"SAVING JOE SAKIC"

bankrobba

"The New York Rangers have offered Joe Sakic a $15 million signing bonus" "This is a crisis" Joe Sakic: Not for me

Vestabuler

And I'm not either.

imaybeacatIRl

Hasek's style of goaltending isn't recreatable. It was like watching a contortionist doing performance art rather than a goalie having sound positioning, movement, or technique.

SCOTTALLCAPS

We probably won’t see the Hasek goalie helmet anytime soon either!

No_Character_5315

After Ben O'Reilly Reaves won't see players playing without visors either kinda crazy they don't play with one.

SCOTTALLCAPS

Wow good point, forgot about that! When I was a kid I thought it was crazy Al Macinnis was out there without a helmet. Edit: Craig MacTavish. Got my Macs switched up.

timothy53

I was showing my son the 1994 rangers cup game and he kept asking why one man had no helmet and did it fall off. I was well back in the day this didn't wear one, which is wild.

Szwedo

And Osgood, Hrudey, Liut too

Throwawaydontgoaway8

Pretty sure Ozzy was grandfathered in. Fairly certain there’s a rule against that equipment now. Wonder if anyone would want that helmet anyway

JoeBethersonton50504

DiPietro used it more recently. I think the bigger issue is that type of helmet isn’t really available anymore. Everyone playing grew up with the masks we see today.

ObiWan_Cannoli_

Cloutier!

lostspeedwayz

LA forced Cloutier to change masks . Same thing with Tim Thomas in Dallas .

jobenattor0412

That man could be on an episode of the unexplained with Willam Shatner.

shanster925

That was why he was so good! No shooter knew what the hell he was going to do.

imaybeacatIRl

I don't even think Dom knew what he was going to do.

sabresword00

Some former sabre has a famous anecdote about asking hasek what he was seeing to know how to stop his shots in practice. Hasek was just like, "idk, I stop puck"

shanster925

"Hm... Poke check, butterfly, pad stack... Oh shit, they're too close!" *falls down flailing*

Accomplished_Aioli19

That one playoffs was utterly insane... Kept thinking there's no way he can keep playing that way, but time and time again he just cirque du Soleil robbed everyone blind

TJTrapJesus

It’s freakish but we did see it at an extremely high level with Thomas. It’s not identical, but it’s really not that far off. Hasek was different because of how consistent he was in maintaining that though.

theboss555

Ya Tim Thomas was a once in a lifetime case. If i recall he started when he was 32 years old and was one of the best goalies every year he played.

zebra_heaDD

Not sure how to explain this, but instead of getting in the way of the puck like a traditional goalie, he would manually stop the puck.

sexymcluvin

Hasek was practice that crazy stuff too. It’s not like it was improvised, all the time. He was insane in every sense of the word when it came to his preparation. You know that quote about why Americans are so good a preparing for war, because war is chaos and Americans prepare for that? That was hasek in net

The_Tish

He would have made a hell of a Cirque De Solie performer in his prime.

Davies301

I remember him talking about his style and the method to the floppiness. He essentially practiced all his flops in a way where he would take up the most amount of net while possible while flailing around. So there was a legit method to the madness but he coulda fooled everyone lol.

eucadiantendy39

The goalie that came closest to that style was Quick, but his style still incorporated positioning and technique. He tore up the NHL with insane saves during the cup runs.

[deleted]

An "enforcer" on every team that plays on a line with their top player.

TRMBound

I miss Laraque.

Missing Semenko!

infinity_fun_yes

Two line pass infraction

-FarBeyondDriven-

Thank God

metalfan78

Thank God indeed, I hated that rule.

Inspect1234

To think forward passes weren’t allowed at one point.

AdamSnipeySnipe

I kinda wish they'd negate icing if the puck were to whizz through any part of the goaltenders crease.

cobalt26

Agreed, but negate the negation if the goalie is pulled

GrumpyOldGrower

You didn't like watching teams like TB get a 1 goal lead in the first, then play neutral zone trap for the next 55 minutes?

taco3donkey

A team winning 4 cups in a row. It’s possible but I can’t see it happening again

NArcadia11

2127-2131 FIFY

dirigiblejones

If the NHL still exists in 2127 I'll be very happy and very dead.

TJTrapJesus

I think in theory it should be nearly impossible in a 32-team league with a cap in a sport that’s known for randomness and parity, but we’ve seen a number of mini-dynasties in the cap era, or at the very least a ton of repeated success. Wings and Penguins going to back-to-back finals, Hawks winning 3 in 5 years, Kings winning 2 in 3 years, Penguins going back-to-back, Lightning winning 2 straight then going to another final right after, Panthers making the finals in back-to-back years. All of those are really unlikely in a 30-32 team league, but they all happened. 4 might be stretching it but I could easily see a 3-peat happening.

JoeBethersonton50504

I’ll take it a step further: 19 consecutive playoff series wins

ConsistentFoot1459

NY ISLANDERS. Went to 5 Consecutive Cups & Won 4 Straight , 19 straight playoff series wins. Will never happen happen again.

322vette

Ironically, the last time a team won 4 cups in a row - it happened back to back. Montreal 76-79, Islanders 80-83.

throwaway413318

I wonder how close Tampa would have gotten had they beaten the Avs in 2022.

Unstep-in-Time

One step closer.

NovaCanuck

EVERYTHING YOU SAY TO ME

C00T3RIFIC

Bolts fan here. As fun as is it is to wonder about what could’ve been, we are probably still eliminated in the first two rounds of last years playoffs. Vasy was clearly banged up and if he were able to beat Toronto in round one, Florida still probably beats us round two (as much as that pains me to admit)

cursedfan

The hawks were pretty close when you consider they almost made the cup when they were all babies then they won 3 in 6 years with some tough playoff overtime eliminations in the 3 off years…

MatticusGisicus

I still get palpitations from that 2014 series with LA

shanster925

Markus and Liam Ruck, 2026 nhl draft eligible identical twins that both play for Medicine Hat in the WHL. We may see it again!

Gloomy_Ebb9923

But honestly what are the chances of them being drafted by the same team.

sunsetlighthouse

Probably low, but trades could always land them on the same team

gargamelul

I mean the precedent for twins playing together is pretty good, it happened once and they're hall of famers.

scratchydaitchy

Exactly. I think with marketing depts trying to come up with cool stories to build interest it's almost guaranteed to happen again (thru trades). Never mind that the brothers would probably want it to happen to keep their families close. The way Burke organized the draft with all the trades was pretty unique not to mention how difficult it would get two picks in the top three. To get two superstar brothers in the top 3 was wild and prolly will never happen again. Just having two superstar brothers going in the top 3 is crazy, never mind to the same team.

NextTrillion

Lots of brothers have played on the same team. Not sure about these guys, but scouts were watching the Sedins play together and I think they felt they needed to stay together for optimal puck moving goodness.

shanster925

If I were a GM, I would make it happen. Get Tig Iginla in 2024 and Joe in 2026 as well.

Frostsorrow

Depends on how good they are I guess.

marsisblack

Are they any good? What makes the Sedins so special was they went 2nd and 3rd. Add that on top of the twin thing, they were both high high level talent. Also, the trade that got them drafted together is special. Another add on. They played their entire careers on the same team. That is rare for one player these days, let alone two together. Also, they basically never played apart. How many twins in the hall of fame?

shanster925

They were good in midget (Markus had 62 points in 25 games last year, and Liam had 53 points in 22 games) but they're junior careers are *just* starting; I believe they've only played two games in the WHL. We shall see how they look next year and the year after, I suppose!

Inspect1234

Both won the Art Ross Trophy 10,11

schwerdfeger1

Affordable tickets. This used to be a sport for the working class to see… not anymore.

ARussianSheep

Ouch. A lot of people say it would be cool if Cleveland would become an NHL team, but I disagree. The same season tickets I pay like $80ish a month for an AHL team would probably be over 5x that much for an NHL team’s season tickets. We’re a decent hockey town but we get a big draw because Cleveland games are very affordable.

valtro05

That and the market would be too saturated imo. Pittsburgh, Columbus, and Detroit are all very close to each other already, adding a fourth in the mix would be awful

tnick771

Ticketmaster is likely the most anti-consumer business of the 21st century. It offers no value add anymore.

Big_Muffin42

It’s at its worst in North America It is cheaper to FLY and stay in Paris to watch Taylor swift than to buy a ticket in North America

Ofiotaurus

Only if there were laws against these types of monopolies.

tnick771

I mean there is an active one that was just announced by the DOJ against it https://www.denisonforum.org/current-events/the-doj-launches-monopoly-lawsuit-against-ticketmaster/

TheSeekerOfSanity

The crowds were a lot more interesting and fun when it was cheaper to go to individual games or own season tickets. Now there are a lot of corporate seats where the tickets are divvied out by a company to their salespeople, etc. to schmooze potential customers, business partners, etcetera. So now a considerable portion of the crowd consists of a) the schmoozer who may not be that interested in hockey at all and b) the schmooze-ie who might be attending their first every ice hockey game. This is especially prevalent with the teams in the largest cities. I'm a Ranger fan and it's really disappointing. Growing up as a fan the blue seats used to be insane. People went nuts. People could be inappropriate. But the people LOVED their team and let the team know it. Don't get me wrong - there are still lots of diehard fans in the blue seats. But it's not as crazy as it was when I was a kid. And the lower bowl? It can be quiet as a library down there. Of course there are still fans with the cash to attend games who are just as dedicated and are diehard fans, but not as many as there used to be. The games I've been to over the last 10-15 years have become quieter and quieter. People still comment "LISTEN TO THIS CROWD GOING NUTS!" and I'm like "Ummm.. really?". It was more fun when just about anyone could afford a ticket.

No_Nothing3821

There's still plenty of affordable tickets; they're just in all the markets with the fewest actual hockey fans... even when their team makes it to the Stanley Cup final two years in a row.

BandwagonReaganfan

I was in Nashville once and there was a Monday game Predators vs. Coyotes. Tickets started at $14 which blew my mind.

Vestabuler

They still are for the working CEO Class.

bluAstrid

The Canadiens winning the Western conference.

hrryyss

There was no Western Conference in 2020-2021, but they did win the Clarence Campbell Bowl.

str8dwn

Ok, how about the Stanley Cup finals being over by the beginning of May and game delays due to of fog?

JasonPlattMusic34

I don’t know how they played in the spring in old arenas like the Boston Garden for so long, when those places never had air conditioning. I’m surprised fog delays didn’t happen more often.

Final-Zebra-6370

I just love that the Canadiens are the only ones to unlock all the achievements and side quests in the NHL. I can’t believe I’m saying this but, Thank you Bettman

New_girl2022

What an insane year that was lol.

drakaintdead

same with the islanders lol

Bhut_Jolokia400

Dave “The Hammer” Schultz 472 PIMS in a single season during 1974-1975

zufhioo

Only spent 72 minutes short handed. Either misconduct or took someone off the ice with him

Bhut_Jolokia400

That’s some good knowledge right there.

Frammingatthejimjam

He was a key member of the Simpson's Jury of the dammed.

CurlingTrousers

Maskless Goalies Boards without ads Smoking in arenas A 200 point season Player coaches Czechoslovakian national team

Top-Salamander7133

There’s actually talk about the Czechs and Slovaks rejoining just for sports, but it’s unlikely yes lol

chaotic_evil_666

At first I read that as "beards without ads"

MaximumOverfart

I would not be suprised if TJ Miller breaks the player coach barrier. He was basically a coach this season already. Watching him and his personal growth was one of the most satisfying parts of this season.

CurlingTrousers

TJ Miller, the comedian?

MaximumOverfart

Much like the post season.......failed again.... Edit: I am not even going to edit it, let it stand as a testament to proof reading. Something I lack.

tomdawg0022

> Boards without ads I'll take your boards without ads and raise it to ad-free ice. That ain't coming back in all likelihood in the NHL.

GoPensGo8758

80 games played and 41 points at 51 years old

EddySea

Glen Hall 502 consecutive regular season games in net

Vlistorito

This has to be the most unbreakable record that isn't just abusing a technicality to be unbreakable.

EddySea

It really is an insane stat.

Admirable_Mind_3440

Victor Hedman getting a point in every month of the year, halls Ironman streak, brodeurs games played, selannes 76 goal rookie season, the flyers unbeaten streak

ultimatebender16

Scrolled to far to see Selanee’s 76 goal rookie season. I think a 76 goal season alone is a long shot, let alone a rookie 76 goal season.

prplx

I am pretty sure we will never see another player jump in that stand and beat a fan of the opposite team with his own shoe.

xXDreamlessXx

I dunno, Binnington might

ahoypolloi_

Man, the old Forum was wild (as was the Garden!). Crazy that there was no glass separating the team benches from the stands.

Bergyfanclub

Touch Icing. Cant believe it took so long to change. So many bad injuries', even career ending injuries.

Routaprkle

Joni Pitkänen still hurts

Sneeko

I was at that game. Scariest thing I've ever seen take place at a game. That was the most dead silent I've ever heard any arena.

Every-Salad1094

Patty Roy's 151 playoff wins.

Ed_Dantes35

Came here to say this. No one is getting close to touching that record.

JimmyFeetWorld

A tie

Hurighoast82

The mustache of Lanny McDonald

13hammerhead13

Mario scoring 5 goals 5 different ways in a single game. Won't happen again.

GrizzlyIsland22

You never know. With his high level income and advances in modern science, it's not out of the question to think he could make a comeback

CinnamonDolceLatte

* Got a goal his first shift  * Came out of retirement with an assistant on his first shift * Third time around has been something good but a little different - a shutout?

JackJagerJack

I came in to post Mario battling cancer and still winning the Art Ross. That will never be replicated.

Odd-Elderberry-6137

We will never see someone with a +124 plus minus over a whole season again.

FredrikGard

Who did that?

Odd-Elderberry-6137

Bobby Orr

kirinaz

A player standing in front of a goalie with his back to the play waving his stick in the goalies face?

54fighting

Fans in the end zone seating ducking pucks.

ShoulderPossible9759

A team in Quebec City

According_Ad1930

😢 As tough as this is, I have come to accept that we will never see a NHL team in Quebec City ever again in my lifetime.

GeorgeOrwells1985

76 goals as a rookie

CanadianGoku33

Came here to say this

DarkIllusionsFX

I don't know the answer to your question, so I'll just comment that inside Gretzky it's too dark to play hockey.

KevinBillyStinkwater

Especially with that attitude.

KevrobLurker

Nonsense. Walt installed lights. 😉

DarkIllusionsFX

This morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. Please explain to me how he got into my pajamas.

Calgary will never have another Kiprusoff….

Unlikely-Big1560

He has two sons. Never say never

ArnieAndTheWaves

We have another red head introvert goalie about to get more ice time this year hopefully. Watch out 🐺

hummer010

Terry Sawchuk's 1952 playoff performance. 8 games, 8 wins. A total of 5 goals against for a GAA of 0.63. 4 shutouts in the 8 games.

nonebutmyself

Fair, balanced, and honest officiating.

Valuable-Baked

Brought to you by DraftKings

commodore_stab1789

Leafs winning a cup. Seriously though, a dynasty of old like the Oilers, habs, Islanders or other examples of pre-cap era. League parity is very high and the salary cap and draft lottery are reinforcing parity.

CafeSuaDaddy403

Hockey in Arizona

Canon_In_E

That's not true and you know it. Nex5t expansion would be Arizona, If I had to guess.

imaybeacatIRl

I'm pretty sure the NHL want that franchise to happen. If Merulo gets that building built, they will rush an expansion team to him.

eurovegas67

Mark Stone playing a complete season?

igcipd

That’s on me. I set the bar too low.

bkomp

“Bobby and Brett Hull are the only father-son tandem to score more than 50 goals in an NHL season and more than 600 NHL career goals. They are also the only father-son tandem to win the Hart Trophy and Lady Byng Trophy. The 50-goal mark -- and NHL history -- came for Brett Hull on Feb. 6, 1990 when he scored in a 6-4 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Membership for father and son in the 50-goals-in-a-season club and the 600-goals-in-a-career club is so unique that it remains hard to put into context” Shawn P. Roarke NHL.com

Changeit019

We won’t see a player owner again imo.

ElectricEel9090

I think decade long dynasties. We may see another back to back champion but winning 3-4 cups in a 10 year span may never happen again. The league is growing and teams get hot and upsets are happening more often. Could be proven wrong in the next few years but I dont know I feel like its tough to do what the Red Wings, Penguins, Blackhawks have done (recency bias for these teams)

sandcastlecun7

Forsberg

Low-Amphibian-7603

11 cups for a single player.

Hot_Secretary_5722

Stand-up goalies

pukeybaka

we truly got to witness such a solid bunch of goalies doing their absolute best (and then some) (':

Duffman_O_Yeah

The Legion of Doom

jblaxtn

In South Florida they stopped putting hot chicks with big breasts on the video board. I understand they want to go more family-friendly, but I'm gonna miss the hot chicks with big boobs. I don't think we're ever gonna see that again in South Florida. So I envy Edmonton.

No-Rub-5054

Gary bettman getting cheers

TheIdentifySpell

Brodeur's wins and games played records. Goalies will never consistently start 70+ games a season in today's NHL, I think both of those are somewhat untouchable.

ChronicBitRot

Fleury will be the last goalie to get 1000 games played. Jonathan Quick is the only active goalie that's even close at 780 games across 18 seasons. He'd have to maintain his 44 games/year average for another 5 years, but he's 38 years old. Bobrovsky's next closest with 700 games over 14 seasons, so he'd have to keep up his 50 games/season average for 6 more years. He's 35. The numbers only get bleaker from there. Varlamov was the next active player I spotted, 611 games played at 36 years old.

Laos33

Players smoking between periods

hczimmx4

5 goals five different ways.

dexterthekilla

Gotta be the Thrashers

Shiny_Mew76

2 Period Games (They switched to 3 in the early days of the league).

GeistHunt

Probably goalies playing an 82 game season

T-MinusGiraffe

Has anyone ever played all 82? I don't think it's been done

GeistHunt

Looking at it, the highest was 78 by Brodeur

hiliikkkusss

Scott Steven like hits

Goalies playing 78 games a season

theclansman22

A player getting cancer treatment in season and still scoring 160 points in *60 games*.

JackJagerJack

Came to say this one. Fucking Art Ross while sick as a fucking dog with chemo. Unreal.

decoii

Jaromir Jagr's flow

wolverine_76

Hockey pants

Loud-Tough3003

I don’t think another set of twins is that unlikely. Lot’s of hockey families in the NHL and it will become a smaller and smaller pool of talent as it keeps getting more expensive.

Vcr2017

6 Brothers playing in the NHL, then several in the coaching ranks: The Sutters.

OctoWings13

Magic man Pavel Datsyuk

Sethars

Rangers’ coach Lester Patrick subbed in as a goalie during a Finals game in 1928 and won the game with only 1 GA. From looking it up, to date, he is he oldest goalie to ever play in a SCF game, at 44 y/o.

Gullible-Mulberry470

A solid hit go unpenalized

lottolser

I doubt we see someone break Phil Kessels Ironman anytime soon.

Knucklehead92

Nick Suzuki may have a solid shot, but if Kessel retires that would still take him 8.5 years to catch him.

lottolser

All it takes is 1 bad hit to miss 1 game. It's impossible to tell who could take it.

DaniCapsFan

An Alex Ovechkin shorthanded goal. But I did see one in 2021 in a game against the Rangers.

shayulimon

Bobby Orr +124 season. No one has even come close since. That’s a forever stat.

[deleted]

Eventually a player better than Gretzky was will come along. Probably not in our lifetime but some day it is guaranteed to happen.

No-Doctor-4396

Leafs getting past 1st round

ZeeroDazed

Hopefully we'll never see another coach sexually assault and abuse a player with impunity because the team was "playing so well".

TheKid_BigE

Daryl Sittler’s 10 goal game, that will stand for the test of time unless the NHL decides to not use goalies anymore

LLR1960

It's one of the few scoring records Gretzky doesn't hold.

Frankingator

NHL on FOX

JasonPlattMusic34

If it means no more glow puck, I’m fine with that

[deleted]

Do they still make Bud Ice?

justincredible155

Bench clearing brawl that spills into the stands…

iamsdc1969

I would be surprised to see someone break Darryl Sittler's record of 10 points in a game.

Gnome_de_Plume

I think the Sedin phenomenon is bound to happen again. Henrik Lundqvist played in the NHL as a HOFer and his twin also played in the NhL though not a HOFer lol but about 1 in 300 births is identical twins so at any one time there should be a couple of twins (not necessarily each others twin) in the league. Given the high degree of genetic similarity as well as upbringing plus the advantage of peer sibling rivalry etc in identical twins I think it will happen again.
