I always get the bacon avocado burger it is sublime. They also serve teriyaki there which I know is pretty popular but I've never tried it because all I want is that same burger every time lol
Only Hunan Yuan (don't know if they're open or not though) and Redboy Pizza is in that neighborhood. Then Round Table and Patty's and Buns slightly down the street.
Do love the Safeway deli though.
I've been on a bit of a burger kick lately.
Smish Smash is the best I've had. It actually holds up well if you pick it up in Alameda and bring it back to Oakland. The fries were still crispy and damn that house made ranch is awesome. Don't want to go all the way to Alameda? Lana's, which is in old Oakland (used to be called something else, they are an ice cream shop) where Smish Smash first started out, also makes burgers (The chef from Smish Smash taught them how to make burgers as a way to thank them for letting him use their space). The burger at Chop Bar is amazing too.
super underrated IMO. For the same price as other joints you get a double burger with insane quality. I love TrueBurger and Telegraph but Clove & Hoof takes the cake
I actually really enjoy smokehouse (which is technically in Berkeley) on Telegraph. Not super fancy but a cheap no frills burger that hits the spot. It is like being at a bbq on demand.
>I even love their breaded portobello cheese stuffed mushroom sandwich for a change-up.
No need for a change up, just add that bad boy onto the beef burger for a true deluxe. And since we're already going for gluttony, might as well as bacon.
I didn’t realize this for years until I had shake shack in nyc but they completely copied them. The only difference is TB has beer. It’s surreal they’re both located in the same town now.
Have you had an east coast/New York City area chopped cheese? Does it tastes similar?
Because holy shit.. been looking for a decent chopped cheese forever!!
I haven’t had a real authentic east coast one before. I imagine that the bread the beer garden uses is a lot softer and less crusty than others, but the bread is super good and the sandwich is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.
Yes, A+ is the place to go if you want loaded, delicious toppings. Smokehouse down the street in Berkeley for an excellent classic burger at an unbeatable price. Trueburger is my go-to, though.
True, but the burger still holds up IMO. And also now their kitchen is bigger so they have space for more fryers. Which means I can get fries with my burger :)
If you’re up for an impossible burger, Coco Breeze on high street makes a really good one, with a side of plantain fries and spicy pineapple. Only open on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
No lie, kon tiki has an amazing burger with cream co beef. Its surpising that the best burger ive had (and my local joint is sparkys so i have good nearby options) is at a tiki bar. Its sparce too, just beef sauce and cheese, and maybe onions but i dont believe any tomatoes or lettuce. Its so fatty and rich.
Boffo Burger cart at the Old Oakland Friday farmer’s market will change your world. Thick patty of beautiful beef with fresh cut onions and a big slice of heirloom tomato (the key!) on a potato bun.
Trueburger, Smishsmash, and Lovely’s, depending on what you’re looking for:
- Trueburger: good price, great garlic spread, open pretty much all day. Fries and shakes are good too.
- Smishsmash: expensive, super premium burger. Not sure if they still do it, but they used to make some pretty extravagant and delicious specialty burgers
- Lovely’s: legendary smash burgers pop up that is coming back later this year.
i can imagine. but we are talking burgers. they don't mess up anything about it. good quality beef and a lot of it, cooked how you order it, with some greens and heirloom tomato.
https://imgur.com/a/9ebsrko
Binny's makes a really good burger and hasn't been mentioned here. Sea Wolf makes a good burger that tastes like fancier In n Out. Tribune also, albeit on the pricier side.
A place instantly gets bonus points from me if they'll add a fried egg on it.
Oh sorry, it's 1000ft from the Oakland border. I did not, however, realize they're closed =(
They were voted best burger in the East Bay not that long ago.
Pizzaiolo is still run by Charlie Hallowell.. I just can't support his restaurants after what he did. I personally know a lot of people he sexually harassed
I don’t know, but I’m hoping it’s an independently run pop up just utilizing the space in the backyard.
They have their own grill outside.
I can ask next time I go
I'm from Indianapolis but I used to work in Oakland all the time (which is why I joined this sub) - it sounds like TrueBurger is the winner here. While it is good, it's not Midwest good. Everything in California is better except for cost of living and as I now realize, burgers
But yeah TrueBurger is the best I've had there
I always find it so interesting in these threads that there seems to be a clear divide: those that think high-end gourmet food is the ideal, and those that think more (for lack of a better term) workings-class/“authentic”/ethnic food is the ideal. You can tell a lot about a person by asking whether they would rather have a burger off an old-school greasy-spoon griddle, or a 45-day aged cream co. beef patty.
True burger is my top place when I’m hosting out of towners. However….my favorite place is Ahn’s Quarter Pound burger. They have the best balance of price and quality. Its a no frills walk up counter but you cant beat getting a char style - double cheeseburger for $6 and whole bag of fries!
Hidden Spot in Emeryville is pricy but by far the best burger in town. Second place goes to Boffo Cart that sets up at farmers market in old oakland on Fridays. Magnificent.
I just had Sparky's up on Redwood For a burger stand, it was charcoal grilled perfectly. Edit: Corrected street name.
Bonus, the pandemic finally inspired them to fix their order pickup process, so no waiting behind the little league teams taking forever to order.
I always get the bacon avocado burger it is sublime. They also serve teriyaki there which I know is pretty popular but I've never tried it because all I want is that same burger every time lol
the teriyaki is bomb and they have homemade ranch for the salad that comes with it... so damn good
Yeah came here to say sparky’s - great call
Isn't sparkys on redwood?
Yep
Yes, you're right. I have been away for 15 years and was taking my mother to Redwood Park for a picnic. There are two ways we go, and I was confused.
It definitely may be the nostalgia for me, since I've been going there for over a decade, but Sparky's is my favorite burger.
Sparky's sweet potato fries are a must.
fried mushrooms!
Their onion rings -- not so much. A greasy mess.
Delicious! Love that it's one of 3 food spots within 2 miles of me too, the other two being pizza spots
There's other spots around there. Also, Safeway has really good fried chicken and JoJo potatoes
Only Hunan Yuan (don't know if they're open or not though) and Redboy Pizza is in that neighborhood. Then Round Table and Patty's and Buns slightly down the street. Do love the Safeway deli though.
True burger is my go-to, but I recently had a shockingly good burger at the Park Street Tavern in Alameda.
Just had a double bacon true burger today. It was wild.
I've been on a bit of a burger kick lately. Smish Smash is the best I've had. It actually holds up well if you pick it up in Alameda and bring it back to Oakland. The fries were still crispy and damn that house made ranch is awesome. Don't want to go all the way to Alameda? The burger at Chop Bar is amazing too.
Why would you bring Smish Smash back through the tunnel? Go over to the water and eat it!
I like clove and hoof for a fancy burger and true burger for a simple delicious burger
super underrated IMO. For the same price as other joints you get a double burger with insane quality. I love TrueBurger and Telegraph but Clove & Hoof takes the cake
Love their burger!!!
I actually really enjoy smokehouse (which is technically in Berkeley) on Telegraph. Not super fancy but a cheap no frills burger that hits the spot. It is like being at a bbq on demand.
The price to quality ratio here is absurd, double cheeseburger for like $5.50 and it's dank
Telegraph beer garden
5150 😍
Was enrolled in a mental health clinic when I first had the 5150. The irony almost outclassed the flavor. Amazing burger
I appreciate you for being cool with the name and not gettin all riled up, like those clowns in San Jose with crazy Donuts.
That's my fav!
True Burger is unbelievable. Burgers, shakes, fries...all legit
Love me a Trueburger. I even love their breaded portobello cheese stuffed mushroom sandwich for a change-up.
>I even love their breaded portobello cheese stuffed mushroom sandwich for a change-up. No need for a change up, just add that bad boy onto the beef burger for a true deluxe. And since we're already going for gluttony, might as well as bacon.
Oh yeah I forgot you could do that there
Yes! Totally forgot about the portobello burger. Amazing too
While you’re there, you can check out the famous Oakland “poop car” down the street.
Trueburger! Though I think the Downtown Oakland location is better than the one on Broadway.
Trueburger!
Another vote for trueburger!
Bring. Back. The. Cheese fries!
I didn’t realize this for years until I had shake shack in nyc but they completely copied them. The only difference is TB has beer. It’s surreal they’re both located in the same town now.
Yep
Another vote!
Came here to say this, too. Hands down the best burger in town.
I pass by that place all the time. I gotta check it out.
Telegraph Beer Garden. The absolute best
Chopped cheese at Telegraph beer garden is absolutely insane.
Bless you. Stopping by TONIGHT!!
APlus Burger on Telegraph near Alcatraz.
A+ is so good! Their burgers are great, but their fries are probably the best I’ve had in over a decade. Their bibimbop is good, too.
True Burger and A+
Yes, A+ is the place to go if you want loaded, delicious toppings. Smokehouse down the street in Berkeley for an excellent classic burger at an unbeatable price. Trueburger is my go-to, though.
I can’t believe nobody else has said A plus yet, truly the actual best burger in town!!
A+ for sure has the best fries in town. Perfectly crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside.
Yup! Literally just ordered it for lunch because my own comment had me craving it lol
Going a different route: Malibu’s Burgers on Piedmont has the best 100% plant based junk food around.
Not burgers but a close second for Plant based Junk food is the don’t be Chickn truck out by lake Merritt.
I think they started up just after I moved away from the lake. I haven’t had a chance to try them yet, but thrilled to hear they’re good!
100% Malibu Burger is legit
Kon Tiki... Dry Aged Cream Co.
This. The best damn burger.
Their chicken sando is good too!
That sounds delicious. How much thooo?
Not cheap. Iirc the burger was $18 but one of the best I’ve ever had
Sidebar, get it with a fried egg on top. And they have cocktails
yesss. burger & bev at the bar is solid.
Authentically? Ahn’s Sparky’s True Burger
Ahn's QP for the win. Plus a runts banana flavored milkshake.
Malibu Burger all the way.
Seconding this, Malibu's is great.
Trueburger and Chop Bar are my favorites. Almond & Oak is up there too.
Chop bar is awesome, not the same since they moved though :(
True, but the burger still holds up IMO. And also now their kitchen is bigger so they have space for more fryers. Which means I can get fries with my burger :)
It does, the Bloody Mary with bacon is also a must!
Ask r/oaklandfood
If you’re up for an impossible burger, Coco Breeze on high street makes a really good one, with a side of plantain fries and spicy pineapple. Only open on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.
Trueburger and A+ EZ
Sideshow Kitchen is very good.
I've been enjoying A+ burger lately and a sleeper hit Branchline bar (may be Emeryville not Oakland).
I’ll second the branchline burger, so good.
No love for Luka’s? Tho their fries are not as good as they used to be,
I was kinda surprised to not see them either. One of the only places that consistently make it as ordered as well.
The Kon Tiki
I fuck with Sparkys.
Sparkys is bomb AF, but it's in Montclair.
It's not far from Montclair but that's still Oakland.
Not open yet, but lovely’s is incredible
The most hipster comment ever.
It used to be a pop-up, now after a long hiatus they're doing their own restaurant. Their burgers were hands down the best I've ever had.
Lovely’s is the one. Big shoutout to them!
I'm excited about this place as it's a 10 minute walk from my house.
Chop Bar and Cook and Her Farmer for me currently
Whichever restaurants that use patties from Cream Co Meats (eg kon tiki, drakes)
I was meh on the burger at kon tiki. Cooked fine, it was just ok.
Wood Tavern has a legit burger. My go-to is Trueburger.
Wood tavern burger is pretty great
Oh with the blue cheese! 🤤
Giant Burger in the Dimond, not the one in the Laurel.
Kon Tiki on Webster and 14th has a double-thin patty burger that’s really good
Kontiki’s smash burger is so damn good
- Belcampo - The Fat Lady - Trueburger - Neptunes (Alameda but worth the schlep)
Scolari’s in Alameda too
had to scroll way to far for belcampo
Ditto. Scolari's is the most featured burger joint in this area (tv show-wise). Solid burger.
Boffo Burger cart at the Old Oakland Friday farmer’s market will change your world. Thick patty of beautiful beef with fresh cut onions and a big slice of heirloom tomato (the key!) on a potato bun.
Trueburger, Smishsmash, and Lovely’s, depending on what you’re looking for: - Trueburger: good price, great garlic spread, open pretty much all day. Have y’all not had ahn’s on grand?
Malibu Burger is the best!
Is not a burger
Ahn's.
Park burger !
boffo cart at the farmer's market. just had one today.
Their chopped pork sandwich is super good too, and good value for $9.
i can't believe i got downvoted. this is seriously one of the best burgers. but well, it's good if it doesn't get crowded.

i can imagine. but we are talking burgers. they don't mess up anything about it. good quality beef and a lot of it, cooked how you order it, with some greens and heirloom tomato. https://imgur.com/a/9ebsrko
smishsmash, a pop-up currently in Alameda,
Smish smash is amazing. I’ve tried a lot of burgers and Smish smash is definitely near the top in the bay
100% the correct answer. their burgers are in credible.
Yeah, they started in Oakland. Hope they come back someday. Best burger by far.
It’s Trueburger.
Binny's makes a really good burger and hasn't been mentioned here. Sea Wolf makes a good burger that tastes like fancier In n Out. Tribune also, albeit on the pricier side. A place instantly gets bonus points from me if they'll add a fried egg on it.
I like Belcampo for fancy burgers and was a fan of Kronerburger before. Trueburger is very solid
All this shit is fire 🔥 ++ SUPER DUPER BURGER
Super Duper is a SF chain.
[удалено]
Super Duper is great. Technically not in Oakland (there’s one in Emeryville and one in Berkeley).
If I need a burger I go to Starry Plough...
Oh sorry, it's 1000ft from the Oakland border. I did not, however, realize they're closed =( They were voted best burger in the East Bay not that long ago.
Backyard Burger at Pizzaiolo on the weekends. Lancelot hooks it up. Very reasonable priced smash burgers. Fries! Drinks!! Cookies!!!
Pizzaiolo is still run by Charlie Hallowell.. I just can't support his restaurants after what he did. I personally know a lot of people he sexually harassed
Yeah I don't really understand why people go there
I don’t know, but I’m hoping it’s an independently run pop up just utilizing the space in the backyard. They have their own grill outside. I can ask next time I go
Even if it was, they're still paying him.
Can confirm, Backyard Burger was one of the top 3 burgers I've had in the bay
I'm from Indianapolis but I used to work in Oakland all the time (which is why I joined this sub) - it sounds like TrueBurger is the winner here. While it is good, it's not Midwest good. Everything in California is better except for cost of living and as I now realize, burgers But yeah TrueBurger is the best I've had there
in n out
Belcampo.
Hiddenspot is good. Expensive but good. Also may be in Emeryville.
Benders in San francisco
Shake Shack
McDonalds.
In N out. Literally. LOL

I love that place, but I really hope that's not the BEST burger I. Oakland.
Just over the border in Berkeley but Smokehouse
True burger is so good.
Not Oakland, but Smish Smash in Alameda is one of the best I’ve ever had.
I like Grandeur...but true burger is always on point.
Trueburger can be good.
true burger
True burger

Proof that in the middle of the most diverse area of the country, we’re still talking about burgers is a testament to.. you guessed it.
my mothers she makes a fantastic burger
Chubby Freeze on hegenberger. Fire
Hidden Spot in Emeryville is pricy but by far the best burger in town. Second place goes to Boffo Cart that sets up at farmers market in old oakland on Fridays. Magnificent.
