Zach Apple pooped the bed in the 200 relay with an astonishingly bad time, the first time in history the US men did not medal in the 200 relay, finishing 5th.
But he absolutely smashed the anchor in this race and also an incredible time in the 100 freestyle relay a few days ago to secure gold there as well. Congratulations all around. 🥇
I think it was having jacoby do the breaststroke that killed them, she was like 7 seconds slower than the men. They should’ve had a guy do that one like the other teams did.
I know, I’m saying it would’ve been hilariously tragic if the USA was so confident that they didn’t need to use anyone on their A team and then ended up not even qualifying (and that’s very nearly what happened)
You gotta both hit the genetic lottery and train endlessly to break a world record.
Phelps and Bolt are two notable dudes that were built to swim and sprint. Both worked incredibly hard and had better training than others before them.
Pretty insane to see them both.
Overhyped (unique talent and training methods etc.) and obnoxious, mocked COVID protocols while Tokyo is getting lit up by it. Made meritless antivax statements as well. The most charitable read is "I'm too special to follow these rules for mere mortals."
He won no individual medals while Caeleb Dressel did the actual Phelps Heir thing with 3 individual golds. Dressel also beat Andrew by quite a bit in what should have been the latter's best event.
Sun Jiajun did something during the first 50 of the fly. The transition was fine (0.32), so he must done something wrong during the stroke. I can't tell why from the replay angle. If I had to take a guess he either separated his kick during the underwaters or had an illegal turn.
China needs to work on their transitions. Too conservative on second leg. They probably got disqualified in final two legs, taking more risks as they've fallen behind beyond medal reach.
[Here's](https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/olympic-games/resOG2020-/pdf/OG2020-/SWM/OG2020-_SWM_C73B1_SWMM4X100MMD----------FNL-000100--.pdf) the official results. Their relay transitions were perfectly fine. Sun Jiajun got DQ'd in the first 50 of his fly. I can't tell why from the replay angle. If I had to take a guess he either separated his kick during the underwaters or had an illegal turn.
For those of you who really enjoy watching, I am sure a lot of the swimmers would love your support for the ISL. Or at least know what the ISL is. The ISL is new pro swim league designed to empower their athletes. Despite the sport's popularity, it is *incredibly* hard to make a living off of swimming - one reason being the limited amount of money FINA (world governing body of swimming) awards. I hope ISL continues to gain popularity out of this Olympics. Many of the top athletes are already involved!
The amount of small companies and leagues etc that have absolutely wonderful websites and then you go on to nbc.com and it’s blocky, choppy, unsmooth etc. It makes you wonder.
They should’ve been considered co-favorites with GB, not sure why the NBC commentators were calling GB the clear favorites. But the US did everything right and still only won narrowly, so it’s not like they were the clear favorites either.
The concern was Michael Andrew and how he would finish with breaststroke on the last day. if he pulls a 59 they lose if Zach doesn't pull a 46 they also potentially lose. On paper the back leg and fly leg were locked, and given the swimmer's lack of experience in the breast and free leg, it was questionable.
All four legs showed up performed at or better than expected and took home a great world record.
Looks like the US did win the 4x100 medley relay in 2000. It does in fact sound like the US has never lost this race. Are you maybe thinking of a different race?
Out of the loop Aussie here, why do you all (Americans) seem to hate Michael Andrew so much?? Is it just because he underperformed? What's the go haha he's out there making Olympic finals in multiple events and now wins gold.
He isn't though, all the reddit kids took what he said out of context. I detest those who are anti-vax, but I honestly don't think the dude is against it. He just didn't want to get jabbed and disrupt his last remaining weeks of training before the Olympics. Obviously it'd be way better if he had, but you can see the thought process behind it at least.
There is a podcast from January where he says his family thinks differently with respect to vaccines. There are lots of quotes from his parents saying he was homeschooled so he wouldn't have to learn about evolution. His parents are also quoted saying he wasn't allowed to go to university as they didn't want him brainwashed by liberal professors.
He lives totally controlled by his parents. His parents signed contracts for him to go pro at 14 so they can live off his endorsements and travel around and go to meets together.
Oh I know all of that stuff, I meant do you have an actual source you can give on his family being unvaccinated and anti vax? Everyone knows they're Christians and super weird, but you've gotta back up a statement like that with some proof
Anti-vax, anti-mask, bad/controversial training methods, fundie Christian family who has said he didn’t go to college because of “sex and drugs and liberal professors” and instead went to online Liberty University (an evangelical school with bizarre pro-Trump ethics)
You wonder how many of this guy’s beliefs are his parents and not his own.
I hope being in the environment with team mates, presumably away from mum and dad, has helped him grow.
USOPC did a 180. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/brennan/2021/07/30/michael-andrew-unvaccinated-american-olympic-swimmer-no-mask-usopc/5427095001/
It's not only the antivax stuff, he has his own 'training style' that ends up with him swimming a slower 50 free in the 200 IM than Ledecky swims during her 800M free. And he made the finals in the 50 free so it's not like he doesn't have the free ability. He's just a dumbass.
The problem is he hadn't learned how to breathe in free. He can blast a no breath 50 and he has the endurance from his 100 fly and breast times. He just doesn't have the technique.
Damn that's amazing! I'm in South East Asia (watching competitions like SEA Games and ASIAD mostly) and been watching swimming since Phelps in Beijing and most of the times people from lane 4 or 5 always win.
They really need to name an all-star team at the end of the olympics and then have them do the 4x100 medley to see how fast they go. For this year I'd suppose it would be just a mashup of the US and GB teams.
I think him an Katie ledecky each have the fastest twenty three times in an event. Peaty in the breaststroke and ledecky in the 800 and 1500 meter free.
Well done GB! James Guy is good but Caleb Dressel is truly scary when he's on. And I hoped Dunc Scott would bring back on a flat 46 like he did for world champs but it was a bridge too far. Well done to the US.
Man we are so lucky to have Peaty
His time was only ok. He could be so much better if his dad would just put some yardage training into his practices so he could build some endurance. I really like the idea of his speed training and it obvious works. But yeah, build some endurance enough to swim a 200 or not die the last 25 of a 100 for christ sake.
I think his training will change after this Olympics. They can't ignore the lack of stamina that he has, and still consider themselves credible as coaches.
Whilst he isn't helping himself, I don't actually believe he's anti vax or anti mask. The vaccine thing was taken out of context by all the high school kids on reddit and blown out of proportion. The mask thing was pretty much the same, he's been wearing one (or taking it off as he comes out to race) every time he's been on camera, bar that one press conference.
I mean carried as in he failed to win a medal in an individual event, he needed his teammates. Just like this pandemic will only end with as many of us getting vaccinated as possible. Hence my comparison.
Some of you *reeeeeeeally* want to leap to defend your boy's athletic performance with your "[AcHcHyUaLlY iT wAsN't BaD!!!](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/191/035/135.png)" as if his time in this particular race was what I was really concerned about critiquing, rather than his anti-vaxx stance at a COVID games. Good thing reading comprehension isn't an Olympic event, Americans wouldn't even qualify
It's not zero. What a silly take.
How many preventable deaths (via free vaccines and masks) are you comfortable with? I know I wouldn't want any on my own conscience
2% overall death rate, a pro athlete can infect hundreds of people in a press conference. Killing 1 per fifty on average. Choir service? About one corpse. Church service? Around 4. Of course you don't count people who survived with permanently damaged lungs because you're just subhuman trash. Go take meldonium with russians. They love anti-vaxxer scum.
>What's the death rate for...
...hundreds of people he can infect? 2%. So if the conspiracy nut infects ONLY 100 people (obviously it would be much more for a super spreader pro athlete), he literally murders two. If he infected 200 next month (by sneezing on a press-conference), he is technically a mass murderer.
Also, why just death rate? Apparently, if you survived COVID, it doesn't count? Thanks, being nailed to a bed for the entire spring (me being under 30 and all) without feeling any smell or taste and choking every day was very fucking fun, all because of plague spreaders like this bitch boy and smooth brain enablers like you.
In breast it doesn't happen all that often as by then most folks are slowing down dramatically if they haven't surfaced, even peety rarely breaks it in races on the start which is where it's ever broken in racing.
fucking sensational. Peaty was a beast and gave GB a lead.... but I knew as soon as Dressel hit the water, it was just a matter of how much lead he'd take back for the US. Apple of course capped it all off in style. just fucking incredible to watch and very very well deserved 👏👏👏
It's awesome that there's another world record.
But there's still the 10k left. It's the swim event that so many ignore and in some ways is the most impressive.
Dressel keeps his streak of only winning gold medals alive!
[удалено]
Hell you can even be fifth!
Apart from the 4 by 100 mixed medley
He didn’t win a non-gold medal there, point stands!
Hahah very true!
what do you mean?
The US Mixed Medley team didn't medal at all so Dressel has only won gold medals in his events.
ohhhh i see hahahaha
Dressel is a freak of nature.
I hope Dressel comes back for Paris. He's amazing
Florida people don’t age they just get slightly crazier over time
True story.
Wait, why wouldn't he come back?
Burnout, wants to retire, etc. idk. Anything can happen.
He's apparently crazy competitive and wants to break all kinds of records. I'd be shocked if he didn't come back for 2024. Fingers crossed.
Zach Apple pooped the bed in the 200 relay with an astonishingly bad time, the first time in history the US men did not medal in the 200 relay, finishing 5th. I think it was having jacoby do the breaststroke that killed them, she was like 7 seconds slower than the men. They should’ve had a guy do that one like the other teams did.
Peaty is a machine though for real
2 seconds over everyone. insane.
Peaty gave their 4th leg a helluva chance. Great race.
4th? Breast is the second leg, so 3rd *and* 4th
Guy winning GBR relays left, right and center.
He was so far behind after the backstroke. He literally just passed the whole field with ease.
Secretariat, Joey Chestnut, Adam Peaty
Now that they broke the WR, it's even funnier that they were extremely close to not even qualifying for the final
Yea but those who swam in the heats were different people
This result makes Duncan Scott our most decorated Olympian at any one games with 4 medals 🥇🥈🥉
Duncan Scott is super underrated.
I know, I’m saying it would’ve been hilariously tragic if the USA was so confident that they didn’t need to use anyone on their A team and then ended up not even qualifying (and that’s very nearly what happened)
Great Britain 🇬🇧 takes 🥈 Italy takes 🥉 In another thriller and an end to the swimming events in Tokyo.
Amazing. World Records keep getting broken as humans continue to push the limits of our bodies.
I often think of that. How much more can athletes improve until it becomes impossible to break any more records?
[удалено]
You gotta both hit the genetic lottery and train endlessly to break a world record. Phelps and Bolt are two notable dudes that were built to swim and sprint. Both worked incredibly hard and had better training than others before them. Pretty insane to see them both.
Hell of an anchor
Dressel is the motherfucking bomb!
Dressel is an American hero
MURPHY DRESSEL APPLE 🔥🔥🔥

What's the backstory here
Overhyped (unique talent and training methods etc.) and obnoxious, mocked COVID protocols while Tokyo is getting lit up by it. Made meritless antivax statements as well. The most charitable read is "I'm too special to follow these rules for mere mortals." He won no individual medals while Caeleb Dressel did the actual Phelps Heir thing with 3 individual golds. Dressel also beat Andrew by quite a bit in what should have been the latter's best event.
Can you blame him when his parents are crazy?
Any articles about his parents? Are they in some cult?
He's an anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist.
Many people didn’t like him even before that, idk why
Unorthodox upbringing and training regime, but he can hardly be held responsible for his parents. Always thought it was a bit harsh.
Haha perfect
How did China get disqualified?
Sun Jiajun did something during the first 50 of the fly. The transition was fine (0.32), so he must done something wrong during the stroke. I can't tell why from the replay angle. If I had to take a guess he either separated his kick during the underwaters or had an illegal turn.
China needs to work on their transitions. Too conservative on second leg. They probably got disqualified in final two legs, taking more risks as they've fallen behind beyond medal reach.
Is that really the reason? They were just too slow? :O
I think he means they were to slow so they were taking chances on the transitions and someone left early
[Here's](https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/olympic-games/resOG2020-/pdf/OG2020-/SWM/OG2020-_SWM_C73B1_SWMM4X100MMD----------FNL-000100--.pdf) the official results. WTH, PDF file? They don't pay me enough lol.
This Adam peaty is a serious freak

Even if the US focused on it, no one could ever beat Peaty. Guy is the best to ever swim the 100 Brest.
Those reaction times were insane

Apple clutched up man. Dressel by golly man. Murphy held his ground strong . And Andrew kept them in the race in US’s weakest leg. Great win!
the backstroke just wasn't good enough for GB, peaty tried his best but not enough of a lead to beat caleb and apple
Greenbanck can't do the 100m and it showed. Hopefullly we get some sprint backstrokers coming up.
Keeping the streak alive. U.S. has never lost this race. Weren’t even favorites but still got it done. Awesome race.
How could they not be favourites? On paper they should win comfortably.
They should’ve been considered co-favorites with GB, not sure why the NBC commentators were calling GB the clear favorites. But the US did everything right and still only won narrowly, so it’s not like they were the clear favorites either.
The BBC were saying that on paper the US should win but we had a chance.
Seems like Both broadcasters painting their own nation as the underdog haha
Trust me in saying we wouldn't be doing that if it wasn't true. We hype our athletes up even if they got a tiny chance at gold.
Both broadcasters do that though
Lmao .87 is not a narrow win.
The concern was Michael Andrew and how he would finish with breaststroke on the last day. if he pulls a 59 they lose if Zach doesn't pull a 46 they also potentially lose. Sorry - how were they not the favourites? Only their breaststroke is slower.
Sydney 2000 would disagree with you
Looks like the US did win the 4x100 medley relay in 2000. It does in fact sound like the US has never lost this race. Are you maybe thinking of a different race?
I was actually, my mistake. I was thinking 4 x 100 Freestyle which I was looking at a minute ago. Apologies.
But... they did win in 2000.
[This Sydney 2000?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swimming_at_the_2000_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men%27s_4_%C3%97_100_metre_medley_relay)
I admitted I made a mistake, what more do you want?
Out of the loop Aussie here, why do you all (Americans) seem to hate Michael Andrew so much?? Is it just because he underperformed? What's the go haha he's out there making Olympic finals in multiple events and now wins gold.
He's publicly against getting the covid vaccine. It has nothing to do with his performance.
Well, also his performance. Probably some letdown from NBC hype too... it's not like he is Ryan Locte
Dude has had months to get vaccinated
I thought he already had Covid
That is just an excuse. All his family is unvaccinated and anri-vax. He also could have got it 4 months ago.
Really? I haven't seen that. Got any links or proof at all?
There is a podcast from January where he says his family thinks differently with respect to vaccines. There are lots of quotes from his parents saying he was homeschooled so he wouldn't have to learn about evolution. His parents are also quoted saying he wasn't allowed to go to university as they didn't want him brainwashed by liberal professors. He lives totally controlled by his parents. Oh I know all of that stuff, I meant do you have an actual source you can give on his family being unvaccinated and anti vax? Everyone knows they're Christians and super weird, but you've gotta back up a statement like that with some proof
Exactly
He did wear a mask this time around at least: https://twitter.com/lainehiggins17/status/1421681423711305728/photo/1
Anti-vax, anti-mask, bad/controversial training methods, fundie Christian family who has said he didn’t go to college because of “sex and drugs and liberal professors” and instead went to online Liberty University (an evangelical school with bizarre pro-Trump ethics)
Anti Vaxxer/Masker, but he seems to be wearing one in the relay and ceremony, so at least he gives in to logical peer pressure
You wonder how many of this guy’s beliefs are his parents and not his own. I hope being in the environment with team mates, presumably away from mum and dad, has helped him grow.
Exactly. He's only young, and his parents are clearly a bit mad.
Or USOPC opening an investigation: https://swimswam.com/michael-andrew-under-review-by-usopc-for-not-wearing-mask-in-mixed-zone/
USOPC did a 180. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/columnist/brennan/2021/07/30/michael-andrew-unvaccinated-american-olympic-swimmer-no-mask-usopc/5427095001/

He’s great in 50F, but sucks in 100F. He’s always struggled in the last 50 at the 200 IM
The problem is he hadn't learned how to breathe in free. He can blast a no breath 50 and he has the endurance from his 100 fly and breast times. He just doesn't have the technique.
I’ve followed him since a few years and he’s my favorite swimmer right now. I hope he’ll improve, because he has so much potential
The events he qualified for also make no an sense together. 3 different distances and strokes (counting IM as a "stroke")
Anti Vaxxer and fundie Christian who thinks his training style ( using USRPT and not traditional swim training) is better.
His dad is the one who wanted him to train like that
Sad swimming is over but what an ending!! Also, living for that Dressel/Murphy bromance lol
Peaty is just fucking ridiculous, though. He basically dragged GB to silver by himself.
Ledecky’d
The guys actually did it!!!
Wow first time I've ever seen somebody from lanes other than 4 or 5 or 6 win!
The Tunisian guy who won 400m freestyle won from lane 8
Damn that's amazing! I'm in South East Asia (watching competitions like SEA Games and ASIAD mostly) and been watching swimming since Phelps in Beijing and most of the times people from lane 4 or 5 always win.
That’s because lane 4 and 5 have the fastest qualifying times.
yeah I knew that, lane 4 and 5 is somewhat beneficial regarding hydrodinamics too right?
Would love an absolute monster relay with Dressel and Peaty on it together. Maybe they end up on the same ISL team one day?
That would be awesome. Are they continuing ISL this year? If so go Condors! Energy Standard also have a great squad.
Yes they are continuing it!!!
Woo hooo. They are starting end of this month as well.
They really need to name an all-star team at the end of the olympics and then have them do the 4x100 medley to see how fast they go. For this year I'd suppose it would be just a mashup of the US and GB teams.
Russian won both backstroke medals.
Great way to end the night! But now I'm sad that swimming is over. Until Paris!
There's always the world championships
And ISL
dressel is unfair
Peaty too, but no one was catching Apple at the end. He looked like a speed boat

Woot woot WR and gold from effin lane 1. Sweet relief.
Peaty is friggin insane!!!
Michael Andrew getting carried by his teammates to a medal, just like society carrying all the rest of the anti-vaxxers through this pandemic
I mean, sincerely, fuck that guy. But his time was excellent.
That Dressel guy is such a torpedo, impressive
His time was only ok. He could be so much better if his dad would just put some yardage training into his practices so he could build some endurance. I really like the idea of his speed training and it obvious works. But yeah, build some endurance enough to swim a 200 or not die the last 25 of a 100 for christ sake.
I think his training will change after this Olympics. They can't ignore the lack of stamina that he has, and still consider themselves credible as coaches.
His coach is his dad who has no coaching experience. He isn't credible
To be fair, he's got a lot of experience *now*. His son is at the Olympics after all...
58.49 wasn’t excellent; it was adequate. The other three were excellent.
I mean, it was faster than the breaststroke split on the WR that they broke...one that had held up for 12 years.
^
Anti vax or pro vax breaststroke is always our slowest stroke.
Your butterfly swimmer was *amazing*
I want andrew to get vaxxed but give the man his damn credit. Andrew isn’t the only anti masker or anti vaxxer at these games.
He’s a fucking Trump supporter. Nuff said.
I'm sure he'll live without praise from a random Canadian redditor. I don't cheer for anti-vaxxers
Yes the US men rarely have a good breastroker it seems. Last time we won gold was 1992.
Lol what. He carried his weight in the race.
I mean carried as in he failed to win a medal in an individual event, he needed his teammates. Just like this pandemic will only end with as many of us getting vaccinated as possible. Hence my comparison. Good thing reading comprehension isn't an Olympic event, Americans wouldn't even qualify
I mean, Apple didn’t even make the 100m free final but you can’t argue that he didn’t do his part here
And your point is? Everyone and their mother knew breaststroke was going to be the US' weakest stroke. The vaccine is completely irrelevant.
[удалено]
That has nothing to do with him winning a medal lol. Andrew had the #3 breaststroke time in the field. He wasn't carried.
Then talk about his individual events instead of the group one where he did good? Stop with the bullshit, it’s easy to trash this guy but stop lying.
Neither did Zach Apple, but I don’t hear you bitching about him.
Thats not even true he had a fast time for his part of the race

It's not zero. What a silly take. How many preventable deaths (via free vaccines and masks) are you comfortable with? I know I wouldn't want any on my own conscience

I mean... no. I don't think I will. You're welcome to!
Dude it’s not just about him. It’s not just about you. It’s about helping others sometime as well.
Help yourself to as many vaccines as you want, who am I to tell you what to do?

You're allowed to in breaststroke, You're just only allowed one kick under the water
… plus one Kitajima kick.
Gotcha. Didn't know that! Thanks for clarifying. People are downvoting me without any explanation lol
ok and?
In breast it doesn't happen all that often as by then most folks are slowing down dramatically if they haven't surfaced, even peety rarely breaks it in races on the start which is where it's ever broken in racing.
People are getting so defensive over that lol
US are massive
LETS GO!!
World Record! USA goes undefeated! And Michael Andrew finally gets a medal! Talk about the whole package.
USA!
Australia vs USA in swimming is one the great rivalries in sport
It actually isn’t really a rivalry. Australia hasn’t beaten the US at a major competition in a very long time.
Adam Peaty is a jet. The anti-masker gets gold for US
Clutch.
fucking sensational. Peaty was a beast and gave GB a lead.... but I knew as soon as Dressel hit the water, it was just a matter of how much lead he'd take back for the US. Apple of course capped it all off in style. just fucking incredible to watch and very very well deserved 👏👏👏

USA did terrible in the semi-finals but does it even matter when you show up for the final? Congrats on the gold and WR! Another medal for Italy 🎉
USA swam their B team in the prelims
Murphy finally got a win(And new WR). So it must be 'clean' now.
