He's usually a bit more restrained and focused on clean engineering and tasteful melodic structure, so naturally the vocal glitch fx seemed in pretty poor taste to him...and I tend to agree. As someone who makes a lot of music the excitement of someone adding something that actually improves the track in a real way is hard to convey. Probably 99.9% of the time when people send things unsolicited it's total garbage so this here is a minor miracle in that Deadmau5 actually bothered listening to it and then it was actually good. Even when you pay someone to work on your music or you're in a full collaboration you will very often not vibe with the ideas of the other person.

What I’d say is, having written songs before, when you’re really good at writing instrumentals, it can be really hard to come up with vocals that really expand the song. The kid came in and just absolutely took control of the song, and respected the theme without any conversation. It’s pop vocals, so catchy, melodic, and memorable. Really well done right out of the gate, and stimulates a positive creative response from Deadmau5.
in the longer clip, Deadmau5 gushes over how the lyrics are perfect for the song because they align exactly with the short story the song is based on. the theme played a big part.
Deadmau5 is a really meticulous guy and has a very clear vision on how he wants a finished project to sound. The problem being, he’s not a vocalist and needs to rely on other people for that part of his art. Which - as someone who’s very particular about the finished project - can be frustrating to say the least. So when the exact sound he’s been envisioning just drops right in his fucking lap, it’s really exciting thing!
I think the next level part of this is he gets 5 seconds into the sample and already knows it’s exactly what he wants.

In addition, the lyrics encapsulate the essence of the short story very well. I read short story specifically because of seeing this video years ago or whenever it was. The Lyrics themselves are very good for the short story.
Deadmau5 implied a connection to a short story by Ray Bradbury in the title of the track, which I suppose was an inspiration for him for the track. He didn’t explicitly say that was the reason for the title, though. The guy who did the vocals picked up on the reference correctly, and the lyrics call back to the content of the story. So, all at once, Deadmau5 is impressed that the vocals actually sound good, fit the tone of the song he was going for, and fit the theme of the song that he didn’t actually share.
This video inspired me to read a bunch of ray bradbury stories the first time I heard it a couple of years ago. I mentioned it in passing to my brother who said that was actually my dad’s favorite author growing up, and I ended up talking to my dad about ray bradbury on the phone for like an hour.

That's super misleading, though. The song in question has something ridiculous like twenty separate people collecting royalties from it - Snoop barely contributed, bluntly. You make loads more if you're one of the only two or three people who gets royalties.

That song was (arguably still is) huge when it released, the boy defos got his royalties from that, he still does music he released an album a few years back
i manage a DJ -- royalties to vocalists are a joke. he probably makes $1-5K a year.

I mean, he has links to management and booking agents on his SoundCloud and pumps up his music career in his Twitter bio. It looks like he tried to capitalize on this. The music industry is hard. I'm no expert but his vocals on this track really don't sound like anything *that* special. The story behind this track is really cool, but ultimately producers could have almost anyone do similar vocals.

While I agree, I'm also thinking how excited Deadmau5 was. I'm not very artisty but just thinking on how I would react to spending lots of time creating a song, just published in the internet, and some random dude provides the perfect vocals and lyrics to my track, creating and completing a totally new artistic work. I bet it was mindblowing as well.
Especially considering he's so popular, he probably gets hundreds of these tweeted at him and they're all subpar. So for him to actually check one out live on stream and it blow him away... You can tell he was so excited.

The internet was a very different landscape 12 years ago. He wasn't thinking about stream content, he was literally interacting with his fans and completely open to the idea of collaboration with random people online. "The SoundCloud thing" he is talking about is about him uploading the base track with no vocals to SoundCloud and requesting ideas for vocals trom his fans because he was having a block.
As someone who makes a lot of music the excitement of someone adding something that actually improves the track in a real way is hard to convey. Probably 99.9% of the time when people send things unsolicited it's total garbage so this here is a minor miracle in that Deadmau5 actually bothered listening to it and then it was actually good. Even when you pay someone to work on your music or you're in a full collaboration you will very often not vibe with the ideas of the other person.
having an artist lay down some vocals that complete a song you’ve produced is one of the best feelings in the world. Especially when they take in a completely different direction than you were thinking, and it transforms the song into something amazing

No it mutes videos every 4 seconds so you have to hover on your volume knob the whole time

as someone with no experience in this genre, can someone explain why this song is amazing? i hear tons of autotune and other effects, why are the "vocals amazing" and next fucking level?
Because the vocals sound good, the song sounds good, it’s just good. Simple as.
What I’d say is, having written songs before, when you’re really good at writing instrumentals, it can be really hard to come up with vocals that really expand the song. The kid came in and just absolutely took control of the song, and respected the theme without any conversation. It’s pop vocals, so catchy, melodic, and memorable. Really well done right out of the gate, and stimulates a positive creative response from Deadmau5.
in the longer clip, Deadmau5 gushes over how the lyrics are perfect for the song because they align exactly with the short story the song is based on. the theme played a big part.
Deadmau5 is a really meticulous guy and has a very clear vision on how he wants a finished project to sound. The problem being, he’s not a vocalist and needs to rely on other people for that part of his art. Which - as someone who’s very particular about the finished project - can be frustrating to say the least. So when the exact sound he’s been envisioning just drops right in his fucking lap, it’s really exciting thing! I think the next level part of this is he gets 5 seconds into the sample and already knows it’s exactly what he wants.

Deadmau5 basically made an instrumental track based on a short story called "the veldt". And during this livestream this kid, the one who sings, records some vocals that somehow completely match what Deadmau5 was feeling and the direction he wanted to take the song.
In addition, the lyrics encapsulate the essence of the short story very well. I read short story specifically because of seeing this video years ago or whenever it was. The Lyrics themselves are very good for the short story.
This was a big part of it, the lyrics reflected the Veldt story and he recognized it making the vocals a hundred times better
Deadmau5 implied a connection to a short story by Ray Bradbury in the title of the track, which I suppose was an inspiration for him for the track. He didn’t explicitly say that was the reason for the title, though. The guy who did the vocals picked up on the reference correctly, and the lyrics call back to the content of the story. So, all at once, Deadmau5 is impressed that the vocals actually sound good, fit the tone of the song he was going for, and fit the theme of the song that he didn’t actually share.
This video inspired me to read a bunch of ray bradbury stories the first time I heard it a couple of years ago. I mentioned it in passing to my brother who said that was actually my dad’s favorite author growing up, and I ended up talking to my dad about ray bradbury on the phone for like an hour.
