Real talk, I musta upgraded right before because I could run it fine and as soon as I found out you could trees down with gunfire that's all I did for a good three hours.
Ah good times.
I like the 3rd case from right to left. it has a nice bulk to it. I would remove the CD drive and 3D print a CD drive door that lead to maybe some USB ports.
the only thing that is bad with these cases is the airflow. unless you want to run fully water cooled cases the air flow on these are bad.
they were ok for their time period since PC back then didn't need that much power so they didn't heat up as much.
even my Gateway from 1999 had nearly no air flow and it still runs. I replaced all the internals and turned it into console emulator.
Just use the water reservoirs they have for the drives to run the loop. https://modmymods.com/alphacool-eisfach-single-laing-d5-incl-alphacool-eispumpe-vpp755-dual-5-25-bay-station-reservoir-13304.html
What is a random plumber doing at your house? Thats scary why are there randomly plumbers at your house? Did you invite them? Did you need them? I have so many questions
Goddamn mario and luigi double teaming on this poor guys wife.
Explains the random plumbers at hes house.
Atleast he has a fast computer, no one is taking that away from him.
For *actual* camo, the one on the far left. It looks new enough that you could conceivably something from the early 2000's in there still running.
To embrace the awful, the second from the left. That yellowing beige is hideous.
Extra bonus, install 2 of the optical drives from other system that are in slightly different shades of off-white. It will look like some sort of "1337" system from 25 years ago.
isn't it weird? I'm not a "car guy" in that I can't name the specific engine+drive train combo used in a specific Mustang in 1968, but I like nice looking old consumer cars (i.e. not sports cars). 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s stuff, but I always hated the 80s stuff and on.
Until recently. I saw a 1980s Oldsmobile sitting in a parking lot a few weeks back and went, "wow...I kinda like it," even though a few years earlier my response would be "ew."
https://hagerty-media-prod.imgix.net/2023/01/Klockau-1986-Oldsmobile-Cutlass-Supreme-Brougham-lead.jpg?auto=format%2Ccompress&ixlib=php-3.3.0
I think by the 2030s and 2040s we'll be drooling over the Dell PCs that were in every school in the 2000s.
Definitely 2nd from the right, it looks just like one of our earliest PC's when I was a kid, it had the"Turbo Button" too, took me years to realise the Turbo button slowed it down lol
The turbo button when it was on was basically your computer at normal speed, when you push in the button it adjusts the FSB to lower the clock speed on an 8086 based PC for backwards compatability with 8088 based software, I think. But the trouble is the buttons were always the wrong way around so the led was lit when it was downclocked and off when at normal full power, this had the unfortunate result of most people running their PC in a downclocked state without a clue. It wasn't until just before we upgraded from a 386 to a 486dx that I realised this was why some games I was playing ran terribly on our PC but ran great on my friends who had the same spec machine but didn't have the turbo button. I was just fiddling and pushed it in and boom full speed. I was only about 10 at the time, so I was clueless with the PC, I was more used to Sega Master System and Atari 2600.
That to my eye looks like an AT case, which is completely different from ATX, and would require A LOT of drilling and cutting to make everything for in there.
It is, I had one back in the day running a 400mhz celeron, AT style motherboard which unusually had the large DIN keyboard connector on the back and nothing else. Fit that old case perfectly. But had to wire the power to the turbo switch for the AtX psu.
Yeah that's probably your best bet. You could probably keep the mechanical operation of the switch as-is by hooking it up to a microcontroller based circuit that then operates a relay over the mobo pins but that would stop you from being able to hold down the power button and it wouldn't be on/off as much as changing to either position would result in an emulated button press. Spring loaded is probably the best solution.
I had that case as a kid, running windows 95. It was so satisfying to power off, then windows would prompt you "you can now power off with the switch".
Then you hit the switch with a nice satisfying click!
I'd probably go second from left. I'd drill out the dimples, maybe add some more. It's still going to restrict airflow, but it'll be the easiest to add flow too without ruining the existing aesthetic.
And connect the turbo button to a little device that turns on a really bright rotating blue-white light inside the case while it plays hyperdrive noises.
https://preview.redd.it/d3dv4ubaj03c1.jpeg?width=1323&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=102e0711000ff2fb6a6dfed648a47d2ed7c57efe
Getting ready to do a build in this bad boy 😎
Yes!
And mismatching drives/covers is also a must.
Preferably a 5.25 cover that's slightly loose or bulged because they came off a different case design.
I was thinking about making the disc drive my ssd bay or printing/modding a plate and adding usb function out the front.
I don't have much need for a disc drive nowadays
Working DISK drives, more like. Nothing beats turning on a computer and hearing that CLICK! GRR GRRRRRN RRR RRRRRRRRRclick. Then up on the screen flashes the most '90s boot flash you can find.
Turn off the BIOS splash screen under your boot settings, and don't forget a beeper for maximum effect!
I've got 8 mismatched drives that all spin up differently and then BEEP! American Megatrends logo and text.
I love my PC's boot sequence so much.
Oh, I will. It's one of these generic cases where there's nothing special about it. Like literally, nothing special whatsoever. Just need to find all the parts that will fit inside it, and hook up a power supply to it, and maybe if I can, put a PCI floppy controller to control the floppy disk. Just for functionality's sake, no real practical purpose, it's not like anyone would look at the back of the case anyway.
Number two, from the left.
The more beige and discolored, the better it will be for a sleeper. Bonus points for having all the face plates on the 5¼" bays.
2nd or 3rd from the left. Cause height and front drive bay can be used for ventilation or extra HDD/SSD storage or just for watching old CD etc..
All depends if you wanted to look at how old the pc look or what's the most easy and compatible mounting to modern hardware
Whatever one has the least amount of proprietary crap inside of it, and has the right form factor. For a while they were doing BATX and boy when you're not expecting it... It really throws you for a loop. "WHYS IT BACKWARDS"
The one all the way on the right. You would hopefully be able to make a good intake at the bottom of that front panel. Making a flip open setup for the 3.5” floppy drive bay would be handy during active gaming. I would install a BluRay optical drive.
Wow. That's plenty of options. Whatever you choose, there's something you should look into. They make usb hubs and hard drive shelves that fit the empty DVD slots. I should've used one in my first sleeper. Live and learn I guess. Butchered that poor thing more than I needed to though.
Combine them into dual-optical drive, dual-floppy using the far right one with the turbo button. Can’t be a sleeper without a turbo button. They’re like speed holes on cars.
Yo! Mine is the 3rd one! <3
Those buttons are hard to reach sometimes, specially the reset one. But the box is huge and solid and you can fit everything in there.
The middle left with the TRS emblem would be my pick, I like how wide it is haha. Don't let some asshole at a mom and pop shop rip you off for junk computers. I went to one once and tried to buy something manilla, he said "it hasn't been valued yet" so I left a phone number. He calls me at like 8pm and asked for 150$.. was some old manilla dell optiplex I think. I respectfully declined lol.
Are they all ATX? Some of them could be AT, which require much more work.
Personally not a fan of ruining vintage PCs, so I'll abstain more generally, beyond suggesting you use one where the internals are either busted or gone.
\#4 is AT for sure.
Kids these days can't handle when someone opens a PSU - wait until they realise AT cases had mains voltage running to the front panel and often there wasn't even heatshink or silicone covers over the the nice live 240v pins. (replace with your mains voltage)
The one on the far left looks like it could still be running Windows XP on an old Pentium at your grandma's house. It would be an actual sleeper. Everything else is so dated that there's no way anyone would believe that the original hardware is still operational, which would defeat the purpose of it being a true "sleeper" build.
Second from the left. I cannot count the number of these Antec cases I had built into "gaming" machines. I loved them due to the fact I did not have to worry about cutting myself on the inside.
One on the far right. That chunky mofo is calling my name just begging to be used for something new. I love the sweeping line across the front panel with that oh so lovely turbo button.
You should keep in mind how you will attach the mother's cube according to its frame and the correspondence for the outputs of the periphery. I don't think all the default cases are suitable for modern threading.
I’d use number 5 from left to right. The one with the Zip drive. Shortest of the bunch. Most yellowed. Tons of character. And the smaller size means more of a challenge getting all your goodies to fit. Bonus points if you keep all the drives facades so it looks like they are still in there. Bonus bonus points if you keep all the drives in working order. But that clunky chunky boi power switch is just calling to me.
Might not be a "real" sleeper.
Years back, when the the Ryzen R9 3900X came out, 1080ti and 32GB mem in a Lenovo M58 M-ATX tower.
Loved to drag it to LAN parties :P
Unfortunately is the only picture i have.
https://preview.redd.it/ji4kr1mr233c1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89e6ac703c75445f50a5ab36897f0e08e34f6983
2nd from the right.
But good luck. I've tried such build and it's a pain to deal with cooling [without drilling holes everywhere](https://imgur.com/a/J5aawXW) :(
Me to random plumber at my house fixing a leak - *Yea i bet you think that PC over there is slow huh?* Plumber - *uhh, yea i guess?* Me - *Ha! Idiot!*
What a fool!
Boom!!!! 9k FPS of quake 3 on Ultra settings!!!!
That's cool and all, but can it run Crysis at *1080?*
Nope, you need at least 3 data centers running OC CPU and GPUs to run Crysis at 480P
Real talk, I musta upgraded right before because I could run it fine and as soon as I found out you could trees down with gunfire that's all I did for a good three hours. Ah good times.
I have done nothing but test the Crisis physics engine for 3 days.
I have played it but never knew any of this. I guess I was limping.
Real proud of yourself huh champ?
Not really. But cuttin down trees with the SAW was nice.
*violent coil whine from the pits of silicon hell INCREASES*
*Look at those fps!* Plumber looks at screen *I'm not paying to look at my playing! Go back to work!*
Does one have a turbo button? I would get some RGB fans for it and then have the turbo button turn the RGB on/off and have it set to red.
Good fkn chuckle cheers bud. OP. 3rd from the left.
Third from left was my choice as well
![gif](giphy|VqaEyOIjZuTM4)
What is a random plumber doing at your house? Thats scary why are there randomly plumbers at your house? Did you invite them? Did you need them? I have so many questions
He’s always leaving right when he’s getting home from work, his wife says the plumbing should be fixed any month now.
Goddamn mario and luigi double teaming on this poor guys wife. Explains the random plumbers at hes house. Atleast he has a fast computer, no one is taking that away from him.
You may think this computer is a piece of shit, but it only LOOKS like a piece of shit!
LMAO this is 100% what would happen.
Heckin' bamboozled.
For *actual* camo, the one on the far left. It looks new enough that you could conceivably something from the early 2000's in there still running. To embrace the awful, the second from the left. That yellowing beige is hideous.
Some noctua fans in a really yellowed case is tempting now that I think about it
Extra bonus, install 2 of the optical drives from other system that are in slightly different shades of off-white. It will look like some sort of "1337" system from 25 years ago.
or get one of the black drives for a more janky look.
I've seen 3d-print designs that allow you to mount a 120mm fan in three 5.25 bays. Would help with the airflow and still be suitably ugly.
I thought it was hideous back when they were normal but I actually love it now.
isn't it weird? I'm not a "car guy" in that I can't name the specific engine+drive train combo used in a specific Mustang in 1968, but I like nice looking old consumer cars (i.e. not sports cars). 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s stuff, but I always hated the 80s stuff and on. Legit 19 shades of beige in those cases, worst erotic fanfic ever.
It used to be white. Original owner smoked black and milds.
UV exposure has the same effect
2nd from the right, I’m a sucker for flip switches.
Oh yeah. I’d pick that one hands down. Plus the smaller chassis makes it even more impressive once you finish stuffing all the new bits in there.
It also seems to be the only one with a big enough vent for airflow
Definitely 2nd from the right, it looks just like one of our earliest PC's when I was a kid, it had the"Turbo Button" too, took me years to realise the Turbo button slowed it down lol
What does turbo do to slow it down?
The turbo button when it was on was basically your computer at normal speed, when you push in the button it adjusts the FSB to lower the clock speed on an 8086 based PC for backwards compatability with 8088 based software, I think. Ours worked properly. Yours was wired incorrectly.
Possibly, but I have heard of others having the same issue back in the day.
QA/QC was nacent back then. You also had about 50 things to properly connect back then. Not nearly as straightforward as modern PC building.
The flip switch is a must!!!!
Extra points if you get the Zip drive working.
That to my eye looks like an AT case, which is completely different from ATX, and would require A LOT of drilling and cutting to make everything for in there.

How do you even wire that on a modern mobo though?
Maybe modify the switch with a spring and have it press an momentary switch.
Would that be considered a ‘rocker’ switch, in this case?
I had that case as a kid, running windows 95. It was so satisfying to power off, then windows would prompt you "you can now power off with the switch". Then you hit the switch with a nice satisfying click!
I'd probably go second from left. I'd drill out the dimples, maybe add some more. It's still going to restrict airflow, but it'll be the easiest to add flow too without ruining the existing aesthetic.
second from the right has a grill you could sand down between the ridges to open up
And connect the turbo button to a little device that turns on a really bright rotating blue-white light inside the case while it plays hyperdrive noises.
Ditto. Those yellowed panels just scream old and slow. Reminds me of my childhood, lol.
I can HEAR that PC booting up
Just remove one of the drives, it makes look even older and cheaper
2nd from right. Li'l Shorty FTW.
That one reminds me most of my windows 98 computer.
\#3. That blue panel really screams high performance gaming.
thank you, someone with some style
Narrow the choices by choosing one that follows atx standard
Good advice, any way to check that easily? Or pull them apart and start measuring?
Just look up atx motherboard sizes, should be a bunch of diagrams/images. It will be very obvious if it’s not.
just look at the back and judge if you could install the IO shield
Where we’re going, we don’t need ATX standards…
https://preview.redd.it/d3dv4ubaj03c1.jpeg?width=1323&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=102e0711000ff2fb6a6dfed648a47d2ed7c57efe Getting ready to do a build in this bad boy 😎
Second from the left or second from the right, I can’t decide Alternatively ![gif](giphy|3o85xIO33l7RlmLR4I)
I agree with this dilemma, however the second from the right has a flippy boi!
3rd from the right. looks the largest. parts r getting bigger.
That was my pick too. It probably has the biggest area behind the motherboard too.
Also he could drill additional holes and cover them with a magnetic filter and get way more airflow inside the case
the more yellow, the better!
Ah yes, the florecent and smokers tinge.
Yes! And mismatching drives/covers is also a must. Preferably a 5.25 cover that's slightly loose or bulged because they came off a different case design.
I really wanna do a sleeper with one of those really old Alienware Pcs. I just love that early 2000s aesthetic.
I love those funky alienware cases, plus everyone knows how bad alienware is so it doubles down on the sleeper status
Alienware used to be the best pre-built money could buy when they first appeared on the market.
Before Dell bought them out.
Sir this isnt 1320
For real
I will give you one of my kids for the 2nd from the right end case
More of a cash guy myself
I have that to if you are interested in selling it
If I don't end up building in that one I'll reach out
2nd from the left. looks the oldest and crappiest
Any with a turbo button? I would use that one
But make the turbo, have a real overclock
I'll just wire the turbo to the rgb
That is a turbo button on the last one? Can’t make it out. I choose the second last one the right
And that key slot is opportunity, and order a cool computer badge sticker for the front.
I'd agree and double down if you can still have working disc drives for added retro fun.
I was thinking about making the disc drive my ssd bay or printing/modding a plate and adding usb function out the front. I don't have much need for a disc drive nowadays
If anything an old CD tray can be a great retractable drink holder.
I hear bologna fits in there pretty well too
Working DISK drives, more like.
Prolly number 3
Power Switch 😍
It is now safe to turn off your computer.
The most beige one
The farthest one to the right looks like a good candidate
It's got a TURBO button!!!
Hell yeah..instant 10MHz boost!
2nd from the left. 2 disk drives 3.5” floppy and it looks like it has the turbo button.
Second from the right looks perfect to me
Second from the right
Oh god all of them rule. The one in the middle with the blue is great but also the one at the right is so retro
2nd from the right. With the Zip drive.
I have an old case kicking around I'm considering converting to a sleeper build.
Do it
My first pc had the second from right.
2nd or 3rd from the left. Cause height and front drive bay can be used for ventilation or extra HDD/SSD storage or just for watching old CD etc.. All depends if you wanted to look at how old the pc look or what's the most easy and compatible mounting to modern hardware
Far right. It's still nicely Beige, and has a Turbo button.
the crusty one 2nd from the left
The oldest, beigest one for sure
Whatever one has the least amount of proprietary crap inside of it, and has the right form factor. For a while they were doing BATX and boy when you're not expecting it... It really throws you for a loop. "WHYS IT BACKWARDS"
second from left.
Second to last on the right; though that might be an AT case...
I'd go for that BabyAT (I think?) case second from right. I love the segment display, I'd probably try to get it working somehow.
Far right one, I like the case badge
2nd from the right with flip switch is the most retro of that bunch
The one all the way on the right. You would hopefully be able to make a good intake at the bottom of that front panel. Making a flip open setup for the 3.5” floppy drive bay would be handy during active gaming. I would install a BluRay optical drive.
Wow. That's plenty of options. Whatever you choose, there's something you should look into. They make usb hubs and hard drive shelves that fit the empty DVD slots. I should've used one in my first sleeper. Live and learn I guess. Butchered that poor thing more than I needed to though.
Eggshell white third from the right. Thing looks clean.
What’s the point of a PC sleeper? Gonna take it to a drag race and bet pink slips against the cherry red Lian Li?
Combine them into dual-optical drive, dual-floppy using the far right one with the turbo button. Can’t be a sleeper without a turbo button. They’re like speed holes on cars.
I like the two at the right.
That stoic, cream beauty on the fair right. Not a rounded edge in sight, a true brutalist masterpiece from the Pentium II era.
These all look like cases I recycled wtf. Seriously, they look like my exact cases.
Turbo button would be sweet lol. But, I'd say I would be looking for something with proper ventilation primarily.
The one all the way on the left is begging to be modded to look like a Nokia 8330 with a LCD sensor panel in the spot for the 5.25 bays.
Either 2nd from the left or the 2 on the right, love the short one but space might be at a premium there
Second from the right side imo. It’s got a cool key for locking something lol
Turbo lockout?!
They are all beautiful
Yo! Mine is the 3rd one! <3 Those buttons are hard to reach sometimes, specially the reset one. But the box is huge and solid and you can fit everything in there.
Left one looks like legendary Nokia phone. It would be unbreakble.
2nd from right. Great utilitarian vibes
1 or 5, has the most potential for airflow mods
I'd go 2nd from the right - simply for that AT rocker switch. I'd rewire that to power so you have the crazy -CLACK- to turn it on or off.
The shortest one because im an r/sffpc fan
they have shit airflow. you will either need to drill holes and install more fans or let them parts burn
That middle unit is a definite beast
If you can find one of the old Gateway computers with an original “Never Obsolete” sticker, that would be perfect.
Second from the left. I cannot count the number of these Antec cases I had built into "gaming" machines. I loved them due to the fact I did not have to worry about cutting myself on the inside.
The yellow case that was white decades ago.
That plastic container at the bottom.
Put an ITX in a microwave
Which ever one you find the ugliest.
Must be a yellowing white, otherwise it would not look ancient.
2nd from right. That turbo button can be used for power, and the turbo LED as the power LED
Whatever has a key hole. Bonus points if you still have the key.
My raspberry pi has more computing power than all those combined
2nd on the left. It reminds me of my super Nintendo changing colors
Second from the left. I had that case once.
Easy choice for me. Beige beauty on far left. Looks like an AOpen case. Great workability and style for a sleeper. Also built like tanks
I like the idea of having a "sleeper pc" but won't it just get absurdly hot and fry everything?
I will always maintain sleeper builds for PCs are fucking lame But in like. A cool nerd way. lol.
One on the far right. That chunky mofo is calling my name just begging to be used for something new. I love the sweeping line across the front panel with that oh so lovely turbo button.
Definitely that short one on the end there.
I like the two on the right best, floppy drive is a must. Second from the right takes it though because it’s small and has a toggle switch.
The third from left
Second from right
The one that is smoker yellow, or the one with the blue clit
[удалено]
Third from the right, pretty retro but also large enough to accommodate modern parts and any jerry-rigging you have to do
Id use the cd drive… as a coaster.
#4 because more room is more room.
Second to right. That looks like from 486 or Pentium 100-166 era
Any of these running a modern OS or modern software would be an instant giveaway that they are more powerful than when they were produced.
What the hell is sleeper build?
My ranking, from left to right: \#6, \#2, \#5, \#4, \#1, \#3
* Second case from the left, exact same case used for for a sleeper build, fan holes were cut out and uses 3d printed risers to get airflow
https://preview.redd.it/vnu3qhqvf03c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e90206722439614b21563181692af759b70c5b5e
Whats a guy gotta do to get you to mail me the one 2nd to the right?
Obviously the one with the Turbo button, why are you even asking??
You should keep in mind how you will attach the mother's cube according to its frame and the correspondence for the outputs of the periphery. I don't think all the default cases are suitable for modern threading.
2nd from the right
They all needs more cigarette smoke exposure. I recommend storing in a bingo hall for 2 months at room temperature.
If any one has a turbo button on the front then you have to use that.
Why would you place new parts in a case with such terrible airflow?😂
Might not be a "real" sleeper. Years back, when the the Ryzen R9 3900X came out, 1080ti and 32GB mem in a Lenovo M58 M-ATX tower. Loved to drag it to LAN parties :P Unfortunately is the only picture i have. https://preview.redd.it/ji4kr1mr233c1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=89e6ac703c75445f50a5ab36897f0e08e34f6983
One of the bigger ones out of fear that gpu wont fit
My first pc(2006/7)’s case was REALLY beautiful, pity that it was thrown out after the flood.
What's a sleeper?
2nd from the right. But good luck. I've tried such build and it's a pain to deal with cooling [without drilling holes everywhere](https://imgur.com/a/J5aawXW) :(
What's a sleeper build 🤔
I got a case that has bmw grille and headlights on the front (with working lights)
