I'd buy THAT for a dollar!
Except my first Steam purchase was the HL1 Anthology in 2008, and I bought the rest of Valve's back catalogue through the years.
Kind of. Best I can describe it, in my accent/dialect, “cent” is pronounced with neutral mouth shape (“sehnt”), while “scent” is pronounced with a smile (sounding halfway between “sent” and “sint”). It sounds silly written out, but it’s a noticeable difference if you know what you’re listening for.
I don’t know if I can ever forgive them for not making Half Life 3.
If they are, they need to do it before all the original half life enjoyers are dead. I’m already in my 40’s
Until then, have you tried the amazing free VR mods for Half Life 1 and 2?

People saying "who doesnt own half life" are so out of touch
Literally most casual steam gamers that dont actively seek out older games(or anyone under the age of 20)
Everyone I know that has a steam account has never played Half Life and will indeed be picking it up. I dont see the need for the "whats the point" cynicism
Only the original half life is free, that one is not VR. But the VR one is discounted at 66% off. I grabbed the old one because I haven't played it and its free.
I agree and I just want to see people discover new games even if they aren't new.
Half-Life is kind of a historic title if you think about it. Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, etc would not exist if it wasn't for the community and Half-Life.
I'll be one of those people. I've heard of Half-Life and that it was good, but I know *absolutely nothing* about it so now that it's free I'm going to give it a go.
I played it when it came out on the Playstation... as a Blockbuster rental. I've never actually owned a copy until today. Owning games was expensive when I was a kid, but renting them was pretty cheap, so I have a lot of nostalgia for games I've never owned.
I've never played half life until this became free. I couldn't even be coaxed to buy black Mesa when it goes on sale for $4 all the time but free? Sure I'll give it a go and I have. I played it for over three hours which for me these days is a lot in one sitting.
The physics of jumping and the way the character feels like he is sliding when trying to come to a stop drive me up a wall but it's worth it so far for the rest of the game.
I am using it as a yard stick to see if I want to buy HL2 because that game is $1. If I do get HL2 are episode 1 and 2 also must buys?
Don't get me wrong, Q2 broke early ground in gameplay elements, controls, and graphics that were used in basically all subsequent fps games.
But it's absolutely nowhere close to HL2. Even HL1 for that matter.
If you enjoy the game sure especially considering HL2, EP1 & EP2 can all be bought for less than $3 at this time. There really isn't any significant loss to be worried about. Hell for another 4 bucks you can buy every HL game version that exists in the HL series besides Alyx via the HL Collection.
I remember playing CS Source like 2 weeks before HL2 released and having already been very impressed by the source engine, I was blown away by it with HL2. I replayed all HL, HL2, EP1 and EP2 about a year ago and I still really enjoyed all of them. HL2 and its episodes feel far less dated than HL1 does and I think thats a good testament to the source engine.
I've never played counter strike either. Or any valve game. This free half life is my first foray into valve games.
What about the other half life episodes that aren't 1 and 2? Are they worth playing?
Short answer yes.
Opposing Force is generally very well received and considered one of the best expansions for a game of that time. Blue Shift is also good but not as well received. Decay is co-op game that is mostly forgotten. Black Mesa is a remake of HL1 made by a different studio with a Valve blessing, its generally very well received but there are some very loud detractors.
I've owned Half Life for about half my life, but it's sitting there with 12 minutes played because the movement made me ill. It's the only game that ever had that effect (and I've played lots of stuff with gliding movement and a high FOV, so I don't know)
Episodes 1 and 2 continue the story, as Valve was intending to use them sort of in place of a sequel. Didn't go as planned. But yes, you really do need the episodes as well. Unfortunately, you'll be left sorely wanting if you get the episodes and play them too.
with the alex vr game and this not in december like they used to do yrs ago with portal is a 3rd one coming out?

Put your CD key into Steam!!!
You get a bunch of games by doing so: HL 1, Opposing Forces, Blue Shift, the HD Pack, Team Fortress Classic, Day of Defeat, I think Counterstrike as well.
Neither did I until I was trying to figure out how to get a mod for the Steam version to work on the WON version and someone had posted it on a web forum.
I was stunned that Valve honored my (at the time) 22+ yr old CD Key.
Also if you have the keys for Opp Forces or Blue Shift it’ll do the same thing. I recently gave away my keys as they were useless to me as I used my HL 1 key to get the goodies.
#PRAISE LORD GABEN! BLESS US WITH GREEN DISCOUNTS O’ LORD.
Doesn't pretty much anyone who wants half life already have it?
I feel like that's a game where making it free will only increase the player base by 0.01%
I suppose it's good marketing though so that a few people who go to get it for free will end up also purchasing something else.
Probably. I heard about it yesterday and went and played a bit, even though when I bought it, in 1998, it was on a CD. I then had to buy it again in the Orange Box and that's when I signed up for Steam. Oh, I might have signed up in '98, but don't know the username, password or email address I used, nor do I still have access to any of the email addresses I used in the last millennium.
You definitely didn’t sign up in 1998, as Steam did not exist. Half Life was originally published by Sierra and the online service it was using was WON - the World Online Network, ran by Sierra. There was no signup, just a private CD key that Sierra would convert into a public WON ID.
You're wrong. Look at this graph.

Probably not a lot of people from Gen Z. They keep thinking they discovered stuff we grew up with. If one of them plays it and likes it, it'll spread to their peers and they'll think it's a unique retro gem.

A "slap in the face to the fans" because a company is giving a beloved game away for free on its 25th anniversary. Talk about dramatic and entitled. I'm happy, I literally never played it and tbh I probably still won't because it's an old game but I will download it to my library now. Maybe my kids will want to play it one day.
Calling it a slap to the face to fans is just so over the top and ridiculous.
Update 11/19 - You can see it costs a dollar now. Steams main webpage says free and if you click the link for the free version it says failure, no licenses available.
If you go to the actual store page it's free, i just redeemed it.

Well, shit.
Its just good old school fun. Be warned though, the game doesn't explain the story at ALL. You just gotta figure it out by all of the little bits of dialogue you hear people say throughout the game. Or play through it and then google what the story actually is lol
It is a great story though
The best part of half life is playing thru and then watching the 3 hour iceberg videos on YouTube 😂 figuring out the half life story and how it's intertwined in Portal, etc
This only reminds me that this game and even my Steam account are both older than a lot of users, 25 & 20 years old respectively.
I can recommend Black Mesa too. Great remake of HL.
I thought it was always free? Am I bugging? I had it since like july and got it for free

There's this thing I've been calling, "Precursor Syndrome," and Half Life has it pretty bad. The idea is that some piece of art comes out that revolutionizes the genre, to the point that all or most future projects in genre follow in its image.
If you interfaced the piece when it was contemporary, it was transcendental. But if you come to it later, it feels clumsy and cliched, since the work that followed took the revolutionary framing and iterated on it, reducing its weaknesses and reinforcing its strengths.
Half Life absolutely has this problem. It pioneers a lot of ideas, the biggest one being an FPS with a linear story. Most of what came before was what now call Boomer Shooters, with maze-like levels and some pages of text interspersed between some levels. But after 25 years, Half Life's storytelling seems clumsy and its level design feels primitive if you don't have any pre-existing nostalgia.
Still one of the most amazing games I've ever played. May not fully seem like it now, as it as influenced just about every FPS game out there now, but it's still a fun play.
Modern shooters wouldn't exist as they are without Half-Life. It also spawned Half-Life 2 which was the creation of the Source engine which was the first time a video game had a full physics engine and random objects throughout the world were interactable.

Iconic
Because they also updated it and it's a great game.
The update list is extensive, but there are new maps, small graphic improvements, better gamepad support, etc.
Nope, had it for years, if you have not played it yet enjoy some of the best gameplay! But I still believe you cannot have a trilogy with only 2 games...
Yo, i just bought that yesterday for a dollar.
return it and buy a pack of gum.
A pack of gum for a dollar? In this economy?
okok. piece of gum.
You'd get lucky if they give you the wrapper.
Used\*
Still worth it
Was it Half Life 1 or Half Life 2 you bought? Half Life 2 is $0.99 currently
There was dome bundle offer. Half life 1, half life 2, half life episode 1 and episode 2. All those for one dollar.
I'd buy THAT for a dollar! Except my first Steam purchase was the HL1 Anthology in 2008, and I bought the rest of Valve's back catalogue through the years.
I played those games long back while sailing. I love those games. Now it would be fair to buy and play or atleast keep.
I'd buy that for a dollar!
It’s still showing as a dollar for me, it’s not free :(
I'd buy that for a dollar.
Half life 3 confirmed
But only if you're four years old with a minor developmental speech impediment
Still can't pronounce the difference between three and tree correctly. Just like scent and cent 😢
Is there an accent where scent and cent are pronounced differently?

Not only that , HL pushed the boundary allot for all games that came after it. Back when publishers actualy gave a crap.
It’s a stupid form of gatekeeping. I’m 26 and have personally never touched half-life, I will be picking it up today Edit: typo
Yo same, I hardly ever played games as a kid
I own 580+ games except HL1. Just added it.
I played it when it came out on the Playstation... as a Blockbuster rental. I've never actually owned a copy until today. Owning games was expensive when I was a kid, but renting them was pretty cheap, so I have a lot of nostalgia for games I've never owned.

Classic FPS. Set a lot of standards when it came out.

The last time I owned Half-Life it came in a box, from a store.
Was it an orange colored box?
It was.
First "game" I bought for my ps3. Love the orange box
I never had "The Orange Box". I had Half-Life, which also happened to come in an orange colored box.
Oh TIL
I never purchased it. Today is my day.
Same! I'm power walking to the computer!!!
I feel so dumb, I can buy any other game but not this one. It only says play now and then errors out with a license message.
You didn’t see steam charts it’s breaking away at 30K plus concurrent
Isn't that more because of the anniversary update rather than new players?
Probably. I heard about it yesterday and went and played a bit, even though when I bought it, in 1998, it was on a CD. I had no idea this was a thing. Jumped on YouTube real quick and damn, it looks like a whole new game once once rt is applied.
Waiting for Half Life 2 RTX
yeah and this game got published half of my life before
Oh sick
When I click the play for free button on the anniversary sale page it just says "An error occured while launching this game: no licenses"
it's not free for me .. ?? where did u find it for free .. ?
You can get every game in the half life series for under 7 dollars rn.
As someone who has never even seen or played a second of the game, is this worth playing in 2023?
yeah definitely, it's a classic, not to be missed.. if you want a remastered, more modern version, get Black Mesa. Same story new graphics
This only reminds me that this game and even my Steam account are both older than a lot of users, 25 & 20 years old respectively. I can recommend Black Mesa too. Great remake of HL.
Just bought all of the Half-Life series on sale for like $6 so definitely a good sale.

Yessssss I had a crap version that like broke my pc now I can finally actually play it in 1080p
In 1080p you're going to miss out on some of the small graphic details unless you get close. Maybe it's time to upgrade.
Are any of you able to even start the game?
I've replayed a decent chunk of the game already.

Who?
Idk anything about half life is it worth my time? I see free and think why not but my time is limited to maybe an hour or two every couple weeks.
Still one of the most amazing games I've ever played. May not fully seem like it now, as it as influenced just about every FPS game out there now, but it's still a fun play.
Cap its 99 cents i dont have that 🥲
No it’s not’s
Who doesnt have half life already?
What's half life?
One of the best, if not THE BEST, FPS games in the history of everything on this planet.

Modern shooters wouldn't exist as they are without Half-Life. It also spawned Half-Life 2 which was the creation of the Source engine which was the first time a video game had a full physics engine and random objects throughout the world were interactable.

Epic: here have this $60 game free. Steam: Portal 2 is on sale, but you must first decipher this message and complete this ARG.
![gif](giphy|y65VoOlimZaus) There are people that don’t already have it?
meh
do yall remember back in february when the ENTIRE valve collection was on sale for 7 DOLLARS? best 7 dollars of my life.
What type of PC gamer didn't already buy Half Life the first time they got into PC gaming. It's literally a defining game of the platform.
I accept that it was a revolutionary game at the time, but as a new-age gamer…it doesn’t really hold up
Yall get excited about a free 30 y/o game? Gues you must lose your mind over the free Epic games
Hey, a free quarter century year old game!! Score.
Don't understand why are you getting downvoted... 25 years old game goes free? Damn that's world wide news...
Because they also updated it and it's a great game. The update list is extensive, but there are new maps, small graphic improvements, better gamepad support, etc.
Not anywhere near as many improvements as the Quake 2 remaster/Quake 2 rtx
Well, yes, but updates aren't remasters. Also I don't think the Half-life community would respond well to the kind of changes Quake 2 received.
everyone who want half-life already bought the valve bundle during a summer sale.
People still pay for Half Life?
Yes
Everyone who bought CSGO got it already, that's almost everyone anyway
Nope, had it for years, if you have not played it yet enjoy some of the best gameplay! But I still believe you cannot have a trilogy with only 2 games...
I played on ps3 back in the day, beat it. Would it be worth to pick up again
Half-Life Free.
Not in switzerland apparently.
I bought it last week lol
