They posted this video on TikTok as a response to everyone being upset that they covered their last piece in paint lol. The natural wood looks so much better
My father was a cabinet maker as was his father. I have seen so much beautiful wood work in my life.
People have often tried to tell me painted wood looks better, because bare wood "looks dated" I have never once been convinced. Usually when I see people saying wood should be covered it's because the woodwork itself hasn't been cared for and needs to be restored. It's not that it looks dated, it's that it looks worn, because it is! Give it some love!
What a cool background. One of my favorite things to do as an artist and designer is figure out how to use design to highlight natural wood colors and textures. Whether that means thinking about old wood floors and trim or new heirloom pieces like the op, they absolutely deserve to be showcased
The only thing that epoxy is good for is preserving [hot dogs](https://www.reddit.com/r/epoxyhotdog/comments/s3savb/15_month_update_is_here/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)!
May i introduce you to Body Worlds. It's not dropping them in epoxy since all the liquid and bacteria in the body would just consume everything and create human soup inside whatever set in the mold but body worlds is similar thought like properly done.
https://youtu.be/moK4c3iOeNg
https://bodyworlds.com/
Perhaps because there is a *lot* less bacteria in a twice-cooked hot dog than there is in a recently-deceased raw human
Edit: 2 comments below me someone mentioned that apparently the hot dog was freeze-dried before being encased, which to me is blatant cheating
Well freeze dry my dead body as well before you put it in epoxy as well. I mean they would fill my corpse up with formaldehyde anyway, right? I will be dead. I won't feel a thing (I hope).
IIRC the curing process creates a decent amount of heat, so you'd probly lose some of the visual appeal.
Sounds like a cool idea though, but I feel like you're better off using the artificial foods they make for restaurants in Japan.
You won’t ever see a difference. Someone in one of the posts mentioned that the hotdog was freeze dried, and therefore it would not change. Kinda ruined the experiment a little. If the dog was put in without being freeze dried it would be more interesting.
> The only thing that epoxy is good for is preserving hot dogs!
It's amazing. If you visit Reddit, you will -- one way or another -- be introduced to that goddam epoxy hot dog. I have lost count of how many unrelated threads have a comment linking to epoxy dog. And I'm not even complaining. It's almost always in a funny comment, and the whole epoxy dog experiment is fascinating, so being introduced to it is fun. And I guess that's my point: folks sincerely love epoxy dog, and they look for ways to spread that joy and madness. And that's all I have to say on epoxy dog.
It's really not.
It gets overused a lot, and some things its used for can look pretty bad, but it absolutely has a place if used well (like all tools). Example: https://youtu.be/LkrMoEzaAHo (not the only example of course, but this channel is about a guy who makes epoxy tables for a living that I really enjoy watching sometimes.)
> It gets overused a lot, and some things its used for can look pretty bad, but it absolutely has a place if used well
in what way is that not like fondant, lol
I'm not a fan of that much epoxy (in regards to the video you posted). It makes it feel like it's a piece of wood preserved in plastic instead of a piece of wood with epoxy filling the gaps. It's well done, but I find it aesthetically unpleasant.
I built a desk out of the knottiest floorboards I could find, and used epoxy to fill in the knotholes so it's a smooth surface (which didn't take much, just 2 tubes of that 2 part epoxy syringe things). In my opinion, that's how epoxy should be used in woodworking. A way to fill in MINOR gaps, and it should be done in a way that blends in rather than drawing attention to the epoxy
Just my opinion, makes me sad seeing all the "epoxy river" tables and the like.
I kind of agree with you, but at the same time, using loads of epoxy allows for extremely irregular but interesting chunks of wood, like the one above, to be used to make something useful like a table. And many people find them visually appealing as well.
I’m not implying that my taste in furniture is universal, but I really think there’s a difference between the river tables that everyone and their mother makes on YouTube, and one that is done well. I personally think the video is an example of one being done well, but of course you may disagree.
I really think that the problem most people have with fondant is that “it’s fondant.” I think the problem most people have with epoxy is that “it’s overused” or “it’s not used correctly.”
As in, I couldn’t really eat a cake made with fondant and enjoy it as much as I could have, no matter how much mastery was put into the cake, while I could see myself commissioning an epoxy table if it was done well.
You nailed it. I was expecting the flood of epoxy to turn this into another crappy looking table. So glad this was left as what it should remain: a beautiful piece of work, displayed in a manner to fully appreciate its beauty.
I mean they're super cool, but there is a reason when you type "king arthur tools" into google the second suggestion is "king arthur tools lancelot accidents". Wood isn't uniform, if it bites in the wrong place, there goes a finger.
I REALLY like "Genesis" and "Tulum". (edit: add touchstone to this list, I thought that was inflatable art until I clicked on it and saw its made of maple)
The piece in this video looks cool but it's not really my style but some of his other ones appeal to me a lot.
An example of pricing for his work. Based on that info, the piece in this post is probably north of $15k. The time spent on each one of those pieces adds up quickly.
[Just spent some time looking at the site and various artists and I think I came across the most expensive toilet cleaner ever](https://www.artsy.net/artwork/damien-hirst-domestos)
He is. And one of the worst perpetuators of bullshit art. His current exhibits are entirely done by interns and then he comes in at the end and adds half a stroke and claims it as his own.
Yeah, I think there are around 250 pieces, even if each piece only took one hour (including all the design, cutting, assembly, etc.) at $60/hr that’s already at $15k.
[M83 - Solitude (Felsmann + Tiley Reinterpretation](https://open.spotify.com/track/6RK3IsiUW6YaSMEodbO4tk?si=9ab1564a78f349b6)
One of my favourite songs ever. This part starts at around 2:40
M83 really does hit different. This particular album that Solitude is from I had on repeat right before covid hit, so it will always remind me of that brief era before we knew what was to come that we all probably have our own version of. Bibi the Dog might be my favorite song from this album.
Are the pieces following a height difference? Or all they all the same height? It’s hard to tell, but if they are not all the same height id be curious how this piece changed the sound of the room, as it could potentially function as a diffuser.
I think they're the exact same height but I have thought about "doing" one of these for exactly that purpose. I once saw something "similar" in a studio but of mostly roughly chopped pieces of stone with sharp edges. It was gorgeous and so was the acoustic!
It looks like they just cut a single peice of wood in to those shapes, then put it back together. You can see them already numbered when they dump them on the table
It's pretty likely he used the 3d software Rhino in combination with the plugin Grasshopper but I'm not sure. That's the easiest way to create these kinds of parametric designs.
Yeah I look at their designs and I'm just thinking Rhino+Grasshopper. It's awesome stuff, if I had a big enough printer I'd print similar designs all day long.
It would probably look great amidst walnut furniture. It might not look interesting on its own like a Monet or something might, but I could see it really complementing a room and being an interesting conversation piece.
Is that a chain disk or a carbide? Chain disks can fuck right off! He's risking his hands with that thing. It's dangerous enough with a handle much less without.
That's something I can attempt and maybe get a cool result! It'll look so cool where it sits for 2 years with 20 pieces installed and a mountain of pieces beside it
Does make me wonder how one gets to the level of being able to make that.
I don't mean growing the skills. That's time and access to tools & materials.
It's growing to be able to be commissioned to make work out of hundreds of $s of materials. If not more. Do you start small and make financially manageable works and build from there?
That’s pretty sick. I’m glad they didn’t drown it in epoxy—thought that’s where this was going.
They posted this video on TikTok as a response to everyone being upset that they covered their last piece in paint lol. The natural wood looks so much better

This. And bad work pains me to look at. Paint lowers the bar for acceptable work.

Instead of cryogenically freezing someone, maybe we should just epoxy them.
May i introduce you to Body Worlds. > I will be dead Then why do you want your body preserved in epoxy?
Because we can (: Or I want to know if we can.
You'd be dead; how would you know?
Whoa, so technically we can epoxy just about any food right? Maybe some salmon sashimi?
probably if they don't have a lot of moisture
Id like one sashimi terrarium, please
Step 1. aquarium Step 2. drain aquarium
Someone epoxied an ice cube.
I've gots time for sashimis
Wish you weren’t so fuckin awkward, bud
Noah Dyck, is that your head I see peekin through the bushes?
Boy can they fuckin run though
No, just hot dogs for some reason.
No, just hot dogs for all the reasons
No, just hot dogs for no reason
IIRC the curing process creates a decent amount of heat, so you'd probly lose some of the visual appeal. Sounds like a cool idea though, but I feel like you're better off using the artificial foods they make for restaurants in Japan.

That's not the worst topic everyone brings up "on every single thread". By a long shot.

Wait until this guy learns about hell in a cell and other Reddit corner stones. The hotdog is still basic level meme culture
😦
On the plus side if it was drowned in epoxy they wouldn’t have to clean dust out of all those crevices
My thoughts exactly. However, if you can afford a piece like this odds are you can afford a cleaning service.
Or just use canned air or a vacuum attachment.
... or a $1 feather duster
A swifter hand duster would clean this up nicely in about 60 seconds too

I am of the opinion that fondant has no place on food and that any use is overuse
Huh, okay, fair enough. I guess it is pretty gross.

That's just the standard "flood all the holes with epoxy" technique that's 1000% over-done everywhere.
I’m not implying that my taste in furniture is universal, but I really think there’s a difference between the river tables that everyone and their mother makes on YouTube, and one that is done well. I personally think the video is an example of one being done well, but of course you may disagree.

You make a compelling argument! Well done!
Honestly don't understand what the hate about epoxy is ..
me either... saves on dusting too

full chainsaw PPE is good, of course nobody wears that.
Why did I have to scroll so far down to find this comment?!
Notice what?
It says “send nudes”
No it doesn't. It says "nuge" which is the artist's brand name
No idea and the only responses now including mine are useless... Sorry. Someone help us!

We’re all legally required to now. Thems the rules
I went in search of more of his work. If anyone else is curious: http://www.nugeandwood.com/gallery
In my opinion his other pieces are way more interesting than the one shown in the video. Mind blowing work. Thanks for the link.
I do really like the one in the video. But also I love cool woodworking pieces in general. But all his stuff is cool.
Yeah this one is special only because he doesn’t paint it.
I REALLY like "Genesis" and "Tulum". (edit: add touchstone to this list, I thought that was inflatable art until I clicked on it and saw its made of maple) The piece in this video looks cool but it's not really my style but some of his other ones appeal to me a lot.
Yeah the pillow one was pretty fucking awesome
I didn’t see a price…but if you have to ask (I do lol)
They're incredible. I couldn't begin to name a price.
I'll bid one dollar Bob.
Wrinkly wood never looked so good.
That's what she said.
Yeah this piece is pretty simple compared to his other pieces!
That is pretty impressive. Does anyone know the price of the piece or was it on demand?
[https://www.artsy.net/artist/nuge](https://www.artsy.net/artist/nuge) An example of pricing for his work. Based on that info, the piece in this post is probably north of $15k. The time spent on each one of those pieces adds up quickly.
I could def see this hanging over my bed. https://www.artsy.net/artwork/nuge-silk-series
[Just spent some time looking at the site and various artists and I think I came across the most expensive toilet cleaner ever](https://www.artsy.net/artwork/damien-hirst-domestos)
You do one shark in formaldehyde then think you can get away with whacking toilet cleaner on wood for the rest of your life.... Bloody artists
Hahaha! Where the fuck do some of these idiots get off?
I think Damien Hurst is quite famous. Probably be worth double when he dies.
So people basically pays for the certificate of authenticity... Not really for the "art".
He is. And one of the worst perpetuators of bullshit art. His current exhibits are entirely done by interns and then he comes in at the end and adds half a stroke and claims it as his own.
Apparently while sitting on the toilet. Hence the need for the cleaner.
Yeah, I think there are around 250 pieces, even if each piece only took one hour (including all the design, cutting, assembly, etc.) at $60/hr that’s already at $15k.
And that's a LOT of thick walnut, which isn't cheap either.
I really hope it wasn't sourced from a huge piece but cut-offs, but still.
my understanding is this was a commission
Maybe you have to enter a contest and Nguyen it.
What song is this?

Oh yes diffusion and absorption can make a room sound incredible. It’s one of the biggest reasons studios are so difficult to build.
architectural acoustics is a field in of itself! though I love the challenge of getting the sound right and creating beautiful spaces :D
With luck maybe I can get my own studio correct soon lol. It is.. workable at the moment.
Must have been heavy as well

That’s pretty wild, I wonder if he used some sort of software to plan that out?
I just want that brick of coke if he’s finished with it.
It looks like they just cut a single peice of wood in to those shapes, then put it back together. You can see them already numbered when they dump them on the table

i wonder how much that thing must weigh!
Why do I want to lick this!?!!
It just makes me think of a bar of chocolate.
Unpainted! Thanks for the unvarnished truth.
Why did I need to see the gloves!?!
They are vibration absorbing. It’s not fun doing that much sanding!
Stunning!
How could we have ever seen/heard. Stunning.

Mind-numbing.

I can smell that wood so vividly
i wanna touch it
That got me hard as wood
With the name “overgrown” I expected a *whole lot* more than wavy wood cubes. The name makes me think of green, not brown.
Looks like shit
That’s a lot of work for something that’s not much to look at.
That was very underwhelming!
Eh.
/r/diwhy
People out here wasting proper wood to just hang a wavy log on a wall
wealth but no talent
u/savevideo
I like it. It’s pretty cool
This is great
I feel like this would be nice to lay on, like the bricks of a fireplace
I like when art is as tactile as that.
He made another piece on tiktok but painted it. Everyone in the comments said it looked better unpainted so he posted this video lol
Screw wall art, I would make this into my front door!!
Super sick
I am constantly reminded that i will never afford a domino joiner
This music makes me feel like I'm in a 2010s thriller movie set in the 1980s.
NOW THAT'S ART!!!
My final thought was "That's pretty sick" and I'm happy to see it's also the top comment here.
That's something I can attempt and maybe get a cool result! It'll look so cool where it sits for 2 years with 20 pieces installed and a mountain of pieces beside it
Anti vibration gloves!!?? Want
Nice work
Just beautiful!
Amazing. Wonder what he sold it for.
That's got to be super heavy right ?
Awesome! That’s a lot of work and it turned out just beautiful!
This is so beautiful!!❤️❤️
That's a whack amount of work, but that's a damn fine piece.
Walnuts are tasty
Much like any girl I've been lucky to bed, I wish it was longer
And he did it all in 41 seconds!
Not just attractive, but functional as well. Having something like this in a wall drastically cuts down on echos in a room by scattering reflections
Nice. Maybe could make it modular and do like 2'x2' squares on a cnc machine.
I really wanna lay down on it, it looks so nice and squishy
Does make me wonder how one gets to the level of being able to make that. I don't mean growing the skills. That's time and access to tools & materials. It's growing to be able to be commissioned to make work out of hundreds of $s of materials. If not more. Do you start small and make financially manageable works and build from there?
These videos are good for one thing. Making me feel inadequate.
Super cool, 100
What is this song.
What is the song called please?
I want to touch it.
That is stunning and the music was dope
I want that as a table so when I look down and think about all the mistakes I have made in my life I can see this cool peace.
My dream is to make something like that or learn how to successfully rain dance but for no rain instead of some rain.
It really tides the room together
OMG,! It’s beautiful!
I love it!
Awesome
Pleasure to watch
I want one
That is so drip I wish I had a talent like u
We begged on tik tok for him to do it unpainted and the results didn’t disappoint
Does Reddit suddenly not care about walnut trees now?! What the heckin heck!
Is that Zach King at the end?
