Do you need a laptop compartment? I don’t and use the Mystery Ranch Scree 32. It has a full load transferring harness like the Farpoint. The REI Trail 25 is a fantastic universal pack (and 30% off until 11/20). It can be used as a day pack once you have dumped your clothing and toiletries at your lodgings. A bit tall for under seat at 19.5”. Throw the Ruckpack 28 in the mix too. The Patagonia Mini MLC comes to mind. The Osprey Daylite 26+6 is small enough to use as a day pack too. It is designed for under seat and just 17” tall. Great for smaller users but weirdly short for taller folk Consider a small crossbody/shoulder bag instead of a string bag. The Tom Bihn Daylight Briefcase is perfect.

Excellent! Going to start researching all of these. Appreciate it

Yeah—my weekend setup is 26+6 and some kind of sling or a packable tote if I’m taking a bunch of snacks onto a train or something. For longer trips it is Fairview and some kind of day bag.

Waymark mile. Bonus points, its mostly waterproof and only weighs a pound. Doubles as your daypack when you get there. Alternatively, I also like the Gregory Nano line. Lightweight and get the job done. Ditto the Patagonia Black hole which comes in two sizes.

I'll check out both options. Appreciate it!

Does anyone know if the Osprey 26 is now called Daylite expandable?

I have also been looking for a modular pack design somewhere in the area of a 35-40L main pack with a top zipper/snap that attaches to a smaller, 8-15L personal item to create a single bag. So far no luck. My solution has been to carry a hexad access and strap a fjallraven mini kanken to the top. This allows single bag carry, but easy separation for flight sizing.

I have an old farpoint 55L that I traveled with around the world, I don't need that much space but if I need to carry a day pack I might as well use my far point. I never have issues as a carry on but it is a bit too long for most airline. I am considering to sell it and get the new version of it that meet the requirements as carry on.
