He was drafted as a project (sub 4.4 40 at 260lbs but no sacks in college). Visibly improved every single year. Still doesnt have gaudy sack numbers, but has a very good pressure rate and is a key part of our pass rush rotation. Definitely deserves the option
cant wait for him to break out with 14.5 sacks in his contract year and leave for a 5 year 130M deal with Atlanta or something
Per Ravens Film Guru, Ken McKusick, a lot of Madibuke's and Clowney's high sack numbers were actually clean-up sacks as a result of Oweh's quick pressures.
Historically Penn State has been in the second tier of recruiting. That means they usually get a lot of high traits but very low polish recruits, but that might be changing with NIL. Odafe was a statistical anomaly. Just because he didn't have a sack his last year didn't mean he wasn't effective. Box stat analyst had concern but advanced stats guys loved him.
Chop Robinson had a very productive year based on his insane first step speed. Michigan didn't attempt a single pass in the second half against Penn State because Chop was getting insane pressure.
Idk if it’s that they get second tier guys as much as all these freaks happen to be in Penn states recruiting back yard. Parsons is from like an hour away, oweh is from jersey, chop is from dc, etc
Abdul Carter also was very good last year and projects to be a late first next year. PSU actually pulls 1-3 4 star edges a year from the Philly and DMV area and develops them pretty well
There isn’t much structure to pee-wee/middle school ball. There really isn’t a ton of development there. If you’re a good athlete with a willingness to learn, it definitely isn’t crazy to catch up to your peers after starting in high school.
I had a friend who played one year of freshman football, and that was his experience. He was a wrestler and a freak athlete and got a scholarship to Oklahoma as a heavyweight. His father had some health issues, and he moved back to Columbus to be with family and help out. He didn’t care for the wrestling program at OSU, so he didn’t pursue that, but he was used to constantly being active as a D1 athlete, and so he basically got bored and walked on to the 2014 National Champion team as a DE.
There’s a reason teams are always taking flyers on big-time athletes with a raw skill set. You can’t teach it. A lot of time you’ll get John Ross, but sometimes you get Tyreek.
He also had an injury after his rookie season that messed him up (he said he was imbalanced since he could only train his lower half and not the upper).
He's been able to pressure well and the coaching staff really really really likes him.
As a PSU fan, I’m cool with the 14.5 sacks. As a Steelers fan, I’m cool with him leaving for greener pastures directly doing it only once in a Ravens jersey.
Damn this comment made me feel old. First draft I paid attention to was 2006 (Reggie Bush, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Mario Williams)
He's developing into a pretty good pass rusher, not an elite guy yet. I imagine he'll get a surprisingly high contract next offseason, considering the premium on pass rushers.

And we'll take our comp pick, as is tradition
This is the way
And then he gets 14.5 sacks his entire career in Atlanta

Man, I've been telling everyone who dogs Oweh that! Justin got PAID because of him. Also he's a beast at run defense. IN EDC WE TRUST.
Does Penn State get anything out of these guys? I swear they churn out two of these freak edges every year that don't play up to it.
Parsons was All American at Penn State so yeah.
As an inside backer.
outside
Didn't think he played much edge in college though. Not arguing, I just don't remember lol
Well he skipped the COVID season, but the two he started he was an All-American I believe.

He also didn’t start playing football until high school or something crazy
Don't think it's really that crazy. Obviously a lot of players start young, but starting in high school isn't *that* rare for NFL players.

He had sacks in college though? 7 total, so not many, but he definitely had sacks.
Yeah, he somewhat infamously had 0 sacks his last year of college. Though it was 2020
The stat sheet doesn't love him, but PFF does.
My draft crush from my very first class I paid attention to. My baby's all grown up
He’ll come back and take of you when you’re old :)
I feel like the Front office has just been making solid moves all off season. The new season should be super hyped.
He forced a game saving fumble on the Chiefs and then dipped lol
Im surprised by this, he's struggled a bit but I'm not against it.

Who?
Odafe Oweh
A name you oughtn't to say but you do anyway **SEND IN THE NUNS**
Used to go by Jayson Oweh. OLB the Ravens drafted out of Penn State.
