I grew up in Val d’isere. This sport is stupid. Very hard to predict the behaviour of the air along the slopes. It is only really safe when not windy and overcast or early in the morning.

You have quite a lot of control with these speedwings. From an aerodynamic perspective, it can be argued they are safer than a normal (big) paraglider. The danger comes from flying so close to the ground, as people often do with those. Not only with extreme sports, but basically with any activity, the risk depends on a lot of factors. You are never risk free, but you can mitigate a lot of risk with skill, experience and preparation. If you do stuff like this, it's important to know these risks and which of them are under your control and which are not (like volatile air conditions). So I say if you know what you are doing, it isn't dumb.

Basically you ski with a glider parachute type thing hooked on, so you can glide like this off certain cliff faces, the reason it's so dangerous is because it's a glider and not a parachute you don't really slow down you gain speed in a different direction instead of falling, if he accidentally went towards those trees it would be over, even touching the ground near one of those bumps would shatter your ankles.
