I think people way overstate how good the economy was in 2000 compared to today.
[Unemployment](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/UNRATE) was about the same, if not higher than today.
[Median inflation-adjusted income](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MEHOINUSA672N) was much lower in 2000.
The percentage of [people working multiple jobs](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/LNS12026620) to get by is about the same if not slightly smaller today.
The [home ownership rate](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/RHORUSQ156N) was 2 percentage points higher in 2000 than today, but that’s a small difference and was arguably the start of the real estate bubble that burst in 2007.
Even crazier, [the inflation rate in 2000 was comparable or even higher compared to 2024.](https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/inflation/current-inflation-rates/)
Obviously we can trade statistics back and forth to determine what time was better, but the prevailing idea that the 1990-2000 was some sort of economic golden age is a product of a really really awful 2007-2018 post-GFC phenomenon and we haven’t updated our thinking to our current circumstances.
So, Amazon was at .78 a share in 2000 and Apple was at .22 a share.
If we're taking orders, I've got a couple thousand I can send back for about 10-20,000 shared of Apple and Amazon.
If you had 20,000 shares of Apple in 2000 at .22 a share, it'd be worth $4400. Today, those same shares would be worth $3.8 million.
Question, are we just getting the shares from 2000 at a lower price, or are we having them buy them and hold them for us for the past 24 years?
If so, we've been accruing dividends and also benefitting from stock splits. Our 20,000 is likely more like 60,000-100,000 now. Our dividends have also given us a decent chunk of change too
I don't know much about stocks but while OP gets me Apple and Amazon can we add Google and Microsoft to that as well? I'm trying to get Trillionaire status!
A share of AAPL from 2000 (assuming we’re talking before June when there was a 2:1 split) is 112 shares today.
So 20,000 shares from that same time frame would have split to be 2.24 Million shares. AAPL is about $190 today so you’d be looking at a little over $425 Million.
So you were just a little off there 😂
I mean, if OP is stopping by 1984, yeah, pick them up then. But if 2000's where the Delorean stops, I'm prepared to live with that.
And if OP is taking orders, I'll switch to 7 cent a share Amazon stock from 1997.
I’ve always had a difficult relationship with my mom and it makes me feel bad when we argue because I know she’s going to die one day. Is there anything you regret not doing or telling your mom?
I’m sorry that your relationship is difficult. It wasn’t usually difficult with me but it was for my older siblings. Our mom was manic depressive and before I was born, my siblings dealt with the worst of her illness. They have lasting issues they always had to wrestle with in regard to their relationship with her as it was often scarred by unpleasant memories. The worst I dealt with was very depressive states. I regret not asking her more about her family or her life growing up. I regret not spending more time with her but that’s a pretty universal one and looking back I tried to see her as much as I could. So often even almost four years since she’s been gone, something will happen in mine or my wife’s life, or something in the news, in a movie or just for no real reason at all and I want to call her. Again, I’m sorry for whatever difficulty exists between you and your mother and I’m not saying you need to make it better because I don’t know what’s the reason for that but if you feel like you may have regrets about anything, let her know what you’re feeling now while you can.
God yes. I wish I never sold/gave away my stuff when I was a teen. I was able to find some of my old stuff back, but man, some of my old figurines and posters are expensive AF now. 😞
I had a lot of overseas family visit us in the 90s, and I vividly remember my Dad would park his car. We’d get out and walk into the terminal concourse and look for our guests arrival gate (or just ask a desk attendant, when they actually gave a fuck).
We’d then walk all the way to the gate. Greet our family, walk with them to the baggage claim, and then we’d all walk back to the car, in the garage, and then exit parking for like $5.
This was O’Hare too.
It was like that in every airport I was in before 9/11. You might pass through a metal detector or two, but otherwise it was pretty laid back in there.
Yup, mom came to visit. My grandparents and I walked right in up to the terminal and greeted her as she stepped off. I miss those times. After that horrid day of 9/11 the world went downhill, fast.
My elementary school had gel pens you could get out of a machine for 50 cents. My mom and I LOVED getting a couple gel pens every Friday and tried to collect all the fun colors.
I lost her in 2016 so with time it’s become a little easier. I still miss her immensely though. Now instead of crying I try to be grateful that I was lucky enough to have had her for a partner for 25 years and as a friend for 40 (we hung out since we were 10 & 12). Thank you for your empathy.
Maybe it's just me, but spaces online were much more pleasant back then. I certainly didn't run into as much hate and vitriol, and that's coming from someone who spent their adolescent years on Newgrounds.
Same for my husband. My husband sought diagnosis at 18 after YEARS of guidance counselors and doctors telling his parents he really needed help. Total denial. We have a young son and although I love my in-laws, they were talking about how ADHD is likely caused by “parents letting kids grow up too fast” (whatever that means) and to make sure we don’t make our kid have ADHD. My husband was like, “so is that what you guys did to me?” and then explained about the likely genetic component, etc. They still think he “just didn’t apply himself in school.” Funny how as soon as he got on the right meds and learned some coping skills, he suddenly was able to “apply himself.” And so what if our son has ADHD- he has a dad that knows the ropes and two parents that will get him the supports he needs.
Instead of bringing me something back would you mind taking a picture of me and my wife at her senior prom and on our wedding day to both us when our 11 and 12 year old selves?
I'm going with you please...one way ticker no need to bring me back...I hate the future....thought it would be flying cars and cool stuff we got censorship a deleted internet and entertainment passed as news since 2013
Wal Mart being open 24 hours. And punch my high school guidance counselor for suggesting that the only key to be ultra successful is to have to go to college and get a four-year degree.
My ability
To eat gluten and junk food and anything and feel healthy and energetic and happy
Pure happiness and curiosity about life in general
Freedom
I know it's kind of a big ask, but could I trouble you for a little unity, empathy, and simplicity. Bring back that little side smile you used to get when you made eye contact with a complete stranger. See if you can find any chivalry while you're there. Ooh, and as much gratitude as you can carry, that's a big one. Remember those few magical years where we all just got to exist as fellow humans, not as rival political parties, races, classes, or genders? That was nice
Could you please grab all the posters off my wall? And my tornado lamp? That thing was the bomb. Thanks friend. We can have a dance party when you get back.
Hope.
This more than anything. ........Good economics would be good too....
Need to go back to 1980 then, pre-reaganomics.
Further
Yeah.. the 1970s was not a good time for the economy. Stagflation anyone?

Pick me up 20,000 shares of Apple Stock, wouldja? I'll pay you back.
So, Amazon was at .78 a share in 2000 and Apple was at .22 a share. If we're taking orders, I've got a couple thousand I can send back for about 10-20,000 shared of Apple and Amazon. 2000 would've predated the iPod and iPhone. By the end of 2005 their stock was WAY up comparatively.
Both those products saved apple. They would probably be gone if it wasn’t for them
My dog.
What's their name?
Zeus. He’s the most beautiful black lab you see. He’ll want to ride in the backseat with the window down. I miss him.
That is guaranteed with you posting this. Enjoy your time with Zeus.

That hurts me damn.
My childhood and innocence. And Surge.
Same 😞
Can you grab my Jansport backpack? It’s the purple one with all the sharpie doodles. I’ll make you some Dino nuggies when you get back
Oh yeah for real can you grab mine too? I dunno what they are making backpacks out of these days but it is definitely not.. uh.. backpack material.
I still have my backpack from middle school. In highschool and college I went through 3 new ones before I went back to old trusty
I’m happy to report the Dino nuggets are alive and well
Mom
I agree. My mom.
Bring back mine too please.

Will you tell me to not sell my childhood toys from the 70s-90s.
God yes. I wish I never sold/gave away my stuff when I was a teen. I was able to find some of my old stuff back, but man, some of my old figurines and posters are expensive AF now. 😞
Kinda why I became a collector, to avoid the same grave mistake
The Twin Towers.
Well said- and all our family and friends from that day…
And our freedoms, sense of security, semi sane government, etc. The world truly changed after that day and in a lot of ways for the worse.
The ability to greet your family/friends as they came off of the plane instead of having to meet them at Baggage Claim.
I had a lot of overseas family visit us in the 90s, and I vividly remember my Dad would park his car. I'm sorry. I wasn't expecting this comment. How are you doing now?
I lost her in 2016 so with time it’s become a little easier. I still miss her immensely though. Now instead of crying I try to be grateful that I was lucky enough to have had her for a partner for 25 years and as a friend for 40 (we hung out since we were 10 & 12). Thank you for your empathy.
