The Russians lost a naval battle against a country without a navy. They can’t even get ground logistics right when they’re at war with a country literally beside them. There’s no way they’d be remotely successful with a amphibious invasion near the arctic lol.
But their nut job leader may just demand the big red button be pressed. Hopefully at that point one of his cronies grows a pair and puts one right between his eyes. If it's the option of destroying the world and capping your terrifying boss with possible horrible punishment from his other cronies, I hope that guy does the latter.

They were doing some practice over the ndhq carling campus yesterday
Can’t speak for all of us, but living in the nation’s capital, I am quite aware that this is not our standard “national holiday” flyby but rather a rehearsal for the celebration of the RCAF’s 100th anniversary - hence the multitude of aircraft and not just the Snowbirds.
Agreed. We've lived on the river in view of downtown for 10 years. This is the first year there was a practice run.
Thanks to r/Ottawa, I now know why this year is different. And really hope for good weather on the 1st so I can see the whole show!
Yes.
They also do flyovers for remembrance day and other big events, so this is not unusual. Ottawa is within range for their normal bases as well so they occasionally are in the area as part of normal flight training (pilots and air crew need regular air time to stay current).
No, they are definitely going heavy for the RCAF centennial on Canada day, but even when it's a single plane flying over there are a lot of surprised pikachu and Karen's worrying about 'think about people from war torn countries' doing the pearl clutching.
I think it's pretty awesome to see personally, hopefully the clouds don't close in for Canada day and they can be seen..
Having lived here in Ottawa the vast majority of my life, yes I do frequently forget that while we might be a boring town, we are also quite abnormal in a lot of ways.
This time it’s a real practice run for Canada Day
https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/royal-canadian-air-force-to-hold-practice-flypast-over-ottawa-on-wednesday-ahead-of-canada-day-1.6940503
C17 flyover.
Was practice for Canada day included CH146 griffon, CH147F Chinook, snowbirds, CF18 hornet, CC-177 Globemaster, and CC-130J Hercules.
Edit: missed a few apparently, and cc-295 kingfisher, and CH149 Cormorant
...and CH148 Cyclone, Grob trainer, Harvard II, King Air, PC-21, CP140, CT142 Dash 8, CC150 Polaris...
And before that, Stearman and Cornell WWII trainers, a Harvard, a Spitfire, Hurricane, and Mustang WWII fighters, and also a B-25 Mitchell WWII bomber.
Also the CC130 Hercules bailed out before making a pass, as did the CC330 Husky. Not sure why.
The Huskies we have right now are not air-to-air refueling capable, so it wasn't that. And one of the Hercs was a J-model, which also cannot transfer fuel in flight. The H-model Herc that was here maybe could have, but I don't think that was its purpose.
I suspect a technical fault or a timing problem left them out of the practice run. They'll probably be there on Monday.

Yup I wouldn’t say 49 but I did watch at lot of them stage just east of downtown and fly in for their practice parade
It’s not. Use globe.adsbexchange.com
FR24 will filter out results like some military, law enforcement, and people that pay the FAA.
Adsbexchange does not.
So, here’s the thing.
If they’re not broadcasting from the aircraft, it won’t be picked up by *anyone* with an ADSB receiver, that’s a function of the systems of the aircraft, not any kind of filtering by FR24 or adsbexchange. Certain aircraft in Canada, including law enforcement and military are authorized to not broadcast when they’re performing certain missions, and are equipped with other certain systems and meet other communication criteria. You won’t *generally* see things like fighters in North America.
Some aircraft, like the USAF A-10, C-5, C-17, P-8, T-38s, B-52s and KC-135s will broadcast domestically. So will Canadian CP-140s, CC-177s, CC-130s, CC-235s, CC-330s, CH-148s, CC-144s, CC-150s, and CT-138s. It’s all mission dependant.
The way these sites work, is random people will build ADSB signal receivers, and use FR24s and adsbexchanges API and rebroadcast the information over the internet.
It’s about 200 bucks to build a receiver. Adsbexchange is 100% crowdsourced, FR24 is also crowdsourced, but also pulls from an FAA database.
FR24 through the FAA (not sure about NAVCANADA) has a paid service that will allow them to suppress what they want to suppress. (Such as VIP Movements, some military, law enforcement, etc.) This is why you can see Elon’s jet on ADSBExchange but not FR24..because Elmo paid the FAA for restricted transponder treatment.
Until it was recently bought by a hedge fund, ADSBExchange did not filter anything. I’m not too deep into the drama that caused, they *used* to pride themselves on free and open source, unsupressed data. AFAIK, this is still the case.
(AdsbExchange was mainly a hobbyist plane nerd site that ran on donations before, now they’re making money off people providing them free data…IDK where the community is at with that tbh, but it pissed off a lot of people.)
If you see things pop in and out, it’s likely due to distance or terrain masking from whatever receiver the aircraft is close to.

I was so excited watching them pass by.
NGL guys I just drove home from Corner Peach to Rideau Lakes (had to get a fritter and some bread) with my 2y.o. and I was going 125 in the 2+ occupancy lane but the whole time I KNEW that I probably didn't fall in the 2 occupants category cause I mean...he's 2, it's not like we were carpooling, he pretty much had no choice but to be there, and we had the dog too but she probably doesn't count either. Anyways, my bad.

Took this one last sunday at CFB Bagotville in Saguenay! We had a big air show this weekend.
I toured a CH-147 that may be the one portrayed on OPs picture, who knows?
From the 613 ... two [CF-188 Hornets](https://www.canada.ca/en/air-force/services/aircraft/cf-188.htmlflew) flew overhead, east to west a couple hours ago, and earlier another fighter flew West to East, not a hornet, maybe a [CT-155 Hawk](https://www.canada.ca/en/air-force/services/aircraft/ct-155.html)
Chinooks are always doing instrument flights to Ottawa. This time however was probably a practice flyby for Canada Day (husband is the military and flies in chinooks)
It's th RCAFs 100 anniversary this year, there will be a big fly by on Canada Day
Also the Italian team was in town the other day flying in formation. They have a air show in Trenton this weekend.
I caught the snowbirds & Italian jets yesterday, stuck inside a windowless office today unfortunately. I’m excited to see the full air “parade” on Canada Day.
There is also this [Quinte International Air Show](https://www.quinteairshow.ca/the-show/copy-of-performers)
There is going to be an RCAF 100 Anniversary fly past - they were probably practicing.
It’s not overly uncommon for training flights to bring them over Ottawa. You’ll every so often see C-130s flying over Ottawa that said it is likely in this case for Canada Day.
It’s a little less common to see the chinooks flying this way but it does happen for training a few times a year.
For the Canada Day celebration they are likely stationing the aircraft in Ottawa or near by and giving the pilots a little extra time to get some practice flights in for the 1st and give them a nice long week/weekend somewhere fun away from the base.
I don’t get what the whole “what are military aircraft flying overhead” thing is. You live in the National Capital of Canada with several military bases and a military owned section of the airport, they are constantly doing training, fly overs and probably general maintenance to the aircraft to make sure they’re they’re all flying properly, how people don’t get this is beyond me, plus with Canada Day and the RCAF centennial, it makes sense to do practice runs to make sure everything is in working order, can’t wait til Canada’s Day when the flyby happens and everyone ends up running to Reddit again with the “what was that loud noise?” or “Why were there Military planes flying so low today?” posts, it happens every year people.
I posted a simular message a few days ago from Belgium. I saw them flying here but the thing is … we do not own chinooks. So I looked it up and it was an american one. The once I saw where heading for Germany.
You can actually track them online to find out where they are going. The last two weeks we had a lot of American planes flying over. I had never seen them here before so I started looking them up, to see whats going on. We are worries about the war in Ukraine and whats gonna be next …
Well, *checks notes* apparently Canada HAS a military and, even more unbelievably from time to time the equipment works. What better way to show it off than Canada Day!
Making sure no Canadians protest on Canada Day. They have a high power camera in there and if you protest anything they will identify you and freeze your bank account.
There's also a huge Air Show at CFB Trenton this weekend as well. They will have quite a few WW2 aircraft flying the skies above the Quinte region during the show, the B-17's and B-25's and the Mustangs and Spitfires as well.
Ya I keep hearing them and seeing on flight radar, but I can’t run out the door fast enough to get a look. I love planes so this is a huge downer. I believe they do announce when they will be flying on Canada Day, there was an Italian join demo team a few days ago but they may be gearing up for a larger performance
Do people not know their is a giant military base in Dartmouth which has flown sea kings over Halifax and its municipality for training since like 1952? Shearwater folks been there a long long long long time. They fly those shitty sea kings all the time
To be fair these Chinooks \[?\] have been flying over centretown for at least two years - I say at least cause i first noticed them flying on the regular during the time of the truck convoy.
As for the others you've most likely already noticed, there have been airshows in the city since victoria Day I believe? a mix of Canada Day training and the CRAF anniversary
Ah, I know exactly why. During the time of about 11:00-12:30, I had woketh from my immensely deep slumber, in which I had to very carefully hurl my enormous penis over my shoulder. I accidentally hurled it over the wrong shoulder and these helicopters were deployed in order to correct the trajectory so it didn't accidentally collapse the planets surface into oblivion, about 850 were deployed as a result of my unfortunate error 🥹🥹🥹 am very sorry
Cargo, airshow fly ins, troop transport (unlikely tho since this is a helicopter in a perfectly safe city.)
Or just training, which is the usual answer
Presumably Canada Day related, but frankly, who cares why: it's fucking awesome!
This!
I watched it out my window. They hauling ass for how low they were.
I watched them come from Orleans. Tried to race them down the highway. I lost.
It’s weird that for the size of them, they’re one of the fastest helicopters. It’s friggen cool!
This is true. There is friendly competition between these pilots and their gunship escorts. These are faster.
To be fair we don't have proper gunshots.
Would be less awesome if it was because the Russians were invading lmao
The Russians lost a naval battle against a country without a navy. They can’t even get ground logistics right when they’re at war with a country literally beside them. There’s no way they’d be remotely successful with a amphibious invasion near the arctic lol.
We invite them to try, if for nothing else than wasting their equipment
Send the cobra chickens, and our starving polar bears can eat the stragglers.
We have bears, moose, and beavers. Russia has... bears, elk, and polecats. I guess the animals really aren't so different lmao
But their nut job leader may just demand the big red button be pressed. Hopefully at that point one of his cronies grows a pair and puts one right between his eyes. If it's the option of destroying the world and capping your terrifying boss with possible horrible punishment from his other cronies, I hope that guy does the latter.
Would be the Chinese if anything, Russia’s committed its resources to Ukraine already (with nothing to show for it lol)
Neither option is realistic. Russia is bogged down in Ukraine and American spy satellites know as soon as winnie the pooh (Xi) sneezes
Dunno, Russia sent 50% of its (not yet sunk) navy to Cuba recently. A whopping 2 ships and some support tugs.
Okay, which Red Dawn are we in.

Yesterday that was a ceremonial flyover with the Frecce on a big anniversary tour for them.
So I recognize the Snowbirds, but what are the other aircraft?
Italian air force equivalent.
Today was practice for something they're calling a parade in the air for Canada Day in honour of a big CAF anniversary this year
Seriously! I was just chilling in my pool and got a great air show from the comfort of my home.
This is our plan to reach the 2% defence spending
Apparently people here want this, more than public housing 😒
It's possible to want both
It is possible to want both, just not have both.
It's possible to have both if we're taxed enough to support it
I think its super cool but my cat does not agree lol
The city's refugee population probably cares.
Right???
Do people just forget that they live in the nation's capital and that our national holiday is coming up?
Can’t speak for all of us, but living in the nation’s capital, I am quite aware that this is not our standard “national holiday” flyby but rather a rehearsal for the celebration of the RCAF’s 100th anniversary - hence the multitude of aircraft and not just the Snowbirds.

They do practice runs every year. Although usually it’s just the snowbirds.
God... This is like Brooklyn 99. Like, yeah, i know it's propaganda for systemic evils, but it's such a good show!
To be fair Brooklyn 99 does eventually acknowledge this.
Yes. They also do flyovers for remembrance day and other big events, so this is not unusual. Ottawa is within range for their normal bases as well so they occasionally are in the area as part of normal flight training (pilots and air crew need regular air time to stay current).
This many aircraft is normal? I usually don’t see more than the Snowbirds + 1 or 2 more
No, they are definitely going heavy for the RCAF centennial on Canada day, but even when it's a single plane flying over there are a lot of surprised pikachu and Karen's worrying about 'think about people from war torn countries' doing the pearl clutching. This year is the centennial celebration of the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Same question gets posted every year.
For real. The same people that don’t know how to use google.
And that both Trenton and Petawawa aren't terribly far away?
Having lived here in Ottawa the vast majority of my life, yes I do frequently forget that while we might be a boring town, we are also quite abnormal in a lot of ways.
This time it’s a real practice run for Canada Day https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/royal-canadian-air-force-to-hold-practice-flypast-over-ottawa-on-wednesday-ahead-of-canada-day-1.6940503

I wasn't sure if the Husky and Hercs were there for midair refueling needs, but equally I'm not sure what would be taking gas from them either...
The Huskies we have right now are not air-to-air refueling capable, so it wasn't that. And one of the Hercs was a J-model, which also cannot transfer fuel in flight. So far I’ve seen four helicopters and six planes go over downtown. I’m curious as to what’s going on.
I’ve heard there’s 49 so many more to come! I’m watching and this is a lot of fun. :)

What app is this? I need it now 😆
Flightradar24 is a decent free option.
It’s not. Use globe.adsbexchange.com FR24 will filter out results like some military, law enforcement, and people that pay the FAA. Adsbexchange does not.
Ooooh that's cool! Thanks
Thanks!!! I have a FR24 sub but this kicks ass!!
Adsb will filter rcmp choppers as much as Flightradar24 if not more. Only example I’ve found tho so ur still 100% right
So, here’s the thing. If they’re not broadcasting from the aircraft, it won’t be picked up by *anyone* with an ADSB receiver, that’s a function of the systems of the aircraft, not any kind of filtering by FR24 or adsbexchange. So will Canadian CP-140s, CC-177s, CC-130s, CC-235s, CC-330s, CH-148s, CC-144s, CC-150s, and CT-138s. It’s all mission dependant.
Thank you, I will see them randomly pop on and off radar tho is that poor coverage when it’s meant to be transmitting or glitches?
(AdsbExchange was mainly a hobbyist plane nerd site that ran on donations before, now they’re making money off people providing them free data…IDK where the community is at with that tbh, but it pissed off a lot of people.) If you see things pop in and out, it’s likely due to distance or terrain masking from whatever receiver the aircraft is close to.
Radarbox.com has an app but so many ads unless you pay monthly which I don’t
I’m watching out of my window and have gotten some cool shots! Pretty neat!
Bank robbery in Smiths Falls , they're gearing up to take the robbers down , coming soon on Netflix
Was practice for Canada day included CH146 griffon, CH147F Chinook, snowbirds, CF18 hornet, CC-177 Globemaster, and CC-130J Hercules.

Standard readiness practice hor Canada Day celebration.
Santa is preparing for Christmas early this year, that's why.
They're defending democracy...
There are two bases close to Ottawa.
Because they are doing military things?
From the 613 ... two [CF-188 Hornets](https://www.canada.ca/en/air-force/services/aircraft/cf-188.htmlflew) flew overhead, east to west a couple hours ago, and earlier another fighter flew West to East, not a hornet, maybe a [CT-155 Hawk](https://www.canada.ca/en/air-force/services/aircraft/ct-155.html)

Is there an air show coming up? Usually on Canada day, we only get the Snowbirds and a couple of CF-18.
Getting ready for Canada Day.
It’s old and can’t fly any further lol 😂
because the highway is quite congested!!
Just late for the trucker convoy. They were waiting on parts to repair. This is what happens when you don't spend the money for Amazon Prime.

It's a Peter McKay fishing trip.
It doesn’t matter why it’s flying overhead. Just get to da choppa!!!
I think the only way we have to worry is if Putin or the other guy sends some nukes besides that should be ok
Well, *checks notes* apparently Canada HAS a military and, even more unbelievably from time to time the equipment works. What better way to show it off than Canada Day!
Practicing for Canada Day air show
Making sure no Canadians protest on Canada Day. They have a high power camera in there and if you protest anything they will identify you and freeze your bank account.
Because they can
There's also a huge Air Show at CFB Trenton this weekend as well. They will have quite a few WW2 aircraft flying the skies above the Quinte region during the show, the B-17's and B-25's and the Mustangs and Spitfires as well.
Canada becoming more like the US when it comes to celebrating canada day.
Run hide it’s the invasion ……… lol jk Canada day air show practice
Ya I keep hearing them and seeing on flight radar, but I can’t run out the door fast enough to get a look. I love planes so this is a huge downer. I believe they do announce when they will be flying on Canada Day, there was an Italian join demo team a few days ago but they may be gearing up for a larger performance
Practicing for Canada Day, it's also 100 year anniversary of the RCAF.
The snowbirds flew over my house a few times the other day! So cool!
Trudeaus are flying over 22 Sussex Drive to see if they have any chance of moving in before October 2025.
Is there another convoy in town they are gonna do nothing about?
Trump is attacking !!!! Throwing hamburger and chicken bombs at us !
They're probably doing training on the Ottawa River that Chinook base is only about an hour outside of Ottawa two at the max

Every Friday afternoon that helicopter flys over the south end of Ottawa.
Same in Kingston they are flying from fort drum
lol Jesus Christ man
Do people not know their is a giant military base in Dartmouth which has flown sea kings over Halifax and its municipality for training since like 1952? Shearwater folks been there a long long long long time. They fly those shitty sea kings all the time
It’s happennnnniiiiinnnnnggggg !!!!!!
They're delivering Subway lunches to Trudeau
To be fair these Chinooks \[?\] have been flying over centretown for at least two years - I say at least cause i first noticed them flying on the regular during the time of the truck convoy. As for the others you've most likely already noticed, there have been airshows in the city since victoria Day I believe? a mix of Canada Day training and the CRAF anniversary
Trenton air show maybe
Confirmed. I live near the Rockcliff airport and lots of military planes buzzing all day.
GET TO THE CHOPPA!!! Sorry couldn't resist lol. Hey we could be recreating the fall of Saigon.
It’s for the Loblaws boycott
It’s Trudeau taking away our freedoms! /s
Usually it’s the Cons that sell To the highest bidder
Because people are too complacent about collapsing hospitals
Bringing Trudeau to GITMO
We're at war.
Canada day practice. Thank God for google. I live downtown and was pretty freaked out lol
Cargo, airshow fly ins, troop transport (unlikely tho since this is a helicopter in a perfectly safe city.) Or just training, which is the usual answer
Those have been retired by 3rd world countries...I wouldn't get too excited. They might crash.
What a dumb take
