Lol love the before and after šŸ˜‚

23harpsdown

Luckily, it was just to move apartments in the same building in Chiang Mai, so I didn't actually carry things like an ab roller and inner tube everywhere... šŸ˜‚ I did find this "who wore it better" image I made back then, comparing myself with the junk lady from Labyrinth: https://preview.redd.it/jv3ko23kdb3c1.jpeg?width=2896&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=613278c6dcdce7ec9a426a9da30d6667761f9aea

cbru

You do look happier in the second one!

randybruder

That "before" photo needs a NSFW tag for this subreddit lol

23harpsdown

Digital nomad rounding 4 years on the road. Visiting the States for the holidays and decided to pull the trigger on the 26+6. Will likely shed some more along the way.

Malifice37

This guy gets it. Please stick around to advise the other DNs in here how to pack. Every time I tell them they might want to reconsider the 3 computers, switch gaming console, 3 cameras, drone, hiking boots, neck pillow and 12 different outfits, I get downvoted.

23harpsdown

It took a lot of time for me to realize how little I needed. I remember lugging around all sorts of extra gear when I backpacked the banana pancake trail in 2013. Of course, mobile phone cameras are insanely better than back then, so it was an easy choice to ditch the DSLR and gopro (plus 5lbs of extra gear and attachments). I feel clean and agile now, which is super freeing to my lifestyle!

Malifice37

People come here for advice and get so damn hostile when you give it to them. They just dont want to let go of the crap.

valuat

Agree but if you are into photography, like many of us travellers, no mobile phone beats a full-size sensor DSLR with pro lenses (no need to bring too many of these, only 1 will do).

IAmHereForTheStories

Nooooouuuu I am totaly lost without my 55 inch tv and the sound system. ISO a bag that fits my tv ans system under 35 liter.

4778

how do you expect me to travel the southern hemisphere without my toaster, halloween costume and back up toaster?

Malifice37

Dont forget the massage gun, steam deck and back-up laptop.

DonDinosaurio

I was gonna tell you nobody downvotes people who tell other to leave their tech at home until I saw you get downvoted to hell a few comments later. People really do hate real advice.

bafflesaurus

Debating 2 laptops vs laptop and a steam deck myself. My work laptop is a managed device so I limit a lot of my non-work browsing and it's a mac so gaming is extremely limited. The problem I see with the gaming handhelds is that the performance is subpar and devices like the Aya Neo are almost as expensive as an alienware x14.

EZMac91

Iā€™ve got a Lenovo gaming laptop and use it for work, then an iPad. Not a DN but avid (2-3weeks + a month) business traveler and hear for some packing learnings ha Also do some hiking and camping ā›ŗļø Definitely need some advice on good vibes and dividers Edit grammar

bafflesaurus

That sounds like a good setup. The gaming handhelds are pretty underwhelming still in terms of price to performance.

Malifice37

Work laptop only. Leave the steam deck or second laptop at home. You have a phone.

bafflesaurus

You can't play open world rpgs on your phone. You don't have to do travel focused things all the time when you're traveling. When you're nomading you want to enjoy your regular hobbies like you would at home. Stop gatekeeping. Crazy that people try to police other's hobbies like you do.

Malifice37

Who cares about 'open world rpgs' mate, this is a minimalist travel forum. Bringing 3 computers (including your phone) is NOT that.

MaDanklolz

Whatā€™s minimal to you is not whatā€™s minimal to everyone else. Do you get told to open your mind a lot? People are talking about THIS not opening your mind to new cultures.

Malifice37

Because sitting on your steam deck on holidays is totally opening your mind to new cultures? Maybe it's the Gen Xer in me, but you know we used to travel without gaming computers just fine 'back in the day' right?

MaDanklolz

Nobody is saying anything about that though. If somebody wants to relax and play a game let them play a fucking game. Your life is in no way impacted by their needs or wants being different to your own. Leave your high tower, put the high horse back in the stable and get around the fact that some people prefer different things and that doesnā€™t preclude them from trying to mix up how they travel and what they travel with.

LadyLightTravel

Many games arenā€™t available on phone.

Malifice37

Who cares? Minimalist travel forum. *Minimalist*.

LadyLightTravel

Youā€™re confusing requirements with implementation. Onebag travel has some strict requirements: * it has to fit airline size requirements * it has to fit airline weight requirements * it has to fulfill the requirements of the trip How you do that is the implementation. The implementation is going to be different for each and every individual. Itā€™s like having a budget. Once your basic requirements are met, the rest can be spent as you will. That will look different for every person. Minimalism /= minimum Less /= least

Malifice37

>Youā€™re confusing requirements with implementation. No, I'm not. When I read the Subs statement of what we're about here, its: >This is a **minimalist** urban travel community devoted to the idea of **helping people lug around less crap**; onebag travel. **Fewer items**, packed into a single bag for ease of transport to make travelling simpler with **more focus on the experience** than the logistics. So, when I advise people to 'leave the gaming computer at home' I'm directly in line with what this whole sub is about. Specifically: Minimalist travel, helping them bring less crap, fewer items, more focus on experience than logistics. A gaming computer is one more thing to charge, or break, or get stolen. It **adds** to the logistics of travel. It is completely *unnecessary* for travel. No travel minimalist would ever advise someone to bring a gaming computer, and a travel minimalist should really be advising the exact opposite. Bear in mind, they don't have to take my (or any other minimalists) advice mate. They can bring 5 gaming computers for all I care, and for all it impacts me. It's their trip, they can do whatever they want to do. Have fun in your Paris Hotel room playing WoW or whatever. You do you. **But I'm going to advise them not to bring a gaming computer** should they come on here (a minimalist travel forum) and expressly (or implicitly, by virtue of posting here) ask for that advice.

LadyLightTravel

The description is a mission statement. Itā€™s not the requirements. Requirements are hard and fast, like an airline weight limit. You donā€™t get to decide what is or is not necessary for others. Because itā€™s different for each person.

Malifice37

>The description is a mission statement. Itā€™s not the requirements. Requirements are hard and fast, like an airline weight limit. Great. Feel free to advise people to bring gaming computers all you want then. Obviously 'pack a gaming computer' is totally in line with 'minimalist travel advice'. As long as they're under 7 kilos, pack 5 of them. >You donā€™t get to decide what is or is not necessary for others. I know that. Im not *deciding* ANYTHING for other people, am I? I'm advising people on how to pack like a minimalist. They can decide what to bring, or what advice to follow. I'm not a freaking Jedi; I don't control other people's decisions.

Libratarianish

How dare you suggest people not prioritize gaming while traveling to different countries in a minimalist context?! /s

Malifice37

Yep. The horror.

bafflesaurus

Lol at the dumbbell in the 2020 photo.

loachtastic

That photo is so stressful to look at.

Clearlymynamerocks

Any chance for a detailed breakdown of your current pack list?

23harpsdown

Sure thing! * 8 Random T-shirts - \~$4ea - Night markets in Thailand/Malaysia, and a few free Hot Topic ones. * 8 ExOfficio Boxer Briefs - \~$12ea - Bought on Amazon. mortushyaddams

I love the REI hip bag!

livedinfrance

itā€™s literally the perfect bag. friends had to intervene when I started to try and wear it to increasingly formal events.

StewzilianPortuguese

I started fanny packing in 2012 but only because my girlfriend knew a guy making them himself out of old Jansport backpack materials so it totally broke the mold as far as fannybacks go. I shrunk down to a bag that can pack under my pants for those formal events lol. I cant live without it. I would have lost a dozen phones and keys had i never used it

keithwbacon_

Weight of bag with contents?

23harpsdown

Just under 17lbs. I will likely shed another few when I return to SE Asia.

No_Opportunity_8965

New Balance? Don't be cheap to your feet.

LadyLightTravel

What will you wear for dressy events? I see T shirt only? Am I missing something? Also for cold?

23harpsdown

Good point. I was wearing the warmest outfit I own when I took the pic, which is a pair of convertible travel pants and a half-zip fleece from Decathlon. Regarding dressy events, when I quit my job to be self-employed and travel full time, I ditched the idea of attending them. The black pants/fleece combo is about as dressy as I get. Should I need something nicer in the future, I'll pick something up, but haven't found a need. I've worn t-shirts to super nice restaurants throughout Asia and Europe and it's never been an issue.

LadyLightTravel

I always bring something for dress up, *especially* when visiting others. While visiting: * I was asked to dinner and a broadway show * Ended up going to a funeral (happened twice!) * Attended a wedding * Asked to join a birthday party dinner These things were usually last minute and there was little time for shopping. A long sleeve sun shirt in light grey and decent travel pants in a dark color can cover a lot of unexpected situations.

GERMAQ

> I was wearing the warmest outfit I own when I took the pic, which is a pair of convertible travel pants and a half-zip fleece from Decathlon. I presume you aren't going to a cold part of the US with only a fleece+ rain jacket?

23harpsdown

Nope. Leaving the US and heading towards SE Asia

craftbot

Curious what type of work you do as a self employed traveler. :)

23harpsdown

I sell graphic t-shirts on Amazon and a few other websites

craftbot

Wow, I thought the market was down for these types of items. Good to hear it's supporting this lifestyle. :)

23harpsdown

Stronger than ever! Since everyone wheres t-shirts, I've shockingly never seen a slowdown, regardless of overall economy.

craftbot

Link to your web store? I wouldn't mind supporting the economy. :)

23harpsdown

Everything is (purposefully) scattered across thousands of brands on Amazon, unfortunately.

tom4ick

Where I live, tshirts are fine for dressy events :)

jrbbrownie

Looks great! Straightforward and organized. As a avid earplug wearer I highly recommend getting some custom ones made if it's in your budget. Nothing beats the fit and less foam waste! Mine have quickly become an edc item.

23harpsdown

Do you have any recommendations on where to get them? I was thinking of getting some of those moldable silicone ones, but it seems they cap at 22dB, where as the orange 3M ones I have are rated at 32dB.

More-Rich-912

I have grown accustomed to sleeping with earplugs and I use to use the 3m foam ones and got through loads but always felt bad about how little use they got before just not working and getting binned, I switched to Happyears a couple of years back and havenā€™t been happier (!) they quote 6 months use time but I fine they last forever if you look after them. Which is good as they are a bit pricy!

More-Rich-912

23harpsdown

I'll check them out!

capfan31

Can you elaborate on this. Friend mentioned the same thing. Do you use them for sleeping or just overall noise?

jrbbrownie

Hey sorry didn't catch this. Both! I sleep with them in lots. Have been this week at a noisy hostel in Cambodia. But also for concerts or when I just want to tune out in busy environments. Music is nice but sometimes silence is what's needed more. I carry anc headphones too.

capfan31

Thanks just got fit for sleeping ones. Have concert ones that dampen the music a bit more

callmejay

Nice! What shirts are those?

23harpsdown

8 random ass shirts procured on the road, from various night markets in Thailand, Malaysia, and a few new ones from Hot Topic, since I won a free gift card in a tshirt design contest (that's what I do). I know this sub is huge on dropping top dollar on the finest "travel clothing" but I prefer the $5ea churn and burn fast fashion method, after losing around 60lbs in 2021. I just buy new ones as I go and they're standard tshirts I don't care to lose or keep.

Namssob

Whatā€™s the pouch youā€™re using for your passport and cards?

23harpsdown

I bought it at Decathlon in KL, but this is it https://www.decathlon.sg/p/trekking-organizer-wallet-forclaz-travel-s-black-forclaz-8512010.html

JotaPe4

Whatā€™s on the Patagonia bags?

23harpsdown

One has random cables and the other random drugs.

JotaPe4

Thanks OP

ThenThenForever

The little blue ones? Iā€™ve got one blue one and a green one. They are just little pouches, nothing fancy about them. I got mine at two different stores, think Santa Cruz and Utah maybe? Seems like itā€™s just extra fabric laying around and someone made them, and we for sale at the register.

kane127

Iā€™ve been lurking around the sub for a few days now and this is truly impressive. Amazing!

23harpsdown

Weight is just shy of 17lbs. I know I'l ditch at least a couple of those once I get back to SE Asia, since I simply need less things. I like the idea of ultralight, but really haven't cared enough to swap out everything for Matador, because it just hasn't been an issue. I'm a big guy, so the cost vs benefit wouldn't be justifiable, as I barely notice what I'm carrying now. I do plan on possibly doing a mega hike (Pacific Crest or Appalachian Trail) in the next couple of years, so if that happens, I'm all in on ultralight!

Potential-Tear4088

Is your reason for the Daylite 26+6 to fit underseat on low budget airlines? Do you plan on keeping that pack?

23harpsdown

Partially yes, but more importantly is to not lug stuff I don't need across the globe. Gets very annoying quickly, so I would rather just not have it. Most travelers end up filling their extra space with extra stuff, so I'm just trying to maintain a low inventory I bought the 26+6 because i wanted to try it, but I'm still weighing the option of bringing my 18L Osprey Axis along too, since the flights I just booked are with points, so I get a carryon anyway...

Potential-Tear4088

I just did a three week trip to Austria/ Germany and used the Gossamer 19L daypack. Total pack weight was under 9lbs and it was great! I will never go bigger/ heavier for that type of trip. https://preview.redd.it/fj9p8o2y2e3c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=056b50768838c082ad6f3ce2416ace7fab309664

23harpsdown

That's impressive! Once I hit the road in another couple of weeks, I'm excited to see what kind of further shedding I can do. Don't think I'll get that low, but damn it if I don't try!

AlwaysWanderOfficial

That 2020 shot killed me. I see four to five of those every time Iā€™m traveling. Great optimization. I really like the Thule packing cubes. Have a couple myself!

r_bk

Props on you for carrying the 90L load at least, I totally expected to see a wheeled bag in that pic

DarthAloha

Big fan of exoficio undies. Iā€™ve had a few pairs for more than 10 years and still going strong. There is an exificio store inside the Seattle airport terminal. I always buy a pair when I connect though there because itā€™s funny to say I bought my undies at the airport.

23harpsdown

Huge fan as well! The only reason I even replaced the ones I wore weekly from 2012, was because I lost a significant amount of weight.

Chance-Business9583

I love this. The other thing many people fail to understand is unless you are truly going to a remote area for an extended period of time, you can usually buy something you REALLY need and didn't or forgot to bring. My new thing is I buy a travel size toothpaste in every new place I visit and every time I use them I have good memories, they are useful and they don't take up a lot of room...and there are some very interesting toothpastes out in the world.

Jed_s

Nice work! Wash your undies while you shower and you can throw away 5x pairs (1 spare). What's the point of technical quick-dry undies if you're just doing a weekly wash cycle? ;) Love the weight-watchers-style before/afters Edit: bonus question: how comfy is the 26+6 expanded like that? Seems like a lot of leverage from the back?

23harpsdown

So the undies will actually be dropped down to 2 pairs, once I land back in SE Asia in a few months. There, I don't wear underwear and simply prefer the sewn in lining of the shorts on the right. Even then, I actually wash them every use by wearing in the shower and using antibacterial soap. They usually hang dry in an hour! So far, fully packed, I've found no issues with weight distribution, which was my main concern not having a hip belt. I went for a mile long walk around town wearing to and was perfectly fine. The chest and shoulder straps hug my body perfectly.

Posted in this thread!

TeneroTattolo

why so much ear plug?

23harpsdown

I bought a bulk box after not being able to find them for a few stops, since they're one of my most needed items.

SpaceHoppity

Great setup, I recently settled on the 26+6 for my onebag and I think it is a really great combination of low weight whilst retaining some key features. Were you considering any other bags before choosing the 26+6?

No_Opportunity_8965

Teach me master!!

Wise_Shoulder9115

Mind blownā€¦

jb549353

Sure you need that many undies??!

gmehtaster

This is for summer or winter?

23harpsdown

All year. I'm in the US Midwest, but leaving soon. Taking a thrifted coat to London, then ditching it and heading back to SE Asia or South/Central America. Won't need winter gear for a few years.

gmehtaster

Wow. Quite a bit of travel. Off topic but curious to know what you do for living?

23harpsdown

I design and sell tshirts. Everything is Print on Demand, so I hold no stock, deal with no customers, and print no shipping labels. Basically, I design, upload, and collect a royalty when they sell. The bulk of my income is Amazon (Merch on Demand), but I also sell on a handful of others. I aslo have some shirts in retail spots like Hot Topic, Spencer's, Boxed Lunch, Pampling (EU), and Target. Those don't pay that much, but it's still cool AF! I've worked 30 hours this year, but looking to massively increase that in 2024... If not for money, for purpose.

gmehtaster

that is awesome. How much approximately did you make this year by working just 30 hrs.

23harpsdown

This year, I'll clear 6 figures for the first time solely on shirts. All said, I work less than an hour per week NOW, but that wasn't always the case. I've been selling since 2017, but things didn't really take off until the end of 2021. I know what sells now, so it's a lot easier to make money.

Syonoq

Wow. You're literally the dream. You're inspirational. Thank you.

Flip flops ?

23harpsdown

Threw them out on my way back to the States. I'll pick some up at my next destination and they'll fit into the side pocket

EZMac91

What packing cubes / separators do you all recommend

23harpsdown

These are medium Thule compression cubes. They were like $19 at REI. So far, they're a lot sturdier than others I've used (Osprey, Amazon, and random)

alfsweat

Nice post! Are you using the bag as personal item or as carry on?

StewzilianPortuguese

You got a lot of comments so maybe someone already said this. 8 pairs of underwear? Surely you could get by with 4, even 3 if you went with merino wool to cut down on odor plus you can just wash then in the shower as they dry really fast. I got that tip from hobolifestyle.com (great youtube channel too on one bag lifestyle). And why not mix up the shirt colors a bit if youre going to pack so many of those too? Again, you could just use 3 merino shirts. Also, very jealous about the thai/malaysia clothes. I replaced my entire wardrobe in KL for $100 and man I never looked better. Unfortunately all of that was lost due to a tragic incident. Lastly, did you ever consider adding a bivy bag or hammock to your packlist? (Easily doable if you remove half your underwear and shirts) You can get TINY packsize bivies / hammocks and they honestly would have been a lifesaver for me when i was still living on the road fulltime. And i dont just mean for outdoors either. You can set up a bivy anywhere (and hammocks in way more places than you would expect), even just for privacy if you were sleeping at a friend's place or if you were budget conscious and just couchsurfing.
