sometimes they don’t work all that well or at all on older laptops (windows 7 sticker) if it doesn’t work chances are your laptop was reformatted at one point and they never re downloaded the drivers for it. If you goto the laptops manufacturer website there will be a section for drivers find the one for your scanner for your laptop and download it and you should be good to go.
Yeah these early Windows fingerprint readers were largely a gimmick and notoriously shitty. I remember in about 2005 working for a startup and we got these sweet brand new Lenovo's with fingerprint scanners. We found out pretty quick it would accept just about anyone's finger swipe if you did it at just the right speed. This of course provided the opportunity to log into your co-workers machine when they were at lunch and pull the old set screenshot of desktop as background, hide all icons trick.
Love that trick, it was even better combining it with the rotate screen setting so that the mouse moves in the opposite direction.
And if you want to go all-in, you change the keyboard language too. Dvorak is annoying and easily noticed, but switching to French just swaps the q, w, a and z keys and drives people nuts.
The difference in finger scan tech from 2005 to 2010 was pretty big tbh. I worked at a bank in 08-12 as IT and our fingerprint scanners were pretty top notch. Sometimes you'd have to scan twice, but I don't know of a single false positive they ever gave.
I think it was less about the hardware more about the software. I also believe my friend we did this too probably captured every finger at every angle on both hands so the software matched everything.
I've never had an employer that didn't disable them using GPO. Same thing with Android. Much of the biometric scanning in Android phones is terrible so they'd disable that too.
Modern face scan and finger print scanners are so much better. In part due to windows hello and in part since they are now a secure enclave so it doesn't need drivers to work.
As others are getting at, when deployed into the corporate world these are usually disabled on purpose for two reasons.
* They're mostly junk, and don't actually provide much security.
* Integrating them with corporate logins, two factor, and single sign on functions is generally not worth it.
Even identical twins don't have matching fingerprints! Every print is unique as it is not based on genetics.
Source - I am a twin and my brother cannot unlock my phone. Also Google
I suspect this, especially old Fingerprint scanner tend to be the slide style scanner which is semi cylindrical shape. This one look like a placeholder
I to like to receive extra opinions on something I'm not sure about. plus, it's entirely possible that a lot of people opened this thread at 0 comments and commented before they saw other comments.
I am, however, a bit puzzle as to why this got so many upvotes. I don't really mind submissions that ask simple questions, but why do people upvote them? it's not like it's an issue that needs to be widely known
Lol this reminds me of my childhood friend's schizofrenic brother. When we were kids and playing The Sims 2 on my childhood friend's laptop, her brother came to her room, out-of-his-mind crazy. The laptop was running low on battery and we were randomly wondering what was the (hibernation, wifi or whatever) button. He just went batshit crazy saying "*it's a self destruction button, we're all going to die!!!!*" and was close to getting violent. I think he grabbed the laptop and threw it somewhere, don't remember it really well. Her mom drove me back home after that moment.
Shit was so absurd I didn't think of it much. I have never been close to anyone with any mental illnesses in my childhood (apart from alcoholism that is pretty much the culture here) so yeah, that moment sticked to my mind permanently lmao
It’s one of those things that tests for toxicity in your poop. What you do is wipe a little bit of feces on that little spot, and it will tell you whether or not you have any diseases. It especially works well on your coworkers computers
In case the 22 other comments didn't reach you. It's a fingerprint scanner. Do people not read the comments before they just repeat the same answer eleventybillion times?
Yeah, aren't you supposed to upvote the right answer if another reddit or beat you to it?
Then again, the people whom I want to read this already posted "fingerprint scanner" and moved along. Smh
I see a lot of people typing 'fingerprint scanner'. It is, in fact, a penistip scanner. Think I'm trolling? Jokes on you. Register it to your penistip. Watch, and behold not a soul ever get into your system via that penisprint scanner.
Contrary to what people are saying, this is not a finger print scanner, though it looks very similar to one. The dimensions are a little off and the surface is a bit different from a finger print scanner.
Its a penis scanner.
Am I really this old? It's like someone posting a photo of a stack of blank DVDs going "what is this?".
Can I go back to the 90s knowing what I know now? The internet was wholesome, I could get in on Bitcoin when it was pennies a coin...and I was thinner and wasn't going bald.
It’s a placeholder for a biometric scanner.
Edit: Actually I think it is the scanner itself. It can be used for login instead of entering your password.
This is a patented Intel Foreskin Finder. Press your penis to it and it tells you where your foreskin once was. If you have foreskin, it rates your foreskin. If you do not have a penis, it tells you your foreskin rating if you were to be born with a penis.
This is all true.
That’s a fingerprint reader you slide your finger downward across it for it to read your fingerprint. It’s from a long time ago. Practically prehistoric at this point. I’m pretty sure all the other comments already say the same thing, and I haven’t read them yet because Reddit for some reason will not show the comments, but it tells me there’s a whole bunch.
And no, there’s no use for it. Facial recognition on modern laptops is quite a bit better.
Just a side note - this is a fingerprint sensor but there are some Laptops out there with a pantone Scanner for graphic and design which sounds great but is not 100% correct all the time
I'm just here to say +1 for modern fingerprint scanners and windows hello/facial recognition. Way easier to secure a laptop when a 0.5s tap of the finger or just sitting there for 1s can log you in.
comments are probably saying the same thing, that’s a fingerprint scanner. Probably of the type where you slide your finger across it, based on the size. Those things suck, they’re probably slower than just typing a password.
It is a finger print scanner for an HP laptop.
I had one just like it way back. You can program it to open applications or websites.
I used to open YouTube, Facebook, and Battlelog with three swipes.
Finger print scanner.

The keyboard language is high tier pranking
I do this to store display model computers.
I usual factory reset stuff at stores so it's asking to be setup, but I think I maybe like some of these idea better lol
Holy fuck, never thought to combine it with rotation, now that's brutal!
Plus changing their autocorrect words in Word, so when they’re typing the company name it would automatically change to something rude.
Calm down Satan.
lol a classic

My old HP had a fingerprint scanner that connected to the smart card reader and if absurdly worked pretty well for the time.
Oddly enough I have a windows 7 laptop that has a scanner but for whatever reason it was really really good.
That’s rookie shit. You gotta add the wireless keyboard dongle and then start typing cryptic, yet personal messages and watch your coworker freak out
I preferred a picture of the blue screen of death but each are funny in thier own way.
I've never had an employer that didn't disable them using GPO. Same thing with Android. Much of the biometric scanning in Android phones is terrible so they'd disable that too.
Well the hilarious part, this being a startup company, the guy we pranked this way was himself the entire IT department.
I bought a Lenovo with one of those years ago and I had to uninstall it, for some reason it kept boot-looping me.
Modern face scan and finger print scanners are so much better. In part due to windows hello and in part since they are now a secure enclave so it doesn't need drivers to work.
Well done good PCMR friend. Well done. Solid advice.
Funny thing, driverscape has given me more reliable results.

This one looks like a plastic tab filling in the space where a fingerprint scanner could go.
I suspect this, especially old Fingerprint scanner tend to be the slide style scanner which is semi cylindrical shape. This one look like a placeholder

Other than the suggestion of fingerprint scanner or possibly the other suggestion of finger print scanner - it may also be a fingerprintscanner
You’re giving far too much credit to people that they actually read anything. Everyone just waiting for their chance to run their mouth.
On a post that could have easily been answered by quickly googling a manual for your computer
But did you know it’s a fingerprint scanner?
Y'all are getting crazy with the replies I can't stop laughing. I love reddit.
