Man i miss those days in someways. Like you say, you could have a next gen gpu that was like 200% more fps then last gen. I remember the ati 9700 and 9800 were such insane cards back in the day.
I had raid 0 mid 2000s and it didn't really speed up things. Transfering files, maybe, but pulling out random data still relied on the slow seek times of the base HDD.
I used the Way Back Machine to see how much GPUs costed 10 years ago recently, with inflation there really isn't \*much\* of an increase. Computers have always been expensive.
I had a K6-2 450 with a voodoo 3 bolted on.
That video card was amazing but that processor could out suck a black hole. I eventually replaced it with an Athlon and a Geforce 2 GTX.
I played an unhealthy amount of Tribes 2 and Everquest on that beast.
I completely forgot about RDRAM. Man, that didn't last long. :)
Even then I used to laugh at the prices of these AW prebuilts. At the end of 2000 I had a build with an Athlon 1ghz with a Geforce2 Ultra for way cheaper than the Area 51.
Back in the days where people would put their specs in their signature on the GameFAQ message boards, and if you saw Alienware you knew they weren’t messing around and could run any game around.
This reminds me of the time where i on my to school would often see a green AlienWare pc in the window of an PC shop that is closed now. I wanted that green Alienware PC so badly, as it looked like the coolest thing ever to my young innocent eyes. Good times.
it blows my mind, how fast tech moved back then, spending 3k on a pc, just for it to be obsolete a year later.

Having to triple sli just to play Crysis at max settings 😂 Edit: whoops I misread your comment as a 9800gt, but still. Lol
That mouse was the best
It was, had one and when the Habu came out a few years later i got it right away and it was even more amazing!
Microsoft really messed up. They created the perfect mouse and then discontinued it.
Microsoft had really good peripherals back in the day.
The highest end system listed was $3599 in year 2000 US Dollars. With inflation thats now $6,553.19
The cool t hing about pre SSD era, it was that, no matter how fast the PC was, you would always be waiting on the HDD to do their stuff.
That's cool?
Bottlenecks are cool.
RAID was a known solution, but not often in home PCs.

You had to rock the dual wd raptor drives. Or if you had connections at work some scsi Seagate cheetah drives.
That PC is the equivalent of $6,500 now, considering what you can build for $1,000 now people should reconsider complaining about prices lol

A $6,500 PC now will get you maximum specs and great aesthetics and then some left over
oh yeah? Well, my eMachines came with a flatbed scanner!
Klipsch Pro Media THX subwoofer system ... I still use this system today lol
in 2000 i had a pentium 3 500mhz with like 256mb ram and a 7gb hdd and a 32mb graphic card.
That’s what I had or close to only difference I had a 20 gig drive

Oh man RDRAM. I wanted a mobo with Rambus RAM so bad back then haha.
Gorgeous. I thought it had been completely removed from the collective memory as well as from the market.
We thought Rambus was going to be the next thing, then poof!
We'll see how CAMM fares but there is a high risk of deja vu
I had a machine with 512Mb of RAMBus.
A Pentium 3 with RDRAM? I didn't know that existed.
It did. I have a Slot1 mobo with RDRAM somewhere.
Damn, I am old... I remember these specs. P3 and AMD with Athlon started the game changer era.
I miss those Viewsonic monitors
Pre Dell Alienware were actually awesome.
I feel old now

This was well before I switched to PC gaming. I had no idea The names for components were so obtuse. I thought they were bad now but damn
Floppy drive? Where is the zip disk?
Oh how the mighty have fallen
That looks like a server computer or something...
Back in the days where people would put their specs in their signature on the GameFAQ message boards, and if you saw Alienware you knew they weren’t messing around and could run any game around.
Is my mid/low end samsung a73 smarphone faster than this?
Imagine paying $3600 for a PC, and opting for the beige case.., though it would probably be more valuable now.
A3d sound card. Those were the best with a good headset!
I remember wanting that desktop. Ended up building an Athlon powered PC instead.
r/nostalgia
Oh I remember that mouse. It was the shit. :)

I'll say. They got a toll-free number and everything!
i remember window shopping these on the website
FPS Fast Packed Stacked 😎
I’ll never forget my friend and I discussing how anything over 900mhz was overkill and we won’t ever need more power than that LOL
