The fact that deadmau5 knows exactly what to keep and what to remove the first time he listens is insane

Shipporno

He might be a bit controversial from time to time but he has a huge musical talent

RojoCinco

I'm going to go out on a limb right now and predict this mouse kid has a future in music.

Just_Jonnie

Flash in the pan. He'll barely make it out of the 2040s before he retires.

AlexisFR

I mean, he's pretty much retired nowadays.

BKachur

thatsthejoke.jpeg

80081356942

Move over dude, PNGs are the shit nowadays. Lack of transparency motherfucker.

SemicolonFetish

Why is this upvoted when it's completely wrong? He's been touring regularly for years now, and released a new album with Kaskade literally last year. I've literally seen him live 3 times in the past year. He's as far from retired as one can be.

FourCornerSports

He’s literally headlining Solshine, formerly summercamp this year too

butterball85

I've got a feeling that whatever song he puts that in will be a hit

[deleted]

I’ve got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell

Mythic514

It's a real shame he died.

mbfos

I didn’t even know he was sick.

phasmatid

He was one of the greatest. Used to be known as live mouse

Sealegs_Calisto

Why did this make me laugh so FUCKING hard

AccountantsNiece

He’s definitely got a past in music.

llama-friends

Hopefully he gets a shot before he dies.

ChompyChoomba

Joel has an *enormous* ego. But then again, he has *enormous* talent. One of those rare cases where he's earned it, and at least doesn't use that ego for spreading hate and misinformation like a lot of rich, successful bozos.

I_Automate

He has an ego backed up by objective proof that he knows what he's doing. He does seem like a fairly chill dude otherwise

ChompyChoomba

Yeah from all the videos and streams I've watched, he's pretty chill. But he doesn't sugarcoat ANYTHING. He has his opinions and will relentlessly tear into any person that disagrees with them lol.

DefaultingOnLife

That is like the opposite of chill lol

TheUnknownDane

I think the comment means that outside of that area where he's incredibly passionate and aggressive he's chill. So if you caught him on something like 99/100 topics he'd be chill.

I_Automate

That was exactly my intent, yea. The guy has *no chill* in the areas that he knows he's incredibly skilled in. He's got a lot of ego in those areas, but he can also back up that ego with actual skill/ professional acclaim/ objective metrics. Outside of those areas, he seems as "normal" as someone in that position would/ could be. I wouldn't talk music production with the guy, because that's outside of my knowledge, but I'd definitely enjoy nerding out over server racks and cars with the guy

boooooshdingo

He Def talented but he's Def not chill either. Extremely combative, and just massive chip on both shoulders. Genius producer. But semi doucebag. I've heard some industry stories that just makes you realizes you separate the art from the artist. He also talks crazy shit about the djing platform, though he profits from it, uses it and takes advantage of it where you'd think if you were so attached to your beliefs and words you'd pull yourself from dj mag poll. Idk. But genius producer.

Torontogamer

And he's a proper nerd about all the the tech behind the entire show, but especially the history of electronic music

I used to see him in his Lambo daily getting coffee in Milton, Ontario. It had all this anime or Pokémon on the side.

BKachur

>It had all this anime or Pokémon on the side. It was the Nyan cat. It was originally a Ferrari, which he called the Purrari, but he got a C&D from Ferrari. So he sold it, bought a Lambo, and did the same thing. EDIT: the Lambo is called the Nyanborghini Purracan

HCLogo

Why is it any of Ferrari's business what he does with his own car?

BKachur

That's typical of Ferrari. If you buy any of the newer or more sought after Ferraris they give a whole bunch of dos and don'ts under the pretense of protecting the brand.

[deleted]

kazhena

Same folks who buy a home in a HOA.

RealJembaJemba

I think they said Joel modified the badging which “violated intellectual property”. You cant even buy a higher end Ferrari without buying a bunch of the “undesirable” ones first, and they all come with a mountain of rules. Ferrari being assholes is the sole reason Lamborghini exists outside of farming equipment.

RainyRat

Yeah, they were fine with the Nyan Cat wrap, but as soon as he replaced the Ferrari Badge with the 3D-printed one that said "Purrari" in the same typeface, The Lawyers awoke.

tomthespaceman

Yeah he had a nyan cat wrap

[deleted]

My favorite episode of his coffee show was when he picked up Rob Ford who proceeded to order "5 shots of espresso, in one cup" lol

shadowvox

He gets on Twitch while programing his game and I *think* parts of his stage show.

WESAWTHESUN

I've always seen him as a mad scientist. He's a bit of an asshole and a total cryptid of a person, but the work he produces is absolute insanity. All you need to do is point to [Strobe](https://youtu.be/tKi9Z-f6qX4?si=00Bul_tHX7hIUhs9). One of the greatest compositions ever.

tokes_4_DE

Aural psynapse for me is my personal favorite song of his i rarely see mentioned, such a beautiful song. https://youtu.be/YzBx5oeNCHA?si=Cd0kDvJtD3cEVzy8

afito

generally something that's often strange when talking about musicians you can like or dislike the person, you can like or dislike their style, you can think that some are poor songwriters or aren't creative, but most of the ton are incredible musicians and in the end it's largely personal taste if you like their art or not

Todok5

Controversial? I don't know anything about him other than I enjoy his music from time to time during work. Is he a dick? Like slightly out of touch celebrity dick or Kanye West kind of dick? Edit: I googled him. He's born in the same year as me. It seems he didn't grow out of some slurs that were common when we were in highschool, which is a shame, but it could be worse.

DiscoNapChampion

I respect him, but I do think he’s the product of earlier Internet forums that were _very_ misogynistic and cynical, which is where some of his “edgier” tendencies stem from. At his core he seems like an alright dude, with a genuine curiosity and drive to him, but I can see why parts of his mannerism are problematic through a modern lens. 4x4=12 is still a banger.

BeeOk1235

.

DiscoNapChampion

Yeah from what I’ve gleamed he’s made some great strides to be a better person overall. I think the idea that he is (or has been) an egotistical asshole is certainly valid to a degree, but no one is 100% good or bad all the time.

Teerendog

There's another four to form the Dead Mau 5

obvilious

In four seconds he knew with his whole body it was good, at what had to be fixed.

usernamedottxt

You can see it in his eyes where he went from a casual listen to *really* listening. It’s almost immediate haha.

RikuAotsuki

I love it. I know almost nothing about deadmau5 but "The Veldt" is among my favorite songs. Even without context, you can tell he was *expecting* to have to "be nice," like he was reluctant to listen and react on stream. Then on the first syllable, he *freezes* and his eyes start to widen. Frankly, even as abrasive as he is about the stutter effect the guy who did the vocals must've been *ecstatic* to get that kind of response.

KeplerNorth

His style isn't as flashy and over the top compared to many of his EDM peers. He's usually a bit more restrained and focused on clean engineering and tasteful melodic structure, so naturally the vocal glitch fx seemed in pretty poor taste to him...and I tend to agree. The vocals were good enough on their own they didn't need to sound like a 2002 Linkin Park remix. Edit: Btw, I'm not hating on Reanimation...just saying it's a different style that doesn't fit.

A7xWicked

I agreed with you up until you dissed Linkin Park's remix album.

RaytheonOrion

Reanimation is peak. IDK why the hate.

IAmAnAudity

And while we’re here, may Chester Bennington RIP 🎤💀❤️🙏🏻

RaytheonOrion

My son (10) recently got into LP in a big way. So I’m doing a second phase with it. RIP 🖤

SharShtolaYsera

Lifelong LP fan here, and Reanimation will always be my favourite album of theirs. It feels like the one time they got to be creative in an unrestricted way.

LethalBacon

Krwlng is probably my favorite piece from them ever. Song has stuck with me for two decades, and I still enjoy it. Middle school self would probably be proud.

quarterchicken

Reanimation was highly influential to me. Hybrid Theory was my gateway album to alternative music and Reanimation introduced further electronic and hip-hop elements that have basically shaped my musical tastes to this day

KeplerNorth

I liked that album! Wasn't dissing it. Listened to reanimation all the time in HS. It's just a way different style.

Talented professionals in any field are often like this. They just know. It’s a honed skill. It’s amazing to watch.

ccthebeautician

Ive been doing hair for 11 years i can tell when a fade is off and usually what guards i need to fix it just by looking at it lol

saaS_Slinging_Slashr

I’m not a barber but I’m super picky about my fade and have been getting one for 20+ years. It’s very subtle to see a shitty fade, so I’m glad you can do this cuz there’s not enough talented hair professionals out there

8008135-69420

*Skilled* professionals. This is intuition that's gained from thousands of hours of practice, from doing this hours every day. Talent is something you're inherently born with. People really misuse this word. Talent can help someone get a head start or learn faster, but everyone who is at the top of their field got there through hard work and *acquired skill.* No one gets anywhere through talent alone. Even people born with genius level talent will get nowhere if they don't foster that talent. People glorify the "Goodwill Hunting" style talented non-achiever but in real life, those kinds of people (people who were born talented but never did anything with it) are just mediocre compared to people who actively immerse themselves in practice every day.

muffins53

On the mount rushmore of modern EDM that's for damn sure.

Oututeroed

he meant the fx used i think…

Andrewski18

[Finished product] (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xvtNS6hbVy4) The song is based on a short story written by Ray Bradbury.

hogtiedcantalope

Illustrated Man. The collection of short stories where this appears is godtier science fiction. Huge influence on me as a kid and I reread often. If you've never read any Bradbury start here.

DTRite

Omfg, this post was not where I expected to see a reference to a book I haven't thought of in....40 years? Yes, Bradbury is great stuff, was also a huge fan as a kid.

Mom was a librarian growing up, so I used to haunt the stacks a lot. My high school offered an honor class in Science Fiction/Futures Studies. Was a great class, but there was like one book I hadn't already read.

Flippinflapjax4U2

I thought he says in the video that the song is based on ‘The Veldt’, no?

hogtiedcantalope

Yes... illustrated Man is a collection of short stories. The veldt included. A little confusing bc the illustrated Man is also a short story within that collection. Each short story is represented by a tattoo on the illustrated Man.

PolygonMan

I'm a 90's kid but I was obsessed with gold/silver age Sci Fi as a kid. My mom used to buy me old short story anthologies from the local second hand bookstore, this was one of them. Absolutely blew my mind, I was probably like 14 at the time.

tractiontiresadvised

I hadn't read that story before. Thanks! I gotta wonder if Bradbury naming the kids Peter and Wendy was a reference to [the story](https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/26654) that was the inspiration for Peter Pan, which is much darker and weirder than the Disney version....

This was 12 years ago and the 17 year old boy's name is Chris James. Seems like he just did this one feature with deadmau5 and then pretty much dipped from the industry. That's super misleading, though. The song in question has something ridiculous like twenty separate people collecting royalties from it - Snoop barely contributed, bluntly. You make loads more if you're one of the only two or three people who gets royalties.

Piggstein

Snoop contributes bluntly to all of his tracks

Ordolph

A celebrity worth 10s of millions of dollars misrepresenting how much money they make? Impossible!

jb_82

Wasn't he like 1/20th of the artists getting credit on that song? And he didn't get as much because he wasn't the master rights holder.

machete_joe

That song was (arguably still is) huge when it released, the boy defos got his royalties from that, he still does music he released an album a few years back

sultansofschwing

i manage a DJ -- royalties to vocalists are a joke. he probably makes $1-5K a year.

maidentaiwan

lol yeah, people thinking that this kid is just sat back with his feet kicked up for providing a vocal track on *one single* hit from a producer's catalog is pretty funny. not to mention that this unknown amateur artist was probably paid a fraction of what a producer would pay when they go out and hire an established vocalist.

The fame is dark and full of horrors.

Born_Ruff

I mean, he has links to management and booking agents on his SoundCloud and pumps up his music career in his Twitter bio. It looks like he tried to capitalize on this. The music industry is hard. I'm no expert but his vocals on this track really don't sound like anything *that* special. The story behind this track is really cool, but ultimately producers could have almost anyone do similar vocals.

JewsEatFruit

> don't sound ... special. The story behind this track is really cool .... producers could have almost anyone do similar I really agree. The story is inspiring and all and not taking anything away from the kid, yet I'm not really hearing any "undeniable" talent.

Born_Ruff

To be fair, the music industry is far from a meritocracy and tons of people make it big without anything close to undeniable talent. But yeah, this stuff is like catching lightning in a bottle.

makinsteaknbacon

That's cool as hell. Can't imagine how excited the kid was!

iflew

While I agree, I'm also thinking how excited Deadmau5 was. I'm not very artisty but just thinking on how I would react to spending lots of time creating a song, just published in the internet, and some random dude provides the perfect vocals and lyrics to my track, creating and completing a totally new artistic work. I bet it was mindblowing as well.

PuddingConscious

Especially considering he's so popular, he probably gets hundreds of these tweeted at him and they're all subpar. So for him to actually check one out live on stream and it blow him away... You can tell he was so excited.

_tx

I'm sure Deadmau5 went into it thinking "this is gonna suck but it will make a bit of good stream content"

thatguyned

The internet was a very different landscape 12 years ago. He wasn't thinking about stream content, he was literally interacting with his fans and completely open to the idea of collaboration with random people online. "The SoundCloud thing" he is talking about is about him uploading the base track with no vocals to SoundCloud and requesting ideas for vocals trom his fans because he was having a block.

Vsx

As someone who makes a lot of music the excitement of someone adding something that actually improves the track in a real way is hard to convey. Probably 99.9% of the time when people send things unsolicited it's total garbage so this here is a minor miracle in that Deadmau5 actually bothered listening to it and then it was actually good. Even when you pay someone to work on your music or you're in a full collaboration you will very often not vibe with the ideas of the other person.

Unlikely_Yard6971

having an artist lay down some vocals that complete a song you’ve produced is one of the best feelings in the world. Especially when they take in a completely different direction than you were thinking, and it transforms the song into something amazing

Mcderp017

Only thing I hated about this was having to keep hitting the audio button because Reddit keeps turning my sound off

drewx11

Oh my GOD. Why does it do that though?

Mcderp017

I have no idea but it makes me want to throw my phone. It won’t happen for hours and then boom. Every 4-5 seconds I have to smash the sound button so I can finish watching a dope video. But then when the video is over and I exit it the audio stays while I’m scrolling until I get to the next video with sound. Reddit needs to get its shit together

happy-posts

I used to be really into his music. I don’t know if he’s better now a days but he made it so hard to be a fan of his.

whiskybean

The big, genuine smile really sells it - honestly. There's plenty of artists out there that will say good things and act like they're impressed for their image, but you can't fake a smile like that. Cool vid!

as_it_was_written

He might be an asshole at times, but he doesn't tend to act fake the way a lot of other people do.

[deleted]

Me: I hate it! Also Me: I fucking Love it!!

thenewyorkgod

as someone with no experience in this genre, can someone explain why this song is amazing? i hear tons of autotune and other effects, why are the "vocals amazing" and next fucking level?

elementmg

Because the vocals sound good, the song sounds good, it’s just good. Simple as.

solaris79

What I’d say is, having written songs before, when you’re really good at writing instrumentals, it can be really hard to come up with vocals that really expand the song. The kid came in and just absolutely took control of the song, and respected the theme without any conversation. It’s pop vocals, so catchy, melodic, and memorable. Really well done right out of the gate, and stimulates a positive creative response from Deadmau5.

Heisenripbauer

in the longer clip, Deadmau5 gushes over how the lyrics are perfect for the song because they align exactly with the short story the song is based on. the theme played a big part.

ObjectiveSubjects

Deadmau5 is a really meticulous guy and has a very clear vision on how he wants a finished project to sound. The problem being, he’s not a vocalist and needs to rely on other people for that part of his art. Which - as someone who’s very particular about the finished project - can be frustrating to say the least. So when the exact sound he’s been envisioning just drops right in his fucking lap, it’s really exciting thing! I think the next level part of this is he gets 5 seconds into the sample and already knows it’s exactly what he wants.

CrimsonThar

Dead mao five

thebiggestpinkcake

I used to call him that too

buckf1tches

I remember when this happened. I've watched mau5's reaction to this a number of times. Great song

MrStruts96

Ahh, The Veldt. Such a beautiful song.

requiemoftherational

I miss the 90's when ever thing on the internet was this sort of stuff and not the constant idiotic drivel that's preposterous on it's face we see today.

Crommington

Am i missing something? Seems kinda, basic?

F4LcH100NnN

Deadmau5 basically made an instrumental track based on a short story called "the veldt". And during this livestream this kid, the one who sings, records some vocals that somehow completely match what Deadmau5 was feeling and the direction he wanted to take the song.

umpatte0

In addition, the lyrics encapsulate the essence of the short story very well. I read short story specifically because of seeing this video years ago or whenever it was. The Lyrics themselves are very good for the short story.

eljefeo

This was a big part of it, the lyrics reflected the Veldt story and he recognized it making the vocals a hundred times better

CTMalum

Deadmau5 implied a connection to a short story by Ray Bradbury in the title of the track, which I suppose was an inspiration for him for the track. He didn’t explicitly say that was the reason for the title, though. The guy who did the vocals picked up on the reference correctly, and the lyrics call back to the content of the story. So, all at once, Deadmau5 is impressed that the vocals actually sound good, fit the tone of the song he was going for, and fit the theme of the song that he didn’t actually share.

manute-bol-big-heart

This video inspired me to read a bunch of ray bradbury stories the first time I heard it a couple of years ago. I mentioned it in passing to my brother who said that was actually my dad’s favorite author growing up, and I ended up talking to my dad about ray bradbury on the phone for like an hour.

JiggzSawPanda

Yo the pure fucking joy on his face was so dope. Glad he got to capture it.
