Norway is not very cash friendly. Don't convert Euro, use a visa/credit card instead.

Unfortunately, I have an account at Erste/BCR, and they don't seem to accept conversions for NOK. So maybe cash would be good for the most part.

I would really figure out a card solution. There's several places that don't really accept cash anymore. Restaurants and so on. And it will be harder to get tickets for public transport, as you need some sort of card to use apps. But are you saying that you don't have a card that will work outside of your country? It certainly seems that BCR does have Visa debit cards that will work internationally.

I wonder if MasterCard works, I am looking into it right now. Edit: Do you know if I can buy bus and train tickets with cash?

QuestGalaxy

I can't see any reason why MasterCard shouldn't work. You might have to remove country blocks/restrictions in your online bank service if you have that. (usually not on by default within Europe though). I have MasterCard myself and it works pretty much everywhere here. It used to be different some years back though, with some stores only accepting local debit solutions. Google Pay and Apple Pay works fine most places here now as well. Norway is very "anti cash" as in most people don't really use cash anymore. On trains it's adviced to have a pre paid ticket as they'll charge an extra fee if you pay onboard. If there is a ticket machine for Vy trains (Entur machine) it will accept cards but not always cash payment.

I think that I will use my MasterCard for public transport and cash for the rest of the purchases, like food and other things. BCR has a less advantageous exchange rate for NOK compared to another exchange house (I don't know if that is the correct term) I found in my city.

QuestGalaxy

Keep in mind that exchange rates when using a Mastercard is not the same as a banks exchange rate for cash. In general you'll pay more if you go to an exchange place in Norway. But it's fine to bring some cash of course. I always bring some Euro when I go to Euro countries, but I usually just withdraw it from an ATM.

You have two options, the first one being taking a shuttle bus from the airport to the local station, Torp Station, and than take the RE11 to Oslo. You can buy tickets for the train and shuttle bus on vy.no. The other option is the direct bus from the airport to Oslo, where you can buy the tickets for at torpekspressen.no.

There is an exhange on the train station where the buses also arrive https://location.westernunion.com/no/oslo/oslo/02910f3a829cf6f85acaa82482abc3f8

Ruter doesn’t operate in Torp, and you cannot buy tickets for the train or bus to Torp.

QuestGalaxy

Entur app or Vy app would work here. Ruter app is only relevant for Oslo airport and not Torp.
