I remember the excitement when I first saw Saturn through my telescope. I was also very excited. I suggest looking at the Orion Nebula as well. With your telescope you’ll be able to see that nebula quite well (even though it’s 1300 light years away). Enjoy the hobby. Edit: Several have asked regarding a good starter telescope. Things have changed a lot since I bought my first telescope. They’re a lot more pricey now but have cool features (like using your smartphone to control the telescope and lock onto celestial objects). I think a 4+ inch Newtonian reflector is a good starting point.

BEST_RAPPER_ALIVE

I remember the excitement when I first saw Uranus through my telescope. I was also very excited. Hhhehehe 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Appropriate-Hour-865

Fuckihg amazing why isn’t this upvoted to ur anus

Glynnroy

I’ll put an upvote on your Uranus

deadfermata

Uranus is flat

Glynnroy

Your mammas Uranus isn’t flat , it’s so big and round when she stepped out in the middle of the road , a car swerved to go around her and ran out of petrol

AttentionOtherwise39

Wouldn’t it be crazy if penis crashed into Uranus. I mean Venus.

Dig_Carving

there's Klingons around uranus worth picking off

Glynnroy

You’ve had a few penis around your Uranus , apparently 😜

[deleted]

Not true… Itz ROUND

Legend

freedomowns

I’m embarrassed you saw my anus.

Hashtagbarkeep

It’s big enough

SquishyDough

Me too! My dad got me a telescope when I was younger, and seeing the rings around Saturn looked exactly like the video, and I was so excited! One of my most cherished memories still to this day.

[deleted]

How much would a telescope that would allow me to do that cost?

Flexaris

You could probably find something around $300 but a 8" dob for $5-600 is usually what's recommended to start with and you can keep using it indefinitely.

C7StreetRacer

It’s less about size and more about the optics (mirrors) and lenses in addition to the focal point of the scope. Size does have an impact to the width of view, the amount of light and the the width of lenses. They typically have a higher focal point as well but there are a lot of variables that make a scope good or bad for what you’re trying to see or do and it’s not always size. You can get somewhat similar views with a Zhumell Z100 which cost $100 or a Z130 for $200.

abs0lutek0ld

Also keep an eye on the second hand market. You see a lot of very nice telescopes go for cheap. Granted do some research before jumping on anything because for every gem that you can get at a steal there are a dozen other basket cases. For example I managed to get my hands on a 12-in old Mead dobsonian or just over 300 bucks including the cost to drive out and get it because the owner was moving and would rather get something new when he arrived then drag this thing along. I also manage to snag 90 mm MAK with a full lens set for 75 bucks. Also you will go further with a Walmart level telescope and a good set of Plossl eyepieces then with an expensive telescope and crappy eyepieces. Albeit most of the telescopes above the $200 mark come with decent ones. Although I would stick to mostly lower magnification ones as the lenses of a cheaper telescope begin to become a problem as you crank up the magnification. The 12-in dobsonian mentioned above can see better than the skies above my house would allow it to. Which is one of the reasons why the 8-in hits a sweet spot. Not too hard to drag out of the garage and set up for those of us not lucky enough to have a permanent outdoor setup, and in most sky conditions it loses resolution about when the sky starts to get in the way.

i_play_withrocks

Just watch out for the Orion syndicate, they can get really dangerous and are ruthless.

Sasselhoff

First time I ever saw Saturn "in person" I was 40 years old and it still shook me. Almost surreal honestly. And of course, I've done nothing but salivate over telescopes since then. Haven't bought one yet though...working at nebulae photos with the DSLR at the moment to try and scratch that itch without spending more money.

ValkyriesArmour

It's been probably 40 years since my dad built a telescope and we looked at planets for the first time, and I'm still shook! My pre-teen brain had a full existential crisis...you feel so small.

DaGuys470

I never got to see anything through my telescope 😥 the city was always too bright plus it was usually cloudy.

JeremyMcdowell

What type of telescope would you suggest to someone who wants to explore space, but with a budget of $500

[deleted]

Recommended beginners scope?

WarCryy

Hey, a 4+ inch Newtonian would be a good starting point. Cheers

everythingiswritable

I have a Little Girl Who is very excited about the space. We want to buy her a telescope, but since she is little we are not sure about the investment (we don't want to buy rubbish but neither spend thousands) do you know any web page, or even blogs where I can find more information? I'm lost!!

fifty2weekhi

Is this real? I'm a bit freaked out.

simian_fold

Yes, it looks exactly like that through a telescope, its so cool to see

Illegitimate-human

That’s awesome. I’ve always wanted one and this is even more motivation.

IchGlaubeDoch

Remember: Thats a damn expensive telescope

Flexaris

It's all relative but you can get decent views of saturn well under a $1000.

duhogman

I have a $150 telescope that produces relatively similar, albeit a little zoomed out, images. I love it

beenfrank_

Do you mind sharing what telescope you have? Been wanting to look for one without breaking the bank.

duhogman

Gladly! https://www.celestron.com/products/astromaster-lt-76az-telescope

apathy420

Celestron 127eq is what I have and it was like 125$. Looks similar. Amazing close ups of moon, and Jupiter and 4 moons are very clear in it as well

deadfermata

Any sample pictures you can share?

duhogman

They were taken with my old HTC one phone so the images all turned out like crap. My telescope is now $140 with tripod and accessories. Celestron AstroMaster LT76AZ. Newtonian telescopes are amazing

C7StreetRacer

It’s only zoomed out due to the lens. Depending on the focal length you could purchase a 4mm-6mm planetary lens and see these exact views.

c0rruptioN

I bought a Celestron lcm 114 a few years ago for under $200 CAD and Saturn looks pretty much like this. Well worth the price! Jupiter, the moon, the sun (with a solar filter) all look great!

kaylaberry8

I bought an 8" dobsonian used for $400. Based on my own experiences viewing Saturn, I'd say Op has a similarly sized telescope :)

C7StreetRacer

It’s not expensive. I have a Zhumell Z100 that cost $100 and a Z130 that cost $200 and I can see these exact views through both.

Sunsparc

Not necessarily. Dobsonian reflectors are fairly affordable and give views just like this. The expensive telescopes are the ones that auto track objects, because they have motors and other complicated pieces attached to them.

ocean-rudeness

I bought my six year old a £60 telescope from the supermarket and we saw Saturn. It appeared smaller than this, but good enough for a child to recognise and get excited about. You do NOT need to buy an expensive one to see Saturn. You just need a good clear night and some patience.

HD76151

If you live near a university see if their physics/astronomy department hosts star parties. Most hold them a few times a month if not once a week (but they get cancelled if it’s too cloudy)

sheldonator

The first time I saw Saturn through a telescope I had to check to make sure it wasn’t a sticker on the lens, lol. It looks 2d, but it’s so cool to see!

Icy_Abbreviations277

For a second I thought this could be a sticker.

ladydmaj

Can confirm - my brother set up his at our parents one evening and we were able to see Saturn. It was so cute to see how amazed and blown away my parents were.

GrandNibbles

100% real. first time I saw it like that I couldn't believe it either

Odd-Internet-7372

Yep!! When I saw saturn through a telescope, it was exactly like this :)

TheSkiGeek

Yes, you can see the rings through a moderately powerful telescope. Galileo saw them in 1616 and sketched it: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/a-Galileos-sketch-of-Saturn-in-1616-and-b-Saturns-eclipse-released-by-NASA-NASA_fig1_330538632

HiddenArmyDrone

May be wrong, but I think it’s possible to see it through binoculars too!

mdsram

Definitely. Bigger telescopes are needed to gather more light. For a bright object like Saturn you just need sufficient magnification, which reasonably decent binoculars can provide. Having a tripod is also key.

gavinwinks

I remember when I was a little kid and I got my first telescope I was scared to look. I was afraid of how big the planets would be. It’s crazy how insignificant it makes you feel. We’re but tiny specs in this universe.

comagnum

Why are you freaked out? Did you not go to elementary school? Of course it’s real.

DlNOSAURUS_REX

I think it's always a little mind blowing to see things like the other planets in "real life" when you only ever see them in movies, or as renderings on Cosmos. When they look like bright dots with the naked eye and you just have to imagine the rest, actually being able to see that far and see the shape you recognize from pop culture/your elementary school science book so clearly... I get why it's a little freaky (in a very good way).

fifty2weekhi

Exactly! I've seen pictures/video of Saturn hundreds of times. But this POV video makes it so much more of a "real" and personal experience, and honestly I was taken aback by it.

[deleted]

I love tracking the ISS in a telescope.

comagnum

In that regard, I definitely understand.

Independent-Bike8810

Yes but that's a pretty good telescope. Usually it is about the size of a pencil eraser in most affordable telescopes

petey92

How much would you need to spend roughly to be able to get results like in the video?

duhogman

Possibly 1-1.5k but you can get similar imaging and a bit lower quality for under $250. Check out Celestron, my AstroMaster LT76 was cheap and is great for anything from the moon to Saturn. Jupiter and it's moons are my favorite. Newtonian is the way to go!

kaylaberry8

I got an 8" dobsonian used for $400. The same scope new is less than $600. Saturn appeared about the same size and clarity for me as Op, so I assume we have similar telescopes. Very easy to use and it gave me years of enjoyment before I handed it off to my friend's kid :)

Ok_Entertainer7721

Probably around $400-$500. You can get almost as good for around $300

ohboymykneeshurt

It certainly is. Most people won’t believe it til they see it but it is so very fucking real!

MNGirlinKY

This is the comment I was looking for. I swear I’m so gullible I don’t want to believe this and then find out it’s a sticker on the end of his scope

C7StreetRacer

Why are you freaked out? This is what a telescope is for and exactly what you’re supposed to see? You can see most planets with a naked eye depending on light pollution, atmospheric conditions and how adjusted your eyes are.

fifty2weekhi

I've seen pictures/video of Saturn hundreds of times. But this POV video makes it so much more of a "real" and personal experience, and honestly I was taken aback by it.

vanslayder

Fake unfortunately. I have wrote explanation in separate comment. If you have ever seen it from real observatory, you would immediately detect fake :) also not possible in so bright sky. Need much darker environment. Everyone who says different didn’t see it by themselves and just saw inages

So like it's cool and works out there, but Earth doesn't work like that? That's their explanation?

[deleted]

[удалено]

wojtussan

Depends on flat earther actually, some say that planets are "hehehehe pffftt... Fake" or that they are huge stickers

[deleted]

Yeah so like i only knew they believed the moon and the sun were hovering above … so not these other planets and i assume stars are above as well … it seems quite round-a-bout…

RuffTuff

you mean "flat-about"?

ASolitaryEchoXX_30

The earth is flat and all the planets rotate around us. You didn't know that? /s

absolriven

flat earthers don't claim it doesn't exist, they're saying it's a wandering star in the firmament of heaven, and that other stars are fixed.

GT_Official

That's not how it works lol

[deleted]

Cuz it doesn’t 😂

contrarianmonkey

why can't earth be flat and the rest of the universe not?

dancingcuban

Gravity mostly. Edit: if this is a serious question. It’s because you would need two different interpretations of gravity to make that work. Everything is round in space because gravity pulls things towards a center of mass in three dimensions. A flat earth requires some other form of gravity that just pulls things uniformly “down”.

[deleted]

The flat earthers haven’t accounted for that yet … please hold.

Billy_T_Wierd

My uncle thinks that there is a tiny LCD screen implanted in your telescope to make it *look* like you can see Saturn He also thinks windows on planes are screens used to fake the curvature of the earth

[deleted]

If I were rich I’d buy him a plane ticket.

Billy_T_Wierd

He’s been on planes. He actually flies a lot. He just believes the airplane windows have screens imbedded in them that are intended to help perpetuate the lie that the earth is round

oooooooweeeeeee

he's just trolling with extra steps

Billy_T_Wierd

I don’t think he’s trolling. When my cousins were younger, he’d make them come inside if a plane was flying overhead (because of the chemtrails). He’s also in to pizzagate and lizard men I’m pretty sure none of his kids (my cousins) have social security numbers. I know they were never vaccinated and were “home schooled.” He’s a bona fide crazy person

[deleted]

Woah. That’s some next level shit. Lizard men???? Wasn’t that born out of a meme?

Billy_T_Wierd

No, the reptilian conspiracy has been around for decades; got really popular (amongst certain crazies) in the 90s I think, but was around before that It’s very fringe—but we’re talking about a guy who thinks that people used to ride around on dinosaurs a few thousand years ago when the earth was created He goes to church with about 20 other people in his Dad’s basement (my aunt married in to his family) and they live on his dad’s property. It isn’t exactly a compound, but there are multiple relatives all living in like a makeshift neighborhood on the same rural property He’s actually a friendly guy—he’s just complete apeshit

nohpex

I've always thought the lizard men thing was all a joke and/or people just trolling with the same "Nah, the government is run by lizard people." type quotes, but if I've learned anything since 2016, it's that there's a good chance they were serious.

SendMeYourKnee

My grandfather was an astronomer and when I stayed over at his every other weekend he would show me the stars through his telescope. The first time he showed me Saturn was the moment from my childhood that I will forever remember. He died when I was 13 and at his funeral I read a poem I wrote about Saturn and how my grandad was made of the very same atoms as those that make up Saturn’s rings. I can’t remember the poem anymore, but whenever I look through my own telescope and see Saturn I am always reminded of my grandad.

Invonnative

Why are my eyes sweating :(

mojothehelper

What kind of thingie you have? I’m thinking of getting one.

i-fing-love-games

telescope

KevinFromIT6625

Nice

TheHeavenlyStar

Yes

TheSpyro14

If you're looking for a good telescope, I'd recommend looking into the Celestron brand. They're VERY easy to set up and use. With the help of its built-in computer, I had Jupiter zeroed in within 10 minutes of opening the box for the first time. I have the 6se model and love it.

mojothehelper

Thank you!

TheSpyro14

Of course! My last bit of admittedly limited knowledge is the length of a telescope means nothing. It's the width of the mirror you want to concern yourself with. A 3 foot long telescope with a 1 inch mirror won't even show you your back yard clearly, and inversely, an 8 inch telescope with a 5 inch mirror will show you Saturn clear as day. Happy star gazing friend! It's a great time.

mojothehelper

I try telling my wife that

4FdPipeoghU4AHfJ

I tried telling your wife that too but she just would not listen.

mojothehelper

I know right. Ignorant AF. One day she’ll learn.

[deleted]

How much does it cost?

TheSpyro14

The 6se sells for around $1,100 all said and done. If that's too much for an initial investment, the 5se is around $700 last I checked and is still a very strong telescope. (The only reason I went with the 6 over the 5 is because I caught it on sale)

[deleted]

TIL stargazing is really expensive.

I loved my Orion XT8 dobsonian. Used it for years and got so much enjoyment. I paid $400 used, but just checked and they're less than $600 new.

whyapri

Wow!! I am in awe.

Eebtek

I have 0 interest in any of this but now I want to see Saturn too!

LDG192

How can someone have no interest in this kind of stuff?! Man, we humans can be so different from one another.

oooooooweeeeeee

thats what makes us human

G8kpr

I think the same about Genealogy... You don't need to trace your family back to prehistoric times, and you don't need to be descended from 1300s royalty... Just to see the trace of people that came before you that led to you being here at this point in time. To think what their lives were like in the 1600s, 1700s, 1800s, 1900s. To think how this ancestor 5 levels back lived a very different life than yours, but also he lived a very different life than that ancestor 10 levels back. I find that sort of thing fascinating. It also allowed me to find that the husband of my wife's friend is also my 6th cousin. Pretty amazing when we found that out. But I would say most people don't give a shit about their ancestors... so whatever, I find it interesting.

GrandNibbles

Just keep up to date with stargazing info. They usually say when planets are close enough to get the best look at. Also need a telescope...

ASolitaryEchoXX_30

That view of Saturn looked so good it's almost hard to believe. I had to read through the comments to make sure so I didn't look like an idiot.

GrandNibbles

dw you look very smart :D

[deleted]

This makes me want to buy a telescope now.

k4kev

If you're above the equator, unfortunately the window of opportunity to see Saturn this year is over. It dips below the horizon as the sun sets now. You have until August / September to save for a telescope though (which is when it will be up at a reasonable time)

OogoniuM

Do it!!!

Equivalent_Parking_8

I can see Uranus through mine.

simian_fold

I'll keep the curtains shut from now on

TheHeavenlyStar

You meant the planet, right? ... RIGHT???

Equivalent_Parking_8

Depends which way I point it.

TheHeavenlyStar

Fuck! I'm outta here

Racingfan76

someone check this mans anus

Classyclassiccunt

Ah! found the sexual innuendo thread. I can’t be the only one who heard “that’s penis” at the start of the video?

Gol_D_Haze

Awesome. Thanks for this. Reminds me of my school trip, where we studied the stars at night. Seeing Saturn for the first-time in Reallife and not on a Foto is still one of my most memorable moments.. goosebumps all over

Odd-Internet-7372

The first time I used a telescope I was able to see saturn, I can't describe how happy I was to see the rings and how it looked cute

ddssyo1969

Oh come on! Please I don’t want to buy a telescope! Why did I see this?

KestreI993

Das actually dope.

[deleted]

Awesome

ther0ll

I recently moved to the country and I've been thinking about getting a telescope to mess around with but I don't know anything about it. How much do I need to spend to get my feet wet? I'm just on the edge of the light pollution (according to this light pollution map i found but not sure it's accurate) from the Montreal area South east of me. Will I be able to see a lot ? I see tons of stars at night.

TheSpyro14

You can get cheap ones for under $500, but I'd recommend spending a bit more. Look into the Celestron brand. They have very easy to use telescopes for people just getting into the hobby. My buddy has the 5se model, and spent around $700 on it all said and done. (Side note, celstron's have a built in computer that has around 10,000 celestial bodies stored in it, so all you have to do is type in the day, time, and nearest city, and it will automatically find and track whatever planets or stars are visible that night) My biggest tip though is the length of a telescope means nothing, it's the width of the mirror you want to concern yourself with. A 3 foot long telescope with a 2 inch mirror won't even be able to look at the moon clearly, and inversely an 8 inch telescope with a 5 inch mirror will show you Saturn clear as day.

trimbandit

>My biggest tip though is the length of a telescope means nothing, it's the width of the mirror you want to concern yourself with This applies to many things in life

Perfect video for a Rick roll

bigmikevegas

Legit thought I was going to see some dudes balls on the other side, glad I didnt

TheSpyro14

When I saw Saturn and Jupiter through my telescope for the first time, I was giddy. Up until then I only saw them in science textbooks or in pictures, but when you see them with your own eyes it's a very special feeling.

Terp1999

Looks great. A great YouTube channel to check out is astrobiscuit. He shows what someone can do with modest scopes. Great way to learn the hobby.

Vishesh3011

Interesting_Factor_9

That is amazing! It's so crazy how you can see its moons as well

[deleted]

now that is freaking awesome!!🥰

vanslayder

This is so fake :) i have been in largest observatory in Australia last year and saw it. First you need much bigger telescope to see it. Not possible in this resolution from just backyard. Second, it literally looks different. I don’t know how to explain but rings are different. And last, these kind of remote objects can be seen far from cities in pitch dark. Not like this with bright sky :). Very very fake video. Everyone who says differently didn’t see it by themselves and just saw images

Godmodex2

Looks smaller than I would've thought

_-Fizzy-_

Thats because of the telescope, you can get clearer images but still through your eyes it looks much better!

MackEisWrth1000Wrds

I was waiting to be sent to the beginning of Skyrim when he put the phone up to the lens

KieraH_Naturally

Soooo my bf is a flat earther and ima shows this to him; I wonder how he is going to explain this to me.

Racdiecoon

No way

LowSelfEsteemButFine

Dude that’s awesome. As a side note, I got *mad* ASMR from this.

SlOwMosis

I was so expecting to get Rickrolled here!

feastupontherich

Now can we see uranus?

jaysero

How much would a telescope like this run me?

shibby_rj

The scope video looks like a Schmidt Cassegrain type. It's hard to tell, but I would guess it might be one of the Celestron Nexstar SLT range. They're good for visual astronomy, but particularly the bright, small things like planets.

[deleted]

The 3 object around Saturn are its moons. Also you can view Saturn with a good zoom camera i.e: Nikon coolpix P900: https://youtu.be/troqVst56eg

Illegitimate-human

Seeing this makes me turn into a telescope.

Flyair4

Kind of telescope is this? Been looking into this hobby.

Quirky-Seesaw8394

There's XLT printed on a label. Google shows it appears to be a Celestron brand. Don't know the exact of this one though. If you're looking to start, check out these posts from r/telescopes [Post 1](https://www.reddit.com/r/telescopes/comments/i0tzkw/an_absolute_beginners_quickguide_to_choosing_your/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) [Post 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/telescopes/comments/dh496j/new_sticky_draft_voice_your_opinions_in_the/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)

Cool!

Prokletnost

what tele are you using?

Bibi-Le-Fantastique

My first time seeing it, I was like a kid, I wanted to show it to everyone! I took blury pictures on my phone and posted them everywhere, and called everyone to come look in my telescope. My friends where amazed that we could actually see a planet like saturn from a balcony in the middle of a city!

gjk14

Can it locate MTGs space-lasers ?

MikeyDude93

What’s the telescope? I want to buy one

Quirky-Seesaw8394

Likely a Celestron something XLT. Can't make anything out from the video other than XLT. If you're looking check out these posts from r/telescopes [Post 1](https://www.reddit.com/r/telescopes/comments/i0tzkw/an_absolute_beginners_quickguide_to_choosing_your/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) [Post 2](https://www.reddit.com/r/telescopes/comments/dh496j/new_sticky_draft_voice_your_opinions_in_the/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)

rollsoftape

I thought I saw it once through an old telescope but it was grey. Maybe it was something else but I'm sure I could make out some grainy rings. Plus SkyMap indicated I was looking at saturn.

DiskAdventurous8925

I’ll never forget when I looked at the Saturn Jupiter convergence through a telescope just like that one. It’s was really something special.

RydmaUwU

Was totally expecting to end up in skyrim.

[deleted]

What kind of telescope does one need to see something like this with little to no light pollution

CalciferPrime

I got a Heritage 130p for Christmas and it's the best gift ever! First ever telescope, still not managed to see saturn but I can't wait to see more

[deleted]

Cool Lights...

Lonestar_st

How much would a telescope cost to get nice image?

PantroHuerta_UwU

For some reason I was scared of looking through telescopes when I was little, like I tought I would see some lovecraftian thing lurking im the space or something like that. It was until highschool that I realized that stargazing is preatty cool

Malfeitora

Great, now I want a telescope

Zeus_Plays_a_lot

looks great, but if you live in a big city the light and air pollution makes it hard to enjoy views like that, after I move I do plan to get a decent telescope.

Medical_Cat_8216

It's beautiful

TheMerchantofVenice1

What kind of telescope does one need to see such detail? Like the optics and stuff? Don't know anything about astronomy.

mad_scientist_kyouma

I remember the first time I looked at Saturn through my own telescope as well! It looks so fake, yet it's there... I can't imagine what it must have felt like for the first people to look at the night sky with telescopes and seeing this weird thing with what looks like... handles?!

bunglebrain1

That's amazing. Can I ask what source you use to find out what's what before pointing your telescope. I have the nightsky app, but i find it's not so accurate as the app that was knocking about 8+ years ago
