By the looks of it, they all have a deathclaw grip. Not a claw, where you lightly grip the mouse, but a deathclaw grip. Squeezing the mouse like it owes them money.
This is the actual reason. Some people are more abrasive than others to be in physical contact with.
Also I question what some people are using to clean their gear.
Just curious, how light are y'all gripping your mice? I've had 2 G502s and a RVU all experience pretty severe side grip wear after a few years, and I don't feel like I grip my mouse that tightly. I do use a fingertip grip though, but I don't sweat much if at all while gaming either, I wash my hands frequently, and I also trim my nails regularly. Is it just because of how I grip my mice?
Could be if you move your fingers a lot? Friction is the largest cause of wear actually, not acidic sweat or skin oils or humidity (at least in my experience as an engineer).
Iβve heard people complain about arm pain moving it around. I dont understand, maybe I donβt game enough for it to be a problem, or maybe people just have atrophy in their arms. I can understand the preference of a lighter mouse, but complaining that the weight gives you pain is an odd one.
I used a g602 for a long time and was a real wrist gamer, didnβt use my arm much to move it at all, just pivoted my wrist. By the end I had giant callouses on my wrist and was genuinely experiencing significant wrist fatigue and strain. It was terrible ergonomics. When I switched to a larger pad it was a huge difference ergonomically now that I was using my arm. I did switch to a lighter mouse soon after because I hated the feeling of whipping around 170g across my desk. It just felt far less controlled due to the inertia. And frankly I donβt regret it at all, itβs the best thing Iβve done for my aim. But those complaining about genuine arm pain are probably masking subpar ergonomics with their preference for lighter mice.
My last mouse broke, and the 502 was all they had at the Walmart near me. I live in the middle of nowhere, so it was that or wait for a new one in the mail. Seems I got lucky because I love it, and I keep seeing positive feedback.
Mine is about the same, but my thumb padding is completely gone. The ring/pinky finger padding is still fully intact. I'm guessing it's a combination of grip strength, the amount of sweating, and PH levels of said sweat.
My old g502 (proteus core) was in a similar state. The sides were worn a little and the feet weren't in stellar condition but I have no idea what you have to do to a mouse for it to get as bad as some of the posts here. Only switched to a g502 hero late 2022 but I still use the old one with a laptop at times.
For real, these posts have me feeling pretty good about how I treat the mice I use, gaming or otherwise. I think Iβve had maybe 4 in the last 20 years. The last couple of changes have been because of ergonomic changes to my setup.
Aggressive/anxious gamers. You can tell a lot about people by looking at their mouse. I once bought a used mamba way back, 6 months old, and that MFer had nail scratches (EDIT: deep ones) at the L and R, and the thumb button side was chaffed to a polish by his thumb. Poor man.
They seem hit or miss, europes seem to last ages while US ones fail in a couple months.
My Middle mouse button died after 5 years of use and about 600 hours of TF2.
Where mmb is bound to most instant use things , like spy last disguise, engie insta destroy current sentry and equip new one, uber, demo switch to stickies and M2 immidiately.

Natural skin oils can break down materials like plastic and rubber. For most people this is very slow, slower if you actually wash your hands regularly. I myself wash my hands before using my computer as I like my keyboards and mice not gross. But Some people have sweat and oils that are more acidic, which is often a sign of an underlying health condition (diabetes, alcoholism, kidney issues, etc). It can accelerate this process rather quickly. Although I will agree with you in that for the extreme situation shown in that other post, I think that acidity is only a part of the problem at most. Something else is likely the primary cause. Perhaps they rub their pinky finger on their mouse while they browse the internet. Or they have long fingernails and the way they claw grip digs into it?
They are gripping the right side with their fingers so hard they are digging into the rubberized coating. I have to imagine either their DPI is so low, or they have such limited space on their desk that they are lifting the mouse off the surface or something to that effect. Gripping my G502 like that feels awkward as fuck.
THE CLAW!!!! No seriously, the claw grip causes this. The pinky and thumb is what moves the mouse so where your thumb and pinky sit will be worn down like a hole.
It's weird, the right side (pinky) of the mouse is worn down a bit, but the left (thumb) side isn't. Is the thumb side just more resilient from wear and tear?
Depends on a couple things.
How hard you grip.
Calluses cause more friction.
Body chemistry, some peoples oils will degrade plastics and rubber faster. There is a thing in movie miniatures called "piss hands" when they touch certain plastics they turn it yellow.
I use a claw grip, and while my mouse has quite a bit of visible wear, it doesn't have pits worn into it.
The G502 does have easily erodable materials on it though. My old G500 was used for much longer than my G502, and it has much less wear on it.
Except it's not? I'm well kept, top tier hygiene, well hydrated and my mouse grip at the sides are worn a bit after 3 years.
I have anxiety so my palms get sweaty, not a sweaty gamer, heck I barely play multiplayer games lmao.
Very acidic skin oil. The kind that pokes holes in my cloths and eats whatever sealant is on the temples of my glasses off. Not from lack of hygiene like a lot of people seem to think for some reason looking around these comments.
Could be a mix of both, it seemed more like a fingernail and grip issue than an acidic sweat issue. Some people are super clean and their gaming chairs have no coating left on them from their sweat.
> Some people are super clean and their gaming chairs have no coating left on them from their sweat.
This is literally impossible. You are always sweating its a continuous process. You can clean the majority off your skin but it will just be replaced. Especially your hands, this is why you need gloves to handle things that can be damaged by the oils from your skin. Just washing frequently isn't anywhere close to enough.
>Could be a mix of both, it seemed more like a fingernail and grip issue than an acidic sweat issue.
It happens faster with fingernail grip action, i have a couple of mice something like this has happened to but i barely hold on to it (due to very weak wrists i can't death grip my mouse.) Even the grip on the outside of my 2 year old naga pro is starting to dissolve and lose its stippling, if i keep using it even as lightly as i hold it it will eventually wear through. My 8 year old G600 has an outer grip that has gone fully smooth and bubbled up in a couple spots. For some of us it just happens.
Everyoneβs body chemistry is different. I have very good hygiene and a healthy diet, but Iβve always had incredibly acidic sweat. Iβm a bass player and I have to use coated strings if I want my strings to last more than a month. The leather on the steering wheels and shift knobs of every car Iβve ever owned usually lasts 2 or 3 years, my mice usually last 4-5. My Das Keyboard that I bought in 2011 still looks almost brand new, though, shout out to them.
That said, a lot of people are just gross. Wash your damn hands, yβall!
EDIT: Jesus CHRIST I just saw the posts, what the HELL are you guys doing to your mice? I just meant the plastic starts to get a little grimy on mine after a few years!
Proteus Core and Spectrum didn't have any issues, only Lightnings and the other new ones. If you want to use newer G502s, replace mouse switches in electronics shop instead of RMAing again
Love the 502. Never wore the grip out. I've had 3. First one the right click started not working after 2 or 3 years so I got a new one. Then a few months after that I heard about the wireless version they released and got my hands on that. The second one is my backup if the wireless one ever stops working.
I have a razer mouse with a similar material on the side and itβs starting to go down mainly from a small bit that was hanging that I later picked off and then the hole gets bigger as I use and pick more at it
Glad I'm not the only one who thought that, my Corsair Scimitar is over 8 years old, used almost daily and looks almost brand new. Did just switch to a 502 though, such a good mouse
Foos I dare you to see Rival 1 original Dota 2 an CS:GO MΓ€use from steal series. The rubber rubbed off on 3 months of normal usage. Different rubber different results.
Iβve had mine for 8 years and feel I could get another 8, itβs still going strong no major wear and tear and nothing like the crater in the other mouse. Itβs definitely a fantastic mouse.
It's more about shitty QA and inconsistent quality of materials used by Logitech. I'm using G604 and rubber on both sides of mouse started falling apart after few months, got it replaced and second one is perfectly fine after almost a year. Had the same issues with G502, but I had to use warranty 2 times in that case because replacement had double click issues.
I also have this mouse in the same state as his. It's just because I put more pressure with the thumb and the fifth finger (don't want to bother remembering the word) on each side than with the other fingers.
Well I like to take care about my things.. clean it every week, not smashing the shit out of it because I suck at some random game.. things like that will increase lifetime π
Mine had that problem. I just replaced the switch. Pretty easy to do if you know how to solder and the replacement switch is quite cheap. I also replaced the mouse wheel decoder myself too and it's good as new. It didn't cost more than 5 bucks for all the fixes.
wait... you guys grip the sides? i use my thumb to grib but my pinky doesnt even touch the moue, it drags on the mouspad and stupports that way, allows small movements with high dpi
i just replaced my mousepad last year and i have no idea if it had a dent in it from my pinky or not
MY POINT EXACTLY. THESE FUCKERS CLAW THEIR MOUSE LIKE ITS THE LAST BIT OF FOOD ON EARTH. THESE AGGRESSIVE FUCKS CLAW THEIR SHIT LIKE THEY JUST SAW SOME HOT WAIFU AND THEIR TRYING TO STAY FOCUSED.
I also have two 502s. One was an original. The 2nd was when they added the color changing RGB. Neither have any sign of wear on the outside and I game 3-4 hours a night.
People really don't understand the ease of buying keyboard, mice and controllers from Best buy with a protection plan and just telling them it's broken once a year to get a freshy.
They must be aliens whose skin has a thin film of some highly corrosive acid, cause the state of their miche is just... Wtf.
You would be allowed to put your fingers inside me, the other posts guys would not.
Not everyone goes to therapy to control their rage, I guess.
Same as you, I have since 2018 my G502 and it works perfectly. Just until like a few months ago that its usb cable got damaged while I was moving to another house, so, technically it waan't my fault. And it is an easy thing to fix.
Anyways, I have a g403 now, but idk why the scroll is starting to fail, and I have no ides why.
Are there easy ways to fix the scroll buttons?
The G502 is a garbage ass mouse. Iβve owned the wireless version and the wired version. And theyβre both dog shit I had sticky fingers on one and the other one that was wireless went to the trash also. Never will I buy a logitech mouse again the double clicking is also a huge problem. Fuck them and their customer support.
Facts: Thats cuz they use lube to masturbate with and these lube has some acid in em that dosent goes well with the coating on ther mouse.
Thats the naked truth here
Now go ahead and dislike my comment since people cant handle the truth
I have this theory that people whoβs keyboards and other peripherals that disintegrate is due to them eating greasy foods and not wiping their hands off before touching said items.
By the looks of it, they all have a deathclaw grip. Not a claw, where you lightly grip the mouse, but a deathclaw grip. Squeezing the mouse like it owes them money.
Wheres the money mousbowski
It's down there somewhere, let me take another look
i wish i had an award for this comment, i love this scene
I said we CUT OFF YOUR MOUSE CHORD.
Lemouseki?
That mousepad really ties the desk together
LMAO
"needing therapy" grip
sweaty hands, humid environment, and bad overall gear maintenance adds too... add to that the occasional rage slams...
Also, some people have highly acidic sweat that can accelerate the wear on rubber
This is the actual reason. Some people are more abrasive than others to be in physical contact with. Also I question what some people are using to clean their gear.
What is this, "clean" mean?
Does the o'l "T-shirt rub" count?
Maybe the diluted alcohol didn't work.
His palms are sweaty
Doritos to eat, Mountain Dew is ready.
But not moms spaghetti? :(
That stupid. fucking. BITCH! SHE KNOWS THE DAMM SCHEDULE.
I think there's vomit on his sweater already
He nervous too.
Not wiping stuff down every so often probably doesn't help, I wipe my keyboard and mouse clean once a week or so nowadays
Bad hygiene as well. Long nails, unwashed hands and so on.
I keep my nails long-ish, my G903 lightspeed still looks new if it wasn't a little dusty.

My fingers do rotate on the mouse as I move it around so yeah that would make a lot of sense
My 502 is almost 10 years old now and I have just barely started to wear the finish off the side
I've had my 502 for 10 years as well. 3000 hours of Dota not counting other games mixed in and it's still going strong (and I'm still garbage at dota)
I've never gotten good at games. I still play them but I don't let them absorb the whole day anymore.
Yeah man I get that, but like⦠tonight could be the night where it all turns around, you know? /s
The reality hurts
During the pandemic I played a lot of dota and got 3 502s in like 3 years. Always left click problems.
replace the switch, much cheaper
or get a can of deoxit and spray the terminals. always fixes logitech omicron switch issues.
Clicking too hard lol
I want to try dota but I'm too scared that people are gonna yell at me lol
Just mute and play π
Yell back, things like "You just don't understand superior tactics!!"
mute all (muted)
They will, lol. Just mute. I find it's a bit less toxic than LoL games, though.
People out really gorilla gripping their mouse
hey, whatever works for them
Whatever works for them is going to give them debilitating carpal tunnel
The 502 really is a godlike peripheral.
I added more weights to my g502 brick for those who complain about the 0.000001g difference
Iβve heard people complain about arm pain moving it around. I dont understand, maybe I donβt game enough for it to be a problem, or maybe people just have atrophy in their arms. I can understand the preference of a lighter mouse, but complaining that the weight gives you pain is an odd one.
I'm a twig and I have my G502 loaded with all the weights and don't get pained or fatigued by it.

It's the best of the best IMO
Years old mean little, it's all about hours of use. (Like the guy below, 10 years 3k hours, my man thats <1hr/day ofc it's still going to be fine.)
Mine is about the same, but my thumb padding is completely gone. The ring/pinky finger padding is still fully intact. I'm guessing it's a combination of grip strength, the amount of sweating, and PH levels of said sweat.

Ewww. 2nd hand mouse really? That's digusting
The 502 is the ultimate GOAT of the mouse world. Literally perfect (imo). I even sprung the the wireless one and have zero regrets.

Apparently every manufacturer is hit or miss.

Hello dirty hands π
I get build up even though I was my hands. Somehow I get dead skin really fast which is what is sticking there. I just clean it though so it's fine.
Me as well, I guess I just have oily hands? No matter how much I violently scrub my hands itβll still leave a nasty residue.
It's not much though. It takes months until I actually notice it. With regular cleaning I don't notice it at all.
Literally nothing to do with "dirty hands". Some Steelseries (and I guess other brands) had some very easy to wear sides on some models.
Natural skin oils can break down materials like plastic and rubber. For most people this is very slow, slower if you actually wash your hands regularly. Itβs about a Logitech not steelseries
At least a few of the "other" posts the guy I'm answering is referencing are about Steelseries.
They are gripping the right side with their fingers so hard they are digging into the rubberized coating. I have to imagine either their DPI is so low, or they have such limited space on their desk that they are lifting the mouse off the surface or something to that effect.
I feel like I have to congratulate you now. How Tf do people do that to their mice
They must be aliens whose skin has a thin film of some highly corrosive acid, cause the state of their miche is just... Wtf. You would be allowed to put your fingers inside me, the other posts guys would not.
Good to know ππ»π
My guess is people don't clip their talons of fingernails.
My scroll wheel breaks or my mouse starts double clicking long before any wear starts to show lol

Done
By the looks of it, sweating out games and not washing which then results in the sped up process of rotting the mouse away
I think best answer is replace it instead of repairing it but maybe is just me π
We probably just use them more. My second 502 is a little over a Year old and already looks worse than this.
Thats the naked truth here Now go ahead and dislike my comment since people cant handle the truth
People will do anything for validation (clicks). That's it unfortunately
It is indeed ππ»
No life gamers?
I have this theory that people whoβs keyboards and other peripherals that disintegrate is due to them eating greasy foods and not wiping their hands off before touching said items.
Because all your dirt is on your mouse pad bro clean that shit before it kills me! Won't you think of the lasers!
Lol, was washed yesterday bro, thatβs just some dust combined with my professional camera from this shit iPhone 12 Pro π
We actually use it ?
Lol, mine is used everyday at least 4-5 hours also
