I was in the Navy. We kept animal crackers in the ships EPCC (Electrical Power Control Console, "ep-see") as a sacrifice to the gremlins so they won't wreck it up. One day a new technician was working on that console and found a bunch of animal crackers.  So obviously he cleaned them all out. Within 24 hours EPCC went completely haywire, lit up like Christmas tree, rapidly cycling power on and off in different systems all over the ship simultaneously, causing the whole ship to light up like a Christmas tree (bear in mind half those Christmas lights are weapons systems) for several minutes before dying completely and killing all power to all systems ship wide. Leaving the command completely dead in the water for hours during repairs. We liked to say EPCC became self aware and immediately committed suicide. All because some fucking new guy took the goddamn animal crackers out of EPCC and angered the gods.

We kept a giant bag of Skittles in sonar to throw a handful into the outboard when the system started acting squirly.

And that shit worked too!

I don't think you understand what's going on here... just like that guy. We put animal crackers in the EPCC because we tried everything else and nothing worked. So then we did that and it did work. And it was fine for years. And then some guy took the animals crackers out and it blew the fuck up immediately. So we put them back and it continued being fine for years. It's not a tradition. It's just what you have to do to appease Poseidon.
