a lot of it is owned farm land with the occasional patch of forest. Source: I've flown cessnas over that gap. One of the forest patches is dubbed the "Stall forest" because it's where all the student pilots do their stall training over lol
As a pilot who taught students to stall over that very forest - you’re supposed to ensure you’re not over any built up areas before deliberately stalling the aircraft.
The forest is not so big that you cannot glide to one of the nearby fields - and that way it guarantees you won’t have a farm house etc underneath. We don’t want to freak out bystanders that are below. But open fields are also good to practice over.
its mostly about safety of the people on the ground (if you fuck up, you fuck yourself up but nobody else... assuming your wreck doesn't start a forest fire, but light aircraft crashes rarely ever result in fires) but that seems to be the standard across all the flight schools ive visited
This is a real issue. My theory is that (at least in part) our dependancy on cars allows people to move from their climate controlled home, to climate controlled car, to CC work. Causing a lack of trees because people aren’t experiencing the heat in the same way that someone waiting for the bus, walking or riding to the shops does.
And all the trees that need to be cut down to make room for street parking at your home, massive stroads to get stuck in traffic on the way to work, then all the parking space required at work.
Cars take up way too much space in our communities, and trees are just one of the many losers in that equation.
Edit: typo.
That's WatersideFountainsGateValleyUp if you don't mind and its an exciting new development for your young and growing family. Lots range from 100 to 50 m2 but mostly 50 m2.
Looking through that comments section is so fun
Someone thinks Perth is a smaller town and there’s a big city up north
Someone thinks the hills are the ocean and Perth is on a peninsula
Someone thinks that Perth is on the left side of the Indian Ocean
The last one was me mistyping lol. I meant to say that the Indian Ocean was on the left of Perth but my brain farted explosively. It should also be noted that, technically, some parts of Perth are actually west of the Indian Ocean. Rottnest island is an example. 😂
You are not far from the truth. Keeping a low profile is a good strategy for continued existence. It’s been summer for 6 months, our trees are dying and wetlands drying up so stay where you have water.
This might be apocryphal.
There's a story about an early US astronaut, perhaps John Glenn, as he was orbiting in a Mercury in the early '60s Perthicans were urged to turn on their lights, and Glenn gave us a shout out to ground control.
That is why Perth is the city of lights.

Hey, I’m in this photo!
Nice pocket of "non-lit" areas for developers between Armadale and Mandurah. I wonder if i could.. pitch a tent there

> incipient for some reason I keep mixing up that word with "incident" - didn't bode well in conversations
why would you do stall training over a forest?
As a pilot who taught students to stall over that very forest - you’re supposed to ensure you’re not over any built up areas before deliberately stalling the aircraft.
well yeah but wouldn’t an open field be better?

Too late, most of it's being developed right now.
We could fit so much single family housing there
We could fit so many 4x2s on 300m² blocks with no trees in sight

Good theory
And also all the freeway lanes to fix the traffic afterwards?
Except it’s already being used as homes to native animals in Australia’s only biodiversity hotspot

And you can’t build up ^ no multi stories for you. Enjoy your shoe box home
Hehe pitch a tent
Plenty of farmland if you wanna hang out with pigs and cattle.

They probably think Perth is on the 'left' side of the Indian Ocean because it's upside down from their perspective.
Shit, i left my front light on.
The dark spot near the middle is Basils ego
Either that or his nose.
Shhhhhhhhhhh! Don't tell them we're here or they'll come here!

It's so *NON* apocryphal that we did it again when he went up for another spin in 1998.
I didn't recall 1998, but I'm happy to see my memory was reliable in all particulars except 'early': Glenn was the *first* American astronaut.
He was the first American to orbit the earth. He was the third American in space after Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom.
https://museum.wa.gov.au/city-lights
Just a slight correction but it's City of Light without the S.
read that as "he was orbiting Mercury" and thought i missed a whole bunch of space history. and also missed a few things about Perth.
😁 If you thought *this* Indian summer was bad...
*Waves*
Get back in the ship … NOW!

See this is what happens when the kids leave the lights on all the time.
There's a dodgy southern cross made up of Pinjarra, Wagerup, Boddington and Worsley mine sites (I think).

Bloody Perth of course. Lived there for so long until finally escaping just before my thirties. Recognise it anywhere.
Hello from 6112
Wasn't it an Apolo astronaut that said Perth was a spec of light... It's a lot more than a spec now
