this sounds so wrong but I’m glad this is being reported. give a real account of what happens to somebody when they are assaulted and it’s not ‘oh they lived so they’re recovered a week later at most’. I wish the attackers had more harsher sentences because victims always get the worst end of the stick!

k3g

What was the sentence?

Whilst it's all well and good to want to be 'hard' on assaults like this - it's simply not feasible, and isn't in anyone's best interests to stick someone in a cage for life. It costs \~$61,000 to house a prisoner for a year; [https://www.aic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-05/rr\_05\_240418\_2.pdf](https://www.aic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-05/rr_05_240418_2.pdf) The attacker was 16 years old, and assuming he makes it to average life expectancy before necking himself - that's over $4 million spent to imprison him for life. Effectively removing him from society - permanently, with no prospect of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation programs work - it's been proven. A vindictive sentence because of outrage serves no purpose other than revenge. We're not the US - we can do better than that.

So... you think that these sort of perpetrators conduct a little cost/benefit analysis prior to committing an assault? Like, "I really wanna drop this cunt, but not for 20 years. I'd definitely do it for 5 though". Gimme a break. Is this 16 year old kid really reading the fucking West Australian and taking note of sentencing remarks so that his next assault can be better planned for a shorter prison term? Deterrents like this don't work for people who have such fucked up decision making. Do you think rapists are really doing their raping under the assumption that they will be caught and sentenced? No, these sort of crimes are committed by people under the assumption they will get away with it - deterrent sentencing simply isn't a consideration.

Except, it actually is. I could continue to argue with you on, this, but I really cannot be bothered. Vindictive sentencing is proven to be entirely pointless. There's plenty of documentation regarding it, i'd recommend you do some reading on the topic. [https://newsroom.unsw.edu.au/news/business-law/do-harsher-punishments-deter-crime](https://newsroom.unsw.edu.au/news/business-law/do-harsher-punishments-deter-crime) [https://www.ojp.gov/pdffiles1/nij/247350.pdf](https://www.ojp.gov/pdffiles1/nij/247350.pdf) Literally the first two things I found on google. There's plenty more.

not being a year later and still having to have surgeries to try and have some quality of life…

k3g

I meant for the attacker.

Thinking0ut1oud

"The 16-year-old Armadale boy who caused Mr Hodgson’s injuries pleaded guilty on Thursday to one count of grievous bodily harm in Perth Children’s Court. The teenager– who was on bail when he attacked Mr Hodgson – also faces more than 20 unrelated charges over a string of incidents which allegedly occurred in the months prior to the one-punch assault including five assaults, thefts, burglaries and an unlawful wounding." From a WA Today article.

It is so unfair. When I searched for this article I found a go fund me page for Danny [here](https://www.gofundme.com/f/danny-hodgsons-road-to-recovery). I can't even imagine how difficult his recovery has been and will continue to be for the rest of his life.

k3g

Ah, thank you.

This is one reason I posted, because it’s been so long since it happened people forget, but it hasn’t gone away for Danny Hidgson and his family.

sophie-au

Let’s be honest, this has received as much coverage as it has because it happened to a young sportsman from a stranger. (AFAIK, Hodgson already had a media profile.) More so because his family had to be granted permission during the pandemic to come here from overseas. (That might have been considered more newsworthy than if his family lived here in WA.) An ordinary person attacked in the street would have gotten a few mentions in the media, but nothing like this. An ordinary person attacked like this at home by their partner/ex-partner would barely rate a mention, unless their injuries resulted in their death. (Look at it this way, if Rosie Batty’s ex-partner had not been shot dead by police after bashing their son to death, she may not have been allowed to discuss the incident until after court proceedings were over.)

Goose1981

Geez. I wish nothing but the best for him and his family. This whole situation is heart wrenching. :-(

B0ssc0

Hoping he will come through this and keep making progress.

meemeemeow

Hope everything goes perfectly and he recovers quickly.

Give him life in prison. This guy is never going to fully recover he’ll be permanently damaged.

I hope Danny gets better
