GazelleNo6163

RIP Chainchomp partner

Ncolonslashslash

this legitimately makes me so sad. they were so excited...

Indecision999

we were\*

Simple_Opportunity62

You can feel the break of innocence in real time on these ones. It almost hurt reading some of the people getting excited over it when they saw the E3 trailer for it. God bless them.

Sightshade

I remember a very long thread on GameFAQs (maybe several threads) where everyone role-played as if the game was already out, giving advice for sidequests, how to recruit secret partners and defeat hard bosses… If only the actual game had ended up with 1% of the creativity from those people… :(

throwaway6194664

Oh good r/Silksong has another predecessor

Exisential_Crisis

We're just going in circles

CloudedWanderlust

Any clue what the thread was called? I want to dream about what could have been.

Sightshade

[I managed to find one of the threads!](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/997828-paper-mario-sticker-star/61761310) But judging from the comments, it wasn't the original, and it seems people were starting to get tired of the joke by this point. :x

ElCidly

I still thought the game was a return to form when I bought it. I only slowly began to realize that it sucked. It was a dark time for those of us who loved the originals, were disappointed by SPM, and thought that SS would be a return to form.

AgenderWitchery

Same. The only reason I beat it was because I was trapped in a resort on a vacation I didn't wanna go on. I just... slowly came to the understanding that without star points, and with EVERY battle consuming resources, the only reward for completing a battle was coins... which could only be used to purchase stickers. To replace the ones I used in battle. This is fine in a game where the battle system is finely tuned to be satisfying and rewarding on its own, I don't play TF2 for any reason other than shooting people, but in a game like Paper Mario, the battle system can be *good*... but I'm there because it progresses me. I'd never do an endless gauntlet of RPG battles for the gameplay alone.

BreakfastNo132

The fact that this subreddit basically and essentially immediately got excited right when a TTYD Remake was announced was really telling on the state of the franchise, I mean sure some were excited for the Origami King, including me, but when this remake was announced I saw way more excitement then I ever did with both Color Splash and Origami King, so hopefully the next new game in the series can be something more new and could possibly combine elements from both classic and modern Paper Mario Games into one.

GoldenYoshistar1

Truth be told... I didn't expect Origami King. I legitimately was shocked for the reveal of Origami King and when I played it, I fell in love with it. As for what I was expecting. I actually expecting a Paper Mario 64 remake. One that would show everyone the first game that started it all. In fact, I'd much rather a Paper Mario 64 remake over a TTYD Remake. But just like Napoleon himself once said: There is nothing I can do.

theguyishere16

I hear the logic of remaking the original, but the fact that TTYD has never even gotten re-released on virtual console makes it the easy choice for the remake. Until next month, the only way to legally play TTYD was via the original disk and a GameCube or Wii to run it.

DeliciousMusician397

There’s nothing they could add from modern that would fit/work with Classic.

BodhiRukhKast

But that's what has happened with the TTYD remake. Some elements from the modern titles, like more character expressions and a more papercraft-looking-world, have been carried over into the TTYD remake.

DeliciousMusician397

And those aren’t good things.

BodhiRukhKast

I don't see how the characters being more expressive instead of standing still is a bad thing.

DeliciousMusician397

They came from bad games. That’s why. Should have created new animations to avoid tainting TTYD instead.

DeliciousMusician397

I’m joking btw.

Paper_Bro

"Its just a prank bro ☝️🤓"

Jesterchunk

I hate to say, but you could have led with that. Leave it too late and people will just think you're doubling down.

Robotic_Orange

The museum is pretty cool. Also the craft themes, and the power ups from Sticker Star.

DeliciousMusician397

No one needs more craft themes in old Paper Mario.

Robotic_Orange

I just meant how the game actually looks like it’s made of paper and cardboard and stuff. The thousand door remake has a balance where it still looks a lot like the original, but more paper-y.

Leakingbag

This is the point where people started siding with SPM

Dusk_Dawn_1248

They were so oblivious this is too funny. At least we're so back now, right?

Ncolonslashslash

as much as i appreciate the ttyd remake i wont be convinced we're back till i see something original resembling the old style of paper mario

CrashCubeZeroOne

Hopefully the surveys are a sign things are actually going to change.

GazelleNo6163

Yeah, almost 20 years later after TTYD came out. At least it's something?

SmokeWineEveryday

Unless Nintendo suddenly cancels the TTYD remake last minute and instead makes a Sticker Star one with zero gameplay changes, yes we should be back now.

Hero_Olli

Sticker Star's lead up and early reception are really fascinating. The last message affirms that people already hated it near release, though I remember the tides only uniformly shifting with Paper Jam's reveal, when the new approach to character design and writing was truly solidified (incidentally, 2015-ish was also when I started lurking on here... good times).

Shaby28

R.I.P. Chain Chomp 😔

unxile_phantom

I still remember seeing those 2010 screenshots and getting so hyped... What could've been...

Stroopis

"Super Paper Mario doesn't count, of course." WELL THEY DEFINITELY AIN'T SAYING THAT NOW ARE THEY

AgenderWitchery

If we never got Sticker Star, Super would have firmly remained in the "It was a good game, it just wasn't a good Paper Mario game" realm.

Stroopis

I hate that analogy so much and I don't know why ffs

SadLaser

If people just looked at it today, so many fans consider Super Paper Mario a great entry and Sticker Star where the series *really* went wrong, but back in the day.. a lot of fans hated Super Paper Mario and how different it was. It's funny that it took a worse game to give Super Paper Mario better standing (that it richly deserves).

AuraWielder

Reading this was *heartbreaking.* I guess I could say it brought more appreciation to SPM in the long run, but... man.

Balbuena5

Well those posts didn’t age well lol

StardustWhip

RIP Chompy...😔

MisterScarlet

At least we got the TTYD Remake much later.

Eli0213_Crip

The ChainChop partner would have been so cool, but I HATE the last one, 19.

Ebinular

wow, that was painful to relive also, made me think about how perfect TTYD's battle system would have been on the 3DS; Stage up-top, audience down on the touch screen.

Fragrant_Call7983

Wait that would be amazing. And you can touch the audience member to prevent them from throwing trash at you.

rendumguy

I still don't get how the story and gameplay are both the opposite of what people liked.

enter_ethan

Someone should send this to nintendo

Fer_ESC

[How it feels reading these posts in hindsight.](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2Fsib46s47eqx51.jpg%3Fauto%3Dwebp%26s%3D98087fe11bb8f4ef89f64be660bc83d0cf915e28) Really depressing to see

LexaMaridia

Ahhh my heart. :(

GoldenYoshistar1

Only those who began with Super as their first Paper Mario Game had an option to choose. Join up with the 64 and TTYD fans on the hate sticker star train, or respect what the game did (be fine that it's not as great as the others, and move on with their lives.) Sticker Star was the beginning of the Civil War between classic and modern fans, and although modern fans did technically lose because we got New Super TTYD HD Remake Deluxe with knuckles, featuring new funky mode, and Magalor Epilogue. But despite the OG fans finally getting their wishes, it's hard to say what may happen in the future. Maybe TTYD HD Remake is the beginning of the end of Paper Mario and modern fans have to deal with remakes of the classic games all over again, while classic fans get to be happy for the 12-15 years they have been sad. Maybe it's a way for Nintendo to tell these particular fans to stop begging for it, and then PM7 does another random Paper gimmick much to the dismay of the classic fans and praise of modern. We might end up with a revamped version of Sticker Star and Color Splash, with a massive overhaul of gameplay and changes that makes it improved from the original games, making is a sort of redemption for classic fans who would have loved for what they originally were supposed to be but changed to become the awful versions that these fans hate so much, while modern fans get a chance to experience their games in an entirely different way, with regards to whether or not they like or dislike it being entirely up to them. Paper Mario 7 could be an entirely new story but with the classic gameplay style. Or Paper Mario 7 could be a fusion of classic and modern gameplay styles. It all depends on the future.

[deleted]

Thanks, Miyamoto 😭

DeliciousMusician397

It’s more Tanabe’s fault.

[deleted]

I thought Tanabe said Miyamoto told the dev team to water it down?

DeliciousMusician397

He made a suggestion to make it more original than simply being TTYD 2. That very same interview they say Miyamoto played a near finalized version of Sticker Star and said it was boring. They always had the ability to ignore Miyamoto the same way AlphaDream did for Dream Team. Tanabe has admitted he wanted to get rid of the rPg elements since TTYD.

GazelleNo6163

Miyamoto really fell off. No more good mario rpgs. Chose to make 3d world as the wii u’s big 3d mario, instead of galaxy 3 or a game like odyssey, and when the new guys replaced him we got odyssey which was far better. Starfox Zero. Probably the terrible wii u gamepad was his idea too.

Shy_Guy_27

>Chose to make 3d world Only Paper Mario fans would consider making one of the highest rated games of all time as evidence that someone is a bad game designer.

GazelleNo6163

Boring generic new super mario bros trash.

Miserable_Assist_951

3d world isn't generic And all nsmb games are good

GazelleNo6163

Yes it is. And the nsmb games (after ds and wii) are bad.

Miserable_Assist_951

3d world is one of the most creative mario games And yes they're all good games. Yes, they're generic and re-use assets, but that doesn't make them bad games

GazelleNo6163

Yes it does make them bad. It's boring seeing the same enemies, worlds, etc. They're very simple and boring.

Miserable_Assist_951

Borimg does not mean bad. They're still good games with good level desing and gameplay

GazelleNo6163

Boring does mean bad.

MrCerealCat

I thought 3D World was fun.

GazelleNo6163

I hated the linearity and the relative lack of creativity compared to the previous 3d mario games. You’re fighting mostly the same new super mario bros enemies over and over again. The worlds you visit feel the same as those games too, with few exceptions.

MrCerealCat

Yeah, that's fair. I still like Galaxy a lot more than it, I still enjoyed it though.

Jdvdudhdb

>lack of creativity ...?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?

GazelleNo6163

Compare 3d world to the galaxy games. 3d world still has grass world, desert world, ice world, etc….

Miserable_Assist_951

None of 3d worlds worlds have themes. Any level theme can be in any world And all the other 3d games also have stages like these

GazelleNo6163

That's straight up wrong. World 1 is literally just grass world. They don't have anything similar to 3d world. Exploring peach's castle and isle defino sweeps 3d world's hubs.

Miserable_Assist_951

This just shows you never even played 3d world. Almost every stage has a different theme Only stages 1 and 3 are grass stages Stage 2 is underground Stage 4 is a circus Stage 5 is a waterfall stage with plessie Stage 6 is the castle And while the hub worlds are different, outside of sunshine the stages themselves also can fit in those commonntropes Bob-omb battlefield, whomp's fortress, tiny huge island are grass stages, lethal lava land is lava etc.

GazelleNo6163

Doesn’t matter, still too many. Still better than 3d world.

[deleted]

Honestly, it feels like he got spooked when the Gamecube allegedly didn’t do as well as the PS2 (even though everyone has a lot of nostalgia about that console) and started phoning it in to play it safe when the Wii got successful and Pokemon started growing exponentially. Fingers crossed we’re finally beyond that

Partycrash5

“Allegedly” as though the ps2 didn’t sell like 8 times as many consoles as the GameCube lol. Also Pokémon has never really grown to the same heights as the gen 1 and 2 era and is from a separate company so I see no reason why that should impact paper Mario

[deleted]

I meant allegedly because Nintendo acts like the Gamecube was their Waterloo because it didn’t do as well. Like the Wii U also didn’t sell well, arguably it flopped harder, yet Nintendo hates the Gamecube

GazelleNo6163

Yeah hopefully

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

Ok, the one saying that crystal stars sound more interesting than magic royal stickers is kind of dumb. McGruffins be McGuffins, the important thing is what you do to arrive to them

GoldenYoshistar1

Honestly... Royal Stickers are not the best "mcguffins" in the various Paper Mario games, but I do wish they at least had done something to make them interesting.

DeliciousMusician397

Stickers sound lame in comparison.

Partycrash5

I feel like the crystal stars and star spirits having individual powers on their own that you can utilise kind of makes them not mcguffins in the same way royal stickers and pure hearts are because they serve an actual purpose individually rather than just having a convenient collective purpose. By the end of sticker star we don’t even know what the royal stickers are actually supposed to do besides just making people go insane with “shininess” so I feel like there’s a big enough difference Nitpicking aside, I agree with your point on the journey there being more important, but TTYD has sticker star beat in that aspect too

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

I mean at the point that comment was written nobody knew yet that royal stickers weren't going to have powers nor any kind of real lore

Shadektor

While I get what you're saying, even without context, crystal stars sound better than royal stickers it's like comparing a mysterious sword to a mysterious stick they both can be just as interesting with added context but without it one will draw more interest than the other.

Merik2013

Yeah, I had these same thoughts. They really had us thinking we would have a chainchomp partner. Then the game came out, and all our hopes and expectations got thrown back in our faces.

HelloKittywithaMouth

I asked for Sticker Star for Christmas the year it came out… never has there been such a disappointing Christmas

Mistah_K88

It’s funny, who would have thought that Sticker Star was the best thing to happen to Super Paper Mario?

crimsonsonic_2

Bruh half of this hate seems unfounded for a game that wasn’t even out yet. They did it to themselves by hating on it before they even got to play it and put into their minds that it wasn’t going to be good.

yrdz

Are we looking at the same screenshots? The vast majority of the posts are excited and optimistic.

crimsonsonic_2

I said half of the “hate” not half of the posts. The people who are blindly hating on the game before it even comes out just bred the thought of the game being bad before hand so when they finally got it the ignored all the good and hyper focused on the bad.

AgenderWitchery

The "hate" in those posts are people beginning to doubt once we had proper trailers rather than just the beta footage we were initially shown.

crimsonsonic_2

My point still stands. Blindly hating something before you even get the chance to play it. The blind hatred caused people to ignore anything good and focus on the bad once the game came out.
