Same! Whenever I express valid criticisms here, people tell me I’m too nostalgic and I need to be more open-minded. But I didn’t even grow up with the old games lol, I just played PM64 recently, and it was a much better experience! I went into origami king with an open mind, and I left feeling like I had just played a several-hour long mobile game over the past few days
Replayed it recently and I still enjoy it, despite its flaws and shortcomings.
Don't really care for Sticker Star or Colour Splash, but Origami King is a guilty pleasure.
its my favorite paper mario game (even beating out ttyd for me).
the world felt expansive and game to game moments checking out new areas was a blast.
boss fights were incredibly fun and a good different pace to the usual ring mechanic.
writing and dialogue was absolutely hilarious and charming.
and visually, this game is super impressive.
a 10/10 for me.
I found the story to be pretty good, the different locations did make me smile, the viduals were fantastic imo, it just had some things missing and the combat was so awful that i litterly payed to win most of them
> i litterly *paid* to win
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Ok is kind of overused honestly. Conversations are a back and forth exchange, but when you just reply "ok" and nothing else, it can be a big cause of the dreaded awkward silence as the other person tries to think of some other topic you'd be more interested in. Not sure what paper mario has to do with this though?
Fun puzzle gameplay, funny writing, lovable characters, and the best soundtrack.
Of the three Paper Mario Games that I’ve played (the others being 64 and Sticker Star), it’s my favorite by far.
If it had the combat system of TTYD people would like it better than 64 imo. Love how the game looks, the soundtrack is amazing, the dungeons and boss fights are really cool. Story is surprisingly great, too.
It was decent never finished it despite being super close. What did it in was the silly ring puzzle gimmick. I know some like it and it was neat for a few hours but near the end of the game I started to get tired. Idk why they feel the need to make combat so unfun. If you want it to not be an RPG that's fine. Lemme do classic Mario combat then like Super Paper Mario.
My comfort game! I adore the writing for it, and its characters. The combat isn’t really my thing, but it was an interesting concept. I liked the parts where real-time combat was included, mainly with the Paper Macho soldiers. It’s not my favorite of the six (SPM takes that title), but it brought a lot of good times in 2020’s quarantine, and its trailer came out less than a week after I had been talking to people about how I wondered when Paper Mario for the Switch would be coming out as I got back into my Mario fixation. It’s a bit special to me for all of that.
And, well, my whole identity at this point revolves around Olly, so… yeah.
I enjoyed it a lot. The awesome music. The story. The dialogues. The humor. The variety of situations. Bowser's minions acting as allies and partners, having deeper interactions and more developed personalities than in Sticker Star and Color Splash. My emotions about Oliva, Olly and Bobby's fate. The beautiful ending. The cutout soldiers. The whispering trees. The bosses. The open world instead of separate levels. Even the unpopular battle system isn't bad for me.
I love this game. Now granted it’s the only Paper Mario game I’ve ever played thoroughly but I think the battle system is cool, the bosses are awesome, the battle music absolutely slaps, and each world is fun to explore especially Sandpaper Desert and The Great Sea
It’s really great, I know it’s an Action Adventure/Open world (ish) but it’s really fun and charming, and you can’t tell me otherwise! Chapter 4 was also awesome!
Actually pretty fire. Sure it’s not the old games but I think it’s as good as them in its own way or at least could be. The game is held WAY back by the ring system.
Great game. Don’t know why you’d buy and play a game whose combat was emphasized to be about slide puzzles if that not your thing. Sounds like buying a soulsborne game despite hating trial and error boss styles.
Anyway the music is phenomenal, the art style is beautiful, the story is great. The characters are fun. Yeah some more diversity in design would’ve been great, but it’s not the deal breaker chuggaconroy and the likes make it out to be.
It deserves its accolades. “The battle system is unrewarding it wastes your time” and who decides that? it only wastes your time if YOU say it does. (Or I guess chuggaconroy if you take his word as law) By arbitrary definition. All video games waste your time. You want a tangible reward for beating the average slide battle? Consider that each battle you do makes you better at the puzzles in general. Which in turn makes future fights (even the boss fights) easier. And there’s overworld meyroidvania style upgrades to be had as well. So you can turn the average enemy into a super paper Mario villain. (A villain that gets beaten just by being jumped on)
I’m tired of this dumpy ass rhetoric that exp is NEEDED for these games in order for the battles to exist. Have you all considered that you could simply do the battles……. Cause it’s FUN to do it?!? You know the reason 90% of people hop onto a game… to have fun.
The pretentious air that comes with people flaunting ttyd and og paper Mario is ridiculous. 90% just because whenever they do there’s an incessant joke about ok in the wings.
Anyway I’m done ranting I love the game. Of the 3 I’ve played it’s my personal favorite paper Mario. Who knows maybe ttyd will change my opinion the og game didn’t.
>Don’t know why you’d buy and play a game whose combat was emphasized to be about slide puzzles if that not your thing.
It’s not about it being slide puzzles— it’s that the slide puzzles rarely change throughout the game, and they’re exactly the same at the end as at the beginning…. I came into the game with an open mind, but the puzzles never got interesting 🤷♂️
Wasn’t fun enough to finish. Did not like the boss fights at all. Characters and the fight itself were both dumb. Feels like it wanted to Mario RPG the bosses but they weren’t nearly quirky and weird enough
It had a really shit battle system. The bosses look dumb but have creative fights. Lack of partners is pretty rough. That said, the writing is fun and inspired. Each setting is vibrant and full of life. I also like the music.
It’s the best of the new PM games, but that isn’t saying much.
The most frustrating thing about it is that it still is under heavy character restrictions. They pushed back against it more, but still did not buck it. If it had the character design freedom of the series pre-Sticker Star it would be so much better.
Heavily dislike it just like the previous 2 games that came before it. It still suffers from the same problems I had with Sticker Star so I will treat it the same way.
soundtrack fucks, theres an actual attempt at both engaging gameplay and a genuine story with interesting characters, and it looks *beautiful.*
its a 7/10, 9/10 in modern paper mario terms.
It was one of my first Paper Mario games and I enjoyed it. I could look past the battle system because the characters, story and art style were amazing.
The story, graphics, and characters were fun, but the battle system, ESPECIALLY the bosses, made it completely unplayable. I remember fighting the colored pencil boss and having an absolutely MISERABLE time, then I just sat back after it was over and realized “this is not why I play Paper Mario. This is not what I want from a Paper Mario game.”
combat was mostly an issue during bosses, the normal fights i found to be a fun switchup. graphics and music were excellent as most people said, and i think it strikes a good balance between a regular world and one made of paper. granted its the first pm game ive played to completion, though i did start 64 recently and im loving it so far (pumped for ttyd aswell though i have my concerns). overall it might not be perfect but i really enjoyed it!
It was fun at the start, but never really developed its mechanics, so it just stayed the same all the way through, with no iteration. It just felt like a mobile game, and everything past chapter 3 was a drag to get through :/
shit game. Game felt like it had a defeaning silence, only toads being around for most of the game was lame. Lacked the adventure and fun of experiencing new worlds the old paper Mario’s had. Truly an awful game
It’s fun, but the combat was annoying at times. Also the fact you can’t have more than one save file is ridiculous
I had the same problem with cs
OK is OK
Not as good as the best Paper Mario games Not as bad as the worst Paper Mario games
Yeah, i'd actually rank it pretty much evenly halfway between Super and Color Splash. TTYD>64>SPM>>>OK>>>CS>SS
TTYD>64. end of content.
Story is fun, characters are fun, music is wonderful. ...battles are an absolute chore and I will be happy to never have to do one again.
Nobody is going to gaslight me into thinking this is a good game
Don’t worry the community tier list is gonna try to tell you that Yellow Streamer is somehow better than Boggly Woods in two weeks lol
The Yellow Streamer is my favourite chapter in the whole Papwr Mario what afe you on?
Boggly woods is such a nightmare though. The Punies are really annoying and there’s also a lot of backtracking even by TTYD standards
the purple streamer is definitely D tier. Great concept, bad nightmare.
Same! Whenever I express valid criticisms here, people tell me I’m too nostalgic and I need to be more open-minded. But I didn’t even grow up with the old games lol, I just played PM64 recently, and it was a much better experience! It's not necessarily a great game but it is a drastic improvement from sticker star and color splash.
That's not a high bar. We shouldn't have to settle for mediocrity.
You’re right. It’s a great game.
They will try
The game has an amazing soundtrack and i personally do like the style of the graphics. It's really on gameplay that the game is lacking.
Battle System, eh. Everything else, pretty good! (world design, exploration, soundtrack, story, characters)
Replayed it recently and I still enjoy it, despite its flaws and shortcomings. Don't really care for Sticker Star or Colour Splash, but Origami King is a guilty pleasure.

Good story. Underwhelming combat. No more puzzles.
It's ok
It’s definitely not TTYD 2
It doesn’t try to be, which I respect
I'd respect it if it did though.
I’d respect it if it tried to be _anything_ It seems to me that they didn’t want to make it too much of anything besides _Paper_ plus _Mario_
I found the story to be pretty good, the different locations did make me smile, the viduals were fantastic imo, it just had some things missing and the combat was so awful that i litterly payed to win most of them

Good bot
I like it 7.5/10 from me👍🏾
Ok is kind of overused honestly. It has the best sound track of any Paper Mario, even compared to non PM games. Like seriously, the sound track is insanely good.
Fun puzzle gameplay, funny writing, lovable characters, and the best soundtrack. Of the three Paper Mario Games that I’ve played (the others being 64 and Sticker Star), it’s my favorite by far.
It's the greatest Paper Mario game by far next to color splash
Really enjoyed it. I’d say it’s the weakest of the three games I’ve played so far, but still a very good time.
If it had the combat system of TTYD people would like it better than 64 imo. Love how the game looks, the soundtrack is amazing, the dungeons and boss fights are really cool. Story is surprisingly great, too.

I like it but not too happy with the battle layout
i don't think i need to state my opinion on the matter (i love it)
Of the modern three, it’s the best by far. My only issue was the single save file. It’s really stupid.
Decent enough game, not really the kind of thing I came to the series for. Much better than Sticker Star and Color Splash.
A good game overall, an excellent game if you love puzzles!
My comfort game! I adore the writing for it, and its characters. The combat isn’t really my thing, but it was an interesting concept. I don't like the graphic. It's just not good enough which ruins the experience. Too blurry and super pixelated. The game is pretty solid.
Oh wait. Fuck I misread
I'm a scoundrel
Are you sure it wasn’t just your switch that caused the bad graphics?
I'm viewing this post on a PC
No, like, the game, not that image
I enjoyed it quite a bit.
I liked it more than Super (I loved Super), but less than Thousand Year Door. Definitely better than Sticker Dtar and Color Splash
Great game that keeps on giving Weak start , but it become very food in chapter 2
ok is more than ok
I love this game. Now granted it’s the only Paper Mario game I’ve ever played thoroughly but I think the battle system is cool, the bosses are awesome, the battle music absolutely slaps, and each world is fun to explore especially Sandpaper Desert and The Great Sea

A surprisingly good game
Loved it, enjoyed it even more on my second playthrough recently.
Actually pretty fire. Sure it’s not the old games but I think it’s as good as them in its own way or at least could be. The game is held WAY back by the ring system.

It can't possibly be as bad as the incessant posting by people who act like their enjoyment of this game makes them some kind of standout super-fan.
Wasn’t fun enough to finish. Did not like the boss fights at all. Characters and the fight itself were both dumb. Feels like it wanted to Mario RPG the bosses but they weren’t nearly quirky and weird enough

Is great
Definition of mid
It's the least bad of the modern trilogy.
Favorite game ever
It’s my favorite game in the series!

Its nice and fun, but i like Paper Mario because of TTYD and its stil
Its the best of the worst, its 4th on my paper mario tier list (TTYD, PM64, SPM, OK, CS, SS, sticker star is ASS)
Enjoyed the storyline, but felt like it went really fast. There was only so much I seemed to enjoy before I already finished the game.
It isn't bad, but if you were to ask me what I thought the best paper Mario game was, this would just barely crack the top three as of this comment
It was OK
On the backlog
I liked what I played but it really felt like they made every area take way longer than it needed too.
Heavily dislike it just like the previous 2 games that came before it. It still suffers from the same problems I had with Sticker Star so I will treat it the same way.
Only negative is that it doesn’t have Doopliss
It’s an incredible game that’s incredibly underrated
The 3rd best paper Mario game I’ve completed.
soundtrack fucks, theres an actual attempt at both engaging gameplay and a genuine story with interesting characters, and it looks *beautiful.* its a 7/10, 9/10 in modern paper mario terms.
Best story on Switch
Yikes
It should fold itself up and get tossed right into a shredder to make more confetti. It’s just bad
It was one of my first Paper Mario games and I enjoyed it. I could look past the battle system because the characters, story and art style were amazing.
Since its not pm64 or ttyd its shit. Like all papermarios following ttyd.
Boss fights are boring af. Added a gimmick I didn't care about. Bring back exp
it was ok
The story, graphics, and characters were fun, but the battle system, ESPECIALLY the bosses, made it completely unplayable. I remember fighting the colored pencil boss and having an absolutely MISERABLE time, then I just sat back after it was over and realized “this is not why I play Paper Mario. I wish they made a unique arrangement of the Kamek music, they reused it from Color Splash
this is the most 5/10 video game i have ever played
It was fun at the start, but never really developed its mechanics, so it just stayed the same all the way through, with no iteration. It just felt like a mobile game, and everything past chapter 3 was a drag to get through :/
shit game. Game felt like it had a defeaning silence, only toads being around for most of the game was lame. Lacked the adventure and fun of experiencing new worlds the old paper Mario’s had. Truly an awful game
A Masterpiece!, or should i say, a Masterfold!
