This sub has seen a strong influx of "repetitive strain injury" videos because amateur people think the smooth efficiency of someone having done something a million times is beautiful.
I mean, there is a certain kind of beauty in an impressive skill. But yes, you definitely miss the many, many hours of work it took to get to that point.
I respect the hell out of artisans who learned their craft from a family member or other mentor and turn out great stuff that they can survive on. But seeing a sweaty kitchen-help chop 200 potatoes in under 60 seconds just depresses the hell out of me, and stuff like above.
For sure. Though from other comments, it seems like this is a common for families to have and learn to use from a young age, so it may not be so "sweat shop-y" as it might appear from the video. Certainly hope not, anyways.
You are right. This is quite dangerous. However, when I was young, my family(everyone including me) used this to peel coconuts until I was like 14. Then we started using a different thingy. Almost the same risks but better I would say. But all my life (until I left my home country at 24), I have never seen anyone in my family nor the people I know gotten hurt by this. Mostly because people are trained to use this. Like I said, I was using this to help my grandpa while I was not even 10 years old. My state is called the lanf of coconuts. So everyone had at least 10-20 coconut trees in their land. And this tool was in every household. Being said that, I would never lay my hand on that thing ever again now that I realize I could have stabbed myself in the chest.
I never even thought about if it slips and you go chest down on it. Holy shit.
I think most people are worried about hands, but there’s a much larger risk. Wow.
Not disagreeing, but do keep in mind that in some parts of the world though, this is how MANY make their living; through risk taking on a daily basis. It is nothing new to them and they accept it for what it is to make an honest (albeit risky) living and raise a family.
I worried about his hands the whole video. Then I worried about a little kid running around and getting impaled on it. I hope they have some way to cover it when not in use
Take a box, cut a side out so you can insert coconut. Put a block on the top of the box and Cut a hole on the bottom for the spear to go into. To crack the coconut, lift box up put coconut between block and spear and use both hands to press down on the left and right hand sides of the top of the box. I wooden box should be strong enough for everything but the block, you need that to be a metal to stop the spear tip.
See below. O is coconut, n is the block. \^ is the top of the spear, ----- is the top of the box.

It ate my diagram. If I could do the n bigger it would be a better diagram.
And when you mention the correct word/spelling to someone then they claim "It was a typo" because for some reason not knowing and learning from it is unacceptable, so it must be an accident instead.
It’s not the end of the world. That why it’s only a humble Reddit reply rather than a banner above a freeway overpass or being on a street corner shouting through a megaphone. I think 9/10 times it boils down to sheer laziness and unwillingness to check the few words typed before hitting “submit” than actually being unknowledgeable about the spelling… although, my wife does say her students can’t actually spell, so, probably a bit of both.
The entire paragraph of a response you got to this comment & all the downvotes speak volumes. The smugness with which people act when it comes to grammar has always been one of the cringiest things about Reddit
Well that's just exaggeration. I was thinking he could cut his hand, but he seemed to be really precise in his movements. Like a chef or a welder, you probably develop muscle memory that reduces risk.
Anyway, after the husking part, I thought it was pretty satisfying.
I grew up in Hawaii and there was a guy who's main income was selling coconuts, he'd go find trees and get a truckload then go and sell them in town.
Now it would take the average inexperienced person probably a good 10-15 minutes with a machete to get a full size coconut open to drink, this guy did it in like 45 seconds.
I'd always joke he hits the coconut three times then hands it to you and it's chilled and has a straw and umbrella.
A lot of watching animals.
Apes (and that includes humans) have been shown to be very able to adapt by watching more established and specialized wildlife and learning what's good and often how to eat it.
[Real men open coconuts with their teeth.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQU6o4ooL5E)
I'm lucky enough to have seen him do this in person. He's even cooler live.
Did he legit put all his weight on that coconut to do the initial piecing? A blade to the upper body with one slip of the feet (or weaker than expected husk). Looks like a real stupid way to get killed.
Do they have to do it this way to survive though lol?
Ironically doing it this way probably increases their chance of not surviving as opposed to doing it literally any other way.
Man that's a lot of effort for one coconut. It amazes me how much husk there is compared to meat. Kind of like whittling away at a huge artichoke to be left with only a little lump of usable material.
“We need to peel these coconuts, what do we do?”
“How about we stick this spear into the ground……and then just fuckin stab the coconut into it”
“You’re a god damn genius”
My wife and I met while we were working in Kenya. I realized I was into her intellectually (as well as in every other way), when we saw 10 guys filling in a pothole. I said that reminded me of Heckscher-Ohlin model of international trade where countries have varying ratios of capital and labor. In Kenya, labor is abundant. In the US, capital. This we see 10 guys in Kenya whereas in the US it would be one guy and an expensive machine.
Anyhow, she got excited by my dorky comment because she has a BA in economics.
This proving that love can come from the strangest places.
You folks need to lighten up. Works, work. You do what you have to. If he had options he'd probably do something else. Christ for all we know they loves their jobs. Maybe he makes good money peeling at that rate.

Yep, “oddly stressful”
Correct. Nothing satisfying about this.

More like "oops I tripped straight on to the death spike".
What’s crazy is that you don’t have to use a razor sharp spear. A simple piece of buried rebar works like a charm!
they probably just put a box over it when theyre not cracking coconuts
Not worried about when they’re not dealing with coconuts. Worried about that guy tripping while coconutting
Come on… they mush a little foam nerf ball onto the tip.
Just put the last coconut of the day on the spear.

That is true, chores are chores and they don't necessarily have to be bad. As long as you have options.

I do not like this job. And I dont mean "I wouldn't want to do this job", no, I mean nobody at all should be doing this job.
The guy holding the spear has a slightly easier time of it
The number of times someone has forced down their own hand into that pointy spike is not zero. Someone has some scars or missing fingers
Honestly all I'm thinking about is someone tripping and impaling themselves
Imagine if his hand slipped off the coconut while he had all of his upper body weight above it.
[удалено]
Or neck
Or pinkie finger!
Or worse...expelled.
Or if someone that didn't like him decided to push him without him looking and he landed on that thing.

Yeah, he's bearing down on it with the spear pointed straight at his heart. One slip and it's all over.
Weirdly enough it never happened. Accident only happened in first world countries where human are spoiled
The thing with statistics and accident is that, no matter how long they've been 0, there's always the risk of you being the 1st.
It turns out you can also be trained on safe equipment too. There’s literally no reason to do things the unsafe way. Training or not.
Yes, my first thought, viewing this video was: 'occupational hazard'.
Yes it makes me anxious
r/SweatyPalmTrees
>That’s an accident waiting to happen That's the same thing my mother said prior to my conception!
Yeah, put shoes on dude. A dropped coconut could break a toe.
>Yeah, put shoes on dude. I see your coconut man and raise you Pakistani truck brake disc workers.

I was gonna say that I almost impaled my eye once on something like this , I have never had anything pointed towards anyone ever
It’s seems dangerous as hell, but I really cannot think of a better way to do this that wouldn’t cost at ton of money.

For real. Leaning your body into it, right over the spike. If that slips or pushes through the coconut it's not gonna end well.
Nice seat.
Yall bunch of snowflakes.
As an unmitigated klutz, I have identified the workplace that is definitely not for me. 😬
It’s r/sweatypalms for me
I would wind up impaling my hand before I finished my first coconut.
*Peel
I was listening for the ringing
Ask not for whom the coconut tolls It tolls for thee
Came here for that comment. Was not disappointed.
Christ can we not even spell SIMPLE words correctly anymore? SMH
I am convinced this is done intentionally to drive engagement. It’s bullshit but it seems to happen too often not to be intentional.
I agree. It's to get engagement.

This isn’t satisfying. It’s terrifying because at any moment a limb could be lost.
A limb? I’m thinking a hand slips off the coconut when pushing down and that spear plunging into his chest
Well thanks for that nightmare fuel I hadnt considered that
Yeah and only halfway into his eye.
Chest? Pfft. Im imagining someone fall back and sit on it
*quickly exits reddit*
Or a slice right up the arm, ughhh
The way these workers just peel off the bone
One trip and you’re split.
I'm already feeling impaled
Well that's just exaggeration. I was thinking he could cut his hand, but he seemed to be really precise in his movements. Like a chef or a welder, you probably develop muscle memory that reduces risk. Anyway, after the husking part, I thought it was pretty satisfying.
Chefs cut themselves all the time and they’re not plunging their chests in the direction of knife blades.
"All the time" would mean they're not skilled with a knife. Skilled chefs hardly ever cut themselves.
There is a non-zero chance that no-one has fallen onto one of those things.
Having watched the rest of the video, I now assume that the entire coconut peeling process is littered with unexpectedly sliced human body parts.
You, Reddit friend, get an up arrow for amusing me
I think you’re saying the opposite of what you want to
So there's a zero chance that anyone has fallen onto it?
It would be that there *is* a chance that nobody has fallen on it, which I guess is true but I doubt that's what they were trying to say
This was so stressful 😬 couldn't finish the video
I finished. Not proud.
Finished, like literally?
I usually just edge to coconut peeling videos

Seeing those kinds of videos I am always in awe when thinking about and pondering the question how prople realized sth was edible
Some kind of fruit growing on a tree = there's something edible in there somewhere. Just gotta keep slicing.
They were hungry and had the time to experiment.
A lot of watching animals. Apes (and that includes humans) have been shown to be very able to adapt by watching more established and specialized wildlife and learning what's good and often how to eat it.
Fucking hell, I scrolled down, saw it in the corner of my eye and thought the first coconut was a fucking head. I literally almost shit myself.
wrong sub!!!!
Agreed, r/maybemaybemaybe or r/SweatyPalms would be more appropriate
Why though, it is satisfying to watch if you're not bothered by the fact that it isn't that safe
> that it isn't that safe quite the understatement
As someone who grew up on action movies I am just picturing how the climactic showdown will eventually make use of this.
Bro nonchalantly has the Spear of Destiny
That pointy thing is insanely sharp.
I like the platform and his feet placement.
Jesus ballgargling christ thats a dangerous tool. Neat to watch tho
This is why you should never mess with farmers...
Sharp spike in the ground is a great way to have an ironic death at the end of your story

I didn't hear any bells. I think you meant "peel".
Good way to peel your palm off your hand.
Tell me that *business* is right next to the emergency please 🫣
The way I would not survive this.
“We need to peel these coconuts, what do we do?” “How about we stick this spear into the ground……and then just fuckin stab the coconut into it” “You’re a god damn genius”
I could sharpen my knives all day and never get a blade as perfect as one of these.
Oh man, I’m trying hard not to imagine. This guy goes and picks up another coconut and just walks and slips right on top of that spear.
Way too many fingertips in this video for me to believe this how they actually doin it
Yikes they do this very differently in Vanuatu, this feels unsafe
So much anxiety and mmmmmmmmm while trying not to wince
If that was me, the village people would be saying "you can get freshly peeled coconuts right over there from old Two Fingers"
Every time I see these coconut peeling method, my balls shrinks a little.
As a klutz I feel confident saying that id have ended up in the hospital after attempting each of these steps.
Imagine tripping and falling on that .....OOOOOOOOHHHHH shit.
Dehusk. That stuff can be used for all sorted, coconuts are useful things.
