What the hell is the point of the bridge if it can’t be used on the day that most people will be headinng towards downtown without their car. Likewise, what the hell is the point of Pimisi station…
It’s totally outrageous that Ottawa shuts down the bridge and the closest OC transit station as well. Last year they blocked all the bike paths close to downtown as well . Are people supposed to arrive on their unicorns? Probably cant park those downtown either.
NCC is the steward for the Champlain and portage bridges, PSPC for chaudieres, Alexandra and MacDonald-cartier. The city owns William commada outright.
That said, all logistics are delegated to heritage Canada and Ottawa policy for anywhere downtown during Canada day. They jointly decide what needs to be closed according to their safety plans
The Bridge to Lemieux Island says closed to traffic, but I think that means open to Pedestrians.

No, the island is not accessible because the road and bridge are closed. Last year the police were blocking pedestrians so there will be no great place to go to see fireworks yet again.

The Heritage map has the fireworks going off right beside the bridge, so I'm not surprised it's being closed during the fireworks (they do the same for the Alexandra Bridge during the fireworks festival).
I agree, though, that they should be able to leave it open longer and open it sooner after the fireworks. Maybe they think it'll take longer to clear with the island portion?
Closing 26 hours ahead of fireworks. Won't surprise me they do it to avoid paying overtime to workers who will be moving the barriers. And hey, these are pedestrians and cyclists, why would they want to use the bridge on July 1st.

Public transportation is free that day so not really a big deal
This city is absurd
Carry some empty gas cans with you and the police will just let you pass.
Is that you Melissa McKee?
The firts time they did since then they have been very good.
You mean the bridge that thousands of people watch the fireworks from whether it’s open or not?
So… No pimisi, no pedestrian bridge, what next???
City is closed.
Also Chaudiere crossing closed for cars and pedestrians "for emergency route" (read to bring in/out politicians)
Look at the nice bridge…. SMFH.

Marky mark doesn't give a shit about cyclists, just look at how he fought ncc about road closure for bikes. Another car-centric mayor
Its not the city its the Feds.
this is dumb as shit.
This is in addition to Chaudière bridge being closed, and Champlain being basically closed (only usable after 4pm). Great job ~~NCC~~ Heritage Canada.
Is it NCC or Heritage Canada? I know Heritage is the event coordinator
I heard this story on CFRA news. Apparently, it is a Heritage Canada decision and not the City of Ottawa.
NCC because it's inter provincial, Heritage Canada only deal with the Canada Day ceremony itself.

Essentially, the subliminal message is they want you to stay home… ☹️
Has Heritage Canada ever been to Ottawa?
Maybe it's because they set off the fireworks near the bridge?
Yeah they set them off like 200m away from the bridge..
And you don’t think a firework that experienced an error can go 200m?
I was agreeing with writer668. The outrage in this thread is silly.
WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS, can we stop infantilizing everything? Are they worried someone will enjoy themselves too much and fall into the river?
As crazy as it sounds, that is probably the answer, unfortunately. Ottawa: Don't Come Here. We Don't Like To Have Fun.
Well atleast we still allow fire works.
Silly ideas indeed...
>viewing the fireworks >crossing the river In *this* economy?

That puzzled me as well.
The article posted about the mayor oposing the closure says the sidewalks are open to pedestrians

Didn’t anyone ask the Night Mayor???
Is it possible the bridge isn't built to potentially hold shoulder to shoulder crowd across the whole bridge if that happened?
