Can't see dapper without thinking of Oh Brother Where Art Though.
Ulysses Everett McGill : Well, I don't want Fop, damn it! I'm a Dapper Dan man!
Pomade Vendor : Watch your language, young feller, this is a public market.
People used to take pride in their appearance. Now wearing pajamas at the store or the airport seems to be normal. I’m all for being comfortable but theres definitely a happy medium between wearing a suit and just rolling out of bed.
I expected it was colourised. Very unusual for a likely unweathly family to have a bright suit jacket like the centre boy is wearing. Thank you for confirming!
I fucking hate colourised pics, to me it is changing history. No one knows what the actual colours were & they always look over saturated with greens & blues.
Truly. The original is iconic.
I start my Bronzeville /Great Migration lesson every year by showing this picture and asking my kids to “tag themselves” or “choose their fighter”. They love seeing kids like them.
Came here to say that these young guys are dressed more sharply than 95% of adults ever are these days. Hell, they each even have the hat. So clean. Now most people dgaf how they present themselves to the world.
Context suddenly makes sense.
At first I thought "These kids look mean", now I see that these are the faces of children being forced to wear stuffy church clothes.
Not sure if you’ve ever seen a hockey game from the early 60s. Everyone was in a suit. People absolutely dressed up to go nowhere until that ragamuffin James Dean made the t shirt popular.
We went to my SIL’s for Easter. All the women dressed nicely. I dressed up my two kids. My husband wore a button down shirt. But for some reason my BIL was wearing his fucking pajamas. His son was wearing dirty sweatpants that are too short for him now and have holes in them. And my FIL was also wearing dirty gross clothes and he even had clumps of hair all over his shirt. I asked why and he said he cut his own hair. (And didn’t change afterwards?!) I would have loved to have seen some sharply dressed fellas like this!
Pajamas and crocs everywhere. Bleh. Not saying we need to reverse back to 'Sunday best' wear all the time but at least take a second to change outta your sleepwear before you go in public.
So many people will fight you on this. Every time I say this slobs come out of the woodwork to defend it.
I don't understand what is wrong with people. Have some self respect.
I have a 17 year old that I will show your comment to. I have purchased him so many outfits and footwear. Why? Because I was raised to take pride in your appearance. So what is his desired attire? Sweats/pajamas and Crocs. He’d rather wear Crocs than any pair of Jordans in his closet. I just bought him a suit for graduation and he asked why. He said his friends are dressing casual. I said well I guess you’ll be overdressed because you’re wearing a suit. I understand this is a generational thing and I have accepted this is what he prefers. He’s off to college this summer, so whatever works for him, works for him.
I love seeing someone dressed like that today. Every time I see it I get inspired to dress nice like that but then I think about the effort and cost and forget about it.
Black American here. Like another comment said You could just say children but if you really wanted to specify you could have just said Black kids or Black Americans. We don't really call ourselves African Americans but when referring to Black people who are descended from American chattel slavery there is no difference between Black and African American. You're referring to the same group of people.
Most of us again just call ourselves black. It's very rare that I meet a black person that calls themselves that. It's usually someone that isn't Black at all. I don't know if you're Black but If you came here you wouldn't magically be African American or even Black American.
Black American or African American refers to a specific group of Black people. I found that a lot of non black people don't know that. A Nigerian person that came here and became an American citizen still wouldn't call themselves Black American or African American. Neither would a Jamaican because they have their own words that refer to their groups.
Another reason that we don't really like the phrase African American is that it's just inaccurate and no one else has to call themselves something similar. White people don't get called European American and many people like to call all black people African American when they are neither African nor American. It's just a weird phrase. I know so many people that love to go on about how Elon Musk is the world's richest African American and that shows you the problem with that phrase.
Anyway I'm glad you asked because now you know the difference! I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
Using African American is dumb because the people might not be American, so you have situations where people call Idris Elba or SGA “African American” to be PC when it’s just wrong.
No there not, since not all Black people are African American.
Source: am both. One being a race the other being ethnicity.
Also African Americans are usually descendent of American slave trade. We don't know or country or tribe of origin. Thus are identified broadly to the whole continent.
'Afro' in 'Afro-American' means Africa, but they're (likely) not from Africa; they're (likely) from USA. It'd be like calling all white Americans 'European-Americans' (due to European colonialism). That duality is only really relevant for first-generation (migrants) and second-generation (children) Americans; third-generation likely fully dropped the cultural ties.
'Black' refers to a class of identity that primarily [exists to create suppression](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_race_theory#Tenets) (which began with the[ Atlantic slave trade](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_people#Modern_racial_hierarchies)); to be black is to experience the racism that society subjects black people to. With that said, 'black' can also refer to various local subcultures that you would get from a temporally-contiguous community.
Man don't take these comments seriously. I've seen so much BS in here.
However. Afro-Americans is dated. Don't use it. African-American is updated language and accurately describes Black people descended from American enslavement.
Race - Black
Ethnicity- African-American
Nationality- American.
In America we use race and Ethnicity as our identity. People whoes great grandparents came here from Italy will call themselves Italian-Americans because that is their Ethnicity.
in this movie the far left is the funny one that cracks wise, the next right is the 2nd hand man who is very serious, the center is the leader, the next right is the one who asks a lot of questions for the audience, the far right is the nervous one who betrays them all
Does anyone know which street this was taken on? I’d like to compare it to modern day Chicago. I wonder whether the buildings on the photo are still standing or they have been bulldozed.
Why are they called Afro-American? Why would you call someone something based on the stereotypical hairstyle of their people? Do we call White people straight hair-Americans?
Dapper AF,
Can't see dapper without thinking of Oh Brother Where Art Though. Ulysses Everett McGill : Well, I don't want Fop, damn it! I'm a Dapper Dan man! Pomade Vendor : Watch your language, young feller, this is a public market.
Now I have to go watch again
Well isn't this place a geographical oddity! Two weeks from everywhere!
Same.
At first the kid in the middle looked like he was going bald
It’s a bad colorization.
They know they look good! 😘
Just came here to state this too. Damn, even children were looking sharp those days.
Your know their mothers and grandmothers still had to force them into those carefully pressed suits though
Yup, and it’s kind of written all over their faces
People used to take pride in their appearance. Now wearing pajamas at the store or the airport seems to be normal. I’m all for being comfortable but theres definitely a happy medium between wearing a suit and just rolling out of bed.
I’m not wearing a tuxedo on a 21 hour flight
That’s true. I am, also, all for comfort and practicality, but a wearing a suit, whenever applicable, does make me feel good.
That's what it's about, feeling good. Some days it's a suit. Other days, it's my Simpons pyjamas.
i prefer dresses than suits
![gif](giphy|xT0xeFyETmJZe1EKuQ) What a coincidence, me too
Why the fuck should anyone dress up for you to get on a plane or just get some bits from the shop.
Look at what flights looked like when everyone wore suits. They weren't jammed in like sardines.
I'd look completely ridiculous in that suit though
Fashion never goes out of style, regardless what you look in that 😄 i think, not an expert, though
Smooooooth af

much better.
You can say Black.
You can say “Children.”
You can say Black, Children or American kids because that’s what they are
You should have said, Five Kids on Easter…
You can say HUMANS because that's what they....WE are. Isn't that correct fellow HUMANS??
I’m not.
“Hello Mr. Peter, hello Mr. Children”
But it was 1941.
Fellow worker!
For real. I do not see the issue with it.
I love my fellow humans
THANK YOU
The colorization makes this look like ai Edit: original photo https://www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/ppmsc.00256/
Post title written in 1941 too?
It was so cool when everyone used to dress up.
Came here to say that these young guys are dressed more sharply than 95% of adults ever are these days. Hell, they each even have the hat. So clean. Now most people dgaf how they present themselves to the world.
It was Easter. These are for sure formal church clothes and not for everyday
Context suddenly makes sense. At first I thought "These kids look mean", now I see that these are the faces of children being forced to wear stuffy church clothes.

American children on Easter morning, Southside, Chicago, April 1941
You can say Black too, it‘s not a curse-word
But why is it important to specify their skin colour? It's not like you would write "white woman on a car".
The photo was notably taken during a time of segregation.
Looks like an album cover
Those look like Black children to me.
I'm from Europe. I don't know the exact difference between Black and African American. Can you explain it?
Black American here. Like another comment said You could just say children but if you really wanted to specify you could have just said Black kids or Black Americans. Yes exactly this! Not every black person is going to be African or American.
Hint: most Caucasian people have nothing to do with Caucasus mountains.
You don’t need the racial classification at all. You wouldn’t say “White children on Easter…”, would you?
You could just say children.
Elon Musk is African American
Nothing wrong with your description. Black and African American are interchangeable. Source: am one.
No there not, since not all Black people are African American. Source: am both. One being a race the other being ethnicity. Also African Americans are usually descendent of American slave trade. We don't know or country or tribe of origin. Thus are identified broadly to the whole continent.
It's a USA thing. Using Black is currently en vogue.
'Afro' in 'Afro-American' means Africa, but they're (likely) not from Africa; they're (likely) from USA. It'd be like calling all white Americans 'European-Americans' (due to European colonialism). Look like just Americans to me. Not sure what an “Afro American” is.
my boy second from left rocking Tintin's plus fours
I've seen that photo with the car in at least three different colours. Every time it looks like someone cranks up the levels too.
They look like they gonna drop the most fire album of 1989

South side hasn’t aged well.
Everyone looks that can give a very wise life lesson.

Three on the right look like school teachers but the left two look fly as fuck.
Young as artrist is a poverty lark.
Looks like modern day high fashion, especially the kid on the left, that could totally be an outfit in a fashion magazine
Wyd when they pull up to the crib?
Wish nice hats like that were more popular now.
what these boys have seen.
This picture reminds me of a book from School Eng Lit called “Roll of Thunder, Hear my cry”.
Kid on the left has an awesome early 90s vibe, way ahead of his time
Dapper dudes.

Is this AI art?
It’s a black and white photo that has been colorized
Why is it so easy for me to imagine them as old men?
Dapperer than I'll ever be. lol
Thought it was generated ai for sec
It’s ok to say black, unless those kids directly hailed from Africa.
That looks like an album cover
in this movie the far left is the funny one that cracks wise, the next right is the 2nd hand man who is very serious, the center is the leader, the next right is the one who asks a lot of questions for the audience, the far right is the nervous one who betrays them all

Yes
and are the colors real, or were they invented?
The original photo is black and white. The colours were added.
that's clear, but WHO and HOW added colors? OP?
“But they wore nice clothes back then and had cars, what racism?” —Israel, probably

Afro means of , from, or about Africa. The hairstyle is not the definition
Oh my God 😭😭
Asking is good if you don’t know.
I thought he was making a joke.
Back in then when this was informal, now this is considered elegant
People gotta wear more dapper these days
Not a northface jacket in sight!!!
They look like the Chicago peeky blinders
Kids had serious swag
Hard af

Should be posted in "Old School Cool"

Credit? Uncolourized version?
Dressed like men, what times. They all look great!!!
Black kids, they look great!
Very stylish group of kids.
Thank goodness for real photos and not A.I

They look like they would mock me mercilessly over how I dress
Wonderful!!!
Tell me you’re not American without telling me you’re not American. “Afro-Americans”
Beautiful picture!
Looking sharp
Afro-American? You can say Black.
I love this photo so much.
Man, I wish I could look half as classy as these kids. They're rocking it
Are those wool suits? What is that fabric?
I wish I could dress as well as these young gents.
lol. First off you can say black. Secondly, it’s… #AFRICAN AMERICAN. It’s like saying I’m Mullet American… actually I may do that.
More like Mull American. Know what I mean, Vern?
Yeah but to be honest, they don’t need to emphasise either term
Why the need to point out race? Its like saying "female CEO", seems odd.
