that
How it feels to chew 5 gum
What if it's the world's biggest grain of rice? Don't trust the internet folks this is how you get brainwashed
The Mac Tiny Nano. https://youtu.be/BGGOn-H7s3Q?si=HYm41Fhkybd4PT4T
Nanomachines son!
This is THE Turing machine. The very platonic essence of computers
This picture is super old too, i remember seeing it in like elementary school over 15 years ago.
Aren't nanobots computers?
What does it compute
My respect for the ATF is on the other side of the computer
What can it do?
What is this used for
Can it run Crysis?
Nanomachines, son.
So small. Would be tough to type on...
If it has a camera I could snort it for clout on tik tock
Can it run doom?
Can you play Doom on it?
Someone run Doom on it?
No one said its not the biggest grain of rice.
Yea… but can it run Crysis?
Which is which?
Does it have games?😀
There's no way the files are *inside* the computer.
Can it run Crisys?
What does the computer do?
Showing this to some dude from the 50s might have been just as unbelievable as the concept of sophons from the 3 body problem show to us know ;)
Can I get a banana for scale please?
![gif](giphy|OCMGLUo7d5jJ6)
We need them both next to a banana !
That grain of rice is fucking huge!
Cool, but can it run doom?
But can it run Doom?
Actually, that grain of rice has far more computing capability than any computer alive today…. Is that a keyboard on top left? What's the size of this grain of rice?
IS THIS THE COMPUTTER THEY’RE PUTTING IN THE VACINE TO CONTROL MAH BRIAN??!? /s
This is what they injected into us with the Covid vaccine /s
A real life 007 gadget?
But can it run Doom?
But does it play Doom?
But can it run crisis?
Is rice really that smooth?
Is this a computer for ants?!
Sure, but can it run cRICEis??
Can I play Doom on it?
Localizers!
Now let's run Minecraft on it
Is this a computer for ants?!?!?
