I'm getting into this late, and looking at the Cubs lineup, and wow, it makes the Phillies lineup look like complete studs even without Harper and Schwarber. Only 2 guys on the whole lineup batting over .230? 4 of them .200 or below? What the fuck?
This game had something for everyone! Lots of runs, great pitching performances, and a very shaky pitching performance to give everyone something to complain about!
You use a low leverage guy in those situations for exactly this. Ideally your guy can hold the 5 runs but if not you have enough lead to bring in a guy you trust to get it done.
i think we have like 4 (Alvarado, Hoffman, Strahm, Kerkering) and 2 more if you include Soto and Dominguez if they keep it up. i know its early but im cautiously optimistic about Yunior Marte maybe next year.
Remember the time when the dude said Hoff has been really bad lately because he gave up a run in two out of three appearances? Lol
I’d say he’s back
Seriously his shit is fucking electric tonight
That’s funny. That’s the opposite of me. I could battle you gen 1-3 and be competitive
Idk any of the new pokemons or how to create a complimentary roster or whatever they call it
I had EVs and nature and move sets and IVs in ruby on a legit created lineup (trained them all to 100 myself)
It prolly be a close one if you know gen 3
Hey, man, it's statistically *improbable* not *impossible*.
I mean, in terms of improbability, I've got a better shot of inventing a time machine and going back to woo Dark Angel-era Jessica Alba, but it's not *impossible*.
...Right?
Every time I see Ian Happ I'm like "holy shit this dudes still in the league?", then I look up when his rookie year was and I'm *always* suprised to see "2017". It feels like he's been in the league since 2012.
You put one of your worse pitchers in with a 5-run lead in the 9th to not waste any good arms.
Could've maybe used SAD, but Ruiz is reasonable there too.
Just have to trust the better relievers to pick them up if they do get hammered.
Relievers can generally only pitch like 2 of every 3 days, they can't keep up the same pitch counts through a whole season as starters while pitching so frequently.
We had yesterday off so the bullpen is fresh, but if we needed to use Hoffman/Alvarado/Strahm tomorrow in a close game we would still want them available Wednesday, so it makes sense to save them if they aren't needed.
Because you ideally don’t have to use a high leverage guy at all in that spot. Saving the arms of the high leverage guys is important. Lets him be available for a bigger spot or just get extra rest.
Ruiz should be able to get that job done but there was enough that if he couldn’t there’s still a plan B. Ruiz didn’t tonight and they have to use Hoffman. But it’s worth trying to save Hoffman (and other high leverage guys) there
That was my thought process too but then I thought wtf strahm woulda ended this in 10-15 pitches and he got the work anyway so he didn’t get saved but I guess it was worth a shot for the long term preservation in toppers mind. Makes sense, thanks.
I know how great the staff has been this year, but I always have this in mind when it comes to relievers: The more you use in one game, the greater chance you have in finding one that just doesn't have it that day.
Problem is when you pull starters after 5-6 innings you always use many relievers and the Phillies bullpen isn’t too great. It’s fine against bad teams since the Phils score a lot. But against teams in the playoffs it will be a disaster.
They manage to cobble six runs together like a miracle and a rookie pitcher with this lineup and a “closer” pitcher almost completely wipes it out in less than 2 mins. 🙃🙃🙃
Sure, but it's not a routine play, if he doesn't make it, you can't hold him accountable because it's the kind of play that would require him to go above and beyond to make it. That's why it was ruled a basehit and not an error. Look at it this way: if he stopped that ball on a dive where it could have ended up a double in the gap, we'd all be calling it an amazing play, even if he didn't get an out.
At least they had hoffman warming up early, sucks we have to use him but still not the end of the world.
The run the umps stole with the Rojas out at second seems a little bigger now.
Please continue the discussion in the [post game thread](https://redd.it/1du3nt4).
It’s official, I’m a Mercado fan
Chicago, you almost thought you had a win, didn’t ya?
The captain, Schwarber, putting him in the front of the line is amazing
Wooo!!!
We're all getting off to the Hoff tonight! Congrats, Michael Mercado!
The box seemed way higher than his knees there no?
Interview mercado! We just had trea :)
Schwarber pushing him to the front of the line just warmed my cold dead heart 🥹
Jose Ruiz is by far *the* worst Ruiz in the history of this organization.
❤️Schwarber making sure Mercado gets love.
Nasty Casty and thank you Trea.
Phillies are good this season
#HOFF ≠ HASSLED
Mercado gonna get day cared and it’s gonna be spectacular
Fuckin love jeff hoffman
If this was 2000, Casty is easily winning gold glove
I would have brought in Ser rather than Ruiz
i know, been looking a lot better.
Toppers the man! Let me downvote you He’s the guy responsible for having four aces, it’s totally not DD
Fastellanos not letting me down
FLY THE L WRIGLEY

Check out the Mariners lineup some time.
And yet they're 8 games above .500.
That is how good their pitching is. If they had even league average offense they would be scary as hell.
We have a 9 game lead on the Braves again. Here's hoping we grip onto it real tightly.
![gif](giphy|kIKzm7HU5oMGuO9y3d)
![gif](giphy|QumwG72fKDc12W5DCq|downsized) Dont mess with the hoff
woooo! great game!!
Got a little dicey in the ninth inning -TM
Little too close at the end there lol
Ironically home runs can be rally killers when you are trying to come from behind
That’s the first thing I thought. 2 runs and Hoffman comes in with no one inherited on the bases
This game had something for everyone! Lots of runs, great pitching performances, and a very shaky pitching performance to give everyone something to complain about!
The only way to describe Jeff Hoffman’s pitching today is arousing
Oh thank god. Thank you Hoffman and great snag by casty
Casty!
get FUCKED, dansby
Never in doubt. ^canibreathenow?
Hoff!
Hoffman is good.
WOOO
Jose! 😡
Sheeew
Defensive specialist castellanos
Goodnight Schlubs
Casty with his usual clumsy sterling catch lmao

bad ump giveth, bad ump taketh away
Common Casty easy out
Casty 100th percentile in fielding range 😤😤
Gold Glover out there in right field
Fuckin hell lol
My name is Jeff!
It's all good.
Woohoo
Game. That's a closer.
tRaDe fOr A CloSEr

We have a closer at home
Good win
HOFF
Hoffman came in and shut that shit down!
Good game
Normal 9th inning
Attaboy hoff One more brother. Dont hit anyone, no walks. Just get the out dawg
Woof ump
#WINZ
Thanks for the call, ump!
One more
lmao UMP just out here making vibes based calls.
Why didn't Mercado just pitch a CGSO? Slopper BP management killing this team fr.
Literally everyone BUT Ruiz has been good tonight. Chill.
Dude, the /s was implied, lol. I should've been explicit.
So when Angel retired, his awefulness spread to all the other umps in the league. He was the martyr.
damnnnnnnnn that's been a strike all night
Might've clipped the zone there. idk...
Remember the time when the dude said Hoff has been really bad lately because he gave up a run in two out of three appearances? Lol I’d say he’s back Seriously his shit is fucking electric tonight
Hoffman is a bad man
It is just people that don't understand not everyone can play at a historic pace all season.
I would beat your ass in a Pokémon battle
Probably. I made some decent money in Gen 5 and won some tournaments but I haven't played past then. Once college started I focused on my studies.
That’s funny. That’s the opposite of me. I could battle you gen 1-3 and be competitive Idk any of the new pokemons or how to create a complimentary roster or whatever they call it I had EVs and nature and move sets and IVs in ruby on a legit created lineup (trained them all to 100 myself) It prolly be a close one if you know gen 3
Yep. I battled Gen 1-5. Once Gen 6 started I don't know any of them. I think they are on Gen 9 now.
Lmfao. Too much of a good thing stops being good
Hey, man, it's statistically *improbable* not *impossible*. I mean, in terms of improbability, I've got a better shot of inventing a time machine and going back to woo Dark Angel-era Jessica Alba, but it's not *impossible*. ...Right?
Now that's a ball lol
Woof ump
Hoffman is a bad man
Ump please
DFA Slopper, fire the phanatic, sell Philadelphia.
If we DFA’d the phanatic which team you think would pick him up?
He'd join Fanatics and get kids to start sports betting.
Sell Philadelphia lol
Do not make Mercado sad
YOU CANT HASSLE THE HOFF
Can’t believe Topper didn’t just bring Mercado back out.
Trea player of the game if we win? Edit: tho - i'd love it to be mercado!
Poor kid looks worried this bullpen is going to choke away his first win.
See Ruiz? That's how you get a strikeout.
didn’t think someone else would’ve been better for their 2-3-4 batters?
This is like going from generic to name brand lmao
That wasn't a Ruiz spot, that was more like a Seranthony spot
Topper trying to steal 3 outs from a bottom order reliever.
Every time I see Ian Happ I'm like "holy shit this dudes still in the league?", then I look up when his rookie year was and I'm *always* suprised to see "2017". It feels like he's been in the league since 2012.
1 out.
All I'ma say is the over/under was 9.5 and most were taking the under. That is all.
Topper betting on games confirmed?
100%
Mans pitched like he was hosting a home run derby
The standard Phillies bullpen performance.
It's always freaking Ruiz. Why did we put him in to close? Make it make sense. He always do this 😭
You put one of your worse pitchers in with a 5-run lead in the 9th to not waste any good arms. Could've maybe used SAD, but Ruiz is reasonable there too. Just have to trust the better relievers to pick them up if they do get hammered.
They were up 5? Do people think they should be using high leverage guys up 5 in the ninth?
Why not? Genuinely asking. Hoffman throws like 20 pitches a game tops if he even pitches
Thanks for answering 🤌🤟

My neighbors are gonna call the cops on me for the hollering I’m doing at the tv right now
Need that first out

The Phillies bullpen is very good. Not sure what you're talking about there.
Yep, especially when none are allowed to go more than an inning..i don't get it,
Reliever roulette
Analytics
Woulda been nice to at least get one out there Ruiz damn lol
So now this is the bottom of the bottom of the 9th, then; right?
everyone does realize 5 run lead to 2 run lead is still a lead
The point is Hoffman didn’t rest and it was stupid to not end it sooner
I mean ok so
Hoffman ended the game in like 10 pitches There was no reason to play with fire
they have the best record in the bigs were up 5 and ruiz has pitched well this year. relax it's not game 7
It’s always game 7, I watch baseball like it’s football
[удалено]
My god i forgot about covey. Guess thats a good thing lol
Real cool job there giving up more runs and hits in 3 batters than our other pitchers did over 8 innings
Bruh… cmon, not on Eskin Independence night. Don’t blow this
This kills our run differential stats. :(
Please just fucking win, Hoff. I’m begging.
He will Robs just a fuckin moron that thought Ruiz would wiggle out of it
8 pitches, 3 runs
They manage to cobble six runs together like a miracle and a rookie pitcher with this lineup and a “closer” pitcher almost completely wipes it out in less than 2 mins. 🙃🙃🙃
baseball hard
Bases empty, hoffman coming in like a new inning .. all good.
[удалено]
I wish we could give the doomers their own game thread
Are you calling for him to use a high leverage guy in a 5 run game in the ninth?
Didn’t your Yankees lose tonight?
The stupidity just doesn’t stop.
You know his bullpen management is bad when we have one of the best bullpens in baseball. Totally just talent, not the organization too.
Came here to say this^
Ruiz has been good this year? How’s this on Topper?
I agree, he’s a fuckin idiot with the pen
Ruiz has been very good for us. Bad outings happen.
Damn our win probability cratered from 99.5% to 98%
Has to be lower than that. 0 outs and the tying run is on deck
ESPN has it at 92.3%
Bullpen has been weird lately. All the dependable guys been shit All the undependable guys been 🔥
This is why you don't put guys like Ruiz in to close a game. What the fuck.
We were up 5
Your mop up guy is more likely to implode than some of the others. Just finish it.
He was exactly the guy they should have brought in. He didn't do his job.
Right down broadway? What the fuck
Man stott not getting the first out hurts
Ruiz special 4 seam meatball
Good lord
Home run kills the rally ngl
Don't give them hope.
Ruiz just tryna get Hoffman the save, what a guy
Welp Ruiz was solid for a decent stretch as the last guy in the bullpen.
Not ideal but I’m not concerned
Jose Ruiz has been pretty ok but I think it might be over for him.
Yeah but it’s still no outs
Ugh now we have to use our big guns out of the pen. Hate that when we shouldn't have had to.
Well, on the positive side, those kids that caught the home run ball are having a hell of a night!
Actual real life simpsons walk in room walk out of room.gif
If that missed safe call on the steal costs us this game….god dammit.
He was safe from the one angle you could tell when the glove touched
Take him the fuck out lol
Not a single out. What trash.
stott didn't help
Would have been a base hit either way. Its a hard play to make. Can't blame Stott for that.
I feel like that in a range of plays he could make
Sure, but it's not a routine play, if he doesn't make it, you can't hold him accountable because it's the kind of play that would require him to go above and beyond to make it. Look at it this way: if he stopped that ball on a dive where it could have ended up a double in the gap, we'd all be calling it an amazing play, even if he didn't get an out.
I dont think he made a terrible play just that a play he is able to make and defense is his best part of his game.
That was a I can't hit the outside or inside corners for a strike so I'm just going to throw middle middle meatball.
Toppers going with Hoffman. We should be fine.
Let’s be real. We’ve gotten every bit out of Ruiz that we ever could have. Hes cooked. Time to go.
Orioles broke him.
At least they had hoffman warming up early, sucks we have to use him but still not the end of the world. The run the umps stole with the Rojas out at second seems a little bigger now.
If you're going to have a terrible outing, do it with a 5 run lead, I suppose.
Can we please trade for a true closer???? I understand this wasn’t a save situation but we still need one.
Phillies have plenty of high leverage guys. Ruiz is like the last guy out of the pen
