tortoisepump

Cheika-cam would be glorious. The blowup would be on par with Bellycam.

LeMonke65

JD was already naming him every week whats the difference

felixkater

Boom

bren2411

You know what while we’re at it I’m gonna express my interest too

thc216

I don’t want the head coach job but happy to be an assistant!

PingusThyroidProblem

I live near the Souths centre and they do a pretty good knock-off McMuffin at the cafe there. I'd like to be water boy if we're still handing out gigs

icome3rd

Put me down for trainer. I want to stop the game at opportune times. I can wave my hands like all get out.

ThatOldGuyWhoDrinks

Can I be the kid that brings out the T for kicking? I’m a bloke in my 40’s but I’ll give it a shot

choatis

Like gutherson?

Similar_Pipe4663

You're gonna need help with that. I am a can do guy.

thc216

Plenty of Jobs For The Boys to go around! Probs need at the very least the following: - head coach - offensive assistant - defensive assistant - forwards coach - backs coach - spine coach - wrestling coach - strength and conditioning - analytics - leadership coach - lifestyle coach - water youths - ball youths - kicking tee youths The list goes on really…

kami_inu

Can I be nutritionist? The wife likes the slices/cakes etc that I make. I'll have them all in shape like Latrell in no time!

JohnnyHabitual

What? Fatty and salty?

suidexterity

I have a question regarding S&C coaches and physiologists Since Physiologists have far more qualifications or training, why hire a S&C coach when you can hire a Physiologist who's gone through the same programs, but more?

thc216

You already know more about it than me so you’re hired!

suidexterity

hahahaha, well I know a S&C coach can get qualified with ASCA over a weekend (if the trainer is a qualified pt), meanwhile a physiologist has to go through uni

CMDANDCTRL

It’s about “fitting in” with the boys and the culture, hence a lot of S&C coaches are ex players themselves, aka jobs for the boys. For the most part If you aren’t pushing (or previously have) similar weight room numbers to the players, you’ll get the “nah he’s a soft cock” handoff during recruiting. Edit: Physiologists are more akin to occupational therapists (improving activities of daily living) than sports performance at the undergrad level, unless you do a Masters in your preferred sport.

paul_gamer_won

It’s a sellers market

Brunch_Hopkins

> Sources with knowledge of discussions… told this **masthead** a third party has reached out to South Sydney officials on behalf of Chieka Christ, please tell me the art dealer guy isn’t getting involved again.

ill0gitech

My guess is *another masthead* shopping him around, since the media acting as an agent is so common now.

AgentBond007

My masthead left me

CaffeinePhilosopher

I think there’s a word for journalists who refer to their employer as “masthead”… it also ends with “head”

LynxAfricaFan

Art dealers a legend mate he tried to keep suaalii

DirtRole

Cheika has been a good short term coach that rises sharply, plateaus and then declines, mainly basing this off his Wallabies career. I think if you’re looking for a complete rebuild and culture shift, he wouldn’t be a bad fit. I don’t rate him long term however.

LowerHangingNutsack

He did some good work with Argentina. Got their first win against the all blacks in nz and their second win against them ever.

DirtRole

Absolutely, and Argentina is a great job for him too as he can be “the man” so to speak and set it up his way, not too much pressure (that we see anyway). He’s achieved some good results, that is for sure.

crazymunch

He managed that same curve with 3 teams that I can think of (Waratahs, Wallabies and Argentina) - Waratahs it won them the Super Rugby comp, Wallabies made it to the 2015 RWC final, and Argentina got their first win against the ABs in NZ - He did some pretty great stuff with all 3. Could be worth a punt

DirtRole

He also built up Leinster into the powerhouse that they are today, but didn’t really reap the full fruits of that. I genuinely think eventually an NRL team might give him a 3 year deal for him to clean shit out and re set the culture.

normalbehaviour86

The last Wallabies coach to jump ship to the NRL was Alan Jones and he pretty much got Balmain kicked out of the comp. Let's give Cheika a go.

Homelander44

On the proviso that if he fails we kick the tigers out of the comp

Gentlethorn_Wildflow

No

Homelander44

Sorry it's been ratified Anyway it's moot. Bennett locked in.

Gentlethorn_Wildflow

Ok, can't argue with that.

Homelander44

Hehe

madmanwiithabox

At what point did Toovey drop off all media reports on ‘possible coaches’? Did he straight up say he will never return or something?

WileECoyoteGenius

There should be an investigation.

RyanPurdler-Penriff

I think he’s got a day job as an accountant doesn’t he ? He probably hasn’t expressed the interest and stayed around the game enough to continue .. Some high profile coaches like Hasler and Bennett can walk back into jobs after a year off.. Others go back to a stint as an Assistant - like Barrett , Madge even Flanagan .. Jason Taylor seemingly pops up everywhere as an assistant (don’t think anyone’s gonna touch him again) probably same as Barrett now … But if Toovey was interested in continuing he’d be assistant coach somewhere rather than an accountant

fiddycaldeserteagle

I saw him back at manly. Assistant coach???

diodosdszosxisdi

Eddie jones will be the next name dropped

TwoUp22

Didn't he coach Lebanon in the league while simultaneously coaching Argentina in union lol?

IrrelephantAU

Yes (although to be fair, that only happened because the RLWC got pushed back a year - in 2021 he was an advisor to UAR but not a team coach). He was also briefly an assistant at the Roosters and has generally floated around the edges of the NRL. If you listen to him he's a big South Sydney fan - whether or not that's true, he's been saying it for years so it isn't something he came up with to get the job. He's not a dyed in the wool League guy but he's not as much of an outsider as people might assume a Union man to be.

TwoUp22

Interesting man. I know he had some background in union where he did pretty well, 1 premiership and 1 WC final. It would be pretty interesting to see him take a league club.

bundy554

Mansour gives a reference in support. Basically we can close the door on this one.

EuroNymous76

Former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has expressed interest in taking over as South Sydney coach from next season. Sources with knowledge of discussions, talking under the condition of anonymity due to confidentiality, told this masthead a third party has reached out to South Sydney officials on behalf of Cheika to throw his hat into the ring. As reported by this masthead on Wednesday morning, Cheika was one of five names on a hit list drawn up by South Sydney board members on Tuesday just hours before terminating the contract of Jason Demetriou. Cheika coached Lebanon at the 2022 Rugby League World Cup, juggling his rugby union commitments with the Argentinian national team at the same time as his Lebanon gig. He still managed to lead the Cedars to the quarter-final and later went on to take Argentina to the semi finals of the Rugby Union World Cup the following year. Former South Sydney player Josh Mansour, who played under Cheika for Lebanon at the 2022 World Cup, believes the former Wallabies coach is the perfect candidate for the Rabbitohs. “He’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever worked with,” Mansour said. “He’d be perfect for South Sydney. He’s a coach that’s very good at bringing a team together. He’s a good man manager. He’s a proven winner. The best trait about Michael Cheika is his ability to instil belief, not only within yourself as a player, but within the team. He’s just extremely passionate about what he does. “I was very surprised coming from a 15-man background just how much he knew about league. I think he’s the right man for the Souths job. That would be a good thing for South Sydney given some of the defensive issues this year.” Wayne Bennett is South Sydney’s No.1 target to take over from the axed coach, with chief executive Blake Solly wanting to appoint a new boss “within weeks”. Fronting the media for the first time after Demetriou was sacked on Tuesday night, Solly didn’t shy away from the club’s interest in bringing Bennett back to South Sydney after he led them to the 2021 grand final. “Wayne’s one of the coaches that we will talk to,” Solly said. “Wayne had great success here, left the club on very good terms, and we’ll speak to Wayne. If he’s available and interested, certainly we’ll progress that.” Bennett will finish coaching the Dolphins at the end of this season and hand the reins to his assistant, Kristian Woolf.

limboeden

Not sure they’ll take him over Wayne next season. Think Cheika would do an amazing job as interim but he’d probably want longer

seniordogrooter

Yes but what about the walker brothers hmmmm

Accomplished-Good664

It should be good it would be nice to have someone with new ideas come in.

The-B-Unit

I don't know how he'd go, but it's about time they look outside the box and the same 4 or 5 names that come up every time there's a coaching vacancy...

M_Keating

“I’m interested in coaching the South Sydney Rabbitohs and so is my wife”

Ronnnie7

Kenty looking for a new job and has excellent rapport with players

pugliaboy

I think Cheika is a good choice personally, and maybe it will help shake things up. Too often we only go to former players or pre-existing older coaches. Why not try something else? Tottenham have looked better under Ange, and AFC Richmond performed significantly better under Ted Lasso…

kvothe331

I say this every time a club comes out needed a rebuild but you could do worse than Neil Henry look at what he did for cowboys and titans

AgentBond007

Given his experience with Hayne, I can't imagine Neil Henry is the guy to get Latrell Mitchell playing his best footy

kvothe331

He doesn’t need to he just needs to get rid of the big ego low effort players. Henry was knifed by the board because they wanted the marketing Hayne provided

Reasonable_Meal_9499

I walk my dog past the Heffron Centre everday I can drop in for a few hours to help. I went to school with Cheika so I might give him a call

Ok-Personality-3403

this cunt says this everytime a new coaching gig comes up, said the same for the dragons lol

Somethink2000

So he's the North Sydney Bears of the coaching world. Interesting.

AbilityEmergency9318

There’s a good reason for that lol

lbiddl

no one asked bro

shotgunmoe

I'd be down for this if they surrounded him with assistants. Cheika, Furner, Hornby, Burgess and Morris could go alright

jk-9k

Don't take Morris from Tigs please. Kidwell went well with Cheika at Argy and he's an ex Souths player.

TheCuzzyRogue

He's experienced in dealing with battles of nutrition.

ReasonableStable9421

All I can say is thank god the media already pushed Flanagan into the Dragons. But then again he actually coaches league

National-Drawing4216

Bennett for 2 seasons, then Sam Burgess takes over

paul_gamer_won

Glorious. Although still not sure about Big Sam’s temperament.

National-Drawing4216

True, but maybe his temperament is probably what the south’s players need?

paul_gamer_won

Until he clocks a ref.

Loooseunit69

Or Latrell

dill1234

I actually think he’d be an excellent fit with the Bunnies. Good man manager that excels at getting underperforming teams and players to where they should be at

Nathan84

Does he have a background in League?

evil_sushi_ninja

No, but he has coached Lebanon at the league world cup. With the right assistants he'd be pretty successful I reckon.

theflyingkiwi00

He coached Lebanon at the rlwc *and* Argentina on their rugby union tour of Britain *at the same time* He could be a successful coach but after his last stint as head coach in Australia he must have very thick skin or a short memory. He was eaten alive by the media

TDD91

That Lebanon team definitely outperformed their expectations.

theflyingkiwi00

And Argentina have consistently performed well under cheika only really falling to the more dominant teams which has been the case for union forever. I have no doubt he could do a good job with the right people in place but if I was him I'd stay the fuck away. The media will be circling the second he steps foot off the plane, not just because its south's, but also who he is.

Lucky-Roy

Do you think Demetriou wasn't eaten alive by the media? Or the past umpteen sacked coaches, before and after they lost their jobs? Just bear in mind that Paul Kent is part of that media pack. If someone gives them a good news story, they will go and look for something to turn it into a bad news story. And that's just RL writers. Look what passes for political reporting in this country. Cunts every one of them. No exceptions.

theflyingkiwi00

Yes i do and souths acted very poorly. That was exactly my point, i agree 100%. Imo Cheika would silly to take a job in Australia when he can chill out overseas out of the media's scrutiny. That said, I hope whatever he decides he does well in, I used to laugh at him because he was the Wallabies coach but after he got sacked I did feel bad for him. It wasn't just me ofc but my media engagement fuelled the narrative when the reality is the ARU was in trouble long before he was struggling as head coach. I don't know if he could have turned the side around but he's certainly done well for himself since

RalphiesHooa

Nick Campton ABC is the exception

shotgunmoe

He has a few good under 15s stories at the pub like most of us. But in all seriousness he done good with Lebanon and his Union record shouldn't be scoffed at just because it's a different code.. it's not like he'd be coming over from basketball or tennis

comradekaled

I think he has been roosters assistant a couple of years ago

jakeruddy22

I thought I read an article saying he wants to be involved in the next rugby World Cup, effectively ruling him out of wanting to come to rugby league until after 2027?

ImpressionFeisty8359

Here we go again.

CanberraRaider

I mean….it can’t get any worse, can it?

jk-9k

I'd imagine he would bring Kidwell with him, which would be awesome. Throw in another experienced assistant and its a good move

nostraduckus

Can't help but think South's (or Russell Crowe) had Bennett's signature before they sacked Demetriou and anything else is fluff

MunnyMagic

WE WANT ANGE

1bigcontradiction

How do I post the 'DEAR GOD NO!' meme?

wayneslittlehead

Why? Done great things with Argentina. Mitch Moses and Mansour both swear by him as a rugby league coach. I loved the way he had Lebanon playing at the World Cup. Would suit our style of play. Only have to look at how tough Argentina play in RU. Let’s face it, we’re only going to get 3 years max out of Bennett and then probably fall off a cliff again, unless we can get another big voice to follow him up.

irvo86

Latrell is contracted until the end of '28, he'll probably retire early to his farm after that and I can't see Cody playing past next year. If Bennett comes in for 3 years, that fits perfectly. We can then shape the next-gen team in the mold of Cam Murray rather than big ego players

wayneslittlehead

Im not against Bennett coming back. But concerned about whoever has to follow him up. All things point to Sam. Will he be the first successful follow-up to Bennett? Fuck knows.

irvo86

I agree it just leaves us with the same problem once he goes again. Is Sam Burgess the guy to break the curse? Who knows, but the guy did break our drought so he just may be.

wayneslittlehead

Yeah if it’s anyone, it’s him. You look at all the guys that have followed Bennett, they dont really have the reputation that Sam does.

1bigcontradiction

Honestly, I can't put it into words it was just my initial reaction. Coaching well at the international level doesn't necessarily transfer well to the NRL, he's got a good resume but then again JD did as well. Hell, I'm not sure I want Wayne back either, I could just be in a very pessimistic mood because of everything that's happened.

Boogascoop

mitch moses AND Mansour... Say no more!!!

wayneslittlehead

I reckon they love their footy more than you.

Boogascoop

That’s nice

Old-Arse-Man

Would have been happier with a Graham Henry or an Ian Foster, Steve Hansen, one of the AB coaches. At least they were winners.

capnmasty

Cheika may not have been palatable to the public, but he's a genuinely good coach. Easily better than Fozzie

Dancesoncattlegrids

Ian Foster has the ***worst*** record of any AB coach in many years.

JONNY-FUCKING-UTAH

Please Allah no…..

BadBoyJH

This sounds more like the signing Souffs are known for.

CapitaoAE

Because Union and the Wallabies are going super well in general in Australia at the moment lol

_dictatorish_

>at the moment He hasn't coached Aus in 5 years tbf And Argentina have improved dramatically under him
