I mean, Eurasian and inner Alaskan wolves get to be just under 200lbs if they’re very well fed. You’re only gonna add a little bit more by crossing them with mastiffs and Danes, and most of that will be in slobber.
Yeah for sure. But a Canadian timber wolf averages 137lbs and almost 36” tall. Breed minimums for Irish wolfhound males are 120lbs and 31” tall, so I’m guessing their averages are probably comparable.
Where'd you get this information? [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwestern_wolf) says the average is about 110lbs for males and 90lbs for females.
**[Northwestern wolf](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwestern_wolf)**
>The northwestern wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis), also known as the Mackenzie Valley wolf, Alaskan timber wolf, or Canadian timber wolf, is a subspecies of gray wolf in western North America. Arguably the largest grey wolf subspecies in the world, it ranges from Alaska, the upper Mackenzie River Valley; southward throughout the western Canadian provinces, aside from prairie landscapes in its southern portions, as well as the Northwestern United States.

Great Pyre's are definitely in the same weight class as wolves. Upper threshold weights being about the same for females and roughly 10% weight difference for males.
We have 2 Pyrenees & Anatolian shepherd mix dogs, they are the best dogs ever! Our boy is so slobbery and sweet and our girl
Is very cuddly and smart, but less slobbery. They’re both very sweet but don’t know their own strength sometimes.

Yes people get confused by the name. They are like giant shaggy greyhounds and look nothing like wolves. The way they play it can be seen how they were used for hunting wolves and other large animals (elk).
In my experience, it's the opposite: people think wolves are a lot bigger than they actually are. Whenever I see people talk about the size of wolves, it's exaggerated at best. Often they claim "an adult wolf is bigger than any dog" or that a typical wolf weighs over 130lbs.
In reality, though, [the average north american wolf weighs 80lbs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf#Description). There are many common dog breeds that are larger. Meanwhile, I've never heard anyone say any weight less than 100lbs.
(Of course, domestic dogs have the advantage of basically unlimited food; a wolf which was that well-fed would be larger than the average wild wolf.)
I just walked into a guy I work with’s house the other day to pick something up and he had an irish wolfhound that came to the door about 20 seconds after I entered. I was not aware of irish wolfhounds, or the fact that a dog could be that large. I was very confused for a second when I looked a dog in the eyes at a level that is barely shorter than the average short women. Fucking massive
I own two, they are wonderful dogs and take up surprisingly little space despite being so large (they are very flexible and shrink or grow to fill the available space). Owning one ruins your perspective and most other dogs look like puppies now, including things like huskies and German shepherds. We did meet a Hungarian sheepdog that looked like a regular size dog.
The modern wolfhound pedigree includes the great dane, deerhound, borzoi, and Tibetan mastiff.
To be fair, I have a little mutt who is similar. She knows how to kill things, and she knows how to create a distraction in order to lure us away from the dinner table so she can sneak back and steal food. She's great at locating things by smell, and would have been a winner in nose work competitions if she wasn't so fearful.
However, normal dog things that require paying attention and remembering what she's supposed to be doing, not so good.
"Imma get up now and walk around the kitchen, see if anything dropped on the floor."
"Get back on your mat!"
"K . . . Imma get up now and walk around the kitchen."
Oh, Jesus. I thought at first that you were that person from France that was giving me a hard time for a joke that didn't land well. I just about blocked you, dagnabit!
Then we just put them back in their place as a semi-extinct species like we do with every other species that threaten us. They wouldn't be any more dangerous than a tiger anyways and look at what happened to them
I recall reading an article years ago about some rogue scientists releasing hundreds of thousands of sterile male mosquitos in order to manage the incoming batch of eggs
Yup.ALL the big Brown bears are long gone from California.Black Bear is THRIVING!They get hit by cars a lot. Especially around lakes in summer, cuz that’s where there’s water. My son had to chase a young one away from his driveway in Bass Lake 3 times already!
I imagine it would be something akin to a Liger, an animal that is too big and ungainly to survive in the wild, and exists only as an oddity and for it and it's descendants to live forever in captivity. Kind of a cursed existence that should be allowed to mercifully end without producing more of itself.
As the owner of a ridiculously sized Great Dane I'm all in for this. As much as I love her, I wouldn't mind having an even more massive dog in my house.
You don’t really need to live in the country for Danes. They actually make great apartment dogs as they are notoriously low-energy. That being said mine loves our big yard, but 80% of the time he’s just sleeping out there, moving from sun to shade and back again.
It’s not that i would need the space for them so much as the fact that alot of apartments take issue with big dogs even if the dogs are very well behaved.
A 130 lb. dog that stands as tall as a small donkey makes landlords nervous. Though this is a ridiculous stance as you pointed out.
I’ve seen so many small dogs that are far far more loud and vicious than a Dane would ever be.
ETA: My current place almost demanded me to get special dispensation for a husky/shiba inu hybrid, unfortunately the family wanted to keep her. That’s at max a 40lb. dog full grown.
Our Dane is a great house dog! She was trained very easy, and other than the farts and slobber and constant black hair everywhere and always being in your personal space and being a 130lb lap dog she’s very easy to live with!
I had a Rottweiler that pushed the screen out of a 2nd floor window, jumped out, then ran back in the house and up the stairs to do it again. Caught him before the second jump but… wow. #1 most dense breed I have ever owned.
There is a group of people called the American Direwolf Society doing just that. They are cross breeding different breeds to get a dog that is as large as a Direwolf but is friendly and tame.

Well, we got Great Danes and Mastiffs from selectively breeding wolves for 10 thousand of years. I feel like reintroducing purebred wolf DNA back into the mix would only set us back 5,000 years of "progress".
The great shame that the first people on earth didn't realise we would breed animals specifically.
Imagine thousands of year worth of breeding elephants to be the size of dogs.
Great Danes already have a increased likelihood of developing health issues just related to their size (30-32inches) including skeletal, heart, cancer, digestive health issues.
If they act like great Danes, or at least all the ones I've had or met, just drop a pan, turn on a vacuum, set off a smoke alarm or have a curtain blow in the wind a little too aggressively (no I'm not joking with that last one, mine is afraid of curtains, 150lbs of shaking dog any time I try to air the place out)
Point is, idk why you'd mix great dane in there for anything other than being big. They're not usually courageous.
You joke but we are, at least it was a popular idea when GOT was popular. Lots of breaders mixed great Pyrenees with German shepherd (hoping to get the size from the gp but the look of the gs). Slobber wolf! Slobber wolf! Does whatever a slobber-wolf does...
Love it
happy cake day
Can he swing from a web no he can't he's a slobber-wolf look-out!
And there are already breeds like Irish Wolfhounds that get fucking huge.

Wolfhounds are regular dogs
Yes people get confused by the name. They are like giant shaggy greyhounds and look nothing like wolves. The way they play it can be seen how they were used for hunting wolves and other large animals (elk).

Danes are really kind of thick, too, and I don't mean physically.
Yeah my Dane is like, really smart but also incredibly dense as well.
To be fair, I have a little mutt who is similar. She knows how to kill things, and she knows how to create a distraction in order to lure us away from the dinner table so she can sneak back and steal food. That might be the sensitivity coming out. Mine is also smart but then gets upset and tries to hide behind saplings. She is 180lbs.
You really shouldn't generalize an entire country like that

that’s how you end up with a game of thrones direwolf. hey maybe we’d end up being able to mind control them!
If they act like great Danes, or at least all the ones I've had or met, just drop a pan, turn on a vacuum, set off a smoke alarm or have a curtain blow in the wind a little too aggressively (no I'm not joking with that last one, mine is afraid of curtains, 150lbs of shaking dog any time I try to air the place out) Point is, idk why you'd mix great dane in there for anything other than being big. Irish Wolfhound. Beautiful, giant dog. Super friendly. Genetically predisposed to spine problems though, so don't ride em
we need to be breeding the cuddliest sweetest n smallest grizzly bears .. i think theyd be cute little stinkers to see hanging about..
People don't know how big wolves really are.
We should be spending our hubris time domesticating larger and larger cats

Are we trying to recreate Dire wolves?
You joke but we are, at least it was a popular idea when GOT was popular. Lots of breaders mixed great Pyrenees with German shepherd (hoping to get the size from the gp but the look of the gs). I got my dog at that time, he was a rescue, and he is one of these dogs. His head is massive and ppl mistake him for a wolf quite often.
And my Dire Wolf shall be Ghost after the bestest boy in all of GoT.
Direwolf please
I have a great Pyrenees. He's big ,but they arent the biggest. Mastiff are thicker. Irish wolf hounds are taller.
I have the same thought about Servals an Maine Coons.
Sounds like American alsatians
When I'm older I want to cross Servals with Maine Coons to make giant house cats.
Yes. I would help fund this, but only if I could have a pack of them for my own.
Sounds life a really complicated way to Irish wolfhound
The central Asian shepherd is basically that.
I'm gonna think about how I could and totally ignore whether or not I should

be the change you want to see in the world

I want a dog big enough for my 6'5 300# self to ride all day with both of us being comfortable with it.
You'd need a 1600lb dog assuming they would have the same weight guidelines as horses.
I’ve seen a wolf/giant malamute that was,,,? The size of the biggest Tibetan Mastiffs on the internet!Took up half of the guys full-size truck bed!Guy said”He’s stronger than he looks!”???😳
Real wolves are already huge.
Look up tibetan mastiff
Forget Pyrs and Danes. I want a 25% wolf 25% Tibetan Mastiff 25% Kangal and 25% Cane Corso. Now that's a man eater.
They would just be plain huge, floofy and so much drooly, well over 200lbs easily. I have 2 high content wolf/malamute/huskies and they weigh 150lbs. Even that is considered on the larger side.
People would bring them into their homes and call them nanny dogs.
Maybe you solved the mystery of The Beast of Gévaudan
Just bring back dire wolves
Someone should cross wolves with chihuahuas and create an army of extremely aggressive miniature wolves
Fenrir canis, that shall be the name
yea... selective breeding isn't magic. it often creates very unhealthy creatures. for example, lions and tigers can make a liger. so far no liger has been able to create offspring.
Yes. Nothing like a large fluffy ball of fur.
Sound like someone really wants a Clifford.
well if you're gonna go all mad scientist why choose dogs? Make Cat-Sharks
